Can sustainable buildings be both high-performing and beautiful? In the age of social media, image is king. Is our appetite for novel forms at odds with our goals for better performance?
In current debates, there's a lot of talk about climate-friendly, sustainable construction. This is something that has been practised in Asia for many years – on the one hand, out of the necessity to offer as many people as possible a liveable home in a dense city environment, but also because it has been politically desired and regulated by law. For 28 years, Singapore-based WOHA has focused on designing integrated architectural and urban planning solutions to address 21st century issues such as climate change, population growth and rapidly increasing urbanisation. Today in our podcast, we talk with Schirin Taraz-Breinholt from WOHA about what this involves in detail and where a simple rethink can have a big effect.
Woha this episode is jam packed! We got naughty people sending pictures to the cloud, crypto death spirals, murdering robots, and Dan buying a server...again!
How can we fix the problem of cities today? Is density at the expense of liveability? Are human-made and natural systems — key to our survival — at odds with each other? Can design offer a solution?
A critique of a trending design is the STRAMP, a combination of staircase and ramp, designed in a way that is hazardous and dangerous to use by many people. With the uninformed designer it may look like a good idea but using the first principles of what is a staircase and what is a ramp, this podcast provides some idea of the problem with the design, if you are not skilled and knowledgeable in accessibility/disability access. If you need a good example, WOHA did a good one separating the functions clearly, in this link: https://woha.net/project/enabling-village/© 2022 Talk Architecture, Author: Naziaty Mohd YaacobPhoto (artwork): "STRAMP" in the student center at IIT [ website: https://i.imgur.com/6nHRJ.jpg]

Richard Hassell is an Australian-born architect and artist who has lived in Singapore since 1989. He is the co-founding director, alongside Wong Mun Summ, of the Singapore-based architectural firm, WOHA. Known for their dedication to environmental and social issues, they tackle problems of the 21st century with innovative new design and urban solutions. Their work embraces diverse highly influential projects, from residential towers, resorts and hotels, public housing and institutional buildings, to masterplanning. It has been the Aga Kahn Award for Architecture in 2007 to establish their reputation and notoriety as authors of naturally ventilated skyscrapers for urban tropical context. Many other prestigious international achievements have followed, attesting the precious contribution of their projects, as milestone of sustainability. Richard will share his expertise, talking about topics today so much at heart, sustainability embodied in ‘high-density high-amenity', ‘macro-architecture and micro-urbanism', and, as a leader of outstanding skyscrapers, he will talk about his vision on how we can build, embracing more responsible, healthier choices, blending living green with vernacular traditions.
In this episode I speak with one of Brisbane’s most respected female architects, Elizabeth Watson Brown. For 21 years Elizabeth headed her own private practice, Elizabeth Watson Brown Architects. She then merged Architectus. Among her many accomplishments Elizabeth just recently collaborated with the world famous firm WOHA on Brisbane tower 443 Queen Street. In this interview we discuss her career, being a working mum, her thoughts on the industry and where to from here.. This is Episode 11, enjoy! If you know someone that has a great story or ideas to share, you can find me on linkedIn. Jessica Reynolds, urban planner.
The architecture of WOHA, founded by Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell in 1994, is notable for its constant evolution and innovation. A profound awareness of local context and tradition is intertwined with an ongoing exploration of contemporary architectural form-making and ideas, thus creating a unique fusion of practicality and invention. WOHA has won an unprecedented amount of architectural awards for a Southeast Asian practice, such as the 2011 RIBA Lubetkin Prize, 2010 International Highrise Award and the 2007 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The practice currently has projects under construction in Singapore, India, China, Australia and Indonesia. A travelling exhibition devoted exclusively to their work opened at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Germany, in December 2011, and three substantial monographs – WOHA: The Architecture of WOHA and WOHA: Selected Projects Vol. 1 and 2 – have already been published.

Just 1 week at a time. This will make Your Perfect Diet easy, do-able and most importantly fun... oh, and delish! MODULE 5: WEEK BY WEEK Find a day during your week where you can set aside 30 minutes to plan your week ahead. Be sure to schedule it in your diary or calendar so you remember! Then it's the FUN part. Choosing recipes for brekky, dinner and snacks if you need them. Here's our tips to make your meal planning experience easy and fun: Collect your fave recipes! It might be that you create a Pinterest board, have a recipe box, or mark cookbooks with post-its. This way you always have a bunch to choose from. Use a cute meal plan to set it all out (we sent you a CUTE downloadable one in the email today!). Plan for double dinners so it serves as leftovers for lunch the next day (you could even make triple and freeze leftovers for another day!). Mix up ingredients so you never get bored (if chicken, broccoli and brown rice sounds all too familiar PLEASE check out all our free recipes!). Go for seasonal fruits and veg as they're normally cheaper. Choose recipes that have similar herbs, that way you're not buying 10 different bunches. Depending when you start your week, set aside some time to prep for the week ahead. Prepping = you save time. Because you're only washing up once, getting bowls out once, chopping stuff once etc. etc. Don't worry... we have prep tips too, because how do you know what to prep and what to do fresh? Here goes: Write a thorough shopping list (we sent you a downloadable, fill-a-ble one!). Make a batch of snackable items at the start of the week. Things like muffins, nut/seed mixes and healthy breads are always a good idea. Cut up all your veggies and store in the fridge. The nutritional value goes down a LITTLE but the time saving factor is worth it. If smoothies are on your meal plan, prepare all dry smoothie ingredients in a zip-lock bag and place in the fridge. Then it's as simple as whack it in the blender, add ice, milk and blend! If you're REALLY short on time during the week, choose to make dinners that can be frozen and then thawed. Do you have any more questions on meal planning and prepping? Ask away! Seriously, planning your week and your meals will ensure you keep winning at life and Your Perfect Diet. YOUR ACTION STEP: Download the fill-a-ble meal plan and shopping list (we sent this to you via email!) and follow our tips to create your own perfect diet meal plan. Wow! Wow! Wow!
