Our October horror shows roll on as Byrd, Tom, and Kevin are joined by Chris Marti (musician alias "Cosmic Monster" and co-writer of The Author vs. the Werewolf) to discuss the fantasy/horror of Wicked City!  Based on a series of novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi (Vampire Hunter D), Wicked City is about the rift between humanity and a secret society of interdimensional demons.  We start with 1987's cult classic anime film from Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust) and move onto 1992's live action version produced in Hong Kong (co-produced by Toho).  Both adaptations are bonkers, so we have a lot to discuss including the anime's problematic sexual politics, phallic tentacle creatures, spider women, handover era Hong Kong cinema, sentient pinball machines, horny elevator monsters, and more.  But first, we discuss the recent passing of legendary Showa era monster maker Keizo Murase.  Relax and enjoy the conversation.

In the dark realms of irrationality, mysticism, and lust, red demons snake and throb through the blue haze. They hunger for the old man lounging in the backseat as we speed through the wicked city. Unknown to us, elsewhere and in another time, his spirit is poisoning a pure soul, moving it across the board towards checkmate. He says we must fight poison with poison and cure poison with love. He smiles to himself and says that we must send them back to their golden hell. "A Tokugawa government spy wants to hire me?!"

The first being Wicked City, a movie about a man and a demon fighting for peace between their worlds, and the terrorists of the demon world seeking to undo the treaty that would create such a peace. While its lovingly rendered and visually lovely, it's also…. kind of a porno. and not a loving consensual porno. not always. This movie is well regarded and led to some big career opportunities for the people involved, so it has a degree of importance. It mostly serves as a reminder of tonal inconsistency, missed opportunities, and the writers not-at-all-disguised fetish. We have merch now! She's consequently not able to join us on the regular for the next part of our Berlin campaign, but we're sure you'll join us in wishing her well on her adventures and hoping she can come back soon to play with us! Thus, we have had to make some changes in how we are doing things on our end, at least for the time being. Here's the breakdown: We'll be reducing our release frequency to every two weeks, rather than every week, in order to rebuild a buffer, and rush less with recording and editing. We'll be tweaking our patreon offerings to make our bonus content more accessible.  Beyond The Madness, our post-recording chit-chat show, will soon also be available at the Cult Initiate tier! The Cult Elder and Avatar tiers will continue to have exclusive access to our bonus game-play.
