A weekly horror discussion podcast where an audience suggested horror film get dissected into the good, the bad, and anything else we find fun or relevant. From intros, anecdotes, the kill of the week and the occassion deleted scene, we keep the horror hilarity happening
We have been snacking heavily from the Halloween Grab-Bag and unfortunately we have hit the nameless taffy and raisin boxes that is Creepshow 2. Sheldon is back, but gone are the lovely comic inserts, Tom Atkins being a terrible moustachless father, and the well made prop that is The Creeper, and instead we have less stories, animated interstitials from Don Bluths waste basket, a poorly designed replacement of the Creeper, and just... less of everything good. But we endure for you, dear listeners. We are now hosted at Captivate where you can tip us to send us movie suggestions and theme months. We might have some episodes missing for a bit but we are moving to a new feed so not to worry. we are just shuffling things around.
We don't have to worry about the man from Mars or ponder whatever cars he likes to snack on, cause Blondie has a different snack in mind, the brother of Joey Lawrence! This boy has to keep his captor busy with bite sized stories just like we are enjoying this month. Will he survive? Will WE survive? listen and find out!We have merch now! We continue the Halloween Grab Bag with some campfire stories told by idiot teens. the stories aren't that great. But we still have plenty to discuss and we get to see Peter from Office Space clapping some cheeks, so it's not all bad. And we are joined by John's brother Phil to share the pain. We have merch now! We're keeping Halloween alive for episode 365 as we spend the entire month snacking on bite sized tales of terror! This is the month of the Halloween Grab Bag, with anthology horrors to feast our eyes on. We start with the holy trinity of horror, Stephen King, George Romero, and Tom Savini having the time of their lives and giving us Creepshow, a legendary, iconic collection of horror stories. This episode features John, and the return of Sheldon and his possessed chromebook giving us some audio from hell but we make it work. We have no quarrels with vaccines on this podcast, but someone dropped the ball in Fort Chicken, cause thing's aren't going well with our time going Back to School…. Some bad meat has led to very bad kids and its up to Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill, and a very quirky biology teacher to survive the ordeal. Even if it involves a trip to Danville. This nice inversion of the faculty is pretty funny, and we had a great time watching it. so enjoy the great time that is us talking about it! We have merch now! With our previous movie, it was a great idea executed terribly. This movie is fittingly the mirror opposite. A terrible idea executed brilliantly. This is just an excellent movie but the premise just begs so many unanswered questions. It follows Jordan Peeles great idea of facing cultural issues through a distorted lens, much like the twilight zone that inspired this film. Another social horror, and one that just makes us want to see whats next from this man. he clearly has an appreciation for the classics. We have merch now! It's a wonderful night, you're hanging out with your friends, and everyone is talking about a comet passing by. Then you suffer a neighbourhood blackout and find yourself in the intersection of an excellent episode of the twilight zone, and a terrible improv show. and the only house you can see from your own house is…..your own house. Realities of various states are unravellled and nobody might be who they think they are. It's an excellent concept. Too bad the first sign things are in bad hands, is that the title is the opposite of what is actually happening. But at least we get a cutting room floor skit out of it :)We have merch now! What happens when you take the dangers of dating, the desperation for side hustle in a gig economy, and the stigma of vegetarianism, and combine it in a quirky dark comedy thriller seasoned with a tongue in cheek soundtrack? You get a movie that really hits so many night notes it only hits lows created by it's heights. We really enjoyed watching this, and talking about it. We have reached the bombastic conclusion of Nic Uncaged on the podcast where one Nicolas Cage has had his horror films appraised by us. and we end it where it all began. His first horror (with an asterisk) film. The story behind this is as bizarre as the final product. and more bizarre still is how things end with the Nic Cage that Mike has been speaking online with for 2 months. Alicia isn't with us but Christy is back to take a bite out of this black comedy. We have merch now! Follow us on Twitch for listening parties and just hanging out. Unlike the janitor of this film, we have