Ep. 97 Thomas Edison: Who Was Edison Really, Genius Inventor or Villainous Fraud?

History Fix

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2025 45:37

Thomas Alva Edison has always been portrayed as the greatest, most prolific by far American inventor. The man obtained over a thousand patents in his lifetime and is credited with inventing or improving upon devices that changed our world, our lives forever: the lightbulb, the phonograph, the motion picture camera, telegraphs, telephones, x-rays, and batteries. The list goes on. His contemporaries were blown away. But in recent decades, many have come to doubt Edison's genius. More recent Edison critics take a look at his impressive body of work with scrutiny. "He didn't really invent all of those things," they say. Modern minds are split on Thomas Edison. He's either a great American hero, inventor of our modern world, or an idea stealing fraud who ripped off other great minds and claimed the credit. But who was he really? Was Thomas Edison the real deal or do we need to rewrite the history books, giving back credit where credit is due? Check out zipOns from befree Adaptive Clothing here! In the 1950s a mysterious man appeared at Tokyo's Haneda airport. He looked normal enough, just a regular looking mid-thirties white guy in a suit there on a business trip. But when he presented his passport to airport officials, they were puzzled. The passport was unlike any they had ever seen before. It listed the man as being from a nation called Taured, a nation they had never heard of, a nation they were pretty sure didn't exist. When asked to point out Taured on a map, the man became confused. He pointed to the Principality of Andorra on the border of France and Spain. “It's supposed to be right here,” he said “it's been here for over a thousand years.” He couldn't understand why his country was no longer listed on a world map. Airport officials took the man to a hotel room for the night until they could interrogate him further the next day. They placed two guards outside the room to ensure he didn't escape but in the morning, the mystery man from Taured was gone without a trace. In the years since, many have speculated that the man from Taured came from another dimension, an alternate reality in which Taured really did exist between France and Spain. But how much of this story is actually true and how much is just the product of the game of historical telephone? Let's fix that.  Support the show! Join the Patreon (patreon.com/historyfixpodcast)Buy some merchBuy Me a CoffeeVenmo @Shea-LaFountaineSources: Snopes "The Mystery of the Man from Taured"All That's Interesting "Inside the Legend of the Mysterious Taured Man"Wikipedia "John Zegrus"Reddit post by user taraiochiUK Parliament "Frontier Formalities"Shoot me a message!

