This week I chat with Lindsey, a single mother of six, who bravely shares her journey from excessive drinking to recovery. In this conversation, Lindsay delves into the challenges of being a single mother and how she used alcohol as a coping mechanism, leading to a cycle of self-medication.Lindsey's story takes us through the chaos her addiction brought into her life and the profound impact on her six children. Despite being a single mother of six, Lindsey found herself in denial about her addiction until unmistakable signs and behaviours forced her to confront the truth. As Lindsey enters her "2nd Act," her story serves as a testament to the transformative power of recovery, demonstrating that even in the face of denial, hope, support, and resilience can pave the way for a brighter, sober future. Join me as Lindsey's story unfolds, highlighting the importance of seeking help and the possibility of a second chance at life. A trigger warning: this conversation delves into forms of addiction. As a 12 year old, Ruth loved to chat with her friends online but it wasn't long before a predator found and groomed her. This very quickly became a real life, sexually abusive relationship between a child and a full grown adult paedophile. We have spoken to a few chid abuse victims on this podcast but Ruth's memory of this time is so clear that we get a real insight into what 12 year old her was thinking and experiencing. We learn about the inspiration behind the dispensary's design and we hear about the struggle to start her business during COVID, and rejection in the medical profession because they "thought she was a drug dealer". We take a deep dive and learn more about the state of cannabis use in Australia, the importance of getting to know doctors and dispensaries, and the personalised nature of the industry. We chat about the different strains of cannabis, the effects they have on individuals, and how their dispensary specialises in understanding patients' needs and preferences. I hope you enjoyed season 10 of The Deep. Just a quick note to let you know that seasons will now be 8 episodes long. But not to worry, I'm reposting some of my absolute favourite episodes, like this one, so you'll never be short of something to listen to. Sandra is like a cat that has nine lives. There are so many chapters of this story we had to share it over two episodes.Sandra grew up as Peter and through his life he was many things: He became a father, a husband, a woman, a drag artist, a prostitute, a drug addict, a law abiding citizen, a married woman, one of Melbourne's high society, a business owner, a widow and a trauma cleaner. As you can imagine this is a hell of a ride. It is a story that has a lot of explicit and adult content. It is almost unbelievable that one person can fit so much into one lifetime but she did and it's fascinating.Content warning: this episode deals with prostitution, drugs and abuse. Another drug education episode! Today we are discussing Ketamine. Ketamine is normally used as an anaesthetic for medical purposes, however there has been an increase in recent years of people using the drug recreationally. We learn all about what ketamine is, how it affects people physically and mentally, and what the heck a K-hole is. Drugs affect everyone differently and ketamine is a highly unpredictable drug. Let's use harm minimisation to be aware of the risks and informed on the signs of overdose. *Trigger warning: drugs and misuse/abuse mentioned. Psychedelics. You're probably thinking about party drugs right now, but when used medicinally with proper supervision and alongside the correct therapies, drugs like psilocybin can be hugely successful at treating depression, PTSD and other mental health conditions.Tania DeJong went to the Netherlands to experience this treatment first hand, and she says it changed her life. Today I am discussing the case of missing 23-year-old Leah Peebles. In 2006 Leah moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico looking for a fresh start. But just a few weeks after she made the move, she disappeared. When her father, John Peebles, made the trip to New Mexico to search for her himself, he discovered a world of crime he'd never experienced before. Despite recognizing the danger he was putting himself in and receiving a death threat himself, he dug deeper into the world he was convinced his daughter was trapped in in hopes of bringing her home. Leah Peebles went missing from Albuquerque New Mexico on May 22nd, 2006 at the age of 23. She would be 38 years old as of recording this episode and might be going by the name Maya. She is a white female, 5'4', 105lbs, with blue eyes and brown hair that she cuts and colors a lot. She has a few tattoos including a scroll flower design on her upper back and a Celtic cross on her lower back. Anyone with information is urged to call the Albuquerque Police Department at 505-242-2677. Cannabis tax revenue and weed tourism would be of great economic benefit to South Australia, according to SA's Greens MLC Tammy Franks. Ms Franks plans to introduce legislation in SA's Parliament this week to legalise recreational use of cannabis in SA for adults, and to allow the cultivation of up to six plants at home. She joins Jennie Lenman in this podcast to discuss her pitch to make SA a region of “fine food, wine and weed from our clean green environment”. We look at what constitutes a standard drink and the public health recommendations in Australia about alcohol consumption to reduce the risk of harm. We discuss public health measures that are taken and could be taken to education the population about reducing the risk of harm associated with alcohol, particularly in relation to teenagers.Dr Ali's speaks to his area of expertise, alcohol as an addictive substance, including which people or groups in society are more vulnerable to alcohol addiction, how to recognise if you or someone you care about has a problematic relationship with alcohol and where to seek help.I put the “French paradox” (that small amounts of red wine may have cardio protective effects) to Dr Ali and he provides a considered and enlightening response.LINKS MENTIONED IN THE PODCASTDr Robert Ali - https://www.adelaide.edu.au/directory/robert.aliNational Health and Medical Research Council, Australian guidelines to reduce health risks from drinking alcohol - https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/health-advice/alcoholASSIST Plus (substance involvement screening test) - https://assistplus.com.auKnow your options (finding help for alcohol and other drug problems) - https://knowyouroptions.sa.gov.auTELEPHONE NUMBERS MENTIONED IN THE PODCASTNational Alcohol and Other Drug Hotline: 1800 250 015Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia: 1300 13 13 40HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE PODCASTPlease tell your friends about the podcast and share it with them.Follow me on Instagram @vibrant_lives_podcastFollow my Facebook page: @vibrantlivespodcastIf you could rate and review the podcast on iTunes, that would be super helpful.

It was serious. Today Fatz talks about where his mental illness started, how he spiralled and at what cost.Content warning: this episode discusses: suicide, drug abuse and sexual abuse. So, today is a bit different, were going to hear from two men, Nass and Lino. Both familiar with the struggle of mental health issues, rock bottoms and suicide.First we hear from Nass, a young father from the Gold Coast. Nass is Maori, works as a labourer, he's big, burly, tattooed and handsome. He doesn't fit the stereotype of someone that is fighting mental illness. And that's the point. There is no one type of man that fits a stereotype. Nass bravely shares his story with us today. Then we hear from Lino. Lino is the creator of Men's Medicine, a business that focuses on healing men through community, nature, breath and ritual based walks. Men like Nass have been deeply impacted by Lino and find real hope for the future. Lino shares with us the trauma that has led him to create a place for men to feel safe exploring their mental health.Content warning: this episode discusses: suicide, drug abuse and sexual abuse.
