Coming up for air after being trapped in the fog of a cycle of domestic abuse – the story of (mostly) women who have finally found the strength to leave. After a news review with Sasha Kehoe, the topic of today's show is Domestic Violence. Eric Lamhène and Rae Lyn Lee set out to make a film a few years ago where the back-story of one of the characters was domestic abuse. When they started their research in 2017, visiting shelters of victims, they realised this was the story they wanted to tell instead. ‘Breathing Underwater' (Hors d'Haleine) is the result. Produced by Samsa Film, this Luxembourgish independent feature-length film was released in cinemas on 13th of November 2024 and will be re-shown on 7 March ahead of Women's International Day on 8 March. Eric is the director and Rae Lyn is the co-writer and Director of Photography. www.breathingunderwater-film.com My other guest, Christine Renzi, is a social worker who has worked with women and children at Foyer Sud for many years. Today she is part of a team that runs “Log-in”, part of Conseil National des Femmes du Luxembourg, CNFL. Eric and Rae Lyn talk about the strength of women in the shelters they visited, the camaraderie and strife they share as they figure out a new path ahead. Eric mentions the fact that most of these women are ex-pats as Luxembourgish people tend to reconnect with family or friends here in these situations. Christine tells us that even though some women (as it is mostly women) return, they usually, eventually, leave when the time is ready for them. Both Christine, and Eric & Rae Lyn, have brought their work into schools and every time, whatever the socio-economic demographic, they have children come to talk to them as they know what this is about, they have lived it. Or they walk out as it is too painful for them to relive it. Domestic abuse comes in many forms and it is not always physical. Psychological abuse can be more harmful in ways as it constantly chips away at the other's confidence, gaining control of that person, making them feel as though they live in a fog of doubt. The victim's circle diminishes, they may loose work and certainly loose confidence. Often there is a trigger to leave the home, and often this trigger is the children.

Of course men are also victims although the figures at the moment for men are much lower than for women. Nonetheless, in Luxembourg law, both genders are seen in equitable terms. What makes a (mostly) man abuse another? Eric says that his conversations with psychologists suggest it happens with these men are not in contact with their emotions. “The patriarchy hurts both sides”. If you want to check the violence scale, here is a good resource: https://oivf.seinesaintdenis.fr/app/uploads/2022/06/violentometre-2019-anglais.pdf If you need help and support in Luxembourg please contact: www.violence.lu You can find more information from Eurostat here: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/w/ddn-20241125-3  www.breathingunderwater-film.com

If creativity doesn't always yield the expected results, how do we measure “success”?  In today's episode, I explore the idea of focusing more on how the creative process feels than on how it looks. It doesn't matter if you're growing a business or falling in love or making a piece of art. The question I want you to ask yourself is: how does it make you feel?  This isn't how we're trained in religion or in many family dynamics and it certainly isn't how we're indoctrinated by broader culture. But is it possible that leaning into what feels good — over what looks good — gets us closer to our desired outcome?  Here's the book I mentioned in today's episode: Breathing Under Water by Richard Rohr. Here we are with Season 3, Episode 3, where we aptly discuss the meaning of the numbers 3, 33, and numbers in triplicate! Numbers are more than just random digits or odd ‘coincidences,' God speaks to us through numbers in dreams, visions, or even patterns we see in our waking life. Believe it or not, this isn't a new way of God speaking to His people. In fact, it's an ancient method of communication from God. Did you know that every letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a number assigned to it? God has used numbers to speak profound messages to His people for thousands of years and still does today. The number 3 often symbolizes the Trinity and divine perfection, while 33 can represent the death and resurrection of Jesus, or death unto life. We also explore the significance of numbers in triplicate, such as 333 or any other repeated number. When you encounter these patterns, God is likely highlighting His presence in your life and bringing a sense of completeness concerning what the number in triplicate signifies. However, each occurrence is an invitation to seek deeper understanding from God. To learn more about these numbers and how to interpret them in your life, seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and be sure to tune in to this week's episode of Breathing Underwater!Resources mentioned: Numbers That Preach by Troy Brewer Googling the Hebrew meaning of a given number Hebrew linguistics for numbers 1-40 Strong's Concordance Scripture!

