Richard Connell's 1924 short story, "The Most Dangerous Game," continues to haunt and inspire filmmakers nearly a century later. Its chilling premise of a wealthy sportsman hunting humans for sport has resonated through decades of cinema, influencing countless horror and thriller narratives. Join Kyle and his subjects, Pete, Kynan, and Tommy, as they embark on a thrilling exploration of this enduring tale and its impact on modern film. This episode of "Sitting in the Dark" focuses on three distinct cinematic interpretations of the "man hunting man" theme, each offering a unique perspective on the source material. The discussion begins with "The Hunt" (2020), a big-budget action thriller starring Betty Gilpin and Hilary Swank. The hosts dissect the film's controversial reception, its exploration (or lack thereof) of class warfare and political commentary, and the effectiveness of its fast-paced, often brutal action sequences. They debate whether the film's slick Hollywood production enhances or detracts from its core message.Next, the group turns to "Get Duked!", a British horror-comedy that subverts expectations with its unique rhythm and youthful energy. The hosts praise the film's performances, its exploration of class dynamics, and its ability to make the vast Scottish Highlands feel terrifying. They also highlight the surprising subplot involving a local DJ and his unexpected audience. Finally, the discussion shifts to "Run Sweetheart Run," a film that tackles the horrors of being a woman in a world of toxic masculinity. The hosts commend the movie's refusal to be voyeuristic in its depiction of violence against women, while debating the effectiveness of its supernatural elements. They also explore the film's themes of privilege, survival, and the societal constraints faced by women.Throughout the conversation, Kyle and his co-hosts offer insightful analysis and personal reflections on the enduring appeal of the "hunting humans" narrative. They examine how these films tackle issues of class, gender, and power dynamics while delivering thrills and scares. The episode serves as a thought-provoking exploration of how a nearly century-old story continues to shape and inspire modern horror cinema.Film SundriesRead The Most Dangerous Game by Richard ConnellWatch the movies discussed:The Hunt: Apple • Amazon • JustWatchGet Duked: Apple • Amazon • JustWatchRun Sweetheart Run: Apple • Amazon • JustWatch (00:00) - Welcome to Sitting in the Dark (03:46) - The Most Dangerous Game (08:21) - The Hunt (26:50) - Get Duked (41:39) - Run Sweetheart Run (01:11:17) - Coming Attractions Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. Keeping with our October whores4horror theme, this episode is on the feminist horror flick Run Sweetheart Run, one of Blaire's faves! Cherie (Ella Balinska) is a single mom and secretary at an LA law firm who has to go to dinner with her boss' client. Sure, he may be hot and rich, but he's actually a bloodthirsty demon who chases her all around the city. Dating in LA is hard! Costume designer Nadine used touches of symbolic red throughout the film and other interesting choices, like a decorated military jacket and karate suits. Other things we discuss? Oh, just the great Hoe Bag vs. Slut Kit debate, men in gray sweatpants, and Blaire reminisces about her interesting night at Schwartz and Sandy's (for all your Vanderpump peeps). Tune in, now! *Disclaimer: IMDB has incorrect information, and Marie named an additional costume designer in the episode, which was wrong. Our bad!

Today, we are bringing back our Choice Overload show with 4 feature films! For those who are unfamiliar with our Choice Overload format, here's a quick refresher. Back in early 2020, streamer sites were loading up hundreds of movies to satisfy the millions of folks stuck in their homes. We decided to binge watch movies and let our listeners know if those movies were worth watching. To make it fun, we decided that we would have to choose movies that none of us had seen before. Also, to add some risk to our game, once we chose a movie, we had to watch it and review it regardless of how horrible it might be. And of course, the point of Choice Overload is to let our listeners know if a lesser known movie is worth watching or not and why. Kenny and Del chose 2 movies each and will quickly review them before giving their 3P rating. In this show, we do more than a movie review by delving into the lives of the cast and crew, fan theories, trivia, scene breakdowns, and anything related to the film itself. Needless to say, our shows are a little longer than your average movie review show, but we can assure you that our shows are jam packed with entertaining and interesting discussions. If that sounds like your sort of bag, hang out with Kenny and Del as they get into Choice Overload. As always, chapter tags are available in Buzzsprout to help you skip directly to a particular movie. Below are the timestamps to help you navigate in other podcast apps. Email: jnj.peoplearetheworst@gmail.com Riddle me this! Is it intriguing listening to a deep thinker ponder the answers to riddles? Probably not! So, we switched gears, and started talking about movies instead. First up, "Run Sweetheart Run!". The third wave feminist fantasy of defeating the patriarchy, using only menstrual blood and some rocks. I'm not even bullshitting, that's exactly what happens. You can check for yourself, if you're okay with wasting 2 hours of your life. Unless, you're a full on man hater. In which case, you're welcome for the suggestion of the best movie you've ever seen! Next up, "Wakanda Forever". It was a solid movie. There's girl power a plenty, if you're looking for some of that. Also, some possible subtle racism, maybe? Good times! The important thing is they gave Chadwick Boseman his respect, so stick tap for that. (Forrest Gump voice) That's all I have to say about that. I'm so glad Jenny died at the end of that movie. 28 years later, I'm still glad that user junkie skank bought the farm. Oh, that's right, Forrest probably had to buy it for her. Broke ass STD having harlot!

We love when our return guests ask for us by name and that's exactly what happened when we were pitched this interview with director Shana Feste. We met Shana during her press tour of her film Boundaries back in 2018 and then we were reunited at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. It's been two whole years (plus some months) but her film Run Sweetheart Run is out in the universe streaming right now on Amazon Prime. We get to catch up with Shana about using her hometown of Los Angeles as the backdrop of Run Sweetheart Run, her loyal music supervisor (who picked some great songs for the film btw), writing about periods for a film, her real life story of a date that got scary and later was the basis of Run Sweetheart Run, the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, and more. It was great to speak with Shana again and we can't wait to see what's up her sleeve on the big screen and beyond. Thanks for another heartfelt convo Shana

We start this week's show with a talk about The Conjuring 4. At least that was the plan. Instead, we try to remember which movies were a part of the Conjuring universe and which case was really the Warrens' biggest. We also talk about the connection between a DCEU movie.Genre of the Future returns and we talk about some of the most exciting gerne films of the year. We also go over another exorcism movie, dating apps, and the a latest release from Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson. Plus, a discussion of Southern California and its place in genre cinema. We have covered some interesting films from Europe on this show. The one thing they all seem to have in common is their unique take on European culture. There is a creativity to them that is daring, exciting, and fun to watch. They are something of a throwback to the American indie film scene of the 1990s.H4Z4RD is a great example . The premise sounds simple enough. Noah loves his girlfriend and daughter. He wants to make sure to take care of them while also doing a favor for his brother. Unsurprisingly, things do not go as planned. Noah's day ends up involving drugs. wolves, and security guards who really like his car. We talk about the movie's pacing, music, and unique sense of humor. We close the show with one of the biggest horror releases of the month. Shudder recently announced that V/H/S/99 set the record for most watched movie premiere. We helped them set that record, so we decided we have a right to say whatever we want about it. We talk about surprise endings, feeling uncomfortable, and new contenders for best horror director.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network.
