Erik Distler is responsible for overseeing AEG Sustainability, the organization's corporate sustainability program. In this capacity, he focuses on global strategies and tactics that address operational impacts and capture and measure data across key environmental metrics, such as greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and waste reduction. He also supports AEG's global business units in the implementation and execution of sustainability initiatives, manages external partnerships related to sustainability, facilitates the sharing of best practices, and ensures that sustainability is a source of value across the company. Distler has worked at the intersection of environmental and social responsibility in sports and entertainment for more than ten years. Before joining AEG, he built and led the sports-focused sustainability strategy and program at Nike. Prior to Nike, he was with the Green Sports Alliance where he oversaw relationships with corporate partners, live entertainment events, professional sports leagues and clubs, sports governing bodies, and collegiate schools and conferences, as well as working extensively with ESPN. He also spent time as a sustainability consultant with PwC. Distler began his career in accounting and finance, where he worked for Deloitte and The Siegfried Group LLP for the first seven years of his career. He received his Master of Public Administration (MPA) in Sustainable Management from Presidio Graduate School and his Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance from Iowa State University, graduating with Honors and High Distinction.. Erik Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: How AEG manages sustainability at large events like music festivals Piloting initiatives at smaller events to apply learnings and replicate at larger events Incorporating reusable materials at events in partnership with Our World Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Erik's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I would say have as many conversations as you can. Sustainability departments are often departments and functions that are in service to the business. We tend to operate as internal consultants. So how can we be everywhere at the same time? How can we ensure that every part of the business has the opportunity to build sustainability into their work? How do we consult to provide subject matter expertise to the business? The work we do within the department is measurement and data and setting sustainability targets and all that kind of exists within our function. But it all starts with having conversations. I wouldn't be afraid to sit down with someone and ask them more questions than provide statements on how they feel, how they perceive sustainability, where they feel as though it's working, where it's not working, what can we do more of that really helped build out our sustainability strategy. Do a little bit of a needs assessment on what stakeholders and partners value. The only other thing I'd say too secondary is, don't be afraid to start somewhere. I think we often feel as though the challenges we're up against are audacious and global and all encompassing, and they are. It can sometimes feel like we're out at sea against a massive challenge on our own  when we think of climate issues. That can freeze one up. It can stifle movement. You can feel like, "well, what can I do? I can't possibly make a difference." It's amazing what just taking one small step can lead to. There's been this kind of backlash against incrementalism in the space, like we need big changes, not incremental changes, but I don't know that I agree with that. I think an incremental quick change that you can grow on and iterate from can turn into something very big. So don't be afraid to start somewhere. Start with something that you can measure, for sure. But have those conversations and turn those small steps into big steps. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? There's a lot to be excited about. When realizing the gravity of the issue that we're facing, I think it's important to find sources of encouragement and hopefulness. There's really no other way. There's a line by Walt Kelly from his pogo comic strip many years ago that says, “we are confronted with insurmountable opportunities.” I use that and refer to that a lot. Try to figure out what is the opportunity in front of us and be optimistic about it. I think there's an excitement around the external forces. They're becoming louder and more influential, and that's encouraging. Our fans, our partners, our sponsors, our artists and entertainers. There's more of a voice and more influence that is being laid upon us and expected from us. I think collaboration is increasing cross-sector research companies that are competitive coming together in a pre-competitive way. Higher education institutions are pulling us in to do research that will help us in our business. We're seeing a lot of that. There's also a healthy kind of push, pull and engagement among our partners and sponsors. There's that untapped space with partnerships and sponsorships where it's determining inventory and the assets and how sustainability can be valued and monetized, but the conversations that we're having with partners or potential partners around shared goals, targets, aspirations, and what we can do together to help achieve our individual sustainability goals, kind of matches up. There's a lot of energy and excitement around that. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? One is Thinking in Systems by Donella Meadows. It's a book that'll retrain your brain to consider the interconnectedness of literally everything around you. And then Natural Capitalism by Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins and L. Hunter Lovins. It's that seminal book on environmental economics. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? I read Green Bizz, 3BL and Triple Pundit. We get a lot of resources from our longtime partner, Schneider Electric. We've worked with them for many years and they have webinars and lots of sessions and thought leadership that we use a lot. I also keep up on the guidance from the GHG protocol, the EPA, the UN. In our space in particular, there are two organizations that are co- holding up the movement, Green Sports Alliance on the sports side and a more newly formed music sustainability alliance on the music side. We look to these two entities to hold and convene us, and there's a lot of good research and thinking coming out of those orgs as well. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at AEG? Our website, aegworldwide.com. There's an About Us dropdown at the top, and we have a somewhat newly revamped sustainability page and more changes coming. We're building out a microsite off that page when we have our next generation sustainability goals finalized. We'll have all that good stuff up there. We also have case studies or what we call sustainability stories up on that page. Also under About Us, you can read about our social impact and DEI functions as well. We have a Twitter account, we recently rebranded it from AEG One Earth to the handle, @AEGSustain or the account name, AEG sustainability. We're trying to get information up there. And of course, LinkedIn is a great place to reach out to myself or anyone from our sustainability team.

