The Private Life of Public Transport is a new immersive art installation by Artist David Van Eyssen using virtual and mixed reality along with sound and light to open the door on the life, thoughts and dreams of a number of blind and partially sighted people to everyone. The Private Life of Public Transport is on as part of the London Frieze art fair, 11-15 October 2023 at Virtual Ghost, 36 Eastcastle Street, London, time slots from 2-8pm which need to be booked in advanced. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with David to find out more about where the idea for The Private Life of Public Transport came from, why David wanted to use public transport and the environment of a bus for the starting point of the installation, why he also wanted to invoke blind and partially sighted people within the installation, how the RNIB have helped David with not only finding blind and partially sighted people to be interviewed for the project but also adding tactile elements to this virtual immersive experience. David then explained to Toby how the interviews with a number of blind and partially sighted people were used as the basis for the immersive virtual journey that people will go on as they experience The Private Life of Public transport and how the installation or similar experiences could be used in other cities and countries around the world to in a way open the door on the life, thoughts and dreams of other blind and partially sighted people to their local community and the wider public. A pop-up theatre has launched in Auckland which allows guests to see themselves as the star of the show, with the help of articicual intelligence. Participants at Hypercinema have photos taken of themselves from multiple angles, and then view their customised, short AI film across three spaces - a cinema, a gallery and a projection space. One reviewer described it both as a thought-provoking experiment on the role of AI in art - another described it as a narcassist's dream. It's the co-creation of Dr Miles Gregory, founder of the Pop-Up Globe, who after years as an artistic director and producer at various festivals, touring companies and theatres, is now embracing a new medium.

Connecticut and Puerto Rico have strong ties. The guest for this episode is Pablo Delano, a visual artist, photographer, and educator recognized for his use of Connecticut and Puerto Rican history in his work, including his 2020 book of photography Hartford Seen published by Wesleyan University Press, a Connecticut Book Award 2021 “Spirit of Connecticut” finalist. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, he is the Charles A. Dana Professor of Fine Arts at Trinity College in Hartford. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Over the course of 20 years Delano amassed a substantial archive of artifacts related to a century of Puerto Rican history. Using this material, including three-dimensional objects, newspaper clippings, and photographs, he created The Museum of the Old Colony, a dynamic, site-specific art installation that examines the complex and fraught history of U.S. colonialism, paternalism, and exploitation in Puerto Rico. The title is a play on words, referencing both the island's political status and Old Colony, a popular local soft drink. The work is also deeply personal, a means for Delano to better understand and come to terms with the troubling history of Puerto Rico. Pablo was chosen by Connecticut Explored as a Connecticut History Game Changer Honoree in celebration of the magazine's 20th anniversary in 2022-23. Professor Delano has been featured on Grating the Nutmeg in episode 123 discussing his book of photographs Hartford Seen and in episode 152 Hartford and Puerto Rico: A Conversation between Delano and Puerto Rican historian Elena Rosario. He has an article in the Spring 2023 issue of Connecticut Explored - read here: www.ctexplored.org/game-changer-topsy-in-the-tropics/ While we might not be able to travel to see the exhibition in person, the University of Virginia Press has published a beautiful full-color catalog that includes a collection of very insightful essays edited by Laura Katzman as well as photos of the exhibition. Last spring, more than 100 Oregonians posed for portraits on empty pedestals in downtown Portland that used to house sculptures of former presidents. The portraits are the brainchild of indigenous artist Jeffrey Gibson, who was invited by Portland Art Museum to create a multimedia installation both inside and outside the museum. Gibson, a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent, created the portraits, glass panels, and a timeline of notable dates in Oregon's Indigenous history. We talk to Gibson, and to Kathleen Ash-Milby, curator of Native American Art at the Portland Art Museum, about the exhibit.

In this episode of B4 U Swipe, Kris and Lauren discuss an income-oriented “optimistic gentleman” and a queer pansexual with an intense gothy profile.Kris's profile highlights include: The Oxford comma, Lauren's hatred of car photos and those featuring visible earbuds, an empty hotel chair, quality ice cubes, the orgasm gap, and the best smile we've seen in ages. Overall, this profile showed a lot of promise. We wish the photos appeared in a different order and were better edited. Kris swiped right to no avail.Lauren's profile highlights include: Many different hair and nail/finger colors, hand tattoos, dyed dog ears, missing eyeballs, body gore, selfies with fruit, and your own music being your anthem. Overall, this profile felt more like an art installation and/or a recipe for codependency. While Lauren didn't swipe right, they did listen to their music.
