“Every day you get better or you get worse.  You never stay the same!”  Those words from legendary football coach Bo Schembechler had a profound impact on Jim Czirr in the summer of 1972.  It was his first football practice at the University of Michigan and he decided that he was going to get better every day.   At the conclusion of his senior season, he was the only unanimous selection to the Big Ten All Conference team.  Jim was drafted by the Denver Broncos but decided not to play professional football when a physical revealed he had a serious problem with a vertebra in his back. The same tenacity and will to win that helped him succeed in football, however, translated into the business world.  He excelled in finance and business development.  Jim co-founded companies in the fields of therapeutics, Bio Tech and others.  Recently, his love for America has led him to the “Sign 1776 Project.”  This movement is calling our country's leaders to uphold the principles found in The Declaration of Independence.Through it all, Jim's Christian faith has guided and sustained him.  In this podcast, he shares with you the most important lessons he learned on his journey to Finish Strong!Support the showFearless Faith Websiteffaith.orgTo leave a review - Open Finish Strong on the Apple Podcast app and scroll down until you see "Ratings & Reviews". Kevin Constantine joins the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast! But before we get to Kevin Constantine (33:57), Sheng and Keegan discuss the latest additions to the San Jose Sharks staff like Ryan Miller and Thomas Vanek (1:10), and what the Miller hiring signals about the Sharks' continued investment in player development (8:20). They also reflect on former Sharks' first-round pick Ryan Merkley signing in the KHL (14:45). Sheng shares an NHL scout's thoughts on new Sharks players Mikael Granlund (23:12), Mike Hoffman (27:42), and Jan Rutta (30:32). Now, Kevin Constantine (33:57)! Constantine recalled coaching influences as diverse as Phil Jackson, Bill Walsh, Bo Schembechler, and John Wooden (36:40). What was Constantine's hockey take on Wooden's Pyramid of Success? He coached the Kalamazoo Wings when they were a Minnesota North Stars affiliate, before the North Stars split up to help form the expansion Sharks (45:15). So Constantine coached the legendary Link Gaetz, and tells the story of when Gaetz beat up his own goalie. Constantine took over behind the San Jose Sharks bench in the third year of the franchise, after they had only won 28 games in their first two seasons in the league. How did he add belief and discipline to a 1993-94 group that would go on a surprise playoff run, upsetting the top-seeded Detroit Red Wings in the first round (49:35)?  That season, Constantine made the unusual coaching decision to allow five players a lot more latitude offensively than the rest of the team. Those five, Igor Larionov, Sergei Makarov, Johan Garpenlov, Sandis Ozolinsh, and Jeff Norton, were the precursor to Detroit's Russian Five, and would help propel the Sharks to success. What was behind Constantine loosening the reins on Larionov and company (53:52)? And how are Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan's recent comments about integrating Erik Karlsson related (57:53)? Constantine shares why he wasn't happy about the city of San Jose throwing the Sharks a parade after their second-round loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs (1:04:00). Constantine says he was in “Dumb and Dumber” and talks about how that movie and Jamie Baker helped inspire the '94 Sharks (1:07:20). Constantine reveals Tom Pederson's girlfriend as the culprit behind leaking the Red Wings' playoff plans to the Sharks (1:10:35). He also recounts going with backup Wade Flaherty over Arturs Irbe in the 1995 playoffs, which helped propel the San Jose Sharks to another first-round upset, this time against the Calgary Flames (1:17:25). Constantine opens up about getting fired by the San Jose Sharks early in the 1995-96 season (1:20:02). He was 37 then, and up to that point, a bit of a coaching wunderkind, so he took it hard. Though he was a young head coach, Constantine says that he was a yeller who learned to relate to players a lot better as he got older, in the second half of his career (1:23:35). After head coaching stints with Jaromir Jagr's Penguins and Martin Brodeur's New Jersey Devils, Constantine continued coaching in the NAHL, WHL, and AHL. In 2010, he got offered a coaching position in France, and was advised by multiple hockey people to not take that job. But he did, why (1:35:25)? This started an international coaching odyssey that's taken him also to professional leagues in Switzerland, Korea, Poland, and Hungary. He reflects on those experiences. Constantine closes with a couple hilarious Jagr stories (1:42:08). Finally, we wrap up with Constantine's thoughts about taking over new WHL side, the Wenatchee Wild (1:51:38).Listen to the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast — it's a new link — on Apple Podcasts and Spotify and Google Podcasts.Subscribe to the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast YouTube channel, we're trying to get over 1K subscribers! ★ Support this podcast ★

