Today is February 29, which, if you ask me, is one of the most fun days. Ever since I was a little kid, I found it so interesting to have a day that only happens once every four years, and I knew I wanted to take advantage of this when I realized that one of my podcast episodes fell on the 29th. This is where the idea for sharing marketing predictions came in.But, as an overachiever at heart, I knew I couldn't just share one set of marketing predictions. Oh, no. I wanted to call in the big wigs to help make looking into the future of marketing into a mini series.I'm so grateful to Liz Wilcox, Lindsay Padilla, and Andréa Jones for joining me on the show to talk about email, podcasting, and social media marketing. But now the big day is here, and it's my job to pull out the crystal ball and cover all the other marketing-specific bases that we didn't talk about yet on the show. The pressure, y'all! After a moment of panic—and a ton of research—I came up with a few key things I wanted to delve into on the podcast. This episode explores the uncertainty of SEO, predictions for changes in marketing copy and content, shifts in social media advertising, the role of AI in marketing, and why we need to start paying attention to the stricter privacy regulations coming our way.______________________________________________EPISODE 111.Read the show notes and view the full transcript here: https://erinollila.com/celebrating-leap-year-with-marketing-predictions-for-the-next-four-years/______________________________________________Learn more about your host, Erin OllilaErin Ollila believes in the power of words and how a message can inform – and even transform – its intended audience. What does the future of podcasting have in store for us? Will there be growth? Stagnation? Will things evolve much more from what they are now? The truth is...I don't really know.If recent history is an indicator as to what we can expect over the next four years, listenership is going to grow and private podcasting — which is still baby in the podcast world — is going to evolve. But what else can we expect from podcasting besides just growth? I asked Lindsay Padilla, podcasting expert and the co-founder of HelloAudio, to weigh in and share her predictions for the next four years of podcasting. We'll check back in 2028...but I'm sure Lindsay's thoughts about the future of podcasting are going to ring true.______________________________________________EPISODE 109.Read the show notes and view the full transcript here: https://erinollila.com/the-future-of-podcasting-lindsay-padilla/______________________________________________Learn more about our guest, Lindsay PadillaDr. Lindsay Padilla is an ex-community college professor who accidentally started a business while on the tenure track. This was an unexpected question that came up after we launched The Podcast Newsroom in 2021: Could your private podcast replace your public podcast? While public podcasts are great for getting discovered, private podcasts offer a more targeted audience and deeper connection with your listeners. On the other hand, private podcasts allow you to see exactly what your listeners are listening to and make it easier to convert them. Public podcasts, on the other hand, offer discoverability and make it easier for listeners to share. So, which is it? Private podcast or public podcast? In this episode of The More Profitable Podcast, we'll talk about the pros and cons of private and public podcasts and answer the question: Is a private podcast a replacement for a public podcast? 2:35 - A special announcement on something we're doing in Q3 (consider this your invite) 6:06 - The relationship differences between hosts and listeners when it comes to private and public podcasts 8:29 - The differences between public and private podcasting 10:14 - The advantages of a private podcast and the insights created by going private 12:00 - The major downside of private podcasting and why, for me, it's not a replacement for my public podcast 16:05 - How a private podcast might help you experiment with podcasting if you're considering it but are still unsure 18:00 - Two additional resources to check out after listening to this episode Mentioned In Is Your Private Podcast A Replacement For Your Public Podcast Learn more about the Profitable Podcaster Mastermind Get access to The Podcast Newsroom Chris Davis - All Systems Go! In addition to launching our own private podcast about a year ago, we've launched several private podcasts for clients over the last year. We've talked a lot about private podcasts on this show, but one thing we've never really dug into is the strategic differences between a private podcast and a public podcast. I want to talk about three today. Get access to The Podcast Newsroom today at https://uncommonlymore.com/newsroom

If you want to lead yourself well, you have to know yourself well. The tricky thing is, it can be surprisingly hard to really know yourself. We live in a world where we are told by others–on repeat–who we should be and who we are.We have gotten so good at being who we think we are supposed to be that we end up believing there is something intrinsically wrong with who we uniquely are.Especially when it comes to behaviors, personality traits and abilities associated with how your nervoussystem operates. We tag the word disorder onto neurological differences like autism and attention deficit and hyperactivity which pathologize aspects of being human. This dangerously narrow view of health and functioning decreases everyone's ability to better understand the incredible resources we have in ourselves and in those around us.We all are trying to figure out what makes us tick and how we can improve our work and life. And that is what today's Unburdened Leader Roundtable guests did recently–and in the process, they were each formally diagnosed with ADHD–which helped them connect the dots on so many aspects of their life and start to lead themselves and their businesses with more confidence and clarity.Lindsay Padilla, PhD is a former community college professor who accidentally started a business while on the tenure track. We all grew up being told who was the creative one, who was the smart one, and who was the sporty one. There