What's up, dudes? “Gremlins” is a classic holiday horror, and I've got artist and author of the Banned Book Club series Ryan Estrada here to talk about! Yes, we really get into the “Gremlins” original script by Chris Columbus and its novelization by George Gipe!In the original script, Billy is fantasy author and sticks up for himself much more. Of course, the gremlins themselves are also more vicious. Gone is the good mogwai character of Gizmo. In fact, they kill and eat the dog, decapitate Billy's mom, and eat some McDonald's customers (rather than the food). Thankfully, Joe Dante lightened the tone and brought in some humor. In contrast to the mysterious thriller of Columbus, Gipe expands the backstory of the creatures. In his origin, the mogwai were genetically engineered by an alien named Mogturmen to be gifts and peace offerings to neighboring worlds. Unfortunately, he miscalculated, and the gifts turned out to be mischievous and murderous pests. Can't win ‘em all, I guess.Medieval sword replica? Check. Alien geneticist? Yup. Gremlin in a toolbox thrown into a lake? Only if you want to setup a sequel! So grab your sword, save your crush, and kill some little green monsters to this episode on the “Gremlins” original script and novelization!RyanEstrada.comIG: @ryaneatradadotcomFB: @RyanEstradaGive us a buzz! For this episode our panel read "Banned Book Club" by Kim Hyun Sook, Ko Hyung-Ju, and Ryan Estrada. This book follows Hyun Sook's adventures as a young revolutionary during South Korea's Fifth Republic dictatorship. Because irony is dead, this book has in turn faced book bans of its own. Join us as we talk about the freedom to read, the importance of being able to imagine a different world, that a police state will inevitably do police state things, and how much we love the bus. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will be a minisode on comics / life / balance.
This week, Ryan Estrada is back to chat with Travis about the 1999 Comic Book movie, Mystery Men. Based (loosely) on the Flaming Carrot comic, it stars Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Hank Azaria and William H Macy as wanna be super heroes in Champion City. When Captain Amazing goes missing shortly after his arch nemesis Cassanova Frankenstein gets out of prison, who will rescue him, and save the city from certain doom? So, is this one ahead of it's time, or best left 25 years in the past? Let's find out...Find Ryan's work at https://www.ryanestrada.comThanks go out to Audie Norman (@TheAudieNorman) for the album art. We're going back to 1987 to read "Kraven's Last Hunt" by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck, which collects issues from The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man. This is a classic capes and tights story about how some men will fight a decade-long battle to best Spider-Man in hand-to-hand combat rather than go to therapy. Several content warnings apply to this journey through Peter Parker's emo phase, but you don't need to be steeped in nostalgia to appreciate the trip. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will be on "Banned Book Club" by Kim Hyun Sook, Ko Hyung-Ju, and Ryan Estrada.

For this episode on "As the Crow Flies," by Mel Gillman, Jam, Jeff, and JD are joined by Ryan Estrada. We talk about one of Ryan's favourite banned books. Is this a thoughtful story of alienation, doubt, microaggressions, and faith? Or is it, as one book banner summed it up, just “gender chaos?” We'll talk about the power of traditional media (by which I mean pencil crayons), libraries, and how not to be uncomfortable in nature. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will be on "O Human Star" by Blue Delliquanti.

What's up, dudes? I've got artist, author, and adventurer Ryan Estrada here to talk about his new book “No Rules Tonight” on Christmas in Korea in the ‘80s! Curfews and banned books and dance clubs! Oh my! It's a fascinating look into true events!Kim Hyun Sook is in college, and she's being eyed as the new leader of the Banned Book Club. To top it off, it's Christmas Eve, so traditionally this is when the Dance Club heads up the mountain to par-tay! Speaking to the true story that inspired both books, Hyun Sook said, “Banned Book Club is a story about the harsh realities we faced while living under a dictator. But at the time, we did not think about ourselves as living in a dystopia. We dealt with many problems and tried to make the world a better place, but we were still living our lives, making friends, falling in love, and having fun. I wanted to make a book about finding the joy in life when the world doesn't seem to want you to be happy. About discovering yourself in a world that seems hostile toward your very existence. Banned Book Club was about the sacrifices we made, the truths we hid, and the dangers we endured. I want readers of ‘No Rules Tonight' to understand that the most important step to make the world a better place isto be your true, authentic self.”Give us a buzz! After the failure of the Dick Tracy movie, Warren Beatty was so mad at the studio that he decided to make sure the studio never regained the rights to make another Dick Tracy movie. To that end, every 12 years or so he makes a weird avant garde art piece dick tracy zoom interview intended to be seen by no one... but which allows him to retain copyright! Artist, author and adventurer Ryan Estrada joins us to talk about these delightful exercises in spite.
