When we consider the ongoing slaughter that is Gaza and the West's complicity, it's not the world leaders, East or West, who have captured our collective imagination – it's the ordinary people who have made the difference. It's the journalists, poets – the doctors and nurses that have helped the world see the atrocities of settler colonialism and its abject violence. Certainly, a defused media has given the world, possibly for the very first time, the ability to witness the horrors of Israel – but it is people like my guest today who have been able to articulate a narrative that rises above the deliberate propaganda that passes as commentary. Professor Ghassan Abu-Sittah is a multi-award-winning Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. He has worked in multiple war zones, including Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Gaza. Dr. Jimmy Sung doesn't see his work as a job, it's his vocation. When people visit him, they can expect a candid, unfiltered assessment of what's best for them, even if that means suggesting reversing past procedures or treatments. An early proponent of regenerative aesthetics, Dr. Sung views fat as a “treasure trove” and uses it everyday in his practice to not only replace volume, but also to repair tissue and improve the healing process. With unique expertise in wound healing and tissue engineering, Dr. Elizabeth Kiwanuka is highly experienced in the treatment and healing of scars after surgery or trauma. She loves applying her rich knowledge of wound healing to help her plastic surgery patients heal as aesthetically as possible. Dedicated to helping patients feel as good as they look after the procedures she delivers, Dr. Elizabeth Kiwanuka's philosophy is holistic plastic surgery. She meets with her patients long before surgery to craft nutrition plans, fitness programs, and muscle toning treatments to prepare for surgery and promote healthier recovery. Her relationship with each patient continues long after surgery as she focuses on aftercare as much as the surgery itself, prioritizing function, longevity, and healing as much as the aesthetic result. As a female-focused practice, Dr. Kiwanuka ensures visits with her are a time of relaxation, self-care, and mindfulness rather than a doctor's visit. Dr. Taylor DeBusk has a fine understanding of facial anatomy from the skin down to the nerves, blood vessels, and bones from his training in head and neck surgery. As a facial plastic surgeon reconstructing faces after removing skin cancer and reanimating faces of patients with facial paralysis gave him a next level understanding of how to help patients love what they see in the mirror while maintaining function. With a deep understanding of the nose's delicate structures and anatomy, Dr. DeBusk loves giving patients noses that are both beautiful and functional. His head and neck surgery background solidified his ability to rebuild the structural framework and contour of the nose during revision rhinoplasty.Dr. DeBusk looks forward to seeing his patients when they come back and keeps in close contact throughout their recovery. He tells his rhinoplasty patients they are “stuck with him for at least 12 months” because he checks in consistently throughout the healing process.Patients feel comfortable with Dr. DeBusk because while he has very high expectations for the outcomes he delivers, he remains easy-going and relaxed throughout every step of their aesthetic journey. On this week's episode of Kathryn For Real, Kathryn interviews Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Kevin Brenner, MD and Holistic Beauty Coach, Amanda Porta, to discuss Breast Implant Illness. Dr. Brenner performs all types of plastic surgery and has become widely known for his primary and revision breast surgery. As most of you know, Kathryn became severely ill from her breast implants. After doing numerous shows, documentaries, magazine interviews and podcasts, women (and some men) have reached out to her seeking answers to questions from “How do I know my implants are making me sick?” to “Do you know a Dr that is experienced in explanting and knows to remove the capsule?” Kathryn was excited when Amanda reached out to her after she heard her breast implant story on The Kathryn For Real podcast. She's a patient advocate at Dr Brenner's office for women dealing with Breast Implant Illness. After experiencing the illness herself, she has helped thousands of women detox, and heal through their own explant journeys. Kathryn's goal in their interview was to ask the questions to get the answers you would want to know.