Leadership expert, Harvard Business School Senior Lecturer and bestselling author of Friendly Fire Scott A. Snook discusses what he's learned over his time in the military and academia about what it takes to lead. Snook, a decorated veteran and victim of friendly fire himself, studies these incidents of tragedy as a way to make sense of — and ultimately prevent — organizational dysfunction. Among other things, they discuss why every leadership program should cover “followership” and the art of managing up; how leaders fundamentally cannot control outcomes, and can only shift the odds; the importance of finding the right balance between high challenge and high support; and why ultimately, what leaders need most is self-awareness and self-acceptance — or, in other words, to be both socially intelligent and secure.       Learn about:   11:42 How Scott describes leadership 14:13 The deep connection between leadership and “followership” 19:00 The organizational lessons from a “friendly fire” incident 23:45 Why your core values are so critical for leaders 28:58 The worst attribute in a leader 29:52 The intersection of high performance, high support and high challenge 38:22 Scott's summary lessons for leaders       —  Scott A. Snook graduated with honors from West Point, earning the Royal Society of Arts Award for the most outstanding overall cadet in his class. Following graduation, he was commissioned in the US Army Corps of Engineers, where he served in various command and staff positions for over 22 years, earning the rank of Colonel before retiring in 2002. He has led soldiers in combat. Among his military decorations are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Master Parachutist badge. He has an MBA from the Harvard Business School, where he graduated with High Distinction as a Baker Scholar. Dr. Snook earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in Organizational Behavior, winning the Sage-Louis Pondy Best Dissertation Award from the Academy of Management for his study of the Friendly Fire Shootdown in Northern Iraq. Until July of 2002, Colonel Snook served as an Academy Professor in the Behavioral Sciences and Leadership Department at the United States Military Academy. He also directed West Point's Center for Leadership and Organizations Research as well as its joint Master's Program in Leader Development. Scott's passion is to help others live more "meaning-full" lives. More specifically, he is interested in unpacking and understanding transformational leader (human) development experiences --how to make the most out of life's curriculum, as well as how to create high-leverage/high-impact interventions to accelerate the growth of leaders. Professor Snook's book Friendly Fire was selected by the Academy of Management to receive the 2002 Terry Award as the most influential book on managerial thinking published during the past two years. He has also co-authored a book that explores the role of "common sense" in leadership titled, Practical Intelligence in Everyday Life (2000) and co-edited The Handbook for Teaching Leadership: Knowing, Doing, and Being (2011). Most recently, he co-authored The Discover Your True North Fieldbook (2015), which is the primary text for “Authentic Leader Development,” the popular MBA elective he has taught for over 10 years. Professor Snook has shared his leadership insights in formal executive education programs at Harvard and with numerous corporate audiences around the world.   ABOUT LET GO & LEAD   Let Go & Lead is a leadership community created by Maril MacDonald, founder and CEO of Gagen MacDonald. It starts by knowing who you are.”“Mindset is not something that you either have or don't have. The key is to figure out how to build it up and sustain it for long-term performance.” Positive mindset starts by being self aware. Figure out what your 3-5 core values are and use them as your guiding compass,  I encourage people to think about the glass half full analogy. Can we refill the glass? Is there room for more abundance? If you start believing you have an unlimited amount of potential, it will be so powerful. It's important to focus on what you are most passionate about. What do you feel like you can stick with for months, years, or even decades? When you can figure that out is when you will be able to ignite the grit within yourself. Connect with Brian:⭐ Connect on Instagram @ourmindvue⭐ Website - https://www.mindvue.com/⭐ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/brian-davidson-0273a5b6/ Connect with Allison:⭐ Connect on Instagram @allisonwalsh⭐ JOIN OUR FREE COMMUNITY: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shebelievedshecouldcommunity⭐ Check out book recommendations from the show here⭐ Download your free 90 day planner here

