The S.A.S. now tell their story of what really happened in Afghanistan and Iraq. Featuring exclusive, never-before-seen interviews with officers and soldiers of the S.A.S. As Prime Ministers Rudd, Howard, and Abbott tell for the first time what they knew, and the brave pilots of the American Army reveal what they saw. After completing basic training and Infantry IET's he went to the AIT program at Holdsworthy, then on to Commando selection in 2014. On this week's podcast we speak with former 4RAR Commando / SASR Veteran Jordan McCallum. Jordan served 19 years within the Australian Army, starting as an infantryman and first deploying to East Timor in 2003 with the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment. Shortly after returning he passed the Special Forces (SF) barrier test for 2nd Commando Regiment (originally 4RAR) getting his first taste of SF. Jordan spent six years at the 2nd Commando Regt (2 Cdo) and deployed twice to Afghanistan within Special Operations Task Group (SOTG). Both trips were life changing for Jordan in many ways and only grew his appetite for Special Operations. He also served two rotations of TAG-East on Domestic Counter Terrorism Duties (DCT). During this time, he conducted numerous Personal Security Detachments (PSD) to the Middle East providing protection for the Minister for Defence, CJOPS, and CDF. This experience gained was pivotal, and his time spent at 2Cdo was cherished, and it was extremely hard to leave the unit behind in 2009. In 2009, Jordan attempted and passed the elite Special Air Service Regiments (SASR) Selection Course and was chosen to begin training. Over the following 18 months he qualified to become a member of the elite SASR, earning his Sandy Beret. He spent 6 years within the unit, deploying another two times to Afghanistan and another rotation within DCT, this time within TAG-West. Jordan's time serving within the SASR was unfortunately, cut short due to burnout and physical injuries. It was at this point that was the hardest decision to date to leave the SASR after so much blood, sweat and tears. Jordan spent two years posted to the 16th Royal Western Australian Regiment (RWAR) on a low tempo posting, teaching Army Reserves basic soldering skills and running short courses for their development. His final three years within Defence was with the 1st Intelligence Battalion involved within some specialist roles. This is where he discharged in 2020 Presenter: Adam Blum Guest: Jordan McCallum Editor: Kyle Watkins Investigative Consultant: Adam Holloway

'I had seen dozens of people die horrible deaths ... This time was different. This time it was a friend of mine dying in the dirt in front of me, and it was my job to save him.' Dan Pronk is the author of three bestselling books, a regular keynote speaker, and the resident medic on the hit TV Show, SAS Australia. After failing dismally in his first career dream of being a professional triathlete, he studied medicine on an army scholarship. Upon qualifying as a doctor, he passed the SASR selection course and served five years in Special Operations, including four tours of Afghanistan with 100+ combat missions. Learn more about Dan Pronk During his years with Army Special Operations, Dan Pronk had the unique opportunity to treat dozens of gunshot wounds. In his memoir, Pronk describes the highs and lows of his military-medical career, with the real toll they took on his mental health and family life. He writes about the burden of saving - and failing to save - friends and comrades, the feelings of helplessness and despair that haunted me, and the journey back to a meaningful and fulfilling civilian life. The Story Shared: Dr. Dan Pronk shared his story of developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how transitioning from the military to civilian life broke down his resilience. A powerful account of a seemingly strong alpha male who operated in the Special Forces broke down upon discharge. About Dr. Dan Pronk: Dr. Dan Pronk studied medicine on an Australian Army scholarship. After passing the gruelling SAS selection course, he served on over 100 combat missions in Afghanistan as a frontline special forces combat doctor. His casualties were fellow SAS soldiers, commandos, local civilians, and even the enemy. The thrill of adventure and the challenges of battlefield medicine gave me a sense of purpose in testing his skills to the limits. But the despair of being helpless to save his friends in their final moments haunted him. Career Highlights: → Commendation for Distinguished Service (for combat actions) → NATO Special Operations Forces Medical Expert Panel Member → Successfully completed SASR selection and supported multiple courses. Expertise: → Building and maintaining robust resilience. → Medical response in high-threat environments. → Transition from the military, law enforcement, and first responder roles. oining me for this week's podcast is recently retired Australian SASR Operator Andrew White. White served for nearly 30 years in two different armies. He began his career in the British infantry with deployments to various areas of the world. White was part of the initial invasion of Iraq and would deploy there three times. Due to an issue with his command after his third deployment to Iraq, he transferred to the Australian Army. He passed selection into the Australian Special Air Service Regiment, where he spent the remainder of his career with multiple combat deployments. White was on the operation where SASR Trooper Jason Brown was tragically killed in Afghanistan. He illuminates the skill and courage under fire displayed by his troop to recover Brown. A few members of the Australian Special Forces are accused of committing war crimes in Afghanistan. The situation has been very controversial, and we discussed this in detail. We talked about his experiences in Afghanistan, and Iraq, working as a dog handler, and his advocacy for those SASR Operators accused of war crimes. Plus more. Tune in. Dan Cooper Masters in Sport Science, PHD Student, Former SASR- Do You Have The Resources Available To Solve The Problem In Front Of You? Today I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dan Cooper- a Man of Extremes. So much so, that one