Australia's wool sector is still feeling the pinch. There's no doubt the last couple of years have been challenging, with recent decile two and three prices making it hard for many businesses to stay afloat. But despite these obstacles, the Swales of Woodlands set an example of resilience. They're carrying 150 years of family heritage into the future, proving that even in the face of adversity, there are opportunities to adapt and thrive.   This week, I'm joined by Jamie & Will Swales both proud Platinum Mastermind Alumni from Woodlands, a 4,265 ha merino operation 55 km west of Armidale in NSW's New England. This year marks 150 years of their family farming this property, with children Will, Georgia and Angus representing the sixth generation. Congratulations to Jamie, Angela, and their family on this incredible milestone.   In this conversation, we dig deep into: The significance of 150 years of family farming at Woodlands, discussing how the farm has evolved and the connection to family heritage. The current state of the wool industry, including the impact of falling production, shifts in global demand and the disconnect between auction room price signals and actual consumer uptake. Strategic responses to tough times, including pivoting to cattle during drought periods and focusing on merino genetics to improve wool production. The industry's need for action on mulesing, with Jamie and Will stressing the importance of addressing animal welfare practices and marketing efforts to meet consumer expectations and boost demand. Will also shares his personal journey into the wool export industry through Endeavour Wool Exports, a company that's become one of Australia's largest wool exporters in just a few short years, now exporting around 220,000 bales annually. Will's role at Endeavour involves helping farmers navigate the export process and connecting them to the global market, offering direct-to-farm services and auction support. You can learn more about Endeavour Wool Exports by visiting their website here or by emailing Will directly at william.s@ewexports.com.au.   Whether you're a wool grower, a farmer considering merino, or someone keen to understand what levers can shift an entire industry, this episode is for you. BONUS: Get the exclusive! Hutch catches up with Will Swales 10 days later about his recent trip to China, where he joined a group of young wool producers to tour processing mills. Will shares his insights into the industry's future, with mills investing in state-of-the-art machinery and expanding production. He also talks about advocating for Australian wool growers at the Nanjing Wool Market Conference, highlighting the need for price adjustments as production continues to decline. Will's message seemed to resonate, with the wool market rallying soon after. A huge thanks to Jamie & Will for sharing their industry knowledge and practical insights into sustainable farming, wool genetics, and navigating global market challenges. Your experience and forward-thinking approach are invaluable to anyone looking to understand where the wool sector is heading and how they can adapt for the future. Till next time, Jeremy Hutchings & the Farm Owners Academy Team P.S. If you're feeling the pressure of navigating industry challenges like falling wool prices, shifting demand, or tough times on the farm, the 2026 TOP Producers Workshop is tailored to help you tackle these hurdles head-on. We've created this workshop to address the unique challenges farmers like you face, so you can stay ahead in the game. Secure your spot here.

In this episode, I'm joined by clinical psychologist, Shannon A. Swales. Shannon, the author ofNothing Left to Give and host of the Midlife Reclaimed podcast, specialises in burnout prevention and recovery, having navigated her own experience of midlife burnout. We get honest about a question we both had to face: when is "just tired" actually something more? Shannon opens up about the devastating signs she initially missed. She shares how her burnout led to losing her identity as a psychologist and carrying a heavy burden of shame, believing she should have known better. This is a must-listen if you've ever felt that you have "nothing left to give" but are ready to find a different way forward. Shannon's story is a powerful reminder that recovery is a "life overhaul" and that living in alignment with your own energy is the key to creating a sustainable life and business.   Links to Shannon A. In this conversation, Phil and Tom Swales (Physiotherapist and strength coach) explore the intricacies of body movement, protection, and rehabilitation through the lens of the AMT (Advanced Movement Therapy) system. They discuss how adventure educators can better protect their bodies from the effects of repetitive strain due to movement such as belaying. Tom shares his personal journey of recovery from a severe illness, emphasizing the importance of foundational movement patterns and the body's ability to adapt and heal. The conversation highlights the necessity of teaching movement through experience and the value of lifelong learning in maintaining physical health.   The AMT system was developed to address personal challenges in physical therapy. Understanding the psychology and biology of movement is crucial for effective therapy. Assessment should focus on identifying the root causes of movement issues. Proactive approaches in therapy lead to better long-term outcomes. Teaching movement through experience enhances understanding and retention. Personal experiences can reinforce the principles of movement and recovery. Individualized care is essential for effective rehabilitation. The body has an innate ability to reorganize and heal itself with the right guidance. Complicated explanations can hinder understanding; simplicity is key. Lifelong learning and adaptation are vital for maintaining physical health. Lament & Hope: Prayers & Teaching for Justice and Peace

