What is alternative dispute resolution and how might law students get a feel for the discipline before entering legal practice? In this episode, we chat with Dr Rosemary Howell and Niki Nojoumian about ADR, finding your place at law school, and UNSW Law Society's skills competitions. Dr Howell teaches postgraduate Principled Negotiation at UNSW. She is a nationally accredited mediator and has appeared in the International Who's Who of Mediation since 2013. Her company Strategic Action also provides consulting services on planning, facilitation and training to State and Federal entities around the globe. Niki is the UNSW Law Society's skills Vice President. Her portfolio facilitates competitions that provide students with the opportunity to develop and refine legal skills in a practical setting outside of a classroom. BarNet JADE (Judgments and Decisions Enhanced) is a leading free online research platform in Australia and contains an extensive database that collects recent decisions of selected Australian Courts and Tribunals. JADE provides free JADE Professional to all law students for the duration of their studies, and when students sign up, they will also receive a free Law Exam Guide. Currently, JADE is starting to roll out regular Student Training to improve their skills. Why work in human rights? What meaningful work can you do to support human rights? In this special public interest careers episode of InCites, Vice-President (PIC) Amal Naser has a conversation with Palestinian Australian human rights lawyer and executive director of the Australian Centre of International Justice, Rawan Arraf. Rawan has ten years of legal experience in refugee protection, administrative law and international human rights law. Rawan most recently worked as a refugee lawyer at community legal centre, Refugee Advice & Casework Service providing a wide range of protection advice to people seeking asylum in Australia.