of his spare time endeavours saw him single handedly walk 1000 miles across Alaska, on foot, pulling his pulk behind him. He is a 22 yr military veteran, 18 years of which was with SASR, Australia's tier one Special Forces Unit. Dan was open to sharing his knowledge gained from his studies, his Special Forces experience and his time contributing to the Human Performance Cell at SASR. He closely studies how people respond under fear, and his answers on this, and the psycho-biological model of fatigue will surprise and help you do better in any field. We spoke about females entering into Special Forces, Executive Performance, Toughness and Resilience, Stress Inoculation and Cognitive Perception. Dan stated that Sleep, Nutrition and Movement are the 3 keys to resilience and we spoke about teenagers being undernourished, sleep deprived and spending so much time on devices that de-evolution is occurring. SO as always with Special Forces types, we pushed on and achieved the mission objective ( Sorry Clint) and it turned out to be an amazing show. We spoke about how Special Forces skills can carry over to everyday life and self defence. The differences and similarities between the units they have all worked for, and worked alongside. Pat served with the US Green Berets, Served in the Cold War in Berlin and Soviet Germany and then on to 12 yrs in Delta Force and finished the Sergeants Major Academy. Joe served in the NZ Army, Passed NZSAS Selection and Cycle of training. He then served with 4 RAR Commandos and went on to pass Australian SAS Selection and served with them for 5 yrs. They speak with such wisdom and humility and I am sure you will be surprised at their openness. From Seal Team 6, Ranger Battalion, FBI HRT, British SAS, US Airforce JTAC to name a few- they have worked with them all. Watch out for the middle of. the show where I may be the only person who has stumped Pat with a question!! It is hilarious. This show is a rare insight into the mindset of former Special Forces Operators and how we are currently using our knowledge, training and skills to help others, ourselves, and our loved ones. In Ben and Tim's book The Resilience Shield, they refer to Kev Toonen as a ‘superstar Army PTI (Physical Training Instructor)' - and certainly when they first met him, that's exactly what Kev was – a thought leader in the development of special operations physical capability, who helped evolved SAS training methodologies, as well as prepare the amazing Monika Georgieva (see Season 2 Episode 3 for more on Mon!) for her pioneering attempts at the SAS selection course. Since that time, Kev has taken his passion and knowledge for human performance to clients ranging from some of Australia's most beautiful and recognisable celebrities to elite sporting teams. In this episode, Kev talks to what he learnt from his military service, how he saw the military approach to physical training change over the years and what he currently considers the key requirements for optimising the human body. In this second part of a special double episode, Ben and Tim chat to Kev about helping Mon prepare for SASR selection and then his transition out of uniform into the much more beautiful world of celebrities, models and professional sportspeople, including his work with Candice Warner prior to her appearance on SAS Australia. 1:30 On Monika Georgieva's workup to being the first female to attempt SASR selection 3:00 The significance of the infamous 3.2km webbing run – and why it's such an important component of SASR selection 5:30 …and why this was a particularly difficult test for Mon 11:00 Mind-body connection, how it impacts selection performance and what potential candidates don't do well in their preparation and on the course 12:15 Kev's input into modernising the pre-selection training program 21:05 How did the lessons that Kev learnt in uniform translate into his current roles? 22:30 From the predominantly very ugly demographic of SASR to a ‘gym full of celebrities and models' in Sydney's trendy suburb of Darlinghurst 26:10 Building a fitness app – how hard/expensive can it be?! 27:00 Meeting rugby legends Ben and Owen Franks – a pivotal moment for Kev's transition into supporting elite sports 33:20 What's the difference between developing physical programs for Special Operations and elite sports and preparing them for the wider population? 40:30 Preparing Candice Warner for SAS Australia 47:00 What are Kev's current personal fitness goals? 48:50 The future of 98 Gym - the business of fitness 52:30 On Crossfit and F45 – the pros and cons of fitness movements like these 55:00 What's Kev's powersong – to fire him up when he needs to deadlift 250kg www.unforgiving60.com Email us at debrief@unforgiving60.com Instagram, Twitter: @Unforgiving60 External Links 98 Gym If you want some great black and white photos of Kev squatting the equivalent weight of a small car (and who doesn't?!) check out his Insta. Today we hear the Combat Story of Dr. Dan Pronk, a former Australian SAS doctor who completed four tours to Afghanistan. Do not be fooled by the doctor title, Dan was on the front lines conducting hundreds of operations with the elite SAS. This is the first of two interviews with Dan. Before the military, Dan was a triathlete and lived what he described as an average Australian upbringing. The military put him through medical school, but he wanted to be part of the elite SAS and fought for years for a chance to just get to selection, which he eventually did. Since leaving the military, Dan has gone on to an executive role in medical management, as well as co-owning the multimillion dollar company TacMed Australia and founding several other entrepreneurial startups. He's written several books, including Average 70kg Dickhead: Motivational Lessons from an Ex-Army Special Forces Doctor, and Arterial Tourniquets: For Police Officers, Law Enforcement and other First-Responders. He just released a third book with two fellow former SAS operators called Resilience Shield. Dan's also a motorhead with a love of high performance cars, leading him to own a classic Ferrari and Lamborghini. In this episode, I answer one of the most asked questions I receive: What is the difference between SASR and Commandos?
