Tiffany Kairos' life was filled with plans and excitement, but everything changed when she experienced her first seizure while driving. Her unexpected diagnosis with epilepsy led to a whirlwind of emotions and adjustments, forcing her to reevaluate her life and how she navigated her new reality. Tiffany has now been living with epilepsy for 16 years, and in our conversation we discussed the challenges and triumphs that come with managing a chronic condition. However, Tiffany's story is not just about her diagnosis; it's about resilience, community, and the importance of education. It took Tiffany about two years to come to terms with her epilepsy. During this time, she found a sense of belonging and comfort by connecting with people online. With the help of her husband, she created the Epilepsy Network, an online community that has grown to nearly 30,000 members. This platform serves as a space for education, support, and breaking down the stigma surrounding epilepsy. Tiffany also runs a blog called Rise Above Epilepsy, where she shares her personal experiences and offers tips for others navigating similar challenges. Her passion for educating others about epilepsy is evident, and I can't wait to see where her journey takes her next. Foot drop - a difficulty in lifting the front part of the foot - is one of the most common issues I see with the people I work with. It can be caused by muscle weakness caused by muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy or motor neurone disease, or damage to the brain or spinal cord caused by a stroke, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis. There are many ways to manage foot drop - ranging from physiotherapy to electrical nerve stimulation - but my guest today is here to present what his company describes as the world's first truly adaptive shoes. Dr. Tyler Susco of Cadense shares his journey from being an engineer to developing a split treadmill for gait therapy at MIT, which eventually led to the creation of an innovative shoe. The shoe features a variable friction surface that helps users move more comfortably and confidently. The shoe underwent a pilot study, where participants experienced significant improvements in their gait mechanics and overall mobility. Feedback from beta testers, including individuals with MS and recovering from strokes, was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing newfound confidence and mobility. The shoe's impact on users' lives inspired Dr. Susco and his team to continue their work.Discover the story behind this revolutionary shoe designed to help individuals with foot problems due to stroke, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, and more. Listen to the episode for insights into the creation process and the impact on mobility, and learn about the research, trials, and get a glimpse into the future of mobility aids.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Did you know that music can improve our cognitive abilities and even aid rehabilitation for people with neurological conditions?Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Kirsten Smayda who holds a PhD in Auditory Cognitive Psychology, and we dove into the fascinating intersection of music, psychology, and health. Kirsten works at MedRhythms, and they are using the power of music and technology to redefine what's possible in brain health.Kirsten discovered the therapeutic potential of music while studying at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research has shown that learning to play an instrument can significantly improve our auditory processing and listening skills, which is particularly relevant in the context of neurological health. Our conversation highlights the role of neurologic music therapy to adress various rehabilitation goals, including improving speech, mobility, and cognitive functions through music-based interventions.Among other things, Kirsten underlines the importance of community in music-making, suggesting that engaging with others in musical activities can enhance motivation and provide emotional support for individuals facing health challenges.I think you'll agree that the future of music as a healing tool is exciting and full of potential!DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. In the second part of my conversation with former Michigan football player Brian Wallace, Brian shared his journey of coming to terms with his diagnosis and the emotional turmoil that accompanied it. He opened up about the initial fear and embarrassment he felt, especially as someone who had always been athletic. He expressed the difficulty of disclosing such personal news, particularly in a work environment. For nearly a decade, he kept his condition private, only revealing it when it became unavoidable. Throughout our conversation, we touched on the loneliness that often accompanies chronic illness. However, Brian has recently found his voice on social media, with his TikTok channel. Initially hesitant, he discovered that sharing his story not only helped him but also connected him with others facing similar challenges. He discussed the duality of his experience with MS - what it has taken away from him and what it can never take. He emphasized that while the disease has impacted his physical abilities, it cannot erase his accomplishments or the essence of who he is.As we wrapped up, Brian expressed his desire to start a podcast to further advocate for those with MS and to educate others about the realities of living with the disease. He is passionate about breaking down the stigma and ignorance surrounding MS, and I am excited to see where this journey takes him.