a lot to say about Willy's Wonderland. Totally not a rip off of 5 nights at Freddy's or the Banana Splits Movie, or Child's Play. This movie is SOOOO much its own thing, with likeable characters and a coherent plot with justified motivations. And the conversations i had with Nic Cage in this episode are absolutely 100% real, and this episode is short. We have merch now! Follow us on Twitch for listening parties and just hanging out. We have reached the hump of Nic Uncaged Month on the podcast and Holy Mothers/Fathers Day! This movie is a novel idea, where parents all have the same urge, to take back their independence and revoke their parental rights in the extreme. Selma Blair shines in this movie and we would be totally convinced this was a James Gunn film. and Mike shares his private moments with Nic Cage as their not so secret chats continue. We have merch now! We have only just begun to celebrate the horror works of Nic Cage and man we really stepped up from the last one, cause this is a Lovecraft adaptation. One of the most interesting ways to create an otherworldly threat that exists beyond human morality and understanding, this was just done super well and features great acting talents all around. And if you think we're going to hate it cause everyone else, we got news for you. We only hate things for OUR reasons, and you will hear all of them in this episode. We take a break from Pride Month to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Month. Native peoples depiction in horror films or just regular film has been notorious. We take this month to give historical context to what lead to this, and the effects of it and what's been done to correct it. We take films that honor native people and speak to their struggles, and give them their due. We begin with the film Prey, where a Yautja lands to hunt the deadliest game Earth can provide, and he finds a Comanchee woman who refuses to be …Prey. We have merch now! We go back to the 70's with this brand new movie, where David Dastmalchian who kicked ass as polka dot man, and many other roles, gets his starring role as a talk show host struggling to keep his career, and in his desperation, he decides to get a guest no one has ever landed on TV before…. an actual demon. It's just Alicia in the studio with Mike but John didn't miss much as we covered a mid movie this week. But the episode is good as always! This movie is a Diablo Cody joint, and directed by Zelda Williams. but there's only one of these ladies at fault, and its not Zelda. This movie never lands its tone correctly but the aesthetic is pretty damn flawless, and true to life. Particularly the life of Alicia, in terms of Lisa's wardrobe and basic vibe. But Alicia hasn't been caught for her crimes yet so that's one point for her :)We have merch now! Follow us on Twitch for listening parties and just hanging out. Since we watched a cartoon that was basically a porn, we decided to watch a porn that's a horror, and landed on X! We have some thoughts on this period piece about the swinging 70's that introduced us to the absolute purity of vision that belongs to the director, writer, and producer Ti West. We also felt inspired enough to scrounge up a deleted scene, so enjoy the alternate ending with “It Came From the Cutting Room Floor”.We have merch now! As we descended into the abyss and wondered if we ever would see the light again, Alicia pulls us out with a strong finish to Animation April, with a Genndy Tartakovsky film using iconic horror legends all hanging out and trying to navigate a young girls coming of age. We have taken some sinful turns in Animation April and it's time to atone as we get dragged through the 9 circles of Perdition. But we are not alone. We are joined by Alicia, and Dante, and Virgil the Poet as we ponder the many questions like how can you keep a cohesive tone when you change animation studios, what does redemption truly look like, and how will the afterlife even function after Dante brings the ruckus? One of those is definitely answered. We have merch now! Follow us on Twitch for listening parties and just hanging out. Also we have a Discord We now have a website! Animation April is upon us still, like a lung full of space bacteria we just can't shake it! We are back with Animation April where we check out animated horrors from all over the world, and we begin with 2 helpings of anime. The first being Wicked City, a movie about a man and a demon fighting for peace between their worlds, and the terrorists of the demon world seeking to undo the treaty that would create such a peace. While its lovingly rendered and visually lovely, it's also…. kind of a porno. and not a loving consensual porno. not always. This movie is well regarded and led to some big career opportunities for the people involved, so it has a degree of importance. It