In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Amanda Phillips, the director and creator of BeWell, a company dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autoimmune diseases through thoughtfully designed apparel and products. As you'll hear, Amanda's story began with her struggle to manage Crohn's disease during long car rides, leading her to devise a makeshift emergency toilet using an ice cream bucket. This experience sparked her creativity and led to the development of the IV hoodie, designed to provide warmth and easy access for infusion treatments. In our conversation, we also touch on the challenges of starting and running a business, especially in the niche market of adaptive clothing.Amanda's commitment to the community is evident in her approach to product development, actively seeking feedback through a VIP Facebook group to ensure that the products meet the needs of her customers. She also highlighted upcoming products and the introduction of a patent-pending design aimed at providing even more versatility for medical access. This episode not only sheds light on the unique challenges faced by those with autoimmune diseases but also highlights how innovation and entrepreneurship can lead to practical solutions that enhance daily living. Amanda's story is a testament to the power of personal experience in driving change and creating products that offer comfort, dignity, and functionality to those who need them most.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. (21:44)Show Close (22:38)Guest Bio: Izzy Camilleri is one of Canada's leading and most celebrated fashion designers, and a pioneer in adaptive clothing. Izzy first ventured into the world of accessible clothing after initially doing custom work for a wheelchair user in 2004. It opened her eyes to the huge necessity for this type of clothing in the world. In 2022, Izzy received 2 awards for her adaptive line. She won the Innovation Award from the Women's Empowerment Awards and the Fashion Impact Award from the CAFA Awards. In 2006, she received CAFA's Womenswear Designer of the Year Award. Her adaptive line has been featured in the Royal Ontario Museum. For more than 39 years, she has designed custom clothing for an international clientele, crafted gorgeous collections featured in fashion magazines from Vogue to InStyle, and dressed celebrities like Daniel Radcliffe, Mark Wahlberg, Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie and David Bowie. Since 2009, Izzy has focused on inclusive fashion through her brand IZ Adaptive, with the mission to make great looking and well-fitting clothes accessible to everyone. To learn more about Izzy, visit www.izzycamilleri.com.See more of Izzy Camilleri on AMI-tv's Fashion Dis!Each episode of Fashion Dis celebrates the head-to-toe overhaul of a frustrated style seeker discouraged by an industry that lacks adaptive options. The Story of IZ Adaptive IZ Adaptive was launched in 2009 after fashion designer Izzy Camilleri spent a few years creating custom clothing for a client who was a wheelchair user living with paralysis. This experience opened her eyes to the clothing challenges and limitations people face while living with a physical disability. After years of creating these first custom pieces, Izzy realized that if her client had all these obstacles around clothing, there must be many others with the same issues. Izzy decided to hold a focus group meeting where other voices were heard around  the challenges, likes and dislikes around everyday clothing while living with a physical disability. With listening and learning, the seeds of creating a line of adaptive clothing were being planted.  After doing online research of the market, she saw that there was very little out there designed specifically for this demographic of people.  Most of what was available was for the elderly or for people living in long term care facilities. Clothing that was very dated in both design and fabric choice. Seeing this huge void in the market, Izzy saw this as an opportunity to create a line of clothes for people living with a disability, starting with modern wardrobe basics.   In June of 2009 IZ Adaptive was born.Izzy Camilleri was hailed a trail blazer pioneering the category of adaptive clothing in the form of fashionable, functional pieces. Her new and innovative work was called revolutionary. The path since that time has been long and hard, but Izzy kept it on life support, knowing the importance of what she was creating and how many lives IZ Adaptive positively affected. At the beginning of the pandemic, Izzy also created the first ‘Seamless Back Pant' which helps to reduce the risk of life threatening pressure sores.  This patented technology is the most important work Izzy has done throughout her long career. These pants have become an important staple in many of IZ Adaptives customer's wardrobes.Today, Izzy is seen as the Thought Leader in this space. IZ Adaptive has a global reach with its online store. Major media outlets have featured IZ, and museums have also displayed this work. Universities and colleges reach out as well to learn about this new and exciting category of clothing for their studies.IZ Adaptive continues to push boundaries, lead in innovation and is looking to the future with plans of big growth.  About The PulseOn The Pulse, host Joeita Gupta brings us closer to issues impacting the disability community across Canada.Joeita Gupta has nurtured a life-long dream to work in radio! Today on Be The Good with Kate: The amount of people who need adaptive clothing is a lot higher than you may think. But, before Joanne DiCamillo and Nikki Puzzo founded befree Adaptive Clothing, there were no adaptive options on the market. Think: clothing that can fit around casts, clothing that is safe for people who have no feeling in their legs and may not notice a zipper digging into them, clothing that is created in a way so someone with tactile challenges is still able to have the independence of dressing his or her self. After seeing Nikki's daughter Stella struggle to get dressed while dealing with a massive surgery and cerebral palsy, then not finding any clothing that could work around these challenges, Joanne and Nikki set out to find a solution. They now work each day to fulfill this need, with their company befree Adaptive Clothing, an inclusive clothing line. I can't wait for you to hear their whole story. Mindy Scheier is a fashion designer and a pioneer of the adaptive fashion movement. As the founder of the Runway of Dreams and GAMUT Management, she campaigns to break down stereotypes and make the fashion industry more inclusive. Ever since she designed her first piece of adaptive clothing in 2013, Mindy has been on a mission to highlight the need for mainstream adaptive clothing for people with disabilities. In 2016, Runway of Dreams partnered with Tommy Hilfinger to create Tommy Adaptives, and they have recently announced an exciting new collaboration with Victoria's Secret. In this episode, you'll hear from Mindy Scheier on: (00:04:10) Her aha moment. Mindy recalls the moment when her son Oliver (who has a rare form of muscular dystrophy) told her he wanted to wear jeans rather than sweatpants to school. She describes how his simple request made her realize how important clothing was to his sense of identity and inspired her to address the clothing challenges faced by people with disabilities.(00:45:00) The impact of inclusivity. We talk about the real difference that Runway of Dreams is making in the lives of people with disabilities, and Mindy shares the story of a young model with a prosthetic arm who gained the confidence to wear short-sleeved shirts after taking part in one of its fashion shows. (00:49:26) The adaptive fashion revolution. Mindy praises Victoria's Secret for shifting its focus away from the conventional perception of the ‘perfect' female body and making an effort to serve women with disabilities. As a campaigner, Mindy believes that Runway of Dreams' partnership with Victoria's Secret will be trail-blazing and will help to change the way the world thinks about people with disabilities. (00:51:30) Her commitment to equality in the workplace. Mindy reveals that 80% of people with disabilities are unemployed. So, as the CEO of GAMUT Management, she outlines the measures she takes to make her workplace inclusive and give people with disabilities a voice, a job, and a feeling of being valued.(00:54:24) The importance of dignity and choice. We discuss the role that adaptive clothing can play in restoring dignity to people who have experienced life-changing physical injuries but don't want to change the way they dress.

