Discipleship is a life-long process of becoming more like Jesus Christ. When we look to the Word, we see a platform for discipleship is presented which should be embraced. The question is whether or not we have a readiness to be transformed as Scripture outlines. Wish continues our series on "Why Church?" by looking at the importance of discipleship.

A few weeks ago, Faith Matters released a video we called “Why Church?” It features several of our favorite people, who gave really thoughtful answers to that question that is present for so many. This week, we're sharing Tom Christofferson's Restore talk, which addresses the next question: “How Church?” Tom describes in poignant and sometimes hilarious detail his experiences joining a new ward where so many people are so unlike him, and, in the end, found that that was kind of the point. For us, this was one of the very most memorable sessions at this year's Restore. We love Tom deeply and know he has so much to teach us. When he talks, we always stop to listen. For those of you who don't know, we've decided to release all of this year's Restore sessions on YouTube totally free of charge. Segment 1 – Why Church? Moderator: Why do people go to church?   Jordan Peterson: Why should they… M: Right J:Because that's a discussion…so lots of modern people say ‘well I don't go to church because I don't believe that. It's like…who cares what you believe, like who the hell are you anyways? Do you even care what you believe? How's that working for you, this belief set that you theoretically have? How sophisticated is that?  Are you Plato or what? ‘Well here's the church and here's me and I'm right' and it's like well no you're not, first, and second you don't even want to be because that's a great place to be, like a pinnacle of brilliant wisdom… M: (laughs) J:…completely solipsistic, and even if you are right that the bloody institution is chaotic and decadent in some fundamental sense, well it's like ‘good, there's something for you to do, well if the church is broken and you're the genius to see it, why don't you go fix it?' Well then you might say ‘Well then we'll just abandon it' and it's like ‘OK, well fine, you're gonna get rid of that, eh, you're gonna get rid of marriage, you're gonna get rid of funerals, you're gonna get rid of Christmas, you're gonna get rid of sense of sacred time…How far are you willing to go with this? And believe me, that question is right in front of you… -Jordan Peterson (Theme music plays, pencil scratching in the background)  in a whispered tone P: Transcripts  D: (laughter) OK F:Wow D:Mr. Jordan Peterson F:He.. D:Mr. Jordan Peterson F:That's one of the most Deerect, deerect? …direct um, and blunt  individuals I have ever heard. D:It's one thing, I so I've never met the guy, I've, that's, that's a bucket list thing, to meet Jordan Peterson… F:To meet Jordan Peterson? D:Yeah, and actually have him on a podcast F:Can I be on a fly , be a fly on your shoulder D:If, If I could have him on a podcast that would actually be more amazing too, but yeah, ok (laughter) F: (laughter) D:Uh, that's a lot F:So we're really gonna talk about this… D:I mean, yeah F:Church, religion D:Why… F:Hello listeners… D:Why go to church was the question… F:Right.  And actually it wasn't why do you go to church, He then changes it…the real question is why should you D:Yeah, Yeah, so, that was Jordan Peterson, he says why should you…um…here's the thing: Everybody needs a belief system. (1:42) F:Of some sort, yes D:Doesn't necessarily mean, um you need to be religious…He's trying very hard… F:Yes, he is D:Guys, we have a dog in the room while we are recording and he literally thinks that we should be playing with him all the time.  He feels very neglected, but, yeah, anyway, we digress…Back to, but I mean, so,  F:And, And that belief system it, it, it obviously varies D:Well, ok, so for me…I was raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, not in Utah, Now, we are recording this while we are in Utah, but I was raised in that church. So, I, I know a lot of people , I got friends and relatives, that are baptist ministers, Methodist ministers, um, you know, you name it, and I can say growing up in the church outside of Utah is different. F:I will agree with that because I, too, was raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but in Arizona. D:OK F:I mean my, my… D:Different dynamic, different paradigm though F:Exactly D:Because you do, even in Arizona you do have a little bit of the runoff, my opinion, you correct me if I am wrong on this, you have, you have the runoff of, um, you're close to Utah, so there is a bleed off of the bubble, if you will F:Correct, the Mesa, the Mesa Arizona area D:OK F:I guess D:Where me…people look at ya and they're like ‘You, You're part of that cult, OK F:I never got that, so I'm ok D: (laughter) Right, because growing up in the Bible Belt, that's what you get, you get this is God, this is Jesus, this is how it's all done, and without this you are gonna go to hell… --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theyoungbloods/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theyoungbloods/support

Does history really matter in our modern world? What about Christian history? Is there a good way to understand history that relates to us? Is there a bad way of doing history? What can history show us about living as Christ-followers in our modern world? The answer is, of course, plenty!Travis welcomes Dr. Scott Sunquist, President of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, to the show to help us navigate and harness the story of history so that we might be able to help the church chart a new path forward in our modern post-everything world. Christian history can help us understand who we are, where we have come from, and how we fit into what God is doing in the world. That being said, history is much more than a record of what happened in the past, it is an unfolding of a story, and that story must be told accurately, or it could lead to disastrous results in the present. Travis and Dr. Sunquist discuss his book, The Shape of Christian History, and how Christian history helps guide us when done correctly. It's a conversation that enlightens, equips, and encourages you to press forward in fulfilling the mission God has for you where you are. Scott is the author of The Unexpected Christian Century: The Reversal and Transformation of Global Christianity, 1900-2000, Understanding Christian Mission: Participation in Suffering and Glory, Why Church?: A Basic Introduction, and co-author of History of the World Christian Movement: Earliest Christianity to 1453, History of the World Christian Movement: Modern Christianity from 1454-1800. Why Christian: Finding Faith When You Can't Believe Anymore You see the beauty of God and you can't say no.  But you see the messiness of religion and you can't say yes.  The awe and wonder of life make it almost impossible not to believe.  But the ache and evil of the world make it utterly irrational to believe.  Maybe you were promised that Christianity would resolve life's paradoxes and answer your deepest questions, only to discover that it unearthed even deeper and more unanswerable ones, like: Who is Jesus and why did he really come?  What is salvation and what are we actually saved from?  Who are Christians and why do too many of them seem so un-Christian?  What is the Bible and how are we supposed to read it in the modern world?  What is the meaning and purpose of life and where is all of this headed? It turns out, Christianity is not a religion of finite answers.  Christianity is an ongoing conversation about the infinite possibilities of experiencing God in the beauty and the mess of life, the awe and the ache of the world. If you're inclined to say no to religion, you can still say yes to the conversation.  Join us for this provocative new series, “Why Christian”— a generous five-week conversation about how we might still find faith even when we can't believe anymore.
