In this episode, Letty sits down with Roni MacRuairi (Vocals) and Shane Martin (Guitars) from Words That Burn – one of Ireland's most powerful modern metal acts. We caught up right before their explosive set at a packed Academy in Dublin, supporting the UK's Heriot and Swedish heavyweights Thrown on their first-ever Irish show. Make sure to check out their latest release Cut Throat Culture, and don't forget to catch them live in Belfast, September 6th at Voodoo, alongside Haint and From Ruins. If you love heavy riffs, big choruses, and Irish metal on the rise, this episode is for you.
Matthew Sparks and Oliva Sizemore join Jana Byars for a fun, chilling, and thoughtful discussion about about Haint Country: Dark Tales from the Hills and Hollers (University Press of Kentucky, 2024). The hills of the Appalachia region hold secrets—dark, deep, varied, and mysterious. These secrets are often told in the form of eerie, thrilling, and creepy folk tales that reveal strange sightings, curious oddities, and commonly serve as cautionary tales for eager and curious ears. These spine-tingling stories have been told and retold by family members, neighbors, and "hillfolk" for generations. Haint Country: Dark Folktales from the Hills and Hollers is a collection of weird, otherworldly, and supernatural phenomenon in Eastern Kentucky—tales that have been recorded and documented for the first time. Collected and adapted by Matthew Sparks and Olivia Sizemore, the anthology explores stories of ghosts or "haints," strange creatures or "boogers," haunted locations or "stained earth," uncanny happenings or "high strangeness," and humorous Appalachian ghost stories. Contemporary yarns of black panthers, demons, and sightings of ghostly coal miners are narrated in the first person, reflecting the style and dialect of the collected oral history. Though comprised of a mixture of claimed accounts and fabricated lore, the locations and people woven throughout are very real. Complemented with evocative watercolor illustrations by Olivia Sizemore (who was inspired by the work of Stephen Gammell) and a compendium that provides additional context, Haint Country is a thrilling and bone-chilling excursion to the spooky corner of Appalachia. It was a pleasure to welcome Jim Knights (Guitars) & Chris Taylor (Vocals) of Manchester based The Leviathan onto the show for the first time. The Leviathan, who play extreme based metal with a healthy dose of doom infused groove, released the well received 'In Darkness It Crawls' on August 22, 2013 and then went on a hiatus for a couple of years. Members moved on to different projects and some dropped entirely out the scene. Jim however kept the fire lit throughout and finally the band returned with three killer singles in three months this year. More so a project that a functioning band at the moment, Jim got Chris of Cairns to do vocals and Darren of Haint to do bass/vocals on the new releases. We run through the story of The Leviathan from the very beginning, where Chris and Jim met in university, right up to recording together this year. The lads have plenty of great insights and stories from their various bands and there's even a Christmas cover song to discover. Hope you enjoy the episode and 'SUBSCRIBE' to the channel. Black History Month proceeds with another Blaxploitation film based on a literary classic. This film has a LOT to say about black identity, and the duality that permeates the black consciousness. So we are glad to have Christy here to help us break it down. Also this was directed by William Crane, the same guy that gave us Blacula, so expect some similar themes. Both good and bad. Ghosts come in many forms. In Chesya Burke's story “Haint Me Too,” this ghost is of the angry kind. She haunts the Myrtle House, a Southern plantation home, inhabited by “the Perfect Southern American Dream” (“father, mother, three boys and two girls”). Young Shea, the daughter of a Black sharecropping family living on the land, witnesses the haint that lives in Myrtle House. She sees its terror–and its power. And soon, events unfold that force Shea to seek out that exact power. Read Hex Life for this story. Recommended in this episode: Showtime's Yellowjackets and Root Magic by Eden Royce UP NEXT: R. A. Alex Jennings is a writer/editor/teacher/poet living in New Orleans. He was born in Wiesbaden (Germany) and raised in Gaborone (Botswana), Tunis (Tunisia), Paramaribo (Surinam) and the United States. He constantly devours pop culture and writes mostly jokes on Twitter (@magicknegro). He loves music, film, comix, and even some TV. He's going a little nuts shut up in his Central City apartment, but thankfully he has two of the best roommates on earth (one of whom is a beautiful beautiful dog named Karate Valentino. His debut novel, The Ballad of Perilous Graves is due out from Redhook in 2022. You can also find him goofing around on Instagram: (@magicknegro) Nola is a city full of wonders. A place of sky trolleys and dead cabs, where haints dance the night away and Wise Women help keep the order. To those from Away, Nola might seem strange. To Perilous Graves, it's simply home. In a world of everyday miracles, Perry might not have a talent for magic, but he does know Nola's rhythm as intimately as his own heartbeat. So when the city's Great Magician starts appearing in odd places and essential songs are forgotten, Perry realizes trouble is afoot. Nine songs of power have escaped from the piano that maintains the city's beat, and without them, Nola will fail. Unwilling to watch his home be destroyed, Perry will sacrifice everything to save it. But a storm is brewing, and the Haint of All Haints is awake. Nola's time might be coming to an end.

Join my guest D and me, as he talks about his life as a hoodoo practitioner, coming from a long line of hoodoo midwives and healers. He talks about the Boo-hag, Haint's, Plat-eyes, and spirit tricksters. He talks about things his grandmother taught him and many other things. A bit of the History of Hoodoo and how it came into being with the enslaved people in the US. Really an interesting conversation. EVEN how we met was really interesting. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/walking-the-shadowlands/message

Thinking about painting your porch ceiling a special color? Listen first before you do to find out if haint blue is right for your home!
The British didn't say ghost. They said haunt or spectre. If you read Chaucer, Shakespeare, or Sir Thomas More, they mention haunt. “Haint” is the Gullah dialect for "haunt”. Haint blue keeps the haints out.