was no space for anyone to hold a multiplicity of skills and interests. Of course, none of us hold just one identity, skill or interest. So an identity crisis–or multiple identity crises–are inevitable. But an identity crisis can be a powerful turning point in your life and work. On one hand, you can keep doing what you've been doing—what you're supposed to do. Or you can take a big risk and do something different. We all have PhDs on what we are supposed to do. We have breathed in the messages on what it means to be a success and responsible. Staying on the current path is oddly comfortable—even when it sucks. When you decide to honor the desire to grow and make a pivot with your work or take a risk with a significant relationship in your life, you are entering into a stage of growth that can be lonely and a bit disorienting. But leaders like us know there's more to life than the status quo. My guest went through her own shifts in her career and identity and is growing a business and a life that looks very different from her original life plan. Lindsay Padilla, PhD is an ex-community college professor who accidentally started a business while on the tenure track. Lindsay Padilla tells us the good things about Home Warranties during this hot market today. Home warranty is a yearlong renewable home service plan that helps with the costs of repairs or replacements of systems and appliances. It is adjacent to home insurance but home insurance is intended for things that might happen unlike home warranty that is intended for things that will happen like your appliances will eventually fail in the long run. During this hot sellers market now, sellers are not offering home warranty anymore but instead the buyers are offering it to the sellers during the listing time to prevent repairs from breaking the deal. Most successful deals today involved this kind of set up for it will give security against repairs that might give problems to the deal. Listen on your favourite podcast app like iTunes or Spotify. As you start to think about how you can deliver an incredible service to your clients with online programs, there is an incredible feature that can make that program extra amazing - and that is incorporating audio. Even though I come from a background in health science, I have studied program planning and focused on what can be done to ensure your clients start and complete their program, so they get the results they're looking for. Today, we have another special guest, Lindsay Padilla, Co-Founder of Hello Audio. She shares about her company and how to use her audio tool, which we currently use in The Leveraged Practice Program for our clients. Lindsay and I go deeper into audio and how you can use audio structurally in your business, whether it's within your program or in how you market it. Here's what we talked about: Lindsay shares about her background, what she was doing before becoming a business owner and the why behind the creation of her company, HelloAudio (and the steps her husband and her took to make it happen!) What her experience as a college professor teaching mostly online courses made her realize (and how there was a need for more support for her students!) How as an online program provider, you need to understand programming to provide a better student experience (and have people complete your program!) How audio can help reduce the overwhelm and lack of time that people may feel as they go through a program (and how they often start to build habits around when they listen!) What Lindsay sees about the future of audio (and how it ties with focusing on relationship marketing!) The number one way that you are going to help someone be successful and get the result that they want and need is by going through your entire program. Sharing your content in audio format can make it easier for your clients to access it and increase the chance that they show up, make progress, move through and complete your program! Taking Action [2:05] Lindsay has been in the course business and consulting people with courses for the last four years. She built a course business and decided to solve a problem with software that she saw in that very coarse business. She has been working with people who've launched multi seven-figure courses all the way down to their first five-figure beta. [2:29] According to Lindsay, the biggest problem is course completion and getting your students to really get through the material and learn. Lindsay's Tip [3:09] Lindsay's tip is to take into consideration what your students need to learn. She built Hello Audio to solve this very problem because she thinks logging into a learning management system, signing in, sitting down, and having to watch a video and navigate transcripts and workbooks and then download mp3 files is just all over the place The Reason for creating Hello Audio [3:43] What Lindsay and her team are doing with Hello Audio and why they built it is they started to recognize that we're all very busy. Audio is literally the only medium that you can multitask. Your eyes are not occupied when you're listening to something. A Course that will be memorable [4:25] Lindsay says that friction that you remove to get students to the information as soon and as quick as possible and in a way that will best serve them will take you so far. When we talk about profitable online courses, we're talking about courses that sell themselves that the people who get the results go out and talk about it. [4:48] Consuming that content and getting the students from A to B is literally the goal, and if you can do that, they will talk about how great your content is. The Core of Becoming an Educator [5:35] Lindays says that the core of becoming an educator and passing on your knowledge is watching someone take that jump and move a couple steps further ahead of where they are right now. [6:10] Lindsay says that some of the first initial use cases are people just taking their video content and dragging and dropping it into whole audio. It's almost like repurposing, and it's offering a different way of getting the material. Converting Videos [7:25] Lindsay and her team built full drag and drop and convert the video for the students. They take video files and turn them into