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Lydia Guerrero founded Infusion Wear with a mission to create affordable adaptive wear, specifically designed for individuals undergoing medical treatments. Lydia was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2011, and her DMT infusion process was made more uncomfortable by having to struggle with clothing that was either too tight or cumbersome. After seeing an adaptive sweatshirt online that was priced at $140, she realized there was a gap in the market for affordable, functional clothing. With her husband's support, she took matters into her own hands, literally sewing zippers into sweatshirts to make her infusion experience more comfortable. Lydia's grassroots approach not only filled a personal need but also aimed to help others facing similar challenges. In my conversation with Lydia, we talked about the emotional impact of receiving her MS diagnosis, the motivation behind creating adaptive clothing, and the collaborative effort with family and friends to bring her vision to life. She shares her experience of transitioning to a power wheelchair and how it affected her work and interactions with patients.Summer emphasizes that being a physician is not just about treating physical ailments but also about understanding the emotional and spiritual aspects of health. This perspective is crucial, especially for patients dealing with chronic conditions like MS and NMO.Towards the end of our discussion, Dr. Summer shares her insights on the healthcare system and the challenges faced by both patients and providers. She addresses the frustrations of navigating insurance and the pressures that come with high patient loads. I recently enjoyed speaking with the incredible Dr. Summer about her remarkable story. I've been following her journey on TikTok, and I was eager to dive into her experiences with neuromyelitis optica (NMO), a condition that was initially misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis (MS). Summer's resilience and determination to overcome her challenges are truly inspiring. In the first part of a two-part interview, Summer shared her journey from being misdiagnosed with MS to receiving the correct diagnosis of NMO. She explained that NMO is often confused with MS due to their similarities, but it has distinct characteristics that can lead to more severe symptoms. Summer described her initial experiences with various treatments, including Gilenya and Tysabri, and how they didn't work for her condition. It was only after multiple attacks that her doctors reconsidered her diagnosis and adjusted her treatment plan.During our conversation, we discussed Dr. Summer's journey through misdiagnosis and the impact of her condition on her medical career, the emotional challenges of living with a chronic illness and the fear of unpredictability, advances in treatment options for NMO and the hope they bring to patients, and the power of resilience and determination in overcoming health challenges.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Habits play a crucial role in shaping our health and well-being, as I learned when I spent time with the incredible Amy Behimer. As well as having MS, Amy is a podcaster, a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, and a Doctor of Pharmacy. Amy emphasizes the importance of habits in improving our overall health and how changing habits can lead to positive outcomes in our lives. She also introduces the concept of "disease-modifying habits" (DMHs) that focus on six key areas: mindset, food, movement, rest and relaxation, connection, and good stresses. As you'll hear, habits are not just about the actions we take but also about how we tend to think and feel. By addressing these underlying aspects of habits, we can make significant changes in our lives. Amy mentions that habits have been proven to benefit our bodies, and by understanding the science behind habits, individuals can make informed decisions to improve their health. We also explore the ripple effect of habits, highlighting how the habits we cultivate today can be passed down through generations, creating a cycle of well-being.