The newest guest on the Citywide Bytes live show has worked on award-winning titles such as “Banned Book Club,” “Occulted,” and is here to talk about two great new titles. Ryan Estrada joins me to dive into “The Silver City,” the second part in the “Student Ambassador” series, which features a new adventure with main character Joseph Bazan. We talk about Joseph and how he came to be as well as how he fares in the newest mystery. This comic is based on a very real place and Ryan goes into how he world-built the newest comic. For “No Rules Tonight,” Ryan worked once again with his wife Kim Hyun Sook on this very real look at South Korea in the 1980s. We talk about what the country was like in this time period and how this influenced the story. Ryan shares the collaboration process with his wife and how this continues the story found in “Banned Book Club.”
It's another first time watch for Travis, and another Coen brothers film. Ryan Estrada joins the show, and makes Travis finally watch the 1994 film, The Hudsucker Proxy. Starring Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Newman. Evoking the feel of a 1940s screwball comedy, set in the 1950s, and made in the 1990s, with a look all it's own. But, how does it stack up with other Coen brothers movies? Would this go to the top of the list? Or should you avoid this one and watch Fargo again? Over the last several years, the shape and size of mounts used in residential solar projects have changed to a lower profile attachment that can be installed over the shingle instead of slid underneath like metal flashing sheets. The next obstacle in residential solar design was expanding these top-mounted attachments that could primarily be installed on rafters onto the decking surface of the roof. Ryan Estrada, technical program outreach manager, and Nico Martinez, senior product manager at Unirac, are here to discuss what's new with solar mounting and, more specifically, the advancement of direct-to-deck attachments.
What's not to love about sequels? We get what we loved in the past and we know how much it's going to be great! In that spirit, we are rejoined by comic artist and novelist Ryan Estrada to partake in Gremlins 2. Sony really wanted Genndy Tartakovsky to direct Hotel Transylvania so they said they'd let him direct a Popeye movie if he did that for them. Would it surprise you that they didn't hold to their word? The only evidence of Tartakovsky's (possible) "vision" is this strange animatic illegally leaked from the studio, which, if you watch it, makes you a felon. How much does it reflect Tartakovsky's vision and how much does it reflect meddling by studio stooges? Cartoonist Ryan Estrada joins us to look at the Popeye animatic!
[School of Movies 2023] A long-planned return to a far-too-often overlooked Disney animated classic released quietly in 1995. A passion project of Jeffrey Katzenberg that wound up being helmed by Kevin Lima, director of Tarzan and later Enchanted. From the outside it seems like a fun finale to the 78-episode syndicated wacky animated show 'Goof Troop', but as it turns out, this one hit way closer to home than most of Disney's more fantastical fare for a lot of kids who grew up watching it on VHS and DVD and love it intensely. I've promised Daniel Floyd of Extra Frames that if we ever covered it he would be there, and thanks to Ryan Estrada of Big Data (who adores it just as much) we have ourselves a fascinating, in-depth dive into a surprisingly emotionally complex road-trip. Hey friends. I was lucky enough to talk with author and illustrator Ryan Estrada. I've been releasing episodes about banned books called Banned Book Club, it is currently Banned Book Week, and him and his wife wrote a fantastic graphic novel titled Banned Book Club. Did I say banned book enough? Their book is based on his wife, Kim Hyun Sook's, real experiences with banned books in South Korea in the early 80's. I loved this book and am honored that Ryan was willing to talk to me for a little while. He also gives us top secret information about his upcoming releases. Ok, not really top secret, he was more than willing to share the info. Find Ryan on his Twitter and ryanestrada.com to keep up with him and his fantastic work. Find Banned Book Club here at Bookshop to support indie bookshops. Go to Ko-fi or Buy Me A Coffee to support this podcast. You can donate, commission, or subscribe if you want cool benefits that the others won't get. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Today's Life Athlete is Ryan Estrada. This is Ryan's second appearance on the podcast and we did it shortly after my skull fracture while he was in Bali. Ryan is nearly impossible to categorise as he's a creative whirlwind. He throws himself at live and creative projects with a mix of youthful enthusiasm and mature technical efficiency. From Graphic Novels, to Radio plays, to filmmaking, Ryan has challenged himself and accomplished a lot. This episode is a ballad to anyone wanting to start a thing. I hadn't heard it since we first recorded it nearly two years ago and as I'm taking on new projects now I found it to be a gift from Ryan and my past self to me now. It is also a gift for you and I hope it helps you live a fuller, more delightful, and creative life.

This episode, I have a special guest, Chris (@gokuffy), talking about two adaptations of No Longer Human! The first is Usamaru Furuya's, published by Vertical, then it's Junji Ito's, published by Viz. The song you heard in this episode was "Human After All" by Daft Punk. Next time is an interview with Ryan Estrada, co-writer for Banned Book Club!
I am extremely open about this, but it's not like I yell "I AM KOREAN" at the top of every episode, but I am Korean. I was adopted too, and I don't know much about Korean culture, history, or anything else. Which is why I'm glad books such as Banned Book Club exist, so I can read about some history by way of comics. This time, I'm doing something a little different; I'm interviewing Ryan Estrada, one half of the writing team for Banned Book Club! Here's what the publisher, Iron Circus Comics, has to say about Banned Book Club: The gripping true story of a South Korean woman's student days under an authoritarian regime in the early 1980s, and how she defied state censorship through the rebellion of reading. If you want more interviews with Ryan, and including Kim Hyun Sook, here's two cool interviews, one from Foreword Reviews and one from Rich in Color. The song you heard in the episode is "Noonside" by Yaeji. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find both of their writing at The Organization of Anti-Social Geniuses, more of Helen's writing at Narrative Investigations, and my writing at the Fandom Post. And you can find my review of Banned Book Club on the Fandom Post. Listen Show notes: There are no show notes; I just interviewed Ryan about Banned Book Club. Next time is Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart and I Married My Best Friend to Shut My Parents Up, actually.
We spoke with Ryan Estrada (@ryanestrada) about the differences between South Korea and the United States’ handling of the covid-19 crisis, as you might imagine, it’s stark. We also talked about his influential twitter project @forexposure_txt as well as the new book he penned with his wife, Kim Hyun Sook, chronicling her antifascist political awakening … Continue reading "Episode 75 – South Korea vs USA with Ryan Estrada"
Time Codes: 00:00:27 - Introduction 00:03:15 - September? 00:05:24 - E.T. Girl 00:30:42 - Bicycle Boy 00:59:23 - Broken Telephone 01:23:16 - Wrap up 01:25:02 - Contact us On the September webcomics show, Sean and Derek look at three intriguing titles. They begin with E.T. Girl, written and illustrated by theplanetsdreamer (and whose real name is Kimberly Kotschi). This is a relatively new webcomic, a mix of sci-fi and fantasy, and plays upon the alien abduction convention. After that they check out Jackarais's Bicycle Boy, a work that has been going on for over 5 years. However, the narrative is well-paced and with incredible art. This is also a sci-fi story, but one set in an a post-apocalyptic future with a cyborg as its protagonist. The Two Guys wrap up the episode with the already-completed Broken Telephone, a unique series of interconnected storylines that become more solidly interwoven as the webcomic progresses. Ryan Estrada is the writer of all the storylines, but with each installment, 18 in all, he uses a different artist or artistic team to express his narrative vision.
