Today we continue our discussion around gambling harm here is Australia. Both Zen and Kate chat about their knowledge and personal experience around gambling harm and the impact it is having on Australians. Gambling harm is continually brushed under the carpet as an addiction. It’s easy money for the government and I can only assume that’s why it isn’t addressed more urgently, however, the impact it is having on families and communities cannot be diminished. Today on the podcast we chat with two remarkable women who are helping to assist the community around gambling harm. Zen, is a social worker and counsellor for Turning point Australia. Her role is to assist clients who call or reach out for assistance with their gambling concerns. The statistics are clear; 27 million Australians and 32 billion was lost on gambling last year. Young men are the fastest growing demographic of gamblers. Kate bravely speaks around her own lived experience with gambling and the impact it has had on her life. She discusses how she no longer has shame around her gambling misuse disorder and discusses very frankly how we are being manipulated by companies to use pokies and online apps. The scary part is how young this is starting. By allowing our children to use gaming apps that win tokens, these apps (built by gambling online companies) are building neural pathways to Segue seamlessly from fun kids apps to gambling online apps. Dr Stephen spoke at a recent conference that I attended about being respectful of peoples' genders, transgender patients and how to navigate incorporating appropriate documentation in to your clinics. We chat about how best to start conversations, not to be afraid to ask valid, necessary medical questions and just do your best to be mindful and respectful. Apologise if you make an error. I am still navigating this new gender landscape and hope the information imparted by Dr Stephen will help you understand gender and gender nuances as it did me. Toni worked as the NUM at Bundaberg hospital back in 2003 when Jayant Patel was given the position of surgeon at the same hospital.Right from his first operating list, red flags started to show up. Patients were returning from theatre with major complications. One patient returned brain dead. She started correlating all the information and started approaching the director of nursing, medicine and finally the executive office of the hospital and they all chose not to do anything.Eventually she went to the member for Burnett and journalist Hedley Thomas and suddenly, there was a flurry of activity.Patel had relinquished his license to practice in the USA due to numerous litigations. Michael and Maddison are industry disruptors. They are known for the part they played in the Daniel Lanzer case, and have moved into the non-surgical cosmetic space. They are pushing for tighter regulations around advertising within the cosmetic arena as they view what is advertised as unethical and this in turn will cause patient harm.On this I agree that some have been doing the wrong thing, however, most of the practitioners only do the right thing by their patients and enhance their lives through self image improvement. This is an interesting podcast and gives you good for thought.Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/tendernessnursesSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Okay, maybe not 6 months. Amin left Iran 11 years ago. He paid a smuggler to get out Iran, then to Malaysia,Indonesia and finally on a boat to Australia. The wooden boat had holes in it, the engines stopped working, the smuggler fled the boat and they were left on their own.  To flee a country where your whole life is under threat takes immense bravery and courage.  No one would make this decision to be smuggled out of a country lightly. Amin shares these details with us. How he learnt English, works, has been married for the last 5 years and what his life looks like here in Australia. This is a fascinating podcast around the implications of leaving a country illegeally and the domino effect once that decision has been made. I hope you enjoy today's chat.