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Anthony (AJ) McGinty's MS journey began when he experienced symptoms of fuzzy vision when he was traveling for work, leading to a full diagnosis six years ago. As you'll hear, he and I share a lot of the same views about the importance of exercise and staying active when you have MS.In this episode, Anthony shares his personal journey of being diagnosed with MS and how he initially struggled to adjust to having a chronic illness at a relatively young age. Despite initial denial and shock, AJ now says that his life has actually improved post-diagnosis. He got married, became a parent, and discovered new career opportunities. This optimistic perspective on life in the presence of MS reflects his belief that the condition does not have to define your entire existence.AJ's advice for newly diagnosed people is to stay positive, avoid negative stories online, and seek support from the MS community. He emphasizes the importance of staying active and finding ways to adapt to the changes MS brings. His commitment to supporting others with MS is evident from his advocacy work, including his involvement in the upcoming Tap MS Out fundraiser on March 30th.Anthony's biggest triumphs, including becoming a black belt in jiu-jitsu and winning pro grappling matches, highlight his strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. Lyndsay Watterson has designed walking sticks used by Selma Blair and Christina Applegate. And if that's not impressive enough, she also performed death-defying circus moves at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. While Coldplay performed! After having arthritis since her teens, Lyndsay had knee replacement surgery at age 39. But an infection left her in more pain, so she took the decision to have the leg she describes as "not a team player" amputated. By this time, she'd already decided that, as a younger lady with a disability, Lyndsay wanted a cool, confident walking stick to help her find her own confidence again. So she created Neo-Walk sticks, gorgeous handmade walking aids in tactile acrylic, and lots of vibrant colors.Lyndsay's mission at Neo-Walk is to see disability normalized and for designers to embrace our needs in mainstream products. She is passionate about inclusion and wants to use her success to shout it from the rooftops. In this conversation, we talk about her health issues and the frustration she felt when seeing the lack of choice when it came to choosing her first walking aid. She also tells us about creating her first walking stick in her kitchen, the reaction she got when she used it, and all of the amazing things she has done - and continues to do.Links and resources:Visit Neo-WalkConnect with Neo-Walk on InstagramRead an article about Lyndsay's appearance on Dragon's Den UKWatch Lyndsay performing in the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic GamesFind out more about the DMAT Fitness Training programIf you're interested in having Kathy speak at your event, learn more hereYou can find Kathy Chester at:msdisrupted@gmail.comdisruptfitnessgym@gmail.com moveitorloseit109@gmail.com Connect with @msdisrupted on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok Here are some additional products that help Kathy deal with beating the Heat and Migraines. This is an Encore presentation of Episode 63 and one of my favorites from earlier in 2022. My guest was Shari Short, a comedian, writer, and, naturally, a developmental psychologist working in healthcare communications. Since her MS diagnosis in 2008, Shari has used humor to deal with MS, communicate about MS and cope with MS.In this episode, we talk about how Shari got started in comedy, her diagnosis with MS, her experiences of loss during the COVID pandemic, and why sometimes it can be ok to embrace the dark humor.Links and resources:Watch clips from Shari's One Woman Show, “It's My Mother's MS, I Just Have It” – Mom and Her Support Group and Don't Talk to Strangers, plus her series of MS Award VideosWatch Shari's standup that's NOT about MS – Being a Jewish Mother at ChristmastimeThink Outside The Product Box – an article that Shari wrote for Momentum MagazineShari's 10 Tips for Making Your Pharmaceutical TV Spot as Generic as PossibleConnect with Shari on TwitterFind out more about my new DMAT Fitness Training programVisit Disrupt Fitness You can find Kathy Chester atdisruptfitnessgym@gmail.com moveitorloseit109@gmail.com Instagram - @msmoveitorloseit @disruptfitnessgymHere are some additional products that help Kathy deal with beating the Heat and Migraines. Often on this podcast, we feature people with MS, talking to other people with MS, about living with MS. But this time, I wanted to provide an inside look into what it's like when your support person is the person you love and who lives with you. How do we make our relationships work so we can stay together, despite everything this crappy disease can throw at us? My guests are some of my favorite people from the MS world - Tyler Campbell, Chris Dunbar, Dan and Jennifer Digmann, and Julie Stamm. And where possible, I asked them to bring along their partners so we could hear both sides of the story - my own husband included! In the final part of this two-part interview, we talk about what we can do to escape MS, and also share the funniest MS moments from our relationships. We also talk about what those of us with MS would like to give to our partners.