From the massive gender gaps in clinical research to the misunderstood role of hormonal rhythms, this talk challenges nearly every conventional health assumption about women's physiology. You'll learn how the female biological rhythm affects everything from metabolism to cognition—and why the missing link in women's health isn't just about hormones, but about data, design, and decades of neglect. 5 KEY TAKEAWAYS • The Research Gap Is Real—and Deep Women were banned from clinical research until 1993, and even today remain underrepresented, especially in areas like drug trials, cardiovascular studies, and brain health. • Bikini Medicine Isn't Enough Most “women's health” research still focuses narrowly on reproductive organs, ignoring how sex hormones impact the brain, immune system, metabolism, and more. • The Female Biological Rhythm Is NOT 24 Hours Unlike men, women operate on a ~28-day hormonal rhythm—shifting cognition, metabolism, stress response, and energy throughout four distinct phases. • Health Advice That Ignores Hormones Can Be Harmful Popular trends like intermittent fasting or high-intensity training may work well for men but can backfire for women if not timed to their hormonal cycle. • Personalized, Phase-Based Health Is the Future Tracking one's own biological rhythm and learning phase-specific strategies for supplements, sleep, nutrition, and stress is the most empowering step women can take now. In the second episode, Dr. Mimi Haddad meets with Rev. Dr. Aída Besançon Spencer to explore key ways Scripture goes against the grain of culture. While some scholars uphold Bible cultural as the moral standard, Aída encouraged readers to begin in the New Testament. For example, in the story of Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38-42), Martha was anxious that Mary would help her serve the disciples a meal. But Jesus said, “Martha, Martha … You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Jesus reversed women's priorities from domestic spheres to theological spheres: learn God's truth. Paul also said, in 1 Tim 2:11, “A woman should learn in quietness (silence) and full submission.” Insisting on women's silence was/is a to call women to learn as the theological scholars (Rabbis) did at the time of Christ, in silence—with rapt focus. Aída believes we need more scholarly reflection on women and silence in Scripture. Aída ends with a warning to always view people as created in God's image and considers passages also embrace the shared dignity and agency of women. Reflecting on the marginalization for Native Americans who were accused of and punished for alleged idol worship, by white colonizes who believed they were given the US given as theocracy, Aída and her husband William David Spencer address both topic in a powerful article titled, Calling on God or Colonial Oppression. Aída addresses the leadership of women in the early church, with a focus on context. Whereas women's leadership in Ephesus was different from women in other contexts, like women planting churches like Lydia in Greece. Aída ends by reflecting on Helen Barrett Montgomery (1861-1934) was elected the first president of national Woman's American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. She was also elected the first president (and woman) of an American denomination, the Northern Baptist Convention in 1920. She's also the first woman to translate the New Testament in 1924. Her translation of Roman 16:1-3—interpreted Pheobe as a “minister” and “overseer,” yet it has taken so very long for other translators to see the same biblical truth (in 1843). Barrett Montgonery's The New Testament in Modern English was republished in 1952, and translated Romans 16:1-2: “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a minister of the church at Cenchreae. I beg you to give her a Christian welcome, as the saints should, and to assist her in any matter in which she may have need of you. for she herself has been made an overseer to many people, including myself.” Prostateo, the verb meaning to be leader or ruler of, hold office, authority for providing, regent (Liddell & Scott's classical dictionary). Guest Bio Rev. Dr. Aída Besançon Spencer, Ph.D., Th.M., M.Div., is Senior Professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, S. Hamilton, MA. Born and reared in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, she has served as community organizer, minister, and educator in a variety of urban and suburban settings. She has over 200 publications, including 20 books, among these are commentaries of James, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, 1 Peter, and 2 Corinthians and books encouraging women in leadership, such as Beyond the Curse: Women Called to Ministry, Global Voices on Biblical Equality, Christian Egalitarian Leadership, The Goddess Revival: A Biblical Response to Goddess Spirituality, Marriage at the Crossroads, and the novel Cave of Little Faces. An ordained Presbyterian minister, she is married to the Rev. Dr. William David Spencer. Their blog is entitled Applying Biblical Truths Today. They have one adult son, Stephen. AP correspondent Shelley Adler reports on Giving Tuesday.
Women are responsible for over 85% of consumer spending. Not only do we buy for ourselves, but we purchase for everyone else in the house! (Don't get us started on the burden that represents). Why not consider using your economic power to support businesses that are owned by WOMEN! SHOW NOTES Globally, women control about $20 trillion in annual consumer spending, and that figure could climb as high as $28 trillion in the next five years. These numbers amount to women controlling and/or influencing 85% of all consumer spending. Wow - that's a lot of votes with our economic dollars. We buy for ourselves, our families, including children and spouses and so many of the people we care for. And yes, women find the shopping experience unsatisfactory and in many cases shopping experiences are foolishly geared to men. Ladies, let's leverage our economic voting power for women owned businesses. The number of new women owned businesses is outpacing the number of businesses owned by men. In 2021, women owned about 25% of all businesses in the US and by 2023, that number had reached 39%. While women owned 39% of business in 2023, we employed about 9% of the employees and about 5% of all revenues. Just under 40,000 women owned businesses employ 50 or more people. This is all to say there are lots of small women owned businesses out there. Women owned businesses face particular challenges - such as lack of access to capital - but the impacts of women owned businesses are significant, and that incongruity does not make sense. So let's use our dollars to support the business making the most difference. Women tend to start businesses to make a difference rather than just to make money; and women owned businesses are more likely to support their communities. Turn Black Friday into a political act and shop women owned. Menopause needs to be taken more seriously. Period. I see so many women that get their concerns brushed off as “no big deal” just because they don't feel like themselves and want to lose weight. And they get told the same advice over and over despite it not working: “eat less move more” And quite frankly - all of that pisses me off. If it is a big deal to them then it should be a big deal to you. This is what is leaving women feeling alone, vulnerable and desperate. And the people who should be supporting them and helping them are quite frankly just contributing to the problem. So ladies - this one's for you. To share with other women who feel alone. To share with those who need to hear it. Let's advocate! She is the author of Win When They Say You Won't: Break Through Barriers and Keep Leveling Up Your Success*. In this conversation, Daphne invites us to look at ourselves through the lens of a product, just as others will view us. We discuss the three critical elements of how stakeholders view you. Plus, Daphne and I explore the steps you can take to improve how you're perceived through the different lenses that stakeholders see us through. Key Points Stakeholders are crucial for your success and it's helpful for you to view yourself in their eyes (and yours) as a product. Three elements are key: performance is doing your job well, imagine is how people describe you, and exposure is who knows you. When you get radio silence in the context of happenings inside of your organization, that's an indicator you are underexposed. Caution: you can also be overexposed. Map your stakeholders in the context of their influence in your work and their interest in how it support their own objectives. Mentors will make suggestions of things you should try. Find the part that will work for you and move on the advice. Resources Mentioned Win When They Say You Won't: Break Through Barriers and Keep Leveling Up Your Success* by Daphne E.