NCAAFB – Schembechler son resigns at Michigan after offensive social media content A son of longtime Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler has resigned from his position with the Wolverines, with the school saying it was aware of his social media activity that may have caused “pain” in the community. Glenn “Shemy” Schembechler stepped down Saturday, just days after he had been hired as assistant director of recruiting on Jim Harbaugh’s staff. The Detroit News reported that Schembechler’s Twitter feed contained posts and likes of offensive material, including some that suggested slavery and Jim Crow were positives to strengthen Black individuals and families. Schembechler played for his father, who coached Michigan from 1969-89. In a statement Sunday night, he said he had “inexplicably and irresponsibly” liked items on social media and asked for forgiveness. Indy 500 – Palou’s record run earns Ganassi third straight Indy 500 pole Alex Palou will lead the field to green in the Indianapolis 500 after the young Spaniard put together the fastest four-lap pole run in history Sunday. He edged Rinus VeeKay and Felix Rosenqvist and gave Chip Ganassi Racing its third pole in a row. Palou whipped four laps around the historic 2.5-mile speedway at an average of 234.217 mph. That was a mere 0.007 mph faster than VeeKay, who still gave Ed Carpenter Racing a front-row starting spot for the ninth time in the last 11 years. Palou surpassed the record pole run of 234.046 mph that Ganassi teammate Scott Dixon put up last year. It also was the second-fastest qualifying effort, trailing only Arie Luyendyk’s 236.986, which he set the day after pole qualifying in 1996. NASCAR – Larson dominates for third NASCAR All-Star race win, takes home $1 million Kyle Larson turned in a dominating effort to win his third All-Star race and earn $1 million in the Cup Series’ return to North Wilkesboro Speedway following a 27-year absence. Larson became only the fourth driver to win the All-Star race at least three times. Jimmie Johnson has the most with four victories, while Larson, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt have three. Larson is the first to win the All-Star race at three different tracks. He has won in Charlotte in 2019 and Texas in 2021. Bubba Wallace finished second in the 200-lap non-points exhibition race, followed by Tyler Reddick, Chase Briscoe and Chase Elliott. Michigan basketball took another hit, this time a big one, as incoming transfer Caleb Love has decided not to come to Ann Arbor. Whether it's because of academics, admissions or because Love simply doesn't want to play for Juwan Howard doesn't really matter. What matters, is that he's not going to wear the maize and blue and the roster without him is quite unimpressive. Now, Howard has a small handful of scholarships to use before the upcoming season. On the gridiron, Jim Harbaugh's program is humming along like a well-oiled machine. He has the No. 1 recruiting class in the entire country for the 2024 cycle, he just added Bo Schembechler's son to his staff (do with that what you want) and he's got one of the most complete and loaded rosters in the entire country.

Most people know Jack Harbaugh as the father of John, the Super Bowl champion coach of the NFL's Baltimore Ravens, and Jim, who has led the Michigan Wolverines to two straight Big Ten titles. But Jack took the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers from the verge of extinction to a national title himself, one of the great coaching feats of his era.In this episode Jack tells us what he learned-from paying his dues while climbing up the ranks of high school coaching – including one of his schools that had exactly two practice footballs;-from Hall of Fame coaches Doyt Perry at Bowling Green, and Bo Schembechler at Michigan;-from being fired from his first head coaching job at Western Michigan;-from his tenure taking over a near-defunct program at Western Kentucky, getting them into the playoffs as a 16th seed, then leading the Hilltoppers to a very unlikely national title.Along the way, Jack Harbaugh tells insightful and hilarious stories, many at his own expense, that you won't forget. About our Host:For info about the book or this podcast please visit our website:http://www.letthemleadbybacon.comhttp://www.johnubacon.comYou can connect with John via these platforms:https://www.facebook.com/johnubaconhttps://twitter.com/Johnubacon

The Game: Michigan/Ohio State and Why Rivalries Matter

Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where it's out with 2022 and in with 2023 and our season eight premier. Rivalries in both sports and politics will be the focus of our next six months, and where better than to start but with college football's premier conflict between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines. With beginnings dating back to the virtually bloodless Toledo War, a territorially dispute in 1836-37, the football hostilities would begin at centuries end. Tune in this week, as we outline the narrative history of this uniquely competitive and impactful rivalry. From Michigan's dominant early run, the arrival of coach Woody Hayes and the famous Ten Year War of 1969-78 featuring Hayes and then Michigan coach Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines turning the tide back under Lloyd Carr leading to an era of unprecedented Buckeye dominance in the 21st century with Jim Tressel and Urban Mayer, all the way to the present: with both teams featured in this week's College Football Playoff and Michigan capturing consecutive victories for the first time in over twenty years under alum and prodigal son Jim Harbaugh. Michigan/Ohio State has long been one of the sport's consequential regular season showdown and continues to frame the narrative of the national college football landscape. It may be a new year, a new Collective season, but Ohio State/Michigan remains the same: arguably the greatest rivalry in all of sports.