audio. They also create transcripts as well. If you already have a course and have a product in video form, one of the easiest and first things you can do with Hello audio is convert that into a podcast so your students can listen to it and be consumed. Lindsay's Feed [8:44] Lindsay made a feed for herself of content that she wants to read and listen to that she experienced online with coaching and consulting things that she buys. She sends private feeds to people and is actually raising capital for Hello audio. She sends the audio version of the pitch with a personal message to each investor. [9:25] Lindsay wants people to realize that audio content is not just podcasts and that it's more like a production. She has people using raw files for one-on-one coaching experiences and also people who use those as lead magnets and challenges. She and her team made it an unlimited feature is because they wanted people to play with the idea of turning content that they already have into audio to skyrocket consumption rates. It does not matter if the content that you are putting out there is short form. The important thing is that you are constantly sharing your ideas for prospects to see. ----- Automated Transcript Below Dean Soto 0:00:00 Hey, this is Dean Soto, founder of FreedomInFiveMinutes.com and ProSulm.com and we're here again with another Freedom In Five Minutes podcast episode. Today's topic is this: The Key is to Sow as Many Seeds as Possible. That and more coming up. Dean Soto 0:00:30 Well, good morning on this chilly day. It's overcast. Hopefully, it starts raining over here. We’re out with the Luna Meister doing our normal walk. She's sniffing around. We are at it again. Dean Soto 0:00:44 So, when I first started doing anything entrepreneurial, I ran across a guy who is obviously very popular. Pretty much everyone knows him in the business world and that is Mr. Gary Vaynerchuk. When I first started, I read his book Crush It. Crush It. Dean Soto 0:01:11 So, I read his book Crush It and I immediately started — or so I thought — crushing it. I just was putting out a whole bunch of different content. I was reaching out to a whole bunch of people. I was literally killing myself trying to build my business at the time. Dean Soto 0:01:33 One of the things that I noticed right away was that it was very difficult. It was extremely difficult and I was literally like killing myself. I'd be up to one or two because you know he even talks about in the book like oh you should be up at all hours of the night. Dean Soto 0:01:56 A big part of that — I actually for a few years ended up not liking Gary Vaynerchuk at All. I honestly didn't because I was burning myself out a ton mainly because I didn't know what I was doing. I didn't have any sales experience and I didn't have really much of anything else and so I'd be up late. Dean Soto 0:02:28 If you go and search, you'll see some of my older Pro Sulum videos where I'd be up at 1 o'clock 2 o'clock in the morning talking about gosh I forgot what that Google product was. It was like a Google communication product. Dean Soto 0:02:45 Sorry, I’m eating some miners lettuce right now. What was that? It kind of — almost kind of looks like slack but anyway... They shut it down a long time ago and I was talking about that and how it only just really kind of random things. But those YouTube videos are still out there where I was trying to put out all this massive amount of content but really having no place for you to put the gas. The gas would just kind of spill all over the place. Dean Soto 0:03:19 If you had a car and you went to the gas station and you didn't know where the actual gas tank was and so you just kind of start spraying the car with gas hoping that somehow the gas is going to get inside the car somehow. Dean Soto 0:03:38 Of course, you look retarded which is exactly the way I looked. But you know, you're spraying gasoline all over this car and because of that, you end up just making yourself look like an idiot and your car doesn't work. That's the same way it was for me. I didn't really have a sales system. I didn't have anything to sell people and so it was just this massive amount of content but nowhere for them to go and actually buy things which would then sustain me to continue to do more content and back and forth back. Dean Soto 0:04:21 For a long time, I avoided doing content in general because of that very reason I avoided. I had burned myself out so much that I would do content, I would see some results and then I'd stop and I do content I see some results and then I would stop because I just really didn't like that feeling of I really didn't like that feeling of you know I don't want to put it off of starting and burning myself out with all of this content that's being put outright. Dean Soto 0:04:59 Well after a while I definitely noticed when people did. When content was being made on a regular basis, people did interact and found it valuable. You're always your worst critic. And so, I'm thinking, “Whatever it's not that big of a deal. I'm not that great at whatever it is I'm trying to explain.” Dean Soto 0:05:29 But over and over again as long as the content was being put out, people were refining value of some sort over time. But I still would consistently stop. I would consistently just put something out and then stop. I was a good consistent stopper because I really didn't have a system for all of that content. Dean Soto 0:05:54 Fast forward today, I have a system that was developed by me as well as it was developed by — it was actually refined by my core 5 staff really really well. It was made into something that's really really awesome. Dean Soto 0:06:19 So, whenever these podcasts go out, they do the blog post into transcripts. They do the show notes. They do all this different stuff and it turns into something that's really awesome. Dean Soto 0:06:31 That allows me to focus on the content while they create the backbone around it and what's been really neat is that it's allowed me to sow seeds. Dean Soto 0:06:47 It's allowed me to sow a lot of different seeds whether it's video or audio. I'm going to be into some more video type stuff so that when videos come out there will be clips and there'll be different things like