Watch this episode on YouTube here https://youtu.be/r5zul4X0pQ8?si=oqvXKhg2DAeB4XKDDo You Ever Wonder about the tragic statistic of 22+ military veterans dying by suicide every single day?The Do You Ever Wonder host Mike Haltman, as Board Chair of the Heroes To Heroes Foundation (https://heroestoheroes.org/), is all too aware of the veterans who return home suffering the invisible wounds of moral injury and PTSD.Often, losing relationships with loved ones and friends, dealing with depression, isolation, and loneliness, they may believe they have nowhere else to turn other than alcohol, and drugs.22+ times each and every day, these American heroes turn to taking their lives, and it is very often suicide by gun!We saw today's Do You Ever Wonder guest Chris Jachimiec, an ambassador for End Family Fire, being interviewed about the need for safe and secure firearm storage. Campaigns many may be familiar with include Service Never Stops and Safe Stories. This is his story that brought him to where he is today...'Growing up, my brother and I were like a dynamic duo out there. We both would end up joining the military. I enlisted in the Air Force in ‘99 and Adam joined the Marine Corps in 2006. For the longest time, we were each other's best friends. It's like he was that person that was just connected to me all of the time.By 2012, he was struggling through a crisis with the Marines due to some things he experienced in combat, along with medical issues. It would eventually lead to his departure from the military. He struggled a lot with the transition.I was halfway around the world in Afghanistan with my deployment about to be wrapped up when Adam first attempted suicide. I got a call and immediately departed Afghanistan to my home in Las Vegas where I met my newborn son for the first time. We then drove together to San Diego to visit my brother in the ICU. We didn't quite know if Adam was gonna make it.For years after, Adam continued to struggle. Then, in 2017, I received a text from my stepmother. She's like, hey, I need you to call me as as soon as possible. And that's when I found out my brother had died by gun suicide. It took me a long time to deal with losing my brother. And in the year that followed, several other Veterans that I was friends with died by gun suicide, as well. I was probably naive in getting the right help that I needed at the time. I knew all the resources. I think it was the shock of it all which was there for quite some period of time, where I'm like, “Oh, I'm strong enough. I can go back to work.” I coped with it initially with work and alcohol.Eventually, I cracked. And that's what led me into some some bad decisions and some legal issues of my own.And that's where my story of having the firearm locked up probably ended up saving my life.'Learn more about gun storage and gun safety by visiting End Family Fire here https://www.endfamilyfire.org/. ___________________________________________________Please subscribe to the Do You Ever Wonder podcast using the two links below, and don't be shy about sharing the links with your friends. On

(Content Warning: Suicide) How have you planned for death? We often leave thoughts of death for old age, but the reality is that it often happens earlier than expected, and we can leave our loved ones without a plan. In this episode with Martha Hunt Handler, author of Winter of the Wolf, she and Jenn chat about the beauty of discussing death and leaving behind specific plans and gifts for our loved ones. Martha also shares the spiritual journey that led her to write her book which was inspired by the death of her best friend's 12 year old son. They talk about the otherness and added guilt, blame, and shame that comes with death by suicide and how we can better show up for families affected by suicide with more compassion. Martha reminds us to open up more conversations about death and dying, and to lean into our intuition. About 49,500 people died by suicide last year in the US, the highest number ever. This comes to 135 per day. The recent apparent death by suicide of a beloved pastor in Texas made the issue more real for me. It caused me to reflect on other pastors I've known over the years who died in the same way. And to relive memorial services I have conducted for suicide victims and their families, among the most painful experiences of my life. These reflections raise a formative question: Does our faith help to prevent suicide? If so, why? If not, why not? This is a newsletter. It is written by a psychiatrist. Not actually plural psychiatrists. I am a suicide expert, much to my chagrin. Today, I am reporting