Fall is here! And with it, a new season of the Breathing Underwater podcast, where we dive into the deep things of God and explore the mysteries of how He speaks to us through dreams. As we transition into the fall season, we're also discussing a common dream: the falling dream. This type of dream often reflects areas in your life where you feel out of control or unable to change the outcome. The context of your dream matters—were you alone when you fell? Did you jump, or were you pushed? The details can reveal more about what God is highlighting in your life. Remember, dreams are not just about conveying information; they are an invitation to draw closer to God and seek His guidance. With Labor Day approaching, we're also talking about pregnancy dreams. These are more common than you might think and - believe it or not - are not just for women. These dreams often symbolize that you are spiritually pregnant with something new that God is bringing forth in your life. It could be a new job, season, relationship, or opportunity. Pay attention to the details in your dream: how far along are you? This could provide insight into what God is doing in your life. Be sure to ask God what He is birthing through you and be open to the journey of discovery!Join us as we fall into a new season, exploring these themes and more, as we grow in intimacy with God and understanding the language of dreams!*Scripture References: Genesis 15:1; Genesis 20:1-7; Genesis 28:10-17“He's giving us keys to pray to bring His kingdom to earth.”“Don't forget…learning to interpret your dreams isn't just about getting information. This week we refresh ourselves on one of the most pivotal live dream interpretation episodes of the Breathing Underwater series: The Baby Factory. Originally released in Episode 14 of Season 1, Margaux's dear friend and fellow dream interpreter, Heather, joins the show and shares a POWERFUL dream. Without prior interpretation, the two stumble upon one of the most profound and weighty messages for us to hear (and heed) as underwater breathers. This episode is holy, convicting, and an invitation for all of us to walk in purity, righteousness, and wholehearted yieldedness so that we can align with the fullness of what Jesus paid for and has designed for each of our lives. Margaux and Heather discuss the cost of saying yes to God's best above our ‘good enough', and the very real temptation to settle for a desire - even a good one - before its time. We revisit the Garden of Eden and how the enemy uses many of the same tricks to keep us tethered to cyclical patterns of dysfunction that inhibit us from fully stepping into our God-given identities. The message gleaned from The Baby Factory is for everyone: it's a summons to draw near to God, no matter your choices or stage of life, and remember that the blood of Jesus can take care of anything. If you missed it the first time around - and even if you didn't - you'll want to listen to this Summer Refresh; it is brimming with heavenly revelation and divine insight into what we are called to as a people.*Scripture References: Song of Solomon 8:4; Matthew 7:11; James 1:17; Romans 8:37“I didn't realize the cost of waiting on God's timing or even just taking things into my own hands…it looks like laying it down on the altar. It looks like watching the fire hit the altar and watching your dreams burn, that's what the waiting looks like. It looks like not keeping it on the back burner so that maybe you could pull it out later.”“With God, the cost is always upfront. He's not shady about the cost. He is very truthful, very honest, but the cost is unto a reward. With this other scenario, with us choosing to partner with the flesh, the reward comes first and then the cost.”More on Breathing Underwater Membership HEREInterested in 1:1 coaching with Margaux: Free Consultation HERE https://PermissiontoReign.as.me/?appointmentType=39971876Join the Community and Newsletter HERE Email: margaux@permissiontoreign.comInstagram: @permission_to_reignIntro Music by Coma-Media from PixabayImage by Claire Fischer from Unsplash