that based around those videos and put on two different types of content syndication formats and things like that. Dean Soto 0:07:16 But one thing that has allowed me to see is that the more you sow, the more that you're going to reap. Now, one of my mentors Jermaine Griggs mentioned before is that done is better than perfect. Done is always better than perfect. The more that you are able to just put something out there and obviously you don't want it to be crappy but the more that you're able to put something out there for the world to see and the more chances there are that somebody's going to see it and find value. Dean Soto 0:07:57 In fact, just recently I've been hammering LinkedIn with content because I want out not just because of lead generation which that's a big part is there's literally no way I can continue doing what I'm doing unless I had customers coming through multiple channels right. Dean Soto 0:08:17 There is literally no way it's just not going to happen. It's not possible. But I hammer LinkedIn because that is where I can meet and interact with my target market — the people that would find the most value in what I'm talking about, what I'm saying, what I'm doing. Dean Soto 0:08:47 So much so that not only — so I'll give you kind of a seek the secret sauce at least for now of the way that we target LinkedIn and I might actually end up changing this in the next few weeks to even be more powerful because I have been seeing results and I have been able to bless people who have become clients of ProSulum through LinkedIn — through that avenue. Dean Soto 0:09:24 The first and foremost is that I try to automate as much as possible the actual connections in LinkedIn so this is my way of sowing seeds. If you've listened to past podcasts you'll know that there are three ways of automation. Dean Soto 0:09:47 There's the manual automation — something that has to be done by someone. There's automatic automation, the technological automation where something can be done completely by a computer program. Dean Soto 0:09:59 And then, there's the hybrid automation where part of it's done by a computer program or some kind of automated thing. And the other part of it's done by the person. Dean Soto 0:10:18 It's kind of a mix of the two. Well, with the LinkedIn automation I utilized a lot of stuff to connect with people — to reach out and endorse people, add value to people's lives and then I also have a calendar that is more of a manual automation thing where I create content based around a specific topic every day and that content all of that allows me to connect with the right people. Dean Soto 0:10:50 It allows me to scale. It allows me to scale the messages that I put out on a regular basis and it allows me to then sell over time the concepts that I have so that's to bless more and more people over time. Dean Soto 0:11:20 So, all that being said, I have all these things going on from that automation standpoint. I create all this content, and put all this stuff out and this is not about me. Dean Soto 0:11:40 Look at all the stuff that I'm doing you can do this too in your respective platform where you can utilize all these different tools to kind of till the soil so to speak. And then so when you are planting seeds when you are putting content out there when you are asking for a sale when you are talking about your business the soil is already tilled so that you've given so much value ahead of time. Dean Soto 0:12:07 When somebody's ready to buy, they buy not because you had to sell them on the spot and you know they didn't have buyer's remorse and things like that but because you have given so much value ahead of time that they are they have really now had no choice not to buy because they see that, “Wow if you're giving away all this value why would I not — like, whatever I'm buying from you has to be even better, right?” Dean Soto 0:12:38 What's the point of all this? The whole point of all this is that once you have developed kind of a system like a backbone to keep. to that where you know where you're gonna send people in order for them to purchase and to put fuel into the car that is your business once you have figured that out. And the more that you can put ideas out there on a regular basis and it could be short short short ideas. Dean Soto 0:13:12 If you ever go to my LinkedIn profile and you check the content that goes out, it's relatively short like all my videos are less than 10 minutes long. Purposely because of LinkedIn all of my posts are relatively short. Dean Soto 0:13:31 I share a lot of different things that are interesting to me and comment on them — kind of curate them. And it's through that — it's through that that I'm able to share, I'm able to get people on board on my mentality — and kind of indoctrinated into a different way of thinking that's going to benefit them and over time it just means more and more clients more and more customers. Dean Soto 0:14:10 and so what can you do right now in your perspective foot platform whether it's LinkedIn or Twitter or Facebook or wherever where you can just continually sow seeds where you can continually sow more and more seeds that allow your company to grow that allows your company to bless other people. Dean Soto 0:14:31 I want to challenge you to do that right now. I do have this one calendar. It's not mine and I'm not gonna get any affiliate income from this at all but I think her name is Lindsey Padilla it's on Wednesday. It's called On Course Social. She has a really good calendar for like the next three years It will give you ideas of what to post every day for your social media accounts and I found that it has been awesome so definitely want to check that out and yeah I would just Google search her. I think it's Lindsay Padilla. Do a Google search on that pretty awesome resource. It works well and it only gives you one tip a day so you gotta have to fill in everything else. But it's a great start. Dean Soto 0:15:37 What can you do? What seeds can use today in your business and in your platform that allows other people to find a ton of value in what you're doing? All right, so this is Dean Soto I'm gonna finish the rest of my day and I will see you in the next Freedom In Five Minutes podcast episode.