on the update I did see coming:A total of 49,449 Americans died by suicide in 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. This is a 2.6% increase from 48,183 in 2021 and the highest number ever recorded, according to provisional numbers released in a new report from the federal health agency. All the investments into “solutions” for “the mental health crisis”—absent compelling data to the contrary—have this one metric calling utter and total b******t.Nothing we have done—objectively—has worked. More people are dead. The irony is in the article about the topic, it advertised one of the things that—itself—is not working:About 14% of the 23,000-plus Illinois calls made in April and May to the 988 crisis hotline were redirected to other states, per an analysis by health research outlet KFF.Why it matters: When calls are transferred out of state, it becomes much harder for those specialists to locate nearby services for people in crisis. We can't address a crisis just by screaming about it being one. We can throw money at just anything and expect it to help.If we addressed the problem of not enough gasoline for cars by filling the tank with water, and funding endless mobility hotlines, and startups to make matching platforms for the right place to fill you car with water, we would be unsurprised with the outcomes.I'll summarize my take—Current mental health treatment:* Makes inaccurate diagnoses* Prescribes wildly ineffective treatments* Those treatments are delivered by individuals not trained meaningfully to address the problems we are facing* We have effective treatments available.* We refuse to pay for them as a system, instead paying for nonsense* We refuse to respond to crisis in a way that is anything under that a failure* We allow vampires to profit from Destroying emergency response nationally.* And we stalk and penalize those who dare help those suffering the most. It's making a lot of money for private equity, VC backed children, and big health vampires. It is deeply unserious as an approach to a very, very serious problem. It's not going to get better until we call a spade a spade. We need to, before the horror takes you too… This is a public episode. In this episode, we talk to Dr Faraz Mughal, who is a practising NHS General Practitioner and NIHR Doctoral Fellow at the School of Medicine at Keele University. Title of paper: Recent GP consultation before death by suicide in middle-aged males: a national consecutive case series studyAvailable at: https://doi.org/10.3399/BJGP.2022.0589Preventing suicide in middle-aged males is a global priority. This national case series study found that 43% of middle-aged males who died by suicide had a final GP consultation in the preceding 3 months, and of these males, over half presented with a mental health problem. Males who had recent GP contact before suicide were more likely to have self-harmed in the 3 months before compared with males who had no recent GP contact. Males who had a current physical illness, recent history of self-harm, attended for a mental health problem, and experienced recent work-related problems were more likely to consult with their GP shortly before dying by suicide. GPs and primary care clinicians should be alert to these clinical factors that may be proximal to suicide, and in turn, offer personalised holistic care.

Death by Suicide I have never known what it feels like to want to end my life. But I do know what a broken heart feels like, and I know it is not good. I do know that losing someone to suicide is possibly the worse loss anyone can suffer. No one can ever be prepared to deal with it. When someone we love is lost to suicide, the aftermath is clouded with the misunderstandings and shame that surrounds both mental illness and suicide. One of the most common misunderstandings regarding suicide is the thought that the primary cause of suicide is mental illness. Also, there is a belief that only people who are mentally ill attempt suicide. None of these myths are true. Keep in mind that there are hundreds of other factors, including but not limited to abuse, trauma, alcohol use, poor problem-solving capacity, and chronic illness. Sadly, even the simple feeling of social isolation can be a cause for attempted suicide. It comes from the feeling that you have no one to talk to or that no one will understand what you are going through. Ignorance concerning mental illness contributes to suicide. The element of shame keeps many from seeking help. The risk increases when thoughts of what others may think of them stands in the way of doing something about their problems or seeking help.