"Breathing Under Water" is a new series (based on a book by Richard Rohr) that explores Christian spirituality and the 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. In this first message, we explore the link between addiction and sin, revealing how these dynamics often trap individuals in self-destructive cycles. Paradoxically, it's by acknowledging our powerlessness that we find the strength to seek solutions beyond ourselves. Whether you or a loved one grapple with addiction or some kind of unwanted behavior, join us on this transformative journey toward healing and recovery.Video, "Nuggets" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUngLgGRJpo. Book: Richard Rohr, "Breathing Under Water: Spirituality and the Twelve Steps" (Franciscan Media 2011).Ego in Contemplative Christianity: In the Christian contemplative tradition, the term ego describes a way of thinking and being in the world that is driven by a compulsion to control. It is a false self that sees everything through the lens of its own personal hurts, needs, and memories, making it self-centered, defensive, judgmental, and easily wounded. When ego is in charge, we take things personally, and when offended we feel driven to retaliate tit-for-tat. It construes life as a zero-sum game in which there are winners and losers, then strives for superiority, obsessing over achievement and public perception. Ego is dualistic, painting the world in black and white extremes. As such, it is arrogant, riddled with illusions, and blinded to deep truth. Ego causes us to constantly compare ourselves with others, is neurotically self-reliant, and must always be in control. I must control my thinking and feeling, as well as my actions, my image, and how other people see me. I must also control the thoughts, feelings, and actions of others. I must control my environment to feel safe. I must control every aspect of life to meet my own needs, fix my own problems, and secure my own future. If this message is a blessing, you can support our ministries by donating at www.fumccb.com.  Speaker: Pastor Mark Reynolds Venue: First United Methodist Church (Cocoa Beach, FL) Connect with Pastor Mark:www.revmarkreynolds.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PastorMarkReynolds

“We're missing the point here; I think what we we need to address is the burglary that's going on.” First aired in Episode 7 of Breathing Underwater, Margaux interprets a dream of her own, offering a timely word and inviting the Body into a “stake in the ground” moment regarding the sacredness and holiness of dream interpretation. There has been a “burglary” in the territory of dream interpretation and we need to address it. The bulk of what we find as we search out answers to dreams, name meanings, numbers, and other symbols is unfortunately rooted in witchcraft/New Age beliefs. It is imperative that we reclaim this territory as sacred and holy; it belonged to God first. As humans, we can desire knowledge and wisdom outside of relationship (e.g. The Fall in Genesis); it is still a temptation for us today. As Believers, the heart of dream interpretation is and has always been an invitation to deeper intimacy and relationship with God. Join us in this Summer Refresh as we remind ourselves of practical ways to protect the holiness of dream interpretation, and what it looks like to move forward after this “stake in the ground” moment.*Scripture References: Proverbs 9:1; Genesis 1:3-5; Genesis 3:1-6“The purity and the holiness of this topic has been burglarized for a long time. And it's time to make it sacred again. This is His and it's always been His. And in this podcast we are going to take every measure to protect the holiness and the sacredness of this. This is something that is very important to me, and deep down, at the core of who I am, is to call holy what is holy and call sacred what is sacred and to protect it.”“It is all about relationship; this is one of the main differences of interpretation that we're going to see in the world…We are relying on a different spirit. We are relying on the Holy Spirit of God. We are also getting this interpretation…because we want to know Him more and we want to know ourselves more. We're not going after information for information's sake - we're going after intimacy. This is a really big difference.”More on Breathing Underwater Membership HEREInterested in 1:1 coaching with Margaux: Free Consultation HEREJoin the Community and Newsletter HERE Email: margaux@permissiontoreign.comInstagram: @permission_to_reignIntro Music by Coma-Media from PixabayImage by Claire Fischer from Unsplash