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Many people I've spoken to on the podcast have struggled to get an MS diagnosis, but Roxy Murray's story is especially frustrating. A UK-based podcaster, MS advocate, and fashionista, she first presented with MS at 18, waking up one day with double vision and intense headaches. They were rushed to hospital, undergoing an MRI and a Lumbar Puncture - standard tests for MS. However, Roxy was diagnosed with lupus, benign intracranial hypertension, and antiphospholipid syndrome. It would be almost another decade before Roxy was diagnosed with MS, by which point their disease had progressed. But the diagnosis wasn't the end of Roxy's problems, as they faced prejudice and disbelief as a young person of color living with MS - a so-called "white woman's disease." Nowadays Roxy advocates for the visibility of people of color to be included in the MS narrative. In our conversation, we talk about Roxy's work as a fashion stylist, their diagnosis, and subsequent advocacy work. Among other things, Roxy is passionate about removing the stigma surrounding mobility aids and holding space for under-recognized groups within the disability community. For the 100th episode of the Move It Or Lose It podcast, I'm delighted to welcome back a guest who assisted me in one of my first webinars. Dr. Laura Hancock, PhD is a Board Certified Neuropsychologist, specializing in the treatment of people with Multiple Sclerosis. In this episode, we talk about what a clinical Neuropsychologist does, the work that Dr, Laura does at the Cleveland Clinic, and our frustration that a lot of people with MS don't know the benefits that working with a Neuropsychologist can bring. Laura also talks about the things she has noticed about brain function in people recovering from the effects of the pandemic, why she chose to specialize in working with people with MS, and why she wants MSers to rewrite the rules in their own lives. We get on so well because she's a Disruptor like me!Thank you to all of the guests who have appeared on the podcast over the last 100 episodes! If you're newly diagnosed with MS or have had it for years, one of the first places you're going to look for advice and support is social media. But as we all know, there's a lot of misinformation out there, and there aren't too many medical professionals who have the skills to communicate on video, and even fewer who are MS specialists. One of my recently discovered favorites is @thatmsdoc on TikTok, aka the awesome Dr. Samantha Roman. And not only is Dr. Sam a Johns Hopkins-trained MS neurologist, but she's also living with her own MS diagnosis.Concluding this two-part interview, Dr. Sam talks about the increased role of social media in getting information to patients, as well as its importance in creating a sense of community for people diagnosed with chronic diseases, including MS. She also talks about how surprised she was by the initial response to her videos, her plans for the future, and her message for people with MS everywhere.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. After any Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis, one of the key things that you're going to need is a sense of community. And if you're looking for community online, more and more you will be looking on TikTok.There are a lot of MSers on TikTok but in this episode, I'm continuing to talk to one of the most established presences on that site, Paige Butas aka MSfighter 101. Paige uses her channel to show how she's adapting to life with MS and continuing to thrive. In the final part of our interview, Paige talks about how her MS reared its ugly head again following the COVID pandemic, which led to her canceling the marathons and half-marathons that she'd organized. She tells us how she refused to give up and kept moving, finding new ways to maintain her fitness. Paige uses her channel to show how she's adapting to life with MS and continuing to thrive. In the first part of this interview, Paige tells me about her life as an endurance sport junkie before the onset of her initial symptoms. Even when her first notable relapse grounded her in 2018, Paige still thought that the fact that she was at the peak of her physical fitness would carry her through. Paige also talks about the compassion that she learned through her diagnosis, her experience of choosing MS medication, and the fitness goals that she set for herself following her relapse. Although our primary focus on the podcast is Multiple Sclerosis, we're well aware that the diagnosis journey for different conditions can be very similar. For one thing, people often have no prior knowledge of their condition before they're diagnosed. In this episode, I talk to my friend Victoria Garner about her experience of being diagnosed with Chikungunya Virus. This is a viral disease that is spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. The most common symptoms of infection are fever and joint pain. But as you'll hear, Victoria also experienced brain fog and neurological issues, which will be all too recognizable to people with MS. And her initial symptoms were brushed off as being stress-related. Sound familiar?Victoria talks about when she first realized that something was wrong, her struggle to get a diagnosis, and the anger she felt at having to adapt to her new reality. She also talks about how much happier she is now that she has worked to make her life better than she ever could have imagined.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