Most of my golf experience involves neon balls and tiny windmills. But it is a part of many survivors lives. A stroke doesn't have to mean our involvement with sports is over. A few months ago, I talked with US Air Force Academy Tennis Coach Dan Oosterhous about his life and he continues coaching tennis. You can find that episode at http://strokecast.com/dan. This week, we hear from Gianna. And next week in episode 058, We'll hear from Carol-Ann Nelson about Adventure Rehab Vacations. In short, there are lots of reasons and ways for stroke survivors to get out of the house and in to outdoor activities this Spring and Summer More than the athletic aspect of golf, though, is the strong social aspect of the game of golf. It's a sport that's built around chatting with your opponents. It also a sports that has strong cultural and business ties, at least in the US. Folks who don't golf can find themselves shut out of many business socializing and deal making opportunities. That's why getting back out on the course can be so important for a golf-loving stroke survivor. Or even for the survivor just looking for a new hobby. It's got physical, cognitive, social, cultural, and economic advantages. And the work Gianna is doing to get folks access to those advantages is fantastic. Hack of the Week Getting dressed with disabilities can take way too much time. Fortunately, Adaptive Clothing is a thing now. Most folks are already familiar with Velcro shoes. All the shoes I use theses days feature Velcro. You can even find sneakers with faux lace closures now that are powered by Velcro. It goes beyond that, though. A search for adaptive clothing will turn up a significant variety of clothes designed to accommodate a wide assortment of functionality. You don't have to settle for tradition clothing. After a fall left Billy Price paralyzed from the chest down, he lost the ability to move much of his body, including his fingers. Not only did he suddenly face mobility challenges, but daily tasks that he took for granted, such as putting on clothes, became much more difficult. Throughout the years he learned tricks for getting dressed more easily and found a handful of clothing companies that catered to the adaptive community. That said, the one piece of clothing that always eluded him was shoes—he never found a pair of shoes that he felt were both attractive and that he could put on independently. It is clear that the world is ready for greater inclusion in fashion. Everybody is unique and we all want to express ourselves and feel confident. BILLY Footwear is proud to be a part of this movement.  Website: billyfootwear.com ********************************************************************** Shattered Lives on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shatteredlives/ Host Website: http://donnagore.com Follow on Twitter @DonnaRGore Music: http://www.purple-planet.com
