"Podcasting is still a white man's game." When you look at the top podcasts on the charts, only 1/3 are hosted by women, and just over 10% have non-white hosts. That's why I invited Jess Kupferman, Co-Founder of She Podcasts, an online and offline community for women podcasters with over 15,000 members strong, to come on the show. In this episode, we're chatting about everything from planning events to accommodate ALL women (introverts, you're going to love this!), the depressing statistics about women in podcasting, and how companies and individuals can do better to further diversity in the field. We're also diving into some uncomfortable topics - when it feels hard to talk about race, the risk of white centering, how to use our own fear to take bold action and whether or not we're sabotaging our own success. This is a deep and important episode with a WHOLE lot of wit and silliness, all rolled into one, and we would expect nothing less from the extraordinaire Jess Kupferman!
Ladies, it's time to take back the power tie. On this episode, Meg's sitting down with Cara and Lisa, the powerful duo behind Andie and Erin, pussybow neckties inspired by influential women from history and today. We're diving into how Andie and Erin came to be, the power of the female necktie, and how we can all celebrate the stories of incredible women. We'll also chat about sharting a business when you're still in your full-time job, running a Kickstarter campaign to test out your concept and why it's important to always be prepared to pivot. Lastly, we'll talk about dreaming big, and the ladies will share with you what happened when they sent a necktie to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the Supreme Court!
There's something really powerful when women support other women. That was Meg's takeaway after attending She Podcasts LIVE, the first annual conference created solely for women podcasters. In this episode, Meg is broadcasting direct from the BuzzSprout recording booth and she's joined by a few special guests. These ladies are chatting about it all - from male-dominated industries to the importance of women speaking out. And we'll cap off this episode with a few actionable takeaways on how you can support women through small gestures.
On this episode of One For Womenkind, we're joined by the fabulous Kristin Van Busum, Founder & CEO of Project Alianza and Co-Founder of Women Speaks. Kristin is truly a champion of women - founding her non-profit to raise awareness of the inequalities women in coffee trades face and using her privilege to connect the broader global community.
"I wanted to create a sea of pink." That was the goal of craftivist Krista Suh, creator of the Pussyhat. Join us for this intimate conversation on the herstory of the Pussyhat, how she tackled her goal to make 1.17 million hats in two months, and how and when she knew it was going to be a REALLY BIG DEAL. Krista walks us through how to break big goals down into small ones to get sh*t done (but also the power of big goals in starting movements), how to handle criticism when your family doesn't like your big idea and how to decide when your idea is worth pursuing.
On this episode of One For Womenkind, we're sitting down with the fabulous ladies from The She League, Megan and Hilary, for some serious girl talk. We cover everything from Christina vs Britney and the Backstreet Boys (and even Hanson!), to how to work through difficult stuff (2016 election much?) and stay grounded, to how to deal with the overwhelming amount of information in the world today. But the common theme through all of our ramblings? The power of connecting women and implementing practices of radical self-care. This is a must hear, so tune in!
Do you have grit? In today's episode, we're breaking down the concept of grit - what it is, how to get it and why it's so important for women to have. We'll share our own grit story and walk you through 7 steps to become gritty, so that you can wake up every day feeling more empowered and more capable of handling whatever comes your way.
We're kicking off Season 2 with this AMAZING female Founder and overall badass, Renee Powers. Renee is the Founder of Feminist Book Club and is an outspoken advocate for intersectional feminism. In this episode, we'll dive into Renee's definition of feminism (compassion, equality, justice, and liberation), why it's so important to have true self-care in our fight for justice and equality (and no, we're not talking about bubble baths...) and why compassion is really at the heart of changing minds and changing society. We'll wrap it up with some tough love on handling uncomfortable topics and how to combat the hate and vitriol that is being spewed all over the internet and sometimes even in our own family gatherings.
Despite their incredible successes, women athletes are still not paid the same as the men. In this episode of One For Womenkind, I'm sitting down with my friend Matt (the first guy on the show ever!), an avid sports guy, to dive into why this is the case and what we can do about it. Spoiler alert: We don't agree on much. There are some tough parts of this conversation, but it's an important one to have if we're going to get women the equal playing field they deserve.
We're taking a break from our normal Summer School series this week for a solo soapbox episode on the immigration crisis here in the U.S. In this episode, we're talking about what the border crisis is, why you should care regardless of your political party affiliation, and how what's happening at the border is one of the biggest threats against womankind we're facing today.