Have you ever thought about creating and teaching an online course, but thought it was just too much to take on? Or that there would be so much involved that you just couldn't do it? Today we are talking with Dr. Lindsay Padilla the mastermind behind the Build a Better Beta Program. Lindsay's program is all about creating a simple Beta course with minimal tech. Let's get into it! Rather than starting with something new, Lindsay built her business from the in person classroom as a sociology professor at a community college. She recognized that entrepreneurs weren't sure how to teach, organize content, and what technology that they needed in order to be able to deliver content. This led her to create her signature “Build a Better Beta” program. It's all about how to launch a course as quickly/easily as possible with as little tech as possible. She is excited to help people who have been sitting on courses too long because of all the things they thought they had to have ready in order to launch their program. You grow your course based on the feedback. From the beta, not from what you think someone else wants to learn. You just need to put the idea out there and work collaboratively and iteratively with your first set of students. When someone comes to me and says, “Jaime, we need to get this out there.” My first response is to ask them how many phases that is launch. We need to get phase 1 out of the way as quickly as possible so we can learn: what our students actually want where they get hung up where we need to expand and evolve It's funny, I never realized it before but as Lindsay pointed out, most of the time courses created by marketers are basically textbooks. That is, they are material but they are not true learning experiences and don't reside in a construct for completion and implementation. “I believe courses are true learning experiences.”- Lindsay Padilla Lindsay wants to change this perception and create an actual learning environment similar to what you would get in a college course. In this space, there are multiple factors including the textbook. She's reframing the idea of what it means to TEACH a course. If she gave you a textbook and said go learn this and then she tested you in a couple weeks how good would you do if all you had was a textbook? As you heard, Lindsay called me out on using the term “Minimum Viable Product” because it's a software development term. A better beta is more like a minimum awesome course. What makes it awesome is that it's an intimate co-creative experience. Lindsay's program teaches her students to not pre record anything or pick a platform until you have live taught in a workshop setting because it helps you to really show up for the people that pay for your expertise. This gives you the most flexibility and allows you to truly listen to your students in a LIVE setting. You are allowed to charge money for this kind of experience. Phase one should really only be how can I get my students from point A to point B. You and your expertise are what is valuable NOT how fancy your graphics are. It's truly about you and your students. We all know there are so many tech options out there for virtual courses. Most of the ones the gurus are using are going to work. But you can get stuck in the weeds with this little detail of which platform they should be on. I see people crowdsourcing on social media all the time... asking things like what platform they should be on. This is where I pop in and say, “Can we have a conversation about this?” If I know where someone wants to be in 6 months to a year I can easily suggest 2-3 pieces of software to help them get there. But if I'm one comment in a thread of 400 comments, my value isn't demonstrated. Those people are no more clear than when they asked the question in the group. What is the fastest way to get someone from “what they want” to “seeing the result”? In this online space, a lot of our validation comes from outside. The issue with this is that it puts doubt in the minds of people who really do have information that they could teach -- they ask themselves questions like am I qualified enough? Lindsay has found that her customers are largely already very credible. Therefore, the thing that is truly going to move their business forward is starting to serve people. Lindsay and I both see would-be online creators put tiny decisions like choosing a platform in their way just so they can avoid the real true hard work of putting yourself out there and selling something. People are trying to avoid rejection. Predictably, the biggest fear is often that nobody is going to buy your course. Which leads to a mindset spiral.. If someone doesn't buy our course then the knowledge we are offering isn't valuable. It's not possible to avoid these fears. But we do need minimize the emotional/mental toll regarding the results. And then we can realize that this result is not connected to what we actually know and our value. We are literally JUST testing out a product. If no one buys your course, your material is likely not the issue. It's likely the marketing message not the content!! The mindset of running a beta is that you are collecting data. If you sit around deciding which platform to use then you never collect that data. Time is money. You just need to start teaching... that's where the value is. Let's go back to the textbook reference. The teachers who teach classes are excellent teachers because they are teaching what they know and they are using the textbook as a reference. I could write your textbook and you could teach and we could not ever have any contact. But you might be far more successful than I am at TEACHING the material because you have made a connection with your audience. You have sold them into your philosophy on how to interpret this material. This is something that sticks out to me. I work in the back end of a lot of courses making sure that everything fits together so the content is delivered correctly and on schedule. Technology can either enhance or ruin good teaching because it is the tool to create the experience. When Lindsay is recommending tools for her students she keeps it as minimum as possible. She tends to recommend things like: Google Docs- workbooks, lesson planning, being able to edit the doc live on the fly when something comes to you. Using Google Docs creates flexibility in the first stages. Zoom Pro- making sure you can record a video and be a workshop style thing when delivering content. Getting the package that allows you to livestream is great if you can do it. “If the textbook is the content you are creating, then Facebook is the classroom where they can talk to each other and get to know you a little better.”