He is me. The announcement of tWitch's death by suicide hits insanely close to home. He has been described as love and light. I feel, in a way, that is how people tend to see me: Love LIGHT High energy Humor/Laughter What people don't see: Major Depressive Disorder Addict Heartbroken Hopeless Empty When people say they don't understand how this happens… I do. I get putting on the show. Performing to keep the people around you happy and feeling completely empty when the lights go down and the show is over. I have never been in a place where a world without me sounds better than a world with me, but I see how people arrive there. It is not far off. I share this to say, it is not only the quiet ones or the overtly sad ones that need a hand. We can do better. Consistently check-in. Ignore the highlight reel that is social media. Make sure everyone in your life knows that you love them and knows that this world is better with them in it. Listen for understanding and without judgment. Ask “Are you ok” and let them know they are not a burden but a blessing in your life. "The very nature of someone struggling with suicide and depression is that they're not likely to reach out. They feel like a burden to others. People who are having thoughts of suicide often feel trapped and alone. Even if you can't find the exact words to say, the aspect that somebody cares makes a big difference” I hope this helps. I hope we can each be the difference in the life of someone who is hurting. ❤️ Stephen tWitch Boss Brody Stevens (The Hangover) Kate Spade Kurt Cobain Chester Bennington (Lincoln Park) Anthony Bourdain Robin Williams Daisy Coleman (Audrie and Daisy) Dave Mirra (X Games) Mark Salling (Glee) Naomi Judd Houston Tumlin (Talladega Nights) Chelsie Kryst (Miss USA) ... just to name a few of the loved and recently lost...

As host of SHLTMM, I wanted you to know that this episode of my podcast contains some graphic or sensitive content that some may find disturbing.Gregg's podcast, "The Compulsive Storyteller" which can be found where ever you listen to podcast, is Gregg continuing the art of telling stories handed down from past generations. Worth a listen for sure. (Link is below.)When Gregg was a little boy the family had moved to the Albany, New York area. Betty owned a plane, so who better to fly with his mom on a regular basis. He loved seeing the landscape from way up in the sky. It was quite an experience for a little boy. They'd go out to lunch and fly from one location to another. Gregg really cherishes his memories of his mom.Gregg's parents were apparently too similar personalities to make a good match according to Gregg. When Betty was checked out of the WASP at the end of WWII, she received a job offer as the first ever female flight controller at LaGuardia Airport. Her husband sent her a telegraph ordering her to go back to buffalo and wait for him and not to take the job.Gregg shares a few very telling stories about his mother's experience in the military. Unfortunately a strong, talented, fearless women had a tough time in a male dominated industry such as the military. Gregg often says, "she was a woman ahead of her time." Betty flew an AT-6 which was considered the best fighter training aircraft during WWII, P38 Fighter Bomber and more.Over the 32 years that Gregg knew his mother, he laments "she never once said 'I'm sorry,' nor did she say so to my sisters or my father. That was a real disability she had. She was very proud." Unfortunately, Gregg's maternal grandmother held onto grudges similar to his mother. Anyone who went against his grandmother, they also were crossed off the list forever.Being in the military was not always easy, the most challenging was when confronted by misogynistic men. That happened on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the harassment continued after the military while working in the real estate business."A woman who was strong and decisive and stood up for herself was basically a difficult woman," Gregg explains out of frustration.Unfortunately, Betty LeFevre, even with all her accomplishments, was more unhappy than anyone could have understood. * About Gregg In His WordsI'm a public artist with permanent commissions around the world, a passion for the art world, entrepreneurship, multiculturalism, & stories.I have completed over 200 permanently installed public art projects all over the world, many in the USA and a dozen in Manhattan. Library Walk, at Fifth and 41st, is the latest work of public art in NYC. Many of my projects are unique in that they consist of a series of bronze panels with text and imagery that are set in sidewalks, parks and plazas. Library Walk is two blocks long, and it's 96 bronze panels lead the viewer toward the front door of NY's central Schwarzman Library. My public art is all about exploring the history and character of the places where it is set. I have a particular interest in telling the lost and forgotten stories from African American history, women's history, Hispanic history, natural history and those of other minority cultures.I have also turned many my experiences in and around the world of art into a podcast of short personal stories that proves truth can be stranger than fiction. The Compulsive Storytelleris my podcast of intriguing comic, tragic and weird stories, many of which involve getting myself into and out of trouble. It is available on Apple, Spotify and most other platforms. Reviews of my