The world is a different place now from when our mothers were raising us, and there are a few things we wished they had told us to prepare for it all. On this episode of Summer School, my dear friend Lyn and I are chatting about all of those things - including how girls are taught survival and guys are taught game theory, how to actually ask for a raise and why you should in EVERY job you're in, and why it's so freakin' critical to go after those jobs you think you're underqualified for (spoiler alert: you're not).
Who run the world? Girls! But also who run the household? Girls again... Despite making advances in equality in the workplace and in leadership roles, women are still bearing the burden of running the household. Even when men are doing 50% of the labor, the burden of overseeing everything falls on our shoulders. We're stuck as the CEOs, the Project Managers, the "naggin" you-know-whats who have to delegate everything. On this episode of One For Womenkind, my dear friend Vinita and I chat about the challenges of keeping it equal at home and some actionable tips for you to implement today.
One For Womenkind Summer School is all about digging into deep women's issues with my best girlfriends, and this episode nails it. Pendery and I are chatting about BIG topics - everything from women being called "hysterical" to supporting entrepreneurial friends (when you've been burned yourself) to navigating life when you don't know what your big dream is. Plus, we threw in a fire alarm for fun. This is an episode you WON'T want to miss.
In this episode of Summer School, my new friend Amy and I dive into a BIG topic - do we, as Sheryl Sandberg so aptly puts it, "lean in" or does this advice just not work and instead we should "lean out?" We're diving deep into this question and other hot topics, including how we can use our white privilege to effect change, why it's not about men vs. women but about those with power vs. those without, and why the Women's Movement is just like a game of Red Rover - the stronger we are together, the harder it will be to stop our force.
On this episode of One For Womenkind Summer School, I’m sitting down with my dear friend Annie, badass lawyer and girl boss extraordinaire, to talk all about peer mentoring. As women with big dreams, we need some seriously awesome support systems around us and peer mentoring is where it’s at. We’re diving into the deep end with this topic – everything from compassionate honesty to finding mentors in male-dominated fields, and even why it’s critical we share the “bad” stuff as much as the good stuff. Plus, we get into why it’s so damn important to diversify your support system, and why some of the best education you can get will come from media sources highlighting voices that are different than yours.
My dear friend Megan came prepared for this episode, and she had one very BIG topic on her mind - menopause. That's right, the big "m," that thing we all dread as women because it means we're entering a new phase of life. In this episode of One For Womenkind's Summer School, Megan and I are diving in and talking all about the things no one else ever told us. We're demystifying menopause and all of those other "lady topics" and giving it to you real. You won't want to miss this!
In this episode of One For Womenkind’s Summer School series, I’m sitting down with my dear friend Anna. In this Summer School episode, we’re choosing from the grab bag, which means neither Anna nor I know what we’re going to talk about! As it turns out, our prompt dove deep into a serious topic – can men be mentors in the age of #metoo? In this candid conversation, we’re bearing it all – the struggles we face in male-dominated industries, how sometimes other women are the worst of the bunch, and why compliments are so important. Tune in for this super candid, completely unedited episode – it goes great with wine!
In this episode of One For Womenkind's Summer School series, I'm sitting down with my dear friend Emily. Unlike our other Summer School episodes, Emily brought her own topic and it's all about the single ladies today. In this candid conversation, we're chatting about the ridiculous pressure put on women to check those boxes of marriage and children, why our family and friends look at us single gals like we're lepers and how to convince everyone, once and for all, that it's not just OK to be single, it's amazing.
Instead of taking a summer hiatus, One For Womenkind is hosting Summer School. In these weekly conversations, hostess Meg Wheeler sits down, in person, with her very best girlfriends as they dish about the hottest topics keeping women up at night. In these completely unscripted and unedited episodes, conversations get real and the wine flows deep. So if you're itching for some girl talk, grab a glass and dive in!