December 19th Show Notes December 19, 1934 – The New York Yankees send five players to the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League as partial compensation for the acquisition of Joe DiMaggio. The Yankees had previously paid $25,000 for the future Hall of Famer. DiMaggio will play one more season in the PCL before reporting to the Yankees in 1936. In ‘36, DiMaggio will hit .323 with 125 RBIs in helping the Yankees to a World Series title. December 19, 1976 — A single-engine Piper Cherokee plane crashes into the upper deck of Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, home of the Orioles, injuring the pilot and three others. Minutes prior to the mishap, the plane had buzzed the stadium during the final moments of the Steelers' playoff victory over the Colts.   The pilot of the Piper Cherokee was 33-year-old Donald Kroner. Kroner served three months of a two-year sentence for malicious destruction of property and violation of aviation ordinances. Kroner had been arrested prior to the Stadium incident for making threats against former Colt Bill Pellington. This included Kroner being accused of dropping a bottle and toilet paper from his plane onto the roof of Pellington's Timonium restaurant. According to news reports, Kroner was upset over being thrown out of the restaurant. Kroner died in 2013. Kroner had been fired as an MTA bus driver the day before the crash. He also had been a flight instructor and, according to some accounts, had worked as an air traffic controller. In 1980, Kroner was charged with stealing a Greyhound bus from Dulles International Airport. December 19, 1990 — At a press conference, Tiger management and WJR announce 1991 will be Ernie Harwell's 32nd and final season in the broadcast booth. The dismissal of the Motor City's popular play-by-play announcer starts a furor among fans, which includes a threatened boycott of Domino's Pizza, a business of club owner Tom Monaghan, and the rise of the slogan, “Say It Ain't So, Bo”, which appears on bumper stickers and T-shirts all over Detroit, referring to Bo Schembechler, the team president and former University of Michigan football coach. "[Harwell's situation is] not going to change no matter how much clamor is made over it," said team president Bo Schembechler. The situation caused outrage so much that some made threats of violence against Schembechler. Some, such as Mitch Albom, blamed the situation causing as much negative feeling as it did on WJR executive Jim Long who was the one who pushed the quick, no severance pay removal of Harwell.[6] The movement in favor of keeping Harwell was so strong that even billboards in favor of his remaining were put up.[7] Rick Rizzs was hired away from the Seattle Mariners to replace Harwell in 1992, teaming with Bob Rathbun. Harwell worked a part-time schedule for the California Angels in 1992. The following year, the Tigers were purchased by Mike Ilitch, who made it one of his first priorities to bring Harwell back. In 1993, Harwell teamed with Rizzs and Rathbun on the WJR broadcasts, calling play-by-play of the middle innings in each game. From 1994 to 1998, Harwell called television broadcasts for the Tigers on PASS Sports and later WKBD-TV. In 1999, he resumed full-time radio duties with the team, swapping roles with Frank Beckmann (who had replaced Rizzs in the radio booth following the 1994 season), teaming with analyst Jim Price, and continuing in that role even as the team's radio rights changed from WJR to WXYT in 2001. During spring training in 2002, Harwell announced that he would retire at the end of the season; his final broadcast came on September 29, 2002. Dan Dickerson, who had joined Harwell and Price in 2000, took over as the Tigers' lead radio voice. Died: December 19, 2008 in Los Angeles, CA Dock Ellis, a solid pitcher for the Bucs, is best known for his performance on June 12, 1970, when he would forever etch his name in major league baseball history. That night Dock, despite the fact he walked eight batters, no-hit the San Diego Padres 2-0 on the strength of two Willie Stargell home runs. Also that night, which he admitted later on, was the fact that Ellis pitched his gem while on LSD. Welcome to the wild and bizarre world of Dock Ellis. He had a 14-3 record at the 1971 All-Star break, but famously said baseball wouldn't let two soul brothers – he and Vida Blue – start the AS game. Ellis ended up surrendering Reggie Jackson's titanic blast at Tiger Stadium. He was also the starter when the Pirates become the first team to start 9 black players. Ellis, never one to avoid controversy, also hit the first three Reds on May 1, 1974 because he felt his team was lackluster. Ellis will eventually end up a Yankee in ‘76 and win comeback player of year after winning 17 games. Doc Finished up with 138 wins vs. 119 loses and a 3.46 ERA. In 1955, he broke Ty Cobb's record to become the youngest player to win a batting title. Al Kaline was one day younger in 1955 than Cobb had been in 1907, when “The Georgia Peach” won his first title. Despite a history of injuries, he tied Tris Speaker's record of 100+ games in the outfield for 19+ seasons. A future Hall of Famer, Kaline was born on December 19, 1934, in Baltimore, Maryland. In his 22-year career (1953-1974), the outstanding right fielder had 3007 hits, 399 HR, 1582 RBI, 1622 runs, .297 BA, .376 OBP, .480 Slg., & .855 OPS. In the 1968 World Series, Kaline batted .379 with 11 hits, which included two home runs.   Playing his entire career with the Detroit Tigers, his nickname was Mr. Tiger. He was an All-Star in 15 seasons, won 10 Gold Glove Awards, won a batting title in 1955, and was a member of the 1968 World Series champions. His uniform #6 is retired by the Tigers. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1980 (88.3% on the 1st ballot).