mostly serves as a reminder of tonal inconsistency, missed opportunities, and the writers not-at-all-disguised fetish. We have merch now! Since we haven't a space horror since Leprechaun or Jason, we imagined we could finally get a GOOD 90's space horror loaded with decent CGI. We got one of those things, but luckily it doesn't matter if the CGI looks bad, cause we don't need eyes with what we're watching. Lorne has a substack where he writes short stories, as well as a youtube channel! We have merch now! Follow us on Twitch for listening parties and just hanging out. Alicia is back with us to discuss a woman using dream technology to thwart the schemes of a criminal, but since we already saw Paprika, we covered the Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez and the utter manic brilliance of Vince D'onofrio as a goofy looking psychopath who has an inner demon that is…. bloody terrifying. This movie is visually captivating and just LOADED with style. and a few logical inconsistencies. We have merch now! Follow us on Twitch for listening parties and just hanging out. We bring the Black History Month of 2024 to a very strong finish as we cover the 2021 Netflix movie, His House. Black History Month proceeds with another Blaxploitation film based on a literary classic. This film has a LOT to say about black identity, and the duality that permeates the black consciousness. So we are glad to have Christy here to help us break it down. Also this was directed by William Crane, the same guy that gave us Blacula, so expect some similar themes. Both good and bad. Black History Month continues. Christy returns for more, and so does the Dark Prince, Mamuwalde! Its time to Scream, Blacula, Scream! Does this film have the same actor as before? YES! Does it have the same quality of plot, music, character, or soul? NO! Does it even have a black director like the first one? NO! Is it possible the lack of quality has something to do with it? YES!We have merch now! Follow us on Twitch for listening parties and just hanging out. Also we have a Discord We now have a website! We wrap up the end of JanuarLee with the end of our tribute to the life and work of one of the Gods of Horror, SIR Christopher Lee. In this episode we cover the last part of his life, and his non cinematic works. and this movie was kind of important in his life, at least his relationship with the author of the story its based on. This film has him playing an excommunicated priest who nobody checked to make sure he actually left the church. It is just the first of many questionable decisions regarding this movie. We continue celebrating the life and works of Christopher Lee, and we are not alone. We are joined by Trevor Ziebart from Sons of Butcher and Moonlight Desires, to put on our sunshades and party with the soviet police watching us. Seriously the best part of this episode is all the madness that took place behind the scenes, but that isn't to say the movie isn't a shit show in and of itself. This is a fun one. We have merch now! The celebration of the works and life of Christopher Lee continue with JanuarLee as Alicia stays with us to discuss Dark Places! A film that exists! Lee is of course a villain in this but despite his screen time is more a background villain. The star of this movie is of course Joan Collins plump luscious squeezable…..talent. yes. Alicia cannot get enough of the Graveyard Shift and joins us for JanuarLee as we finally watch the film where all the horror legends come together…..for a movie that was based on a play that 6 previous film adaptations that were already played out and dated by the last film, in the 40s. The actual star of this film is Desi Arnaz Jr. thats right. all those greats and the focus of the film is on HIM. if you like angry Mike, you will enjoy this episode. We have merch now! Christmassacre comes to a end with a BANG as Alicia is finally rewarded with a film that might not be horror in any sense of the word but delivers a holiday film with the joy of the season and a body count to be proud of. We took a break from the NOT depressing well made horror films, and came back to The Lodge. Alicia might be reconsidering her pledge to see this through but we can all agree its a great film that will make you sad after. The Chrismassacre of glum. We are joined by Alicia to ring in the Christmassacre of 2023 with a film that has some existential horror rather than a monster or slasher. but that doesn't take away its absolute brilliance as a film. Excellent acting, wonderful premise, great scenery and top notch writing should have made this a classic film but the movie faced a release during the pandemic so it didn't get the awareness it should have. But we fix that in tonights episode. so help us celebrate the final christmas, but NOT the final Christmassace. We have merch now!