In today’s world, especially recently, women’s rights and freedoms are being challenged. Amid the injustices occurring, it is vital that all of us should be standing up and speaking out. In today’s episode, I get in-depth on the current state of women’s rights with Lisa Merlo-Booth. Lisa works closely with couples and individual women on their relationships to shine a light on the messages of misogyny, inequality, and violence that many people are raised on. She firmly believes in standing up for your worth with a grounded powerful strength. We talk about how we can take actionable steps to make a difference and how it is so important to hold ourselves accountable for our own actions. We discuss other actions that can block our power and how to use that power from within to stand up for what we believe in. Diving into these difficult topics is never easy, but it is my hope that you can find the strength to rise up after hearing our conversation. Being a new mom can come with a gamut of emotions including isolation, fear, and loneliness. It is so essential to have support and community as a new and even a seasoned mom. In this episode I chat with Liz Libby of Rising Tide Women, a doula and lactation consultant whose passion is focusing on evidence-based, non-judgemental education and support for moms! We talk all about how you can support friends and even strangers so they don’t feel so alone on this journey, and how it can be deceiving when we as moms look normal before we feel normal postpartum. We also discuss the importance of normalizing the not so nice parts of parenting and the huge cognitive shift and adjustments women have to make after children. I hope this episode gives you some tangible ideas and actions you can take to support women who are going through this season of their lives, or maybe our conversation will allow you to feel less isolated in your journey. Have you ever heard of community over competition? It can be so easy as women to compare ourselves to the people around us. Are they doing the same thing as me? Are they doing it better? In this episode, I talk with Ashley Mason. She is a 22 year old marketing consultant who prides herself in helping female entrepreneurs create and execute social media strategies, grow their blogs, learn about SEO, and essentially cover all the things that are important to running a successful business. One of the reasons why we love her is because she is all about building positive relationships with other women and teaching others the benefits of networking. Ashley believes that when you help people share their stories and create brand awareness as she does, you are in turn growing your own business. We talk about how it is so important to own your worth as a woman business owner and how supporting other women in the business community does not have to come with sacrificing your own needs. As we wrap up our 30 Days of Kindness Challenge, it was only fitting to have an episode not only reflecting on the past month, but on the importance of realizing how powerful your voice really is. Many of you probably realized how one small gesture during these last 30 days really made an impact on someone and their lives. The same applies for when we use our outer voice and inner strength to stand up for what we believe in, even during tough times. That one voice can make such an incredible difference. In this episode, we talk all about the current state of our world and how women’s voices are being heard now more than ever. It is during these controversial times that it is most important to not give up and instead to keep amplifying our voices. We talk about imposter syndrome and how we can become afraid of not having enough knowledge to speak our truths. Even if just one person is watching and listening to you, you can make an impact. I share stories and give tangible tips for how to speak up more and get over those roadblocks that are holding you back. It is my hope that this episode gives you the confidence you need to speak up and recognize that your opinions in the world are more valuable than you believe. It is a way to come together to share in each other’s company and remind each other exactly how much you are valued. In this episode, I share all about how I host my own gratitude dinners and how you can do it yourself. Whether you gather a large group of friends for a dinner, or have coffee with a friend or two, what matters is that you do it. Gratitude dinners can be so important. You don’t need a reason to get together other than to remind yourselves just how much you mean to each other. Sometimes we all need a reminder that being kind is free. That’s why we’ve decided to implement The 30 Days of Kindness Challenge here at One for Womenkind. In this episode, I talk about 30 ways we can easily be kind to each other. Some ways are more involved than others, but most are small gestures that we can show in our day to day lives. We are challenging you to do one kind gesture a day, one a week, or just one for the whole 30 days. We can all take a little more time out to be intentional and choose to be kind. I will talk about simple examples such as holding the door for someone or smiling at a stranger, to examples that will take a little more effort on your part--such as, introducing someone new into your circle. Being kind is a choice that sometimes we take for granted. It is my hope that this episode inspires you to take some action and show kindness throughout these next 30 days. We would love for you to post about your act or acts of kindness on Instagram and tag us! Use the hashtag #30daysofkindness and explain how you decided to be kind! Each time you post about each of your kind gestures, you will be entered to win in our 30 Days of Kindness Challenge Contest. Go out there and spread kindness over the next 30 days! In this bonus episode, we're talking about the recent failure of 60 Minutes to properly represent women in a special they did on girls in tech. Instead of highlighting girl-focused organizations such as Girls Who Code, they chose to highlight a male-run organization Code.org, and omit the expertise and experience of the numerous women-led organizations working for significant change. In response, Founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, Reshma Saujani, wrote a powerful piece on Medium calling out 60 Minutes for failing to properly represent women and girls in their segment (on the eve of Women's History Month no less!).