- Lindsay Padilla Lindsay likes to stream the workshops directly into the Facebook group for a beta course. This way there is no need to worry about recording video and uploading and details like that. Another benefit is that some students can't attend a Zoom event because of their internet or download situation but can easily (and often LOVE) attending on Facebook. And this also allows the Facebook post to house the session comments. That opens up engagement! Everything that Lindsay teaches in Build a Better Beta is designed to make it easy for students/clients to have success and help you improve on your initial ideas. Yup -- we're going there → One of the messiest aspects of online courses is collecting payment. In the early days of “Build a Better Beta” before moving to MemberVault, Lindsay taught people to use a Paypal.Me link. But when it came to setting up a payment plan or subscription, it got a little messy. Then she started working with MemberVault. This platform does some really great things. AND all of the premium features are available for you to use up to 50 members. I ran a full series on MemberVault which you can access here. Most of Lindsay's students Beta programs are less than 50 people. Membervault has been such a game changer because of all the integrations it allows. It also allows you to create payment plans for people who need that and you just send them a link. It's so easy! I was seriously blown away when Lindsay dropped this brilliance on the podcast. This use of MemberVault is genius. She teaches her students to use one element of MemberVault and not worry about the other {amazing} features. This doesn't differ from one of my core values → keeping a very streamlined tech stack. That means keeping as few pieces of tech as possible. It's also important to implement everything you possibly can with that system. What Lindsay is telling her students to do in phase one is to focus on and implement: the payments work on your relationships teaching what makes value Then once that phase is done, if your clients wanted this course off Facebook you put your content into MemberVault because they are already using it for their payments. I am not saying you have to implement everything in a system all at once. Rather, it's more that have to exhaust that piece of software until it no longer serves you. I really like the fact Lindsay does a stair step approach when it comes to MemberVault like you would do with any other piece of software. Zoom - A powerful low cost solution Zoom is a very powerful tool. Zoom Webinar is the addon that allows you to livestream into Facebook. A Zoom meeting cannot be streamed, but a Zoom Webinar can. Using this addon, you are streamlining it for the user without adding a lot of complexity for the teacher. It does take the price of the tool from $15 a month to $55 a month. Zoom makes it really easy to remove this addon when you are done with your beta and add it back in when you're ready to do another round of webinars or run your course again. . Most Beta program for Lindsey's students are about 6-8 weeks long. Lindsay will ask her clients, “Is it worth investing $80 so you don't have to do all the downloading, uploading, and allowing students to live attend?” For Lindsay it is because she knows the time it takes to do all those things. Lindsay teaches people to organize their Facebook group by units and modules. Facebook becomes the true classroom. It will have the workshop that she taught live, the Q&A session she did separately, and maybe some relevant posts from her students all in one place. Live streaming your course into Facebook allows you organize your content so that someone can come in and quickly get the material they need. It's saving her time to spend the $80 and she can turn it off really easily. “Paying for ease of use in tech...you are buying back your time.”- Lindsay Padilla There is a whole component that Facebook has added to their groups that Lindsay is taking advantage of to make it easier for her students. She is using a Facebook Group in a way that allows the modules. Facebook has become a great tool to recreate a classroom online without a huge amount of overhead. Lindsay just told the entire Tech of Business audience that they can launch a course and spend around $200. What a way to just get started! Maybe it's time for me to create a course! Guess what? You're like everyone else who is reading these shownotes and has listened to the podcast … you've bought into courses, masterminds, and programs that are delivered in an online capacity. There is a lot of overhead that goes into using those courses and full taking advantage of everything you want to learn when you are running a business. Let's break it all down! "The world online with online business is really changing and people have so much information and it can become very overwhelming." - Jessica Wayman We start our conversation off with talking about online courses… There is just so much to consume and often we don't get through everything that we purchase or want to spend our time on for one reason or another. Maybe we just want to learn all the things so we buy all the courses! Jessica is a professional student. She went through 50 online courses in a very short amount of time. And by doing so, she realized she had TOO MUCH information to consume. She now leads a mastermind for people who have what she calls course addiction; it's called Course Rehab. This mastermind uses a 12 step process, which she pulled from her background in mental health. The steps are designed to help you get out of your own way. "Fear of success can be kind of scary." -Jessica Wayman As a listener or reader you may be creating a course and you are now wondering if you are just adding to the “noise”. Relax, I work with a lot of course creators and as long as you are really clear on who your target audience is, you have a better chance of THEM accepting and completing the course. We're talking about the big mass marketed courses here. These are the ones I find that aren't targeted enough for people to fully take action on. Jessica has learned a lot about courses and teaching from her friend and teacher, Lindsay Padilla. Lindsay's program is called Build a Better Beta and helped Jessica learn how to build a better course. Lindsey teaches a system that allows you to create your course in a way that isn't overwhelming. It helps you to go through the process so you don't just start it and end it. ** Lindsay will be on the podcast later this month, so we'll link that up here when it's live! "Courses are valuable, but you have to be able to time block and get through them on a schedule, make it part of your job to learn, and then implement!" -Jessica Wayman Here's a link to Lindsay's masterclass: http://omg.lindsaympadilla.com/optin Now, don't let the technology get in your way on creating or consuming a course. If you are signed up for a course and you lost your password, send a note. There is no shame in that. I would rather send a password reset link 17 times and have my student find success than for them to never log in and never attempt to learn what they wanted. Getting into the psychology of it all, there are so many reasons why people by courses. There is a thirst for knowledge. There is a drive to keep up with what other entrepreneurs are doing. There is a fear of missing out. There is a desire of wanting to become more and create more impact. A lot of courses might be teaching you how to grow your business. People are really developing their own college education in a way by purchasing these courses as long as they get through the course and complete them. "Most entrepreneurs have really big goals and courses are there to support them in developing themselves personally as well as professionally." -Jessica Wayman Keep your course goals in mind… If you are taking a course and your desired outcome is just having completed it your mindset will be completely different than if your desired outcome is to implement this piece of software the way your “guru” does. There are people out there who think they are going to get the same results that those gurus got JUST by purchasing their course. What you need to keep in mind is what they want their major outcome to be, who they are serving, and what they are looking to get out of the course. "The main key to keep in mind is that the world is full of information, but it's what you do