Episode 65 Summer RefreshAs we enter into as CRAZT HOT WEEK in Northern California ( think triple digits )- Summer has arrived. This episode is the first in the Summer series of Breathing Underwater called “The Summer Refresh”. In this episode Margaux shares 3 reasons for the title Summer Refresh as well as 3 practical ways to intentionally engage with the new physical and spiritual season of summer with a return to simplicity and refreshment in the truth of the Gospel, as God as our first lover and to the foundations of biblical, spirit lead dream interpretation. Here are the practical ways to engage with the reset: Get a dream journal or a new dream journal. Or create a new folder on your phone. Set some time apart to go back through the last quarter of your dreams and reflect. Are there any patterns you see in your dream content? Are there any dreams that have been fulfilled? Make a new folder or tag them so they go into a new mental category. Look at your summer and ask Holy Spirit to help you find a REALISTIC rhythm of time to spend with your dreams. Time to seek out God: "For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened”. Matthew 7:8 Take an honest assessment of your days and set goals that are realistic and life-giving.Summer brings something different for all of us. For some it's a winding down, others it's a ramping up and many have lives that stay the same. But let's acknowledge the change in season and respond to the newness of it but taking a pause to re-align, re-set and intentionally seek God for His voice in our lives.More on Breathing Underwater Memberships HERENeed Help with dreams or discerning God's Voice? We had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Mains & The Branches over Zoom video!Mike Mains & The Branches have always bottled complex emotions and relatable stories within hummable homegrown anthems. They have organically progressed over the course of Home [2012], Calm Down, Everything Is Fine [2014], and When We Were In Love [2019]. Billboard hailed the "buoyant pop" of the latter, while Atwood Magazine praised its "upbeat, energetic, feel-good pop-rock." Among many standouts, “Briggs” generated north of 4.8 million Spotify streams as "Breathing Underwater" and "Live Forever" each surpassed the 1 million-mark. After trading his native Michigan for Nashville, Mike underwent another era of transformation. Stuck at home mid-Pandemic, he retreated inward and began to understand his past and, ultimately, himself a bit more."Once COVID hit, I finally had the opportunity to allow some things to start boiling over," he elaborates. "I got serious about therapy, my mental health, and my well-being. I acknowledged wounds that had been on the backburner for my entire life. I've been on my own since I was 16, and I come from a family of physical and mental abuse. By living alone and crashing on couches over the years, I've cobbled together a wonderful surrogate family. Growing up, my dad was like, 'You'll never make it'.' Part of me was pleased to find success, move to Nashville, buy a home, and support myself and my wife off rock 'n' roll. Nevertheless, all of this pain came up. So, these songs are little vignettes and snapshots of not only the relationship between my wife and I but what was happening in the world with George Floyd and America's heartbreaking response."We want to hear from you! David Fleming speaks with Anoushka Shankar. The initial conversation was when she was in the area to perform, with orchestra, one of the concertos for sitar and orchestra written by her father, the late Ravi Shankar. Beyond the concerto works, we spoke about some of her other releases, as she'll be in the area quite soon in quintet form. A rather atypical grouping, though SO nice! We'll hear about this, a couple of her releases, "Rise" and "Breathing Underwater." We'll also hear about her work with Herbie Hancock, Sting, and more, as well as a VERY moving piece called "In Her Name," combining music, dance, and spoken word. Originally called "In Jyoti's Name," the piece is "in loving memory of Jyoti Singh Pandey, who was beaten and gang-raped on a bus in Delhi," leading to her death two days later. VERY powerful! Also touching lightly on Anoushka scoring one of India's first three movies ever made!

Do you see or hear things in the unseen world? Or have you desired the deeper things of God but are not sure how to learn about without feeling like you are weird? Margaux Nelson has learned how to listen and partner with God with difficult circumstances. She has always been an emotionally sensitive and spiritually sensitive person. She had many deep experiences she had no language for. She finally realized there wasn't something wrong with her and she wasn't “weird”, but she learned that there is a real spiritual realm and the things she was sensing and feeling were real. She realized she is wired to have authority in the unseen realm. She experienced freedom from this and is now learning how to steward the gifts and operate in this wisdom. Each one of us was born to be in the deep unseen things with God. Margaux's podcast is called “Breathing Under Water” and this podcast interview will do just that: bring you in the deep things of God like dreams and visions. You will hear a deep dive into the mysterious language of dream interpretation and how you can operate from your true identity in Christ. “'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” ~Acts 2:17 Margaux's website: https://www.permissiontoreign.com/ To listen to the Breathing Under Water Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/breathing-underwater-a-dream-interpretation-podcast/id1674097621 Heidi's website: https://heidimortensonlmft.com/ If you are in crisis, help is available by call or text 1-800-273-8255 24/7. Wholistic Hearts: A Mother’s Wholehearted Christian Approach to Spiritual Growth and Transformational Healing

