On today's podcast we meet up with Brook Sarson from CatchingH2O. We followed Brook as she took a passel of learners and UCSD's Director of the Bioregional Center, Keith Pezzoli, PhD, on a tour of a greywater and rain catchment project that her company had recently installed. Water management is a favorite topic for us here at Backyard Green Films. With efforts like these, even if April brings few showers, we still have a chance at May flowers. Send us a textwords Rev'd Jon SwalesDrill, baby, drill— strange words, a chant from a strange man in a strange world. Forests burn, their ancient voices smothered in smoke. Seas swell, lapping at the bones of drowned cities. The air thickens, heavy with the weight of loss. And yet the President speaks, as if the earth were not already broken, as if the fire were not already here. A voice of denial, slick with crude promises, slick with something darker. He smiles, as though the earth were endless, as though the air were not heavy with the weight of a thousand unheard warnings. Drill , baby, drill— fuel for the engines, fuel for the empire, fuel for the end. A strange hopium, sweet and sickening, whispered into ears too weary to resist. But the wind remembers. The oceans remember. The earth groans beneath each hollow pledge, each drilling rig, each hand raised in defiance of the storm. He builds babels of oil, shadows stretching across scorched plains. He laughs, and somewhere, ice falls, rivers vanish, and the sky weeps for what was lost. Drill, baby, drill!Again and again, as if the earth will not break, as if the children will not choke, as if tomorrow is promised.- Swales, 2025
Send us a textWords- Jon SwalesMusic: Chris Sayburnwww.cruciformjustice.comHope is not a calculation, not a tally of gains or losses, but the ache of a heart stretched toward the horizon, a whisper of light breaking through the veil of the now. It does not linger in stillness, passive as shadows gather, nor wither into wishing, an empty hand grasping at air. Hope breathes— and in its breath, a spark becomes a flame, warming the coldest night. Hope refuses to yield, to let evil speak the final word. It stands defiant against despair, a protest against what-is, a midwife to the not-yet-born. There is a restlessness in this hope, a holy disquiet, a stirring revolution that will not let us sleep. It has seen the dawn, and in its light, the future world shimmers, not with the dull hues of habit, nor the dark chimes of business as usual, but with the effervescence of the possible. Hope is not a calculation, not a tally of gains or losses, but the ache of the heart, peering through a veil, longing for the day—face to face, when every tear will be wiped away.- Swales , 2025

Few things are steeped in as much pageantry and tradition as a proper English fox hunt. However, England banned fox hunting with hounds in the early 2000s. Further infringement on hunting rights in the U.K. followed suit. Finally, English sportsmen and houndsmen have formed a united front to try and take back their way of [...]
Ed Swales is an ex-soldier/security specialist and is a life-long blue collar hunting enthusiast from the Northern England countryside. The traditional hunting method of the rural country individual in the english countryside is running dogs to catch rabbits and hares for the pot. Ed Swales is no different. A lifelong dog hunter, Ed is focused right now on a film from his company, Hunting Kind, called Lurchers - a very specific breed of dog that could be part whippet, part greyhound, part terrier, dependent on what the individuals is looking for in a hunting dog. Like any type of dog hunting anywhere in the world, the Lurchers have been politiced essentially out of existence. There is a rich narrative of hunting and hunting tradition in the British countryside, and the lurchers are very much a part of the narrative of it all - one could almost argue that they are the rural foundation of hunting in the United Kingdom. Episode Synopsis: Mina and Lucy visit with the old fishermen in the churchyard. Mr. Swales entertains the lot of them with tales of the men whose names are listed on the surrounding tombstones. He says that the men are either lost at sea, and not in their so-called graves, or that the nature of their lives and deaths have been dramatically romanticized. Mina returns to the graveyard in the evening and laments that she hasn't heard from her fiance, Jonathan, in a month. Fog has closed in on the Russian schooner, and the ship hasn't enough manpower to work the sails. They hope to encounter another ship, but none appear. Dracula by Bram Stoker chapter 6, narrated by Isaac BirchallMina and Lucy meet in Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. It is a very picturesque town with a beautiful old red roofs and a ruined abbey which was sacked by the Danes. There is however a newer church with a graveyard that looks out onto the harbour. There are two lighthouses that overlook the sea that protect the incoming boats from the green reef which could easily wreck any ship that maybe fall onto them. Mina meets an old sailor who is near on a hundred years old with a very thick accent who Mina wants to interrogate with questions about the superstitions of the area. The following day, both Mina and Lucy meet with the old man. He tells her that all of the ghost stories are nothing but nonsense that was invented to scare people or persuade them to do things that they usually wouldn't. He also tells the two that the majority of graves are empty, the majority lost at sea, so there aren't any bodies to make ghosts of. They continue to discuss the grave with the old man until late into the evening when he runs off home where his daughter is waiting for him with supper. After he leaves the two discuss Lucy's upcoming marriage and it makes Mina very sad as she has not heard from Johnathan for a month.Dr Seward writes more on Renfield, his lunatic patient. He notes that Renfield loves animals, and that he collects flies, using some of his dinner rations to catch them. Renfield disgusts Seward quite a lot by eating flies and spiders. After a few days, Seward is confused again as it seems that Renfield has gotten himself a sparrow, then a few days later a whole colony of birds. Renfield then asks for a kitten, and Seward really starts to fear the man, a truly homicidal maniac. The next day, Seward visits Renfield again, and finds him laying sugar of the windowsill looking to catch flies. The birds are gone, and when Seward asks what happened, Renfield replies that they flew away, but there are several feathers about the room, and a drop of blood on the pillow. Seward concludes that Renfield is eating his pets, and longs to test Renfield and see how far he would go, but knows that it would be frowned upon by his peers.Mina Murray again continues her journal. She writes that she is unhappy about Lucy and Johnathan. She eventually receives a forwarded letter from Johnathan's boss saying that he is about to start for home, but the letter seems very un-Johnathan-like. Lucy has also started sleepwalking again, and Lucy's mother implores Mina to help Lucy by locking the door to their room every night so that she does not go outside in a sleeping state. As the days go by, there is still no news from Johnathan and Mina become the more and more uneasy. A week later there is still no sign from Johnathan, and Lucy's sleep walking is getting worse. A few days go by, and a great storm starts looming over the sea, great clouds almost black overhead, and all of the fishing boats hurry back into the harbour for shelter. Mr Swales greets Mina on the cliffside, and he apologises for his behaviour of the previous couple of days, and excuses himself by saying that he fears that the reaper is coming for him, and that he just needs to make light of the situation. He then gets up from his seat, and wanders off.Get SurfShark and protect yourself online todaySupport the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Running has been a double-edged sword for David Swales. He first took up the sport in an attempt to counter type 2 diabetes, but it was after sprinting to the finish in a 10km race that he had his stroke. It has left him facing daily challenges, all of which are chronicled with striking honesty in his blog, 'It doesn't get easier, you just get stronger'. David has a fascinating relationship with his stroke, refusing to beaten by it and using it to achieve faster times and longer distances, including completing the actual London Marathon once and its virtual version twice - including on Sunday. Running Tales spoke to him about everything from why he doesn't set out to be an inspiration to knowing every tree stump and trip hazard on his home parkrun... ---------------------------------- If you like this episode please consider donating to help us keep going: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/stepforward The music in this podcast is: "Fearless First" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