Moffitt the Profit. An SAS Team leader with over 11 active tours under his belt, psychologist, philosopher, author and singer . Much like the rest of the SASR, Moffit demonstrates is the humble, quite professional. The confidence and wisdom to take pause and reflect when the situation dictates, never acting without considering all options. It's a stark contrast to the personalities and narrative currently being displayed in the media. In this episode we did what the media won't: we spoke to an actual SAS soldier about his thoughts on the IGADF inquiry and the finding in the Brereton report. It wasn't all doom and gloom. We had a few laughs about liberation war souvenirs from Saddam Hussain's palace, Osama Bin Laden's cave and Punching prime ministers. Go and check it out and please subscribe.

Australian Fitness Podcast Episode 9 – Nick Caldwell (Special Forces Operator) I had a terrific Podcast with Nick Caldwell, an Australian veteran who served for 12 years in the Australian Army, and most of that in the elite SASR, the pinnacle of Australian Special Forces, a military unit regarded around the world. But we in fact spoke mostly about his fitness facility, The Mill, in Fremantle WA, and in detail about the culture and ethos behind him, his instructors, his facility and the unique programs that he runs. To give you some insight, Nick has taken his experience and importantly his training as a Special Forces Operator and created fitness programs and fitness experiences that allow you and I, Mr. and Mrs. Civilian to experience the stress, pressure, problem solving and hopefully develop the resilience to cope better with what life throws at us. For Nick, it’s not so much about the sets, reps and rest periods, but more about the pressure, experience and opportunity to really explore our potential and our probably untapped human capacity. He runs 12, 24 and 36-hour programs, (a little different to an F45 drive through workout) but I think that’s awesome. I really think Nick and his team are onto something here, and in today’s climate of offering a point-of-difference in the Australian Fitness Marketplace, too me, he’s breaking new ground. So, if you’re listening to this and you're looking for the opportunity to go off-grid and fully dark with ex-bad-ass military guys, hit Nick up. I’m sure he’ll introduce you to a whole new level of what-the-fuck have I got myself into. Enjoy. Last week I chatted about planning. Setting up your 2019 and how being really clear on your goals matters. I also spoke about the High Performance Getaway I had just run and the fact that you can be very successful in your business or personal life and not have a plan. You can just kind of wing it and everything’s ok. The problem is, if I’m being honest, that whilst this is possible it relies on a lot of things going your way. It’s easy when life’s all smooth sailing. But when the time comes, as it often does in life, that you get hit with an unexpected challenge. You cop that punch in the guts that really takes the wind out of you – you won’t have built the resilience or perhaps it’s more that you don’t know what your perfect performance line is so won’t know how to get back to it. What’s a Perfect Performance Line? In the Special Forces, particularly our SASR, there’s a concept around a Perfect Performance Line. If everything goes smoothly. If everything runs to plan. This is the line from where we are to where we want to be. This is the line from the start of the mission to the perfect execution and completion of the mission. Now the SAS know that a plan only ever stays perfect until the first bullet is fired, the first contact with the enemy. Then it’s two sides with two very different plans. But their idea is this: If you know what a perfect performance line looks like, if you understand the line from where you are to where you want to be then once you have contact with the enemy you have a line to identify and get back to. As soon as you’re knocked off your line the focus for you individually and for your team is to get back as close to the line as possible. Every incident, every moment that pushes you off that line you focus on moving back to that line or as close to that line as possible. You’re anchored to that line. You will drift. You will have circumstances push you away from it but you always bring yourself back to it. The truth is, even if you don’t fully get back to the Perfect Performance Line, so long as you’re consistently close to it and moving in the same direction as it, you will reach the objective. You will complete the mission. You will. But if you don’t know what the line looks like then as soon as you hit tough times you will be throw this way and that. You won’t have an anchor point to get back to. Nothing to hold you on the course. Having a plan is vital. Not in easy times. But in tough times. There’s a saying ‘Chop wood when you can. Sharpen your saw when you can’t’. I first heard this from a mate Steve Claydon in a sales context but I think it works in all contexts. You have do the work when the works there to be done. Ie. You chop the wood. But when there’s not work to be done you sharpen your saw so the next opportunity to chop wood you will be ready and efficient. Sharpening the saw in this context is planning. Plan for yourself, your life, your career, your business. Do it in the good times. When life’s easy. Sharpen the saw. When the going gets tough. When the shit hits the fan. You will have a sharpened tool with which to chop the wood. So that’s your goal this week. Set your plan for 2019. Sharpen your saw over the Christmas period so you can chop the wood, move towards your goals, in 2019. The plan is your perfect performance line. If it works for SAS in a combat situation it can certainly work for you in everyday life. That’s what I do. Look for the ways people achieve extraordinary results and then try to hack the code they use to do it. You do not have to create the wheel. It’s been done. Your job is to make it useful and more efficient for you. A lot of people contacted me for the planning worksheet. I have uploaded it... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome to Episode #67 of the Zacks Market Edge Podcast. Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, will be joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds and ETFs and how it impacts your life. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Neena Mishra, Editor of Zacks Income Investor, which specializes in dividend paying stocks. One of her favorite industries right now are the financials, specifically the community banks. Ten years ago, banks were the go-to investment for retirees and investors looking for yield. Many of the big banks paid dividends yielding 4% to 5%. But then the Great Recession hit. Banks that survived the chaos ended up cutting their dividends or eliminating them entirely. The once “go-to” industry now was off the investing radar. But that was then and this is now. With the Fed raising rates in December 2016 and expected to possibly raise rates another 3 times in 2017, suddenly the community banks are seeing earnings growth. Some banks have brought back their dividends and others, that never got rid of them, have been raising them. There are over 6,000 banks in the United States. Many of them trade publicly on various exchanges. How do you know which banks to buy? Tracey admits she had never heard of several of Neena’s top choices. That’s the problem with the community banks. A lot of them are still very local. But that doesn’t mean you should pass by this investing opportunity. These Banks Pay Solid Dividends and Have Good Fundamentals PacWest Bancorp (PACW) is a California bank with $21 billion in assets. It pays one of the higher dividends, with a yield of 3.7%. Washington Trust Bancorp (WASH), founded in 1800, is the oldest community bank in the United States. It yields 2.8%. It has raised its dividend in 23 of the last 24 years. That’s an impressive record for any company, let alone a bank which went through the Great Recession. Sandy Spring (SASR) serves the hot DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia market. It has a good record of increasing its dividend with 6 increases over the past 16 quarters. It yields 2.8%. WesBanco (WSBC) dates all the way back to 1870 in West Virginia. It now spans 5 states including Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania as well as its home market of West Virginia. It has a $1.8 billion market cap and pays a 2.3% yield. But what if there are simply too many choices? You won’t get that great of a yield, but you can buy the First Trust Community Bank ETF (QABA), which excludes the top 50 US banks so it is filled with many smaller regional and community banks. It is only yielding 1.1% as many of the smaller banks still aren’t able to pay a dividend. Still, Tracey and Neena are both very excited about this industry. Despite the big gain in many banking shares since the November 2016 election, both think there is room to run. Investors have turned their back on the banks for nearly a decade. The Fed rate increases should provide a much-needed boost to earnings. What else should you know about one of the hottest industries of 2017? Tune into this week’s podcast to find out. Episode 21 - Keith Fennell - SASR, Author, School Teacher This week I sat down and chatted with a good mate Keith Fennell. Keith is one of the best people I have met and worked with. He uses his previous military history in Special Forces to work with disadvantaged youth through to CEO's and athletes, all with the aim of giving them the best chance of succeeding in life and whatever endeavours they should choose. Bio: Keith Fennell joined the elite Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) at the age of 21 and was deployed on many operations, including missions to Afghanistan, East Timor, the Solomon Islands and the southern Indian Ocean. He also served on a medical deployment to East Africa, was a member of the boarding party on the controversial MV Tampa incident, and supported counter-terrorism operations. In late 2002 Fennell left the SAS and moved to the United Arab Emirates, where he was employed as a special operations adviser. In January 2004, he accepted a position in Iraq, and spent the next thirty months running operations there, in Afghanistan and in Banda Aceh. In June 2006 Fennell returned to Australia. He published his first book, Warrior Brothers, in 2008 and it quickly became a bestseller. His second book, Warrior Training, was released in September 2009. During the next five years Fennell completed a Bachelor of Arts and Graduate Diploma of Education (English and History Majors) in conjunction with supporting numerous high-performance clinics for Australia’s sporting and corporate elite. Fennell is currently employed as a secondary school teacher in a disadvantaged school in South Western Sydney. His aim is to create opportunity for disadvantaged students by establishing strong relationships and high expectations as a means to unleash student potential.