It's never been more expensive to complete a qualification at an Australian University.  At the same time, it's never been more difficult, stressful, and financially punishing to work at one.Australia's tertiary education system has become obsessed with revenue streams, and at the heart of that strategy is making sure they keep the cost of staffing to a minimum. That has resulted in academic and professional staff being stuck in endless cycles of insecure and casual work for years on end.Whilst University management rakes in huge executive fees and bonuses, staff are dependent on seasonal work that may disappear at any time. Alison Barnes is the President of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU). David Harris is a career academic at Swinburne University and the University of New South Wales. Both of them are busing campaigning to restore permanent work and decent conditions for workers on Australian Uni campuses. They are our guests on today's pod. _____________________________________________________________ * You can now email us with your comments, story ideas, tip-offs, flip offs, and questions - otjpodcast@protonmail.com *On the Job is made by Australian Unions. The recent release of Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of  Frank Herbert's Dune got us Preverts thinking back to a simpler time. A time when neo-liberalism was just a babe in the crib, when rap was a mere novelty genre and getting laid was in the realm of possibility. Yes, 1984! The year that David Lynch's version of Dune was released. Long pilloried as a colossal flop, Azed and Jay find a lot to admire in Lynch's mess of a movie, and also a lot to admire in Villeneuve's solemn, faithful update. Luckily, Azed's son, Ishmael (Recent U of T graduate-BSC with High Distinction and the only one among us who has read the source material) is along to school us on the whole Dune ethos and to set us straight on how recent accusations of "White Savior" syndrome miss the mark of Herbert's Magnum Opus. Still, while Villeneuve's film is a beautiful spectacle, some of us prefer Sting in a leather diaper to Timothy Chalamet attempting to act tough. It's a question of which is more believable?

They talk about how PropTech startups can get the attention of funders and VC's to partner and support their products go to market strategy or fund their scale up. Scottie and Marco share their best advice for any startups looking to secure funding, as well as their do's and don't's of fundraising.    Companies Mentioned: REIM Tech https://www.linkedin.com/in/naqash/?originalSubdomain=uk  PGIM site https://www.pgim.com/ La Salle https://www.lasalle.com/ Primarche https://primarche.ca/  Tableau https://www.tableau.com/    Shout Outs Naqash Tahir - https://www.linkedin.com/in/naqash/?originalSubdomain=uk Dropit - https://www.linkedin.com/company/dropit-shopping/    Key Insights From This Episode:   Alot of it is about the team, and then the technology or whatever they're trying to sell you. Because oftentimes they're very early on. And wherever they're trying to sell you today, it's going to evolve in six months, and that evolution is really going to be dependent on the team. - Scottie Is the problem that you're really trying to solve for us all that meaningful and impactful? Or is it maybe a secondary problem and maybe you're better off as a bolt-on feature to something else. - Scottie In terms of big don'ts, the one thing I can't stand is the constant email blasting that we're getting from multiple people within an organisation. It's just, it puts a red flag up to say, I'm out. I don't want to hear any more from you. You're done. - Marco I think there's lot of work in trying to connect, I would say, legacy systems with more modern technologies, particularly around their data and analytics and so forth. - Scottie Uou need to try things. You can't just stay with the status quo. So you need to be able to be open-minded understand what technologies that you're going to look at to embrace and bring into the organisation. - Marco   if we were going to engage and want to do something like a pilot, we need a little bit of suitability on partner side or on the vendor side. So those are some of the things that you try to pick at and try to get a good handle on before you really start to engage. - Scottie   Keywords: investment, proptech, retail, startups, institutions, failure, success   About Our Guests: Scottie Lee https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottie-lee-05a6313/  Scottie Lee is Vice President, Strategy & Research at Equity Residential in Chicago where he manages a team responsible for market research, sustainability, resilience, energy and environmental. Show Summary: Meet the candidate, Roger Barris, who is running for Congress in