Ambassador Cindy Courville joins Mike Shanley to discuss her work as the first Ambassador for the African Union. She talks about what it was like to enter into that role and how she worked with African Leaders to ensure their voices were heard, as well as what it meant to them to have someone assigned to Africa. Ambassador Courville describes the way the relationships have changed throughout different Presidencies and that it is critical to choose our next President based on the needs of other countries. Lastly, Ambassador Courville talks about what someone looking to get started in the development and diplomatic sector should be focused on. Tune in to learn more about the African Union. IN THIS EPISODE: [1:49] What is Ambassador Courville's view on global security? [2:43] What does she see as the interplay between intelligence and development in promoting development outcomes? [5:32] What was Ambassador Courville's experience being the first Ambassador to the African Union and what was her role? [9:25] How have the policies changed since the first implemented policies? [14:28] What did it mean to the African Leaders to have an Ambassador assigned to them? [16:25] Has there been momentum on the foundation of engagement with African nations and leaders under the Biden administration? [19:56] How do the current African leaders see geopolitical options to them in the US, China, and other nations? [24:26] What is Ambassador Courville's insight on good development and the importance of interagency work? [27:25] What is Ambassador Courville's insight to someone that wants to cut development funding or diplomatic funding? [31:53] Ambassador Courville's advice for someone getting started in the development or diplomatic sector. KEY TAKEAWAYS: If we fall or shift to a more authoritarian situation, that is not in the best interest of African countries or developing countries in general. We need to have a democracy and a leadership that is focused on maintaining democracy, not curtailing the rights and freedoms of Americans. The more politically and economically stable we are, the less you have to use other tools, and you only want to use those other tools in the most extreme situations. QUOTES: [21:35] “The Africans have been extremely forgiving and understanding. I would say, extremely democratic in their outlook, so they recognize the dynamics and shifts on a level that the average American just doesn't get. I'm not just talking the leadership of Africa, but the people themselves, and so you can't expect them not to engage.” - Ambassador Cindy Courville [24:33] “If I were writing the policy for USAID today, or for the administration, not just for Africa, but in general, I would say we need to increase the size of USAID. USAID's mission is so huge, but the number of personnel and NGOs are great, but we need more continuity in that process.” - Ambassador Cindy Courville [31:19] “We haven't resolved our civil war issues, women's issues, all of those things that are fundamentally part of a democracy.” - Ambassador Cindy Courville RESOURCES: NSL4A Steering Committee Aid Market Podcast Aid Market Podcast YouTube BIOGRAPHY: Ambassador (retired) Cindy Courville, Ph.D. currently serves on the executive board of the National Security Executives and Professional Association (NSEPA) and as a member of the Steering Committee of the Leadership Council for Women in National Security (LCWINS). It's well-documented that international assignments for dual-career couples can be both exhilarating and complicated at the same time. Many organizations with international talents have not fully understood the complexities of dual international career couples in their workforce. This is what usually happens: One career takes precedence over the other Two partners equally sub-optimize their careers They individually pursue two careers at the expense of the family. Often, as dual international career couples, we tend to focus on the challenges and issues that arise in creating meaningful and fulfilling lives and careers. This episode offers valuable solutions and explores the keys to success for dual-career couples living abroad. Guests Jannie Aasted Skov-Hansen and Dr. Paul Vanderbroeck, are the co-authors of the groundbreaking book, "The International Career Couples Handbook”, which explores real-life challenges of dual career couples and provides a new way to approach international mobility. It provides a good structure for the deep reflections and discussions you need to have as an international Career couple. Based on their lived experiences and extensive research this book offers great insights for both ICCs and organizations. Both are partners in an ICC ( International career couple) and parents. Jannie is also the Founder of Here We Are Global, a startup consultancy dedicated to supporting ICCs in their global careers. Paul is an Executive Coach and accomplished researcher in gender balance and leadership development. As I've mentioned in the podcast previously, my husband and I hold the same degree, and I have over 15 years of experience working with international organizations This handbook and Jannie's and Paul's knowledge provide powerful tools to navigate dual international careers with more ease. I highly recommend reading this handbook and so some of the powerful exercises they share. Here are the top highlights you'll learn in this episode: The difference between an international career couple and a dual-career couple Gaps that International Organizations overlook when it comes to international career couples (ICC's) Four unique challenges that ICC's face, How to overcome them, and create lasting success Juggling the packing, decisions, and career moves can make one feel uneasy. CAREER-VIEW MIRROR - biographies of colleagues in the automotive and mobility industries.
Preston moved to Lloyds Banking Group in 2022 to lead their OEM Captive Finance Partnership, Jaguar and Land Rover Financial Services. The vast majority of Preston's career has been in Sales & Marketing roles in the OEM Financial Services space where he's tried to get as close to the promotion and sales process as possible. His career has been roughly split between South Africa and the UK, where he's now permanently based. Preston spent almost 20 years with the BMW Group and since 2010 has been in various General Sales Management and Director positions across South Africa & the UK. In our conversation we talk about his childhood in South Africa, his early love of all things automotive and how he found his way into the industry. Some of the key takeaways for me in this conversation include: how he found school relatively easy academically until what's known in South Africa as standard 8 when he needed to apply himself more the impact of subjects that interest us and the ability of a good teacher to make a subject engaging that he was an all rounder into sport, academic subjects and got involved in the plays too his awareness of being too far away from the decision makers from his earliest job when he was filling shelves for Glaxo Smith Kline how a conversation with a mother of two girls at his school had a contact in BMW, that led to an almost 20 year career with that brand his experience being on the phones to customers in his early days at BMW FS SA where the size of the organisation made for a highly effective customer feedback loop a recurring theme of Preston noticing the level of challenge reduce after time in any role the story about bringing together four disparate teams during COVID and them becoming a strong team his realisation that upward progress would require international mobility and preferring to opt for some stability for his children and the vital role played by his wife to enable him to follow this career I have known Preston since 2006 and am delighted to be able to introduce him to you in this episode. As always, I look forward to hearing what resonates with you. Using natural language and sentiment analysis, our AI, with its 100+ million parameters, can classify tweets as bearish, neutral and bullish. Our dataset uses over a quarter of a million messages that we have manually labeled to train our AI model. Currently it achieves over 97% accuracy and is getting better by the day.. After aggregating this information, we produce real-time indices of whether the market considers an asset to be bearish, neutral or bullish." - https://www.ellisense.com/ In this episode, we focused on Elsa's career path and what drove her to move overseas and start her own businesses.