“One of the things I emphasize to my staff is that I want you to tell me when you think I'm wrong. I want you to tell me when you think we should do something else.” Warde Manuel  Denise talks to Warde Manuel, Director of Athletics for the University of Michigan since 2016. Manuel has won too many awards to list, but of all his accomplishments he's most proud that the student athletes under his leadership excel academically and on the fields of play. Rather than take credit for all his accolades, including six NCAA national championships during his three-year tenure at University of Connecticut, Manuel recognizes those around him have helped determine his success.  Manuel puts the students first. For that reason, the most difficult situation he's had to face in his entire career, was the death of a student by suicide. When students are away from their families, Manuel says, “We are the caretakers.” Facing the fact that he couldn't help with counseling or coaching is heart-breaking for him. It's this aspect of his character that drives him to connect with students to ensure they know how much he cares. “Nothing,” he says, “is more important than a person's life.”  Manuel sites four key secrets to confidence: (1) Preparation, (2) A great support system, starting with his wife, (3) A great staff at work, and (4) Humility. As a leader he's been able to skillfully navigate what is a highly emotional field—sports. When the scoreboard doesn't come out in your team's favor, Manuel says a lot of people will want to tell you what to do, so you need the confidence to believe you know the best way forward.  Stay tuned to learn what Manuel would say to his younger self—and his only regret in a career that he finds joy in each day.  Being from New Orleans, it's not surprising that Manuel loves southern soul food. However, he reveals an unusual fact about a career he chose NOT to pursue, which would have changed the course of his life forever.  Aside from winning moments in Detroit's storied sports history, Manuel's favorite thing about the city are the people. “The people of Detroit are amazing,” the city's biggest asset.  ***  Warde Manuel is University of Michigan's Donald Shepherd Director of Athletics since 2016, overseeing 31 teams, more than 950 student athletes, a staff of 400 and a budget of $197 million. Prior to coming to Michigan, Manuel was the Director of Athletics at University of Connecticut. Manuel was a two-sport athlete, playing football under Bo Schembechler at University of Michigan where he earned a BA as well as his MA and MBA. Manuel has served on several national and athletic conference committees and boards and has won numerous awards. A native of New Orleans, he and his wife Chrislan have two children, Emma and Evan.    Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years.  As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world.  Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents.    FOLLOW DENISE @thedeniseilitchshow    TO LEARN MORE about all our inspiring podcasts visit https://www.lifestough.com/.