Colorado! Economist, entrepreneur, outdoorsman, and Libertarian, this man does it all! You won't want to miss this opportunity to get to know him more personally- sharp and professional, Roger is the libertarian everyone can get behind and support with stances that echo the call for freedom in all our hearts. Please check out his website, barris4congress.com and get familiar with this liberty warrior and candidate! So, Support The Show at PATREON About The Guest: Roger was born in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan, as the second child of Ivan and Mercedes (maiden name “Menendez”) Barris. Roger attended various public schools in the Detroit area before going to the University of Detroit High School. U of D is a parochial school located in Detroit and dedicated to the academic excellence of its racially and religiously diverse student body. He excelled at U of D, earning numerous academic awards and being elected class president. As importantly, a high school friend introduced Roger to the libertarian philosophy of “free minds and free markets” at the age of 17. He has been a libertarian since then. Roger then attended Bowdoin College in Maine, a so-called “Little Ivies” school. He was graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Economics in 1981 in 3 ½ years; he was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa and won other academic rewards. He spent his junior year at the renowned London School of Economics and Political Science. Bowdoin was also the beginning of his long-distance love affair with Colorado, to which he was introduced by one of his roommates, a Colorado native who has remained a friend to this day. Roger used his early departure from college to teach English for 15 months in Tokyo, Japan, and then returned to the USA to enter the MBA program at the University of Michigan in the fall of 1982. Studying finance, he excelled again, being graduated in 1984 with High Distinction and earning other academic awards. Roger also took his first step in Libertarian Party politics by running as a candidate for County Commissioner in Michigan in 1982. In 1984, Roger began working in the Treasurer’s Office of Exxon Corporation in New York City. Among other things, this job showed him that the absurd tax and regulatory environment meant that he, with clever structuring in NYC, could create far more earnings for the company than dozens of petroleum engineers in Houston. This is wrong. After a brief period with a consulting firm, in 1987 Roger was hired by Goldman Sachs and began his 26-year career (with an 18-month gap) as an investor and entrepreneur, typically in a leadership role. Groups that Roger led made over $20 billion of investments into companies with hundreds of employees. His teams never lost money during any year, including during the Financial Crisis of 2008, which he anticipated in his personal and professional investing. Roger has never been one to follow the herd. Roger quit working in NYC in early 1990 to move to France with the woman he would marry in 1994. While there, he taught finance at a local college, cycled in the lower Alps, and learned French. (Roger’s bilingual children would dispute this last claim.)When the money ran out in mid-1991, Roger was re-hired by Goldman Sachs in London. Later he would work for Deutsche Bank, Starwood Capital and Merrill Lynch. In 2010, Roger fulfilled his dream of becoming an entrepreneur when he (and his two partners) founded Peak side Capital, a high-performing manager of real estate funds for institutional and high-net-worth clients. Peak side has had offices in London, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany, Poland and Prag --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/blastoff/support

In the history of American politics, there are few stories as enigmatic as that of Alexander Hamilton and James Madison's bitterly personal falling out. Together they helped bring the Constitution into being, yet soon after the new republic was born they broke over the meaning of its founding document. Hamilton emphasized economic growth, Madison the importance of republican principles.Jay Cost is the first to argue that both men were right and that their quarrel reveals a fundamental paradox at the heart of the American experiment. He shows that each man in his own way came to accept corruption as a necessary cost of growth. The Price of Greatness reveals the trade-off that made the United States the richest nation in human history, and that continues to fracture our politics to this day.Jay Cost is a Visiting Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a columnist at National Review Online, a contributing editorial writer to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and a contributing editor at the Weekly Standard.
