Join us for an unexpected history of the rise of American capitalism—and an argument that entrepreneurial leaders in government, not the “free market,” created the most dynamic economy the world has ever known. Economist and writer Chris Hughes takes us on a journey through the modern history of American capitalism, relating the captivating stories of the most effective “marketcrafters” and the ones who bungled the job. Hughes, author of the new book Marketcrafters, says both Republicans and Democrats have consistently attempted to organize markets for social and political reasons, like avoiding gasoline shortages, reducing inflation, fostering the American aviation and semiconductor industries, fighting climate change, and supporting financial innovation. That flies in the face of the widespread belief among policymakers and business leaders alike that free markets, untouched by the soiled hands of government, bring us prosperity and stability. Hughes says that's wrong. American policy makers, on the right and the left, have spent much of the past century actively shaping our markets for social and political goals. Their work behind the scenes and out of the headlines has served as a kind of “marketcraft,” mirroring the statecraft of international relations. In recent decades, the art of marketcraft has been replaced by the idea that markets work best when they are unfettered and free. Hughes argues that by rediscovering the triumphs and failures of past marketcrafters, we can shape future markets, such as those in artificial intelligence and clean power production, to be innovative, stable and inclusive. Tears for Fears is a duo formed in 1981 in Bath, England by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. They've sold over 30 million albums, starting with their first, The Hurting, which went to number one in the UK. But it was their second album, Songs from the Big Chair, that made them international stars. It came out in 1985, and had huge singles like “Shout” and "Head Over Heels.” But their biggest hit is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” It won Best Single at the BRIT Awards in 1986, and it's been streamed over 2 billion times. So I talked to the two of them about how they, along with their producer Chris Hughes and keyboard player Ian Stanley, made a song that would help define the sound of the 80s.For more, visit songexploder.net/tears-for-fears.

It looks like reality TV is getting very real! After wrapping up her stint on “Celebrity Big Brother UK,” JoJo Siwa's making all kinds of headlines. JoJo - who's been openly gay for a while - had an “aha” moment in front of CBBUK cameras when she realized she now identifies as queer. Great for JoJo. Not so great for JoJo's partner Kath Ebb - who claims JoJo dumped them the night of the CBBUK wrap party! And now there's all kinds of speculation that things are getting hot and heavy between the “Karma” singer and fellow “Big Brother” castmate, Chris Hughes. Next up - what the hell happened during Bill Belichick's “CBS Sunday Morning” interview? We'll get you caught up on that plus what people are saying about his MUCH younger girlfriend? And finally, we've got the latest on Katy Perry. People have been coming down hard on her since her Blue Origin Uber trip to space. And now, for the first time, Katy's opening up about the backlash.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this podcast episode, HVAC professionals Chris Hughes and Adam Mufich discuss the intricate challenges technicians face when commissioning modern inverter-based heating and cooling systems. Unlike traditional single-stage or two-stage HVAC equipment, inverter systems introduce a new level of complexity that can leave even experienced technicians feeling uncertain about proper installation and startup procedures. The presentation highlights a fundamental shift in how HVAC systems operate, moving from straightforward single-stage systems to sophisticated inverter-based technologies that modulate compressor, fan, and refrigerant flow dynamically. This technological evolution creates significant challenges for technicians, who previously could rely on simple, consistent commissioning processes. The speakers emphasize that modern inverter systems require a much more nuanced approach, with specific temperature ranges, wait times, and verification methods that are not always clearly documented in manufacturer manuals. Recognizing the industry-wide need for clarity, Chris and Adam have developed a comprehensive spreadsheet resource that consolidates commissioning information across multiple HVAC brands. Their goal is to empower technicians by providing accessible, standardized guidance for working with these complex systems. By sharing their research and encouraging collaboration, they aim to address what they see as a critical gap in manufacturer support and technical documentation. The podcast serves as both an educational resource and a call to action for HVAC professionals and manufacturers alike. Chris and Adam argue that the industry needs more transparency, better documentation, and a collective effort to standardize inverter system commissioning practices. Their work represents a significant step towards demystifying these advanced HVAC technologies and ensuring that technicians can confidently and effectively install and service modern heating and cooling equipment. Key Topics Covered: Differences between single-stage, two-stage, and inverter HVAC systems Commissioning challenges with modern inverter technologies Critical factors in proper system startup, including: Outdoor and indoor temperature requirements Wait times for system stabilization Refrigerant charging methods Airflow measurement and verification The importance of precise refrigerant charging (superheat and subcooling) Challenges with manufacturer documentation and technical support The need for standardized commissioning procedures across HVAC brands Strategies for verifying system performance during commissioning The speakers' collaborative effort to create a comprehensive inverter system commissioning guide Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? For the final episode of our Sake 101 mini-series we dive into the 2,000 years of history of sake. Cindy Bissig and Chris Hughes explore the evolution of sake, not just as a beverage, but as a key part of Japanese culture. This is the perfect way to wrap up the season with a look at how sake became what it is today. Sake is deeply woven into Japan's history, and sake history is really Japanese history. It is hard to pack centuries of events into a 30 minute episode, so this episode is a distilled version of the history of sake. We'll be making deep dives into the history of sake later this year. This episode is intended to be a great starting point for sake beginners and an insightful listen for those who already know a thing or two. We hope you have enjoyed our Sake 101 series, and that you will stick around for more Sake on Air! If this is your first time tuning in, don't forget to check out our previous episodes covering more sake basics like temperature, tasting tips, and food pairings! In other news, we have a newsletter! As our Sake 101 miniseries continues, we're diving into one of the most debated topics in the world of sake: hot vs. cold sake! Beyond just personal preference, the temperature at which sake is served can completely transform its flavor, aroma, and overall experience. But with so much conflicting information out there, it's easy to get confused and then there is the old myth that only bad sake is served hot—is there any truth to that? Join our hosts for this episode Cindy Bissig and Chris Hughes as they break it all down, exploring why some sakes are meant to be served warm while others are best enjoyed chilled. So whether you're a fan of warm sake on a chilly evening or love sipping a crisp, cold glass in the summer, understanding the role of temperature can take your sake appreciation to the next level. If you have a favorite way to enjoy warm or cold sake, we'd love to hear about it and if you have questions or comments share them with us at questions@sakeonair.com or head over to our Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook we would love to hear from you!