Hey friends, you're in for a treat in today's episode. I'm sitting down with my incredible friend Margaux, the host of Breathing Underwater: A Dream Interpretation Podcast.  Through her journey, she discovered that dreams serve as a means of divine communication, allowing God to speak, guide, and provide valuable insights. God skillfully employs these symbols to capture our attention and convey profound truths.  Margaux also sheds light on the ways in which God speaks through dreams. She encouraged listeners to ask God what He is bringing up in their dreams, exploring the deeper meanings behind the symbolism presented. She explained metaphors play a significant role in dream interpretation, and it becomes less intimidating when we bring these metaphors to God. Margaux emphasized the importance of inviting God into the realm of dreams, seeking His wisdom and guidance. She encouraged individuals to ask God to speak to them through their dreams and to turn to scripture when deciphering symbolic representations. She is a vessel for those seeking a deeper understanding of the profound world of dream interpretation.   Listen to Breathing Underwater   Want to plug into our free Facebook community? Sounds of SAND
#28 Christianity and Unknowing: Richard Rohr

Sounds of SAND

From the SAND Archives we present two talks from Christian Mystic, Richard Rohr from two SAND Conferences recorded before live audiences. The two talks are entitled “Christianity and Unknowing” from SAND16 and “The Christian Meaning Of Enlightenment” from SAND11. Richard Rohr, as a Catholic priest and Franciscan Friar, offers a concise history of how Western Christianity once had, soon lost, tried to retrieve, and now is roundly rediscovering its own traditional understanding of unitive consciousness (which was our word for non-dual thinking). The Christian contemplative mind was usually a subtext, and yet it was always clearly there too, and much closer to the surface, but only for those exposed to the mystical base that was revealed in the Gospel of John, the Desert Fathers and Mothers, the Celtic and monastic traditions, and what was generally referred to as the apophatic or wisdom stream of Christianity. These were our many saints and mystics. This possibility was brought to the fore by Thomas Merton in the middle of the last century, and is now flowing in many positive directions. It is now our task to rediscover the pre-Enlightenment Christianity that reveled in "the cloud of unknowing", what some called "learned ignorance", and the very notion of Mystery itself. Only when we got into competition with rationalism and secularism, did we adopt this rather recent mania for certitude and a very limited kind of scientific knowing. Almost the entire history of Protestantism emerged in this period, and thus the contemplative mind is an utterly new revelation for them, and frankly for all of us, as we again learn to be comfortable living on the edge of both the knowable and the unknown. Fr. Richard Rohr is a globally recognized ecumenical teacher bearing witness to the universal awakening within Christian mysticism and the Perennial Tradition. He is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fr. Richard's teaching is grounded in the Franciscan alternative orthodoxy—practices of contemplation and self-emptying, expressing itself in radical compassion, particularly for the socially marginalized. Fr. Richard is the author of numerous books, including Everything Belongs, Adam's Return, The Naked Now, Breathing Under Water, Falling Upward, Immortal Diamond, and Eager to Love: The Alternative Way of Francis of Assisi. https://cac.org/

Ben Gosden, pastor of Trinity Church in Savannah Georgia takes us on a deep dive into addiction, recovery and ministry. Years into a success ministry as a United Methodist pastor, Ben found himself struggling with alcoholism. Listen in as he shares a powerful testimony about the transformational power of 12 steps. We don't merely talk about alcoholism but about the deeper roots of addiction. Addiction isn't really even the problem per se; addiction is a solution but its a bad solution to even deeper problems. This week as we head toward Christmas, we explore the God of impossible things. If the impossible story of God becoming a human is true, then that changes everything, for everyone, forever. I am particularly mindful this week of those who feel unwelcome at church or those for whom Christmas might be a particular struggle - I pray you will feel the truth of Emmanuel - of God with us (all of us!), both inside and outside of church walls. I flew to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to spend the day with Father Richard Rohr. We laughed, I cried a little, we laughed some more, and I told him why his work pisses me off sometimes. He thoroughly delighted in that last part. In Part 1 of this special two-part series recorded at the Center for Action and Contemplation, we focus on his writing in Breathing Under Water: Spirituality and the Twelve Steps and just a few of the quotes — on spirituality, suffering, gratitude, and grace — that have changed and rearranged me over the years.
