Are you frustrated trying to grow your audience without breaking through to new listeners? I get it. You pour your heart into creating incredible content, but it feels like you're stuck talking to the same handful of listeners every week. GROW YOUR AUDIENCE WITH PODCAST INTERVIEWS In this episode of Podcast Talent Coach, I dive deep with Liam Austin, co-founder of Talks.Co, to reveal my favorite strategy for audience growth: landing podcast interviews. Liam will mention it during our conversation. You can get started for free with Talks.co at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/talks. To be effective, these guest spots need to put you in front of the right, ready-to-engage audience. Trust me, guesting isn't just a nice-to-have—it's a must if you want to build influence and turn your podcast into a thriving business. THE RIGHT PODCASTS Knowing which shows to target, and how to get booked as a guest, can make or break your growth strategy. Not all podcasts are created equal, and it's a mistake to guest on just any show. Liam explains why you don't need to focus on competitors; instead, seek out shows that complement what you do and speak directly to your ideal clients. For example, if you're a marketing expert for entrepreneurs, aim for podcasts that help entrepreneurs build businesses, not necessarily marketing podcasts. You want to get in front of listeners who actually want what you offer, not just more of what you do. GET THEM TO SAY "YES" But how do you get hosts to say yes, especially when they're inundated with generic, spammy pitches? You have to show up as the number one choice. That starts with hyper-relevant, personalized outreach—no copy-paste emails! Build genuine relationships by demonstrating you've listened to their show and understand their audience. And please, whatever you do, don't send cold pitches about unrelated topics. As I shared in this episode, nothing hurts more than getting pitched a cryptocurrency trader for a podcast about podcasting! LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS Getting booked is only half the battle. You also need a strategy to bring listeners from that appearance into your own world. Liam and I break down the power of value-driven call-to-actions. Always give immense value first. Then, invite listeners to take the next step with a compelling lead magnet. Whether it's a free checklist, a workshop, or a downloadable resource, the goal should be getting them onto your email list. This is where you have full control and can nurture real relationships beyond social platforms. GET STARTED Ready to put this into action? Check out Talks.co, the platform Liam founded to connect podcast guests and hosts quickly and efficiently. Create your (free!) speaker profile and discover shows actively seeking guests right now. If you're serious about growing your audience, it's time to move beyond waiting for listeners to find you. Get started: Use my affiliate link at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/talks to start for free. As always, if you want personal help refining your content, building relationships, and developing your own podcast growth plan, apply for a coaching call at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply. What kinds of questions do you ask your podcast guests? The most engaging podcast episodes—the ones that make for the best conversations and the best listening—are the ones that contain great stories. As the host, you're always aiming to draw all those details and deep disclosures from your guest. So why does getting the full picture sometimes feel like pulling teeth? Mary recently taught her nine-year-old daughter how asking more specific questions will get her the answers she wants, and that conversation prompted this episode's exploration. An open-ended question—the kind that requires a more thorough answer than “yes,” “no,” or some other short word or phrase—is always going to elicit a stronger response. In return, you as the host don't have to work as hard; your guest's fascinating story, the whole reason they're chatting with you, stands a much better chance of tumbling out of them with the passion every podcaster (and podcast listener) is looking for. Ask yourself these impactful interview-question questions: What are the best W5 question prompts to ask in your interview? How can you utilize storytelling statements to deliver more engaging episodes? What should you look for in past episodes to start asking better questions in the future? Transcript with Audio Description: [MUSIC IN - GHOSTHOOD FEATURING SARA AZRIEL “LET'S GO” BEGINS] MARY: How do you ask questions? I guess specifically on your podcast, maybe when you do interviews, how are those questions being asked? I know it's still quite a broad question, but have you ever gone back to your episodes, listen to them again to review how you have been asking questions? And if you want to get even more specific, I'm actually talking about open ended questions versus close ended questions. So today I'm going to explore those types of questions with you and show you how open ended questions can make your interviews and your podcast more enjoyable. Not just for you as a host, but maybe as a guest as well if you're on someone else's show, but more importantly for your listener. This episode actually stemmed from my conversation with my daughter. So, you know, lots of real life experience can come onto the podcast as well. And this idea of what it's like to pull stories from someone by asking them the different types of questions. So, how does your curiosity with these open ended questions play a significant role in your interviews? So there you go. The next generation of podcasters, through my daughter, is already teaching me about something that I can share with you on this very podcast. This is episode number 98 on the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. > MARY: Thank you so much for listening to the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice.