it that matters." - Jessica Wayman If you are just sitting on information, then you are sitting on a legacy of something you could create that helps someone else create a bigger and better life. You are sitting knowledge and knowledge is power! You have to be able to do something with it! That brings us back to why this podcast exists. I created this podcast to help YOU take the next step. Whether we're talking about a piece of software, methodology, or organization, it's about making progress to leave/make a legacy. It's so important to treat your business LIKE A REAL BUSINESS. Here are Jessica's Top Tips: Keep your business organized. You need to categorize things before you can make a decision. This applies to email, contracts, files, etc. You need to be able to be the CEO of your business. It's important to setup SOPs for when you grow and bring someone new in to help you work your business. This takes away any gray areas of how things should be done. We can't be everything to everyone. We need to find ways to make our lives easier. We have to learn how to create boundaries for ourselves. Then you can develop a team and they know their roles. This will free up time for you to work on furthering your business. If you are looking for an incredible VA, hire someone from Priority VA. Know what you can delegate and what you can do yourself. Know what is a good use of your time. This is why we have service providers. When you outsource in your business, make sure you are going to the right person for your needs. Jessica urges you to come to me to the tech she says, “She's really really good!” Thank you, Jessica. When it comes to organizing your computer content -- there are both the online/cloud storage locations (as we discussed in episode 011) and there are the files on your computer. Cloud storage, like Google Drive, is especially helpful when you are working with active team members. This is a good place for your SOPs to live. As they change, they will directly change in that Google Drive. Your freebies in pdf form, photos for social media that don't need to be accessible to your team, these things may live in Dropbox, since that's more of a storage container than a living document holder. Living documents are more easily accessed through Google Drive. Google Drive= collaboration. As business owners, we opt-in to freebies and get downloads fairly regularly. With email opt-ins this can fill up pretty quickly. Organizing these into folders and assigning a freebie to the correct label will help you. If you get to the point you have 7000 emails just archive them and then start fresh. Create the folders so that it works for you, but DON'T keep all those freebies in your inbox. There are resources for handling your email if you can't. Inbox Done and all they do is email. If you find yourself so overwhelmed with email this may be a good option. A good rule of thumb to follow is: Stop opting in to everything. You're going to see a lot of repeats out there in the online space. Unsubscribe from lists that you aren't reading. It is flooding your email and actually doesn't help the business ave you on their list. A great tool for Gmail is Unroll me. Jessica mentioned this at the tail end of the conversation. These shownotes touch on the high points of the conversation. I encourage you to listen -- there is a lot we covered and I would hate for you to miss out! Lindsay’s program is called Build a Better Beta and helped Jessica learn how to build a better course. Lindsey teaches a system that allows you to create your course in a way that isn’t overwhelming. It helps you to go through the process so you don’t just start it and end it. ** Lindsay will be on the podcast later this month, so we’ll link that up here when it’s live! "Courses are valuable, but you have to be able to time block and get through them on a schedule, make it part of your job to learn, and then implement!" -Jessica Wayman Here’s a link to Lindsay’s masterclass: http://omg.lindsaympadilla.com/optin Now, don’t let the technology get in your way on creating or consuming a course. "The main key to keep in mind is that the world is full of information, but it’s what you do it that matters." - Jessica Wayman If you are just sitting on information, then you are sitting on a legacy of something you could create that helps someone else create a bigger and better life. You are sitting knowledge and knowledge is power! You have to be able to do something with it! That brings us back to why this podcast exists. I created this podcast to help YOU take the next step. Whether we’re talking about a piece of software, methodology, or organization, it’s about making progress to leave/make a legacy. It’s so important to treat your business LIKE A REAL BUSINESS. Here are Jessica’s Top Tips: Keep your business organized. You need to categorize things before you can make a decision. This applies to email, contracts, files, etc. You need to be able to be the CEO of your business. It’s important to setup SOPs for when you grow and bring someone new in to help you work your business. This takes away any gray areas of how things should be done. We can’t be everything to everyone. Jessica urges you to come to me to the tech she says, “She’s really really good!” Thank you, Jessica. Your freebies in pdf form, photos for social media that don’t need to be accessible to your team, these things may live in Dropbox, since that’s more of a storage container than a living document holder. Create the folders so that it works for you, but DON’T keep all those freebies in your inbox. There are resources for handling your email if you can’t. Inbox Done and all they do is email. If you find yourself so overwhelmed with email this may be a good option. A good rule of thumb to follow is: Stop opting in to everything. You’re going to see a lot of repeats out there in the online space. Unsubscribe from lists that you aren’t reading. It is flooding your email and actually doesn’t help the business ave you on their list. A great tool for Gmail is Unroll me. Jessica mentioned this at the tail end of the conversation. These shownotes touch on the high points of the conversation. I encourage you to listen -- there is a lot we covered and I would hate for you to miss out! Dr. Lindsay Padilla is the ex-professor-turned-entrepreneur behind Build a Better Beta, an online program that helps influential experts release courses to their audiences quickly and easily, so they can focus on theirs teaching. The Better Beta Framework was born out of her tenure-track years teaching adults online at a community college and the ridiculous amount of learning she's done in all things education. With this unique background, she is also the rambunctious host of the Academics Mean Business Podcast and Community, which shares the journeys of other academics who have made the leap into entrepreneurship. If you are tired of setting for the hustle heavy lifestyle of the entrepreneur and are raising your hand to consistent income that DOESN'T require you to work crazy hours, I created a free class and saved a seat for you here: http://profitplanner.co/grow. This class goes over the 3-part profit plan system so you can run a business that allows you to be laptopless - where you can work when you WANT to, not because you HAVE to.
People make the transition to public speaking in many ways. Today's guest was a community college professor and used her teaching skills to add value to others through speaking. You'll learn a variety of lessons on the business of speaking as she shares her story.