Send us a textwords Rev'd Jon SwalesDrill, baby, drill—  strange words,  a chant from a strange man  in a strange world.  Forests burn,  their ancient voices smothered in smoke.  Seas swell,  lapping at the bones of drowned cities.  The air thickens,  heavy with the weight of loss.  And yet the President speaks,  as if the earth were not already broken,  as if the fire were not already here.  A voice of denial,  slick with crude promises,  slick with something darker.  He smiles,  as though the earth were endless,  as though the air were not heavy  with the weight of a thousand unheard warnings.  Drill , baby, drill—  fuel for the engines,  fuel for the empire,  fuel for the end.  A strange hopium,  sweet and sickening,  whispered into ears too weary to resist.  But the wind remembers.  The oceans remember.  The earth groans beneath  each hollow pledge,  each drilling rig,  each hand raised in defiance of the storm.  He builds babels of oil,  shadows stretching  across scorched plains.  He laughs,  and somewhere,  ice falls,  rivers vanish,  and the sky weeps  for what was lost.  Drill, baby, drill!Again and again,  as if the earth will not break,  as if the children will not choke,  as if tomorrow is promised.- Swales, 2025

Ed Swales is an ex-soldier/security specialist and is a life-long blue collar hunting enthusiast from the Northern England countryside. The traditional hunting method of the rural country individual in the english countryside is running dogs to catch rabbits and hares for the pot. Ed Swales is no different. A lifelong dog hunter, Ed is focused right now on a film from his company, Hunting Kind, called Lurchers - a very specific breed of dog that could be part whippet, part greyhound, part terrier, dependent on what the individuals is looking for in a hunting dog. Like any type of dog hunting anywhere in the world, the Lurchers have been politiced essentially out of existence. There is a rich narrative of hunting and hunting tradition in the British countryside, and the lurchers are very much a part of the narrative of it all - one could almost argue that they are the rural foundation of hunting in the United Kingdom. Episode Synopsis: Mina and Lucy attend the funeral of the Captain of the Demeter from their usual seat in the church yard. Earlier that day in that same seat, the old captain, Mr. Swales, was found dead, having experienced a fright and broken his neck. Mina and Lucy are upset by a scene that occurs when an old sailor disciplines his dog for not coming when called. Mina fears that the upsetting details of the day will affect Lucy's sleepwalking. Mina attempts to tire Lucy beyond sleepwalking by taking her out for tea and they laugh about having been startled by cows on their way. When they returned home exhausted, Mrs. Westenra had invited a curate from the clergy for supper, and Lucy and Mina struggle to stay awake. Dracula by Bram Stoker chapter 6, narrated by Isaac BirchallMina and Lucy meet in Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. It is a very picturesque town with a beautiful old red roofs and a ruined abbey which was sacked by the Danes. There is however a newer church with a graveyard that looks out onto the harbour. There are two lighthouses that overlook the sea that protect the incoming boats from the green reef which could easily wreck any ship that maybe fall onto them. Mina meets an old sailor who is near on a hundred years old with a very thick accent who Mina wants to interrogate with questions about the superstitions of the area. The following day, both Mina and Lucy meet with the old man. He tells her that all of the ghost stories are nothing but nonsense that was invented to scare people or persuade them to do things that they usually wouldn't. He also tells the two that the majority of graves are empty, the majority lost at sea, so there aren't any bodies to make ghosts of.  They continue to discuss the grave with the old man until late into the evening when he runs off home where his daughter is waiting for him with supper.  After he leaves the two discuss Lucy's upcoming marriage and it makes Mina very sad as she has not heard from Johnathan for a month.Dr Seward writes more on Renfield, his lunatic patient. He notes that Renfield loves animals, and that he collects flies, using some of his dinner rations to catch them. Renfield disgusts Seward quite a lot by eating flies and spiders. After a few days, Seward is confused again as it seems that Renfield has gotten himself a sparrow, then a few days later a whole colony of birds. Renfield then asks for a kitten, and Seward really starts to fear the man, a truly homicidal maniac. The next day, Seward visits Renfield again, and finds him laying sugar of the windowsill looking to catch flies. The birds are gone, and when Seward asks what happened, Renfield replies that they flew away, but there are several feathers about the room, and a drop of blood on the pillow.  Seward concludes that Renfield is eating his pets, and longs to test Renfield and see how far he would go, but knows that it would be frowned upon by his peers.Mina Murray again continues her journal. She writes that she is unhappy about Lucy and Johnathan.  She eventually receives a forwarded letter from Johnathan's boss saying that he is about to start for home, but the letter seems very un-Johnathan-like.  Lucy has also started sleepwalking again, and Lucy's mother implores Mina to help Lucy by locking the door to their room every night so that she does not go outside in a sleeping state.  As the days go by, there is still no news from Johnathan and Mina become the more and more uneasy. A week later there is still no sign from Johnathan, and Lucy's sleep walking is getting worse. A few days go by, and a great storm starts looming over the sea, great clouds almost black overhead, and all of the fishing boats hurry back into the harbour for shelter. Mr Swales greets Mina on the cliffside, and he apologises for his behaviour of the previous couple of days, and excuses himself by saying that he fears that the reaper is coming for him, and that he just needs to make light of the situation. He then gets up from his seat, and wanders off.Get SurfShark and protect yourself online todaySupport the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads
