Send us a textIn this episode of Financial Planner Life, we are joined by Emma Hall, Chartered Financial Planner of the Year, who shares her career journey through a lens focused on workplace flexibility, women's wellbeing support, and mental health policies - and how these are essential for creating a thriving and resilient firm. For women in financial planning, these are not just HR topics—they directly affect retention, career progression, and overall workplace culture. With Emma's real-world experience and actionable insights, this conversation goes beyond the surface to address current gaps in support systems within the financial planning profession.Emma highlights the increasing demand for flexible work arrangements, especially as more professionals seek a balance between their personal lives and high-pressure careers. However, Emma makes a critical distinction: flexibility must be paired with meaningful in-office interactions, particularly for those new to the field. Firms need to foster an environment where both experienced professionals and emerging talent can grow. The key takeaway? Companies that fail to offer flexibility risk losing top-tier talent, but those that embrace it, paired with strong onboarding and mentoring systems, will have a competitive edge.We also delve into often-overlooked but critical issues like menopause and mental health in the workplace. Menopause affects multitudes of women in the workforce, yet few financial planning firms have policies in place to support women during this stage of life. Emma's advocacy brings attention to the need for real-time mental health resources and open conversations about life events that impact professional performance. Emma's message is clear: businesses that prioritize well-being—by offering comprehensive mental health policies and menopause support—create not only a more inclusive culture but also a more sustainable one. Follow world-record breaking explorer George Bullard on a world-first kayak from Greenland to Scotland across one of the most dangerous stretches of water on the planet. No one thought they could do it. Most people assumed they would die trying – and they nearly did, more than once. But, despite the odds, over six weeks, George and his expedition partner Ollie Hicks, crossed 1,200-miles of open ocean from the edge of the Greenland Ice Cap to Iceland, then on to the Faroe Islands, and from there to the north Scottish shore. Paddling through the night, sleeping out in the sinister dark of the polar ocean, battling storms, exhaustion and raging seas – this is the story of the most dangerous kayak expedition ever undertaken. But it’s more than that too. Three hundred years ago a mysterious figure in a strange shaped canoe washed up on the coast of Aberdeen, in northeast Scotland. He was alive, barely. No one knew who he was, where he came from, what language he spoke, and he died a few days later before anyone could find out. Since then, the myth of the ‘Finmen’ has continued to grow. The historical records describe his clothing as similar to what we now know as hailing from Inuit culture. But it seemed impossible. Did a Greenlandic fisherman cross the North Atlantic Ocean, 300 years ago, on nothing more than a seal-skin canoe? By undertaking this journey, George and Ollie set out to unearth the truth behind the mystery. If they could do it, perhaps the myth was true. Get ready for the Voyage of the Finmen. Highlights include:· Kayak across one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the world, a section of the North Atlantic between Iceland and Scotland, known as the ‘Devil’s Dancefloor’ because of the size of the waves and storms· Paddle through the midnight sun from Greenland to Iceland, and then 450-miles around the crocodile teeth of the rugged fjords and soaring cliffs of North Icelandic coastline, camping out on wild beaches along the way· Listen to one of the craziest rescue and survival stories you will ever hear· Find out what happens when George and Ollie are hit by an enormous hurricane 60-miles off the Scottish coast· Be inspired by George’s love and enthusiasm for the outdoors and adventure. He is one of the UK’s most sought-after motivational speakers and will fire you up to embark on your next adventure wherever that may beWho’s the Guest?George Bullard is a world record-breaking explorer, endurance athlete and motivational speaker. To date he has covered more than 2,000 miles on foot in the polar regions (including the longest unsupported polar journey in history, at just age 19) and completed countless extraordinary expeditions around the world. Lily Rabe’s star power skyrocketed when American Horror Story turned into an epic phenomenon on launch back in 2011. She continues to excel in that series, but has also been quite busy adding more titles to her resume with the most recent additions being HBO’s The Undoing and the Amazon’s latest, Tell Me Your Secrets. Rabe headlines the show playing Karen Miller, a woman who’s arrested with her boyfriend Kit (Xavier Samuel) for the role she played in the murders he committed. At the start of the series, she’s out of jail and part of the Witness Protection Program, assuming the name Emma Hall. While trying to lay low and steer clear of trouble, Emma is also challenged to figure out what really happened to one of Kit’s victims, an incident she claims she can’t remember. Whether you’ve seen all of AHS, The Undoing and Tell Me Your Secrets or just a single credit on Rabe’s resume, I’m willing to bet you already know she’s often a standout in whatever show she’s in. But if you’re only familiar with Rabe’s work in TV, it’s time to get a better understanding of what she’s really accomplished over the years on this episode of Collider Ladies Night, because Rabe’s achievements are especially robust and her aspirations will be mighty exciting to track as her star continues to grow. Check out this edition of Ladies Night to hear all about Rabe's experience getting her SAG card on Mona Lisa Smile, her choice to focus on theater after graduating college, how she joined the American Horror Story ensemble, why she chose to give up her role in The Hunger Games film franchise, why she absolutely had to do Tell Me Your Secrets and so much more! I just wanted to do a house keeping episode to let you know what to expect in this season. We are half way through the mini series on End of Life Care and had 'recognising the dying phase' with Dr Emma Hall and 'oncological emergencies' with Merel a cancer clincial nurse specialist. We have two more instalments of EOLC and these are around advanced neurological disease with Diane Laverty and Grief and bereavement with Julia Samuel MBE. Caroline Philips has done a fantastic job at cataloging some of these essential conversations and really helping us appreciate some of the deeper facets of end of life care. We will have some skill based episodes with myself and Nick Brown. These are looking at the skills undertaken by clinicians and everything that the text books don’t tell you around experiential learning and reflections of performing these on a daily/weekly basis - we will look at IO, splintage, intubation, IV access and other skills. We will look at pain management with a pain specialist and some of the types and methods of acute and chronic pain management that we might face in the pre-hospital environment. We will do a deep dive into one of the prolific drugs in society and that we interact with on a daily basis - that of alcohol. We will look at chronic alcoholism and how it changes physiology. We will also look at acute intoxication and why these patients can be so difficult to look after. We will start with a mini case review series as well - dissecting some challenging cases and what we can learn from these cases. We will also look at urgent care with a GP and urgent care advanced paramedic in more detail and some of the subtitles that we can learn to pick up as clinicians. Finally we will look at some of the diverse range of pre-hospital career options that are available for clinicians (paramedics, doctors and nurses) in the current climate. We hope you enjoy the season.
In this episode Caroline Phillips hosts Dr Emma Hall, Palliative Care Consultant and discusses the signs of the final few days and hours of life. We discuss the challenges of recognising the dying phase, the importance of shared decision making and the positive aspects of shared learning between prehospital and palliative care professionals. This is part of a mini series on the Pre-hospital Care Podcast where we will start to look into topics in more depth and involve some of the subject specialists to share their experience. We hope you enjoy the episode. Further reading: Kathryn Mannix – With the End in Mind Oxford Handbook of Palliative Medicine (2019) AACE JRCALC Clinical Guidelines (2019) – End of Life Care