Today, we're talking about the COST of pursuing your calling -- whether it's the pursuit of knowledge and mastery over an academic subject OR creative or artistic mastery. Dr. Lindsay Padilla and I go INNNN on the pressure of student debt. This week on the podcast, I met with my dear friend Dr. Lindsay Padilla to talk about something that both academics and creatives (and, like, 71% of Americans) can relate to: STUDENT LOAN DEBT. *insert crazy sound effect here* Lindsay and I jammed hard on what's SO screwed up about the academic system in the first place, including… The heartbreaking reality of being told “WHY study that? There's NO money in it…” How education struggles to keep up with technology (aka “The Culture Lag”) Being “tricked” into taking on debt with the promise of “making money someday” Why universities are scaling back teachers' hours and therefore pay, to the detriment of the student's experience Plus so much more… Lindsay is pretty incredible, and helps TONS of creatives and entrepreneurs become incredible teachers with her program Build A Better Beta. If you're curious and want to learn more about how she can help YOU with your course, you can follow Lindsay on ALL the socials (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook) at @Lindsaympadilla! Dr. Lindsay Padilla is a teaching + learning consultant. As an owner of many degrees, her experience as a sociology professor, and teaching adult learners online —She’s honored to pass on what she’s learned to trailblazing entrepreneurs who want to create digital courses. She now specializes in translating 1:1 client work experiences into signature courses, group programs + membership sites, as well as mapping out instructional content. How did you get into academia? She always knew she wanted to be a teacher. She kept following that path growing up. She worked up towards becoming a high school teacher. She started her teaching career by teaching eight graders while her friends were still partying in college. She got her first sociology class because her mentor gave this one class to her. She fell in love with sociology and realized the potential of sociology at a high school level. She decided to get a master’s degree in sociology. That put her on the path of graduate school. In her graduate program for sociology, she had a course called ‘Teaching Sociology’. It is very rare to have a teaching course in a grad school. Do you think our educational system can be limiting and we do not always need a college degree to something valuable in our lives? Lindsay thinks it’s a very complicated matter. As a sociologist, Lindsay gets to study about society, people, institutions and large mainstream patterns of our culture, their origin and how they impact us. The labor market is tied to the school system. She believes we have been stuck in very traditional ways of delivering education. We live in a credential society, which demands a degree to get certain jobs and unlock certain things in life. This is what we are told and this is what is only partially true. What made you transition out of academia and into entrepreneurship? Lindsay recently started a podcast in January called Academics mean business. She has been an entrepreneur for almost two years now. Two years ago in summers, she was getting paid by clients for helping them create courses. She has been teaching online for the past six to seven years. She was always the professor on campus who was known for conducting online meetings with her students. She had a lot to share with entrepreneurs starting online programs around teaching and learning. She helped various clients with it. She saw the potential of transitioning from academia to entrepreneurship. Lindsay felt she could have a greater impact on people around her if she became an entrepreneur. What do you think makes a good teacher? Lindsay believes everyone is a teacher. Lindsay believes it is something very common among all human beings. We teach our children, pass knowledge on to our friends and family. Teaching is about an outcome. As a teacher, one needs to set by themselves certain goals that they can help an individual or a group of people achieve through their teachings. Good teaching comes from the inner self of the teacher. A teacher needs to be aligned with the knowledge he or she intends to share. Lindsay says there is a lot of impostor syndrome in the realm of online teaching. Many people doubt if the online courses and online teachers can actually help others and if their knowledge itself is self-sufficient. This prevents a lot of good teachers to put up their courses online. Good teaching comes from being your true self in communicating what you know. Many teachers try to build an authority around themselves and it drains out all the excitement from learning. A lot of research has been carried around this issue and the results indicate that teachers who try to undermine students are responsible for creating an environment which diminishes learning and the power of education as well. Good teaching comes from interaction with students, listening to them, working on the feedback received from students and doing it better the next time. How do you make online learning experiential? We have to work with the medium that is transporting the knowledge. Online interaction can never be like a face-to-face interaction. When it comes to online education and the incorporation of experiential learning, a big part of learning is to motivate students to try out various things themselves that they can learn from the course. We need to make sure we have the required information in our online courses that can help students take their first action step and explore further on the basis of things they can learn from our courses. We need to support them and guide them in this phase of experimentation. What is the best advice you have ever been given? “Done is better than perfect. Everyone is doing the best they can”. It is more of a daily mantra for Lindsay. It helps her get going in her business and she knows the end result may not always be perfect but she needs to keep moving in her life, to strive for better outcomes no matter what. This also helps her to be compassionate with others because she believes people around her, in their limited capacity, try to do things in the best possible manner. How can we connect with you? The guest on today's show is Lindsay Padilla. Lindsay, who has two graduate degrees, used to work as a University Professor and is now an online Teaching and Learning Consultant. Last April, Lindsay was at lunch with some big influencers, after attending Todd Herman's Ninety Day Year. She was helping one of them with an upcoming launch and the person was so impressed with what Lindsay had to offer that she wanted to know why she wasn't teaching this to other people. This made so much sense to Lindsay and she realized then that she actually had many things to offer to people that could really benefit them, as entrepreneurs.