public artworks can be found in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, and many other newspapers, magazines and online publications. Deficiencies in Inpatient Mental Health Care Coordination and Processes Prior to a Patient's Death by Suicide at the Harry S Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital in Columbia, Missouri The VA OIG conducted a healthcare inspection to determine the validity of an allegation regarding a patient's mental health care at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital (facility) in Columbia, Missouri, prior to death by suicide. The OIG reviewed the patient's mental health care coordination, discharge planning, suicide risk screening and evaluation, administrative actions, and Mental Health Treatment Coordinator (MHTC) assignment. The OIG substantiated that the patient died by suicide within three days of discharge from the facility's Inpatient Mental Health Unit. The OIG also substantiated that an inpatient psychiatry resident initiated antidepressant medication, and a registered nurse provided discharge instructions that included suicide prevention materials, consistent with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) guidance. Inpatient staff did not include Columbia Vet Center staff in discharge planning and failed to complete the VHA-required comprehensive suicide risk evaluation prior to the patient's discharge, which may have contributed to missed information to adequately establish acute and chronic suicide risk factors and a risk mitigation plan. Facility leaders did not establish an MHTC policy and staff did not assign the patient's MHTC while awaiting transfer to another level of care. Staff failed to comprehensively report a positive suicide risk screening result in an issue brief related to the patient's death, and facility leaders, in part based on the issue brief, did not make an institutional disclosure to the patient's next of kin. Veterans Integrated Service Network and National Center for Patient Safety leaders did not have knowledge of a memorandum of understanding that required Vet Center representation for shared patients during VHA root cause analyses. The OIG made one recommendation to the Under Secretary for Health and six recommendations to the Facility Director.

Combat Veterans, Moral Injury and Death By SuicideThis show, with two special guests, explores the fact that in trying to help our American heroes who honorably served and now need help, the federal government offers no faith-based programs as a path towards healing. This despite the fact that the tragic statistic of 20+ military veterans dying by suicide each and every day, has not changed over time. In fact, over the past 10-years the Department of Defense and the VA have conducted 1,100 programs (none faith-based) that were working with PTSD and veteran death by suicide and the numbers have not changed. At the same time 501(c)(3)'s that do utilize spirituality and reconnection to faith in their missions, have been overwhelmingly successful in saving lives! Two Experts On Faith and Saving Lives!Today's show features two experts on the subject of the utilization of spirituality and reconnection to faith as the methodology for saving veterans from death by suicide.Heroes To Heroes Foundation's Judy Elias: Judy is the Founder of the nondenominational 501(c)(3) Heroes To Heroes Foundation. The Heroes To Heroes mission helps combat vets who return home suffering with moral injury, and it utilizes peer support, spirituality and reconnection to faith achieved through 12-member Team journeys to Israel. On this journey, these men and women find the strength to open up and begin the process of healing. To-date over 300 have come through the program, and all are with us beginning to live their lives again.Dr. Steven P. Bucci, Visiting Fellow The Heritage Foundation: He spent 30-years as a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces and then as a visiting fellow at The Heritage Foundation focused on cybersecurity, military special operations, and defense support to civil authorities. He authored the article 'What Faith-Based Efforts Can Do To Help Prevent Veteran Suicide' in which he quoted New York Times author David Brooks who said that 'trauma is a moral and spiritual issue as much as a psychological or chemical one'. A panel that he chaired echoed the fact that military veteran death by suicide is currently a tragedy with a trajectory that is not going down.So if the federal government won't utilize faith in its 'solutions' regardless of efficacy, then it will be up to NGO's to pick-up the slack. These two guests will share with us what they know through the results that have have witnessed and experienced first-hand.____________________________________________What's your favorite podcast platform? Welcome to the first episode of The Suicide Loss to Light Podcast. I'm pleased to be here with you and glad you're joining me. This episode was recorded on the 14th anniversary of my husband's suicide. I talk about how different life is for me now than right after his death, about my early belief that I would never feel true joy again, and about where our feelings really come from and why we have more control over them than we think. I ask you to give yourself permission to feel sorrow as long as you feel is necessary, but ask you to consider that death does not have to mean that you will never feel peace or joy again.