Cleveland starter Aaron Civale struggled. With two on and two outs in the ninth and ace Gerrit Cole warming up in case, Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres stepped on the bag to end it, then mimicked rocking a baby with the ball — a jab at Guardians slugger Josh Naylor, who made the motion rounding the bases after a homer off Cole in Game 4. The Warriors, long committed to social issues far beyond basketball, celebrated their fourth championship in eight years. Griner is awaiting a hearing in Russia later this month for her appeal of a nine-year prison sentence for drug possession. NFL – Colts owner Irsay says there’s "merit to remove" Snyder Colts owner Jim Irsay says there’s “merit to remove” Dan Snyder as owner of the Washington Commanders. Irsay is the first NFL owner to publicly state that his controversial counterpart should go. Snyder’s status has been widely debated for years amid several scandals and investigations into workplace conduct in Washington. The league has been investigating allegations of sexual misconduct and financial impropriety, a probe conducted by attorney Mary Jo White that is ongoing. Removing Snyder would requires 24 votes from the other owners. NFL – NFL says it’s not backing down on protecting quarterbacks The NFL isn’t backing down on protecting quarterbacks. League executive Troy Vincent said there was a healthy and spirited conversation with owners about roughing-the-passer penalties at the league’s fall meeting. A pair of disputed roughing penalties in Week 5 frustrated defensive players and had players, coaches and fans questioning what constitutes a legal hit. NFL competition committee chairman Rich McKay said the conversation on making roughing-the-passer calls reviewable lasted about 30 seconds and needs more discussion. NFL – Prime Video will add Black Friday game to NFL package in ’23 The NFL has announced that Amazon Prime Video will stream a game on Black Friday beginning next season. The game will take place on Nov. 24, 2023, and will kick off at 3 p.m. ET. The teams will be announced in early May when the regular-season schedule is expected to be released. Prime Video is in its first season as the exclusive carrier of “Thursday Night Football” and will expand to 16 games next season. The package goes through the 2033 season. NFL – Bears waive backup receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette The Chicago Bears have waived receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette. Smith-Marsette got his first significant playing time in the offense in Chicago’s 29-22 loss at Minnesota two weeks ago and committed two costly mistakes. He had the ball taken away from behind by Cameron Dantzler at the Vikings 39 following a reception on the Bears’ final drive to decide the game. He also got flagged for an illegal block from behind on a 52-yard scramble by quarterback Justin Fields, negating a TD.   NHL – Bettman: NHL salary cap may get nice bump for ’23-24 season The NHL salary cap could be going up more than expected sooner than expected. Commissioner Gary Bettman says there’s a chance players could be finished paying off what they owe owners from pandemic revenue losses as soon as this season. That would mean the cap going up $4 million or more next summer after being mostly flat for several years. Bettman expects the players’ debt to certainly be paid off next season, allowing for a significant cap increase going into 2023-24. The cap has only gone up $1 million to $82.5 million since the pandemic began.  NHL – NHL, its workforce 84% white, sets baseline to up diversity The NHL for the first time has done an internal demographic study of its staff and all 32 teams. The results suggest hockey has a lot of work to do to increase diversity. It found that 83.6% of the NHL’s workforce is white and that men make up nearly 62% of the total. That mirrors the situation on the ice. More than 90% of players and nearly all coaches and officials are white. NHL executive Kim Davis called the study a good start and a baseline from which the league can improve. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Ohio State, Michigan making Big Ten look like Big Two Ohio State and Michigan are making the Big Ten look like the Big Two, rekindling memories or some of Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler turning the chase for a conference championship into a two-team race. The second-ranked Buckeyes and fourth-ranked Wolverines are the Big Ten’s only undefeated teams. No other team in the conference is ranked among the top 15. Penn State can potentially be a factor in the because it hosts Ohio State on Oct. 29. The 16th-ranked Nittany Lions will have to play much better than they did while getting pummeled at Michigan. NCAAWBKB – South Carolina women unanimous No. 1 in preseason AP Top 25 South Carolina is the unanimous No. 1 team in the preseason AP Top 25 women’s basketball poll. The defending national champions went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team last year and have been the top team for 20 straight weeks. Stanford, Texas, Iowa and Tennessee round out the top five. UConn is sixth, the first time since 2006 that the Huskies aren’t in the first five in the preseason poll. Louisville, Iowa State, Notre Dame and N.C. State is the rest of the top 10. NASCAR – NASCAR suspends Bubba Wallace 1 race for Las Vegas crash NASCAR has suspended driver Bubba Wallace for one race following his fracas at Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend. NASCAR determined that Wallace deliberately spun reigning champion Kyle Larson in a dangerous move of retaliation. Wallace will miss Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Golf – PGA – Elevated events show a divide among PGA Tour events for ’23 A person with direct knowledge of the plans says the PGA Tour is announcing that four tournaments will have elevated status and $20 million purses next year. The four additions are the WM Phoenix Open, the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head, the Wells Fargo Championship and the Travelers Championship. That leads to an incredibly crowded schedule. Texas-born Jordan Spieth figures to play five straight weeks in May and seven out of eight weeks. And that includes two majors. Two of the events are the week after a major. Not since Tiger Woods in 2006 has someone won a tournament the week after winning a major. The 2022 NFL Draft is upon us, so the last episode of season 4 of Conversations with features a chat with former Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand. Since the Lions have always been a story on draft day because of their success, or a=lack thereof, I thought Tom would be a perfect finish to this season. Lewand took over the Lions presidency after the Matt Millen era. He and GM Martin Mayhew tried to put the pieces together after that period. It wasn't as successful as Tom wanted, and while he was relieved of his duties, his story is still a remarkable rise from a student manager on the University of Michigan Football teams of Bo Schembechler, to a CEO and President of an NFL franchise and beyond that, a CEO for major corporations.
