    “How to Be Your Own Wealth Planner," is my new four-part mini-series on helping you to become your own wealth planner. As an independent financial advisor with 23 years of experience in financial services, I share my top insights on creating your personalized wealth plan.  I believe that everyone can create their wealth plans at a basic level and it can make a huge positive difference. With this first episode, I will help you to identify your desired financial future and then determine the goals you want to create to work towards this.  The first thing we need to consider and decide on when we are setting our money goals, is a timeframe, such as short-term, medium-term or long-term. By visually breaking down the goals into clear objectives, the bankometer can provide you with a sense of direction and motivation.     Today's episode is with our guest Susan Hope, a financial specialist with Scottish Widows, who discusses the various challenges women face in retirement and how they can better prepare for this stage of life. Susan, who joined Scottish Widows two and a half years ago, brings over 30 years of experience in the industry and is now managing a sales team, helping employers create workplace saving schemes. Susan shares the findings of Scottish Widow's 19th annual report, focusing on the structural inequalities that women face in retirement. The report used a new approach, examining the lifestyle women could expect in retirement rather than focusing on the savings index. The findings were stark, with 40% of women not having enough to meet the minimum standard of living in retirement. For single mothers, this figure was even higher at 75%. Shifting the conversation to potential solutions that could improve women's financial well-being, Susan emphasises employers' role in changing the narrative around pensions and helping employees see the value of their contributions. She suggests employers should provide tools and resources to help employees understand their pension provisions. This episode also touches on the concept of a "pot for life" and the proposed pensions dashboard, both aimed at simplifying pension management for individuals. Susan highlights the need for transparency and open conversations about money, both in the workplace and at home. The conversation starts with Katharine sharing her experience of menopause and her professional background in women's health. She highlights that she also had fertility treatment for her son due to an acute pain condition called endometriosis. She also shares her struggles with anxiety, insomnia, and a challenging work-life balance. The podcast then moves into a discussion of menopause and its impact on women's financial situations. Katharine asserts that menopause can be a threat to women's financial security if they are not adequately supported during this period. Katharine suggests that understanding and addressing these symptoms can help women continue to work and maintain their financial security and that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can benefit women who are unable to or do not wish to take HRT. Since I paused the podcast I wanted to share what had been happening, including some big decisions I've made about the business. During this time I learned more about my value and what was creating my future wealth, which allowed me to think about my long-term strategy as a business owner. Giving notice to my existing network and moving to a new network that has a different language, way of working, and support system that is more focused on delivering an outcome for the client. I am excited about this shift, and since making the decision, I now feel like I'm back on the right path.

    A recession is a significant decline in economic activity across a wide range of sectors and industries. Right now as I recorded this episode the UK is not currently in a recession. It's not been forecasted by the Bank of England, but there is a lot of talk about it is likely based on what is going on with consumers. A recession usually lasts for a prolonged period, typically six months or more.  They can have a significant impact on our lives, both financially and emotionally and during a recession, it is important to be proactive and take steps to protect your finances.  Here are six things you can do in a recession:  1- Build up your emergency fund to cover at least three months of essential outgoings.
