Harvey Cushing: A Biography By John F. Fulton Read by Edison McDaniels, MD Coming soon to Audible! The 1946 biography of Harvey Cushing by John Fulton on audiobook for the first time ever! “The Power of One, the Impact of Many.” For neurosurgery, there is no individual who encapsulates the power of one better than Harvey Cushing. Cushing (1869-1939) is the founding father of modern neurosurgery and was remarkably productive even by today's standards. It is estimated that in addition to everything else he accomplished, he wrote the equivalent of 1,000 words a day for the entirety of his 70 years on this earth. He also operated on over 2,000 brain tumors (less than 5 attempts had been made to operate on any brain tumor before him, only one successfully). This was at a time without antibiotics, specialized imaging, blood transfusions, intensive care units, or anything more than primitive early anesthetic techniques. He quite literally invented modern brain surgery. HARVEY CUSHING, A BIOGRAPHY, by John Fulton.  • This is the definitive biography of Harvey Cushing, published in 1946. • First time ever on audio! • This is not an AI production. The voice is mine, and all technical aspects of the production are my own work. I am a team of 1. This is a highly polished presentation. • The audiobook is 45 hours in length..  • Listeners can go directly to individual chapters or any of the excerpts or bonus materials. The Story of a Great Medical Pioneer Written in 1946 by the eminent scholar and physiologist John F. Fulton, a man who knew and worked alongside Cushing, this is the definitive biography of one of the most significant figures in the history of medicine and surgery. Cushing's legacy is present in every operating room in the world everyday, for he was much more than the father of modern neurosurgery: among other innovations, he was the first to follow blood pressure during surgery and the first to develop a practical means of doing so. He was a pioneer in electrocautery, otherwise known as the electric knife, which is used in most operations today to control bleeding. He worked out the relationship between gigantism and pituitary tumors. These are just a few of the numerous innovations and discoveries he is credited with. He counted among his friends and patients many of the foremost physicians, statesmen, scientists, and scholars of his time. One of his daughter's married FDR's son. Included among the correspondence here are notes and letters with Sir William Osler (the father of modern internal medicine), Walter Reed (the man who conquered Yellow Fever), William H. Taft, The Mayo Brothers (founders of The Mayo Clinic), William Halsted (the father of modern surgery), and many, many more. This work will be of great interest to neurosurgeons, medical students, nurses, neurosurgical physician associates, medical product reps, and anyone with any interest in the history of medicine. Cushing knew everybody who was anybody in medicine during the first third of the 20th century and it's all described here in remarkable prose. There is much material here on the founding of the Johns Hopkins Medical School as well as the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. Includes the founding of the the Cushing Brain Tumor Archive at Yale and The Harvey Cushing Society, now known as the AANS. It will be easily accessible and can be listened to in piecemeal fashion, such as to and from work for 10 minutes at a time, or on a long car ride or when traveling by plane for hours. A surprising amount of Cushing's advice remains relevant to today's physicians in general and neurosurgeons in particular. I am a board certified neurosurgeon. I am also an accomplished audiobook narrator. I developed this over the years as a hobby that I could work at at any hour of the day or night amidst the busy schedule of a practicing neurosurgeon. I have a professional recording studio in my home and have recorded over 50,000 minutes of spoken word audio.

THE GROWTH OF TRUTH The 1906 Harveian Oration by William Osler This will interest anyone interested in science or history in general. The Growth of Truth discusses the evolution of knowledge in medicine, using Harvey's pivotal discovery of the circulation of the blood as the prime example of how seemingly sudden advances in medicine and science don't just happen, but come about only when the ground has been plowed and is ready for seed.   This masterful lecture was presented by Dr. William Osler, the father of modern clinical medicine, on October 18th 1906 as the Harveian Oration, a yearly lecture held at the Royal College of Physicians in London, first instituted by William Harvey, the discoverer of the circulation of the blood, 1656. Initially mandated to be given in Latin, since 1865 it has been presented in English.  The Growth of Truth is presented in full, unabridged form. Haematomyelia from Gunshot Wounds of the Spine. A Report of Two Cases, with Recovery following Symptoms of Hemilesion of the Cord. by Harvey Cushing, MD. Read by Edison McDaniels Listen at https://on.soundcloud.com/EhG7r On January 1st, 1896, Wilhelm Roentgen presented the first ever x-ray, an image of his wife Anna's left hand. Later that year, a young doctor by the name of Harvey Cushing—who would go on to become one of the most prolific surgeons in history and the father of modern neurosurgery, produced the image on the cover of this audiobook, the first ever clinical x-ray (they called them roentgenograms back then) of a gunshot wound to the neck and spine.  Harvey Cushing would go on to become the most noted neurosurgeon in the world and the father of modern brain surgery. He was relentless in his quest for perfection in everything he did. Along the way, his compassion, incredible powers of observation, profound stamina and fortitude, and an unrelenting tenacity in the face of even the most vexing clinical problems, all combined with a skill for writing that would have made him a world class author in whatever field he took up, led him to keep copious notes and diaries. He published many professional articles and several monographs in his lifetime. The one herein voiced was the first. Lee's Lieutenants — A Study in Command, Vol 1 Written by Douglas Southall Freeman Read by Edison McDaniels Listen to this extraordinary audiobook — the original unabridged edition — at https://on.soundcloud.com/Ux2x3 In 1934, Douglas Southall Freeman published his definitive four volume study on RE Lee. He had intended to move on to another part of American history after that, but discovered he could not move on without studying Lee's subordinates in command, his lieutenants in the War Between the States. The result was this equally exhaustive three volume study of the command structure of the Army of Northern Virginia. Over 2,100 pages in length, and written in Freeman's usual novelistic prose, this stunning work brings the listener onto the battlefield and into the thoughts of those who lead the fight on the Confederate side.  This is a sweeping narrative, a multi-biographical study of those who fought the good fight. They won many victories, but suffered immense casualties and ultimate defeat. It is a story of death and destruction, heroism and stupidity, the characteristics that make great leadership and the flaws that make men mortal.  This is the full three volume work, in all its glory. Not an abridgment. Vol 1: Manassas to Malvern Hill Vol 2: Cedar Mountain to Chancellorsville  Vol 3: Gettysburg to Appomattox

When his Wall Street power-broker brother-the person he blames for the loss of his one true love-shows up destitute at his door after decades of estrangement, Thierry comes face to face with the ghosts of a life frozen in time. Epic in scope yet intimate in detail, The Wages of Grace asks the universally human questions of not only whether healing and forgiveness are possible, but ultimately, are they worth the cost?   Reviews: “I couldn't put it down. It is an excellent story that gives you hope.”   “A book that resonates with me always leaves me thinking about a lesson learned. Mr. Dragons book reminded me that while I have regretted not offering forgiveness to some, I have never regretted offering forgiveness to anyone. Well written and compelling.”   “A must read....I inevitably skip pages when reading a book. Not a page skipped here. With real and unique characters, the story is very relatable. I will look for more from this author.”   “I love this book. Very well written and wonderfully engaging! Today, on the Surgical Fiction Podcast, chapter 1 of Brandan Dragan's exceptional literary novel, THE WAGES OF GRACE. The book is available if not right now, then very shortly, from Audible. Perhaps what I loved best about narrating this book is the beautiful writing. There is a beautiful story, but for it to really shine—and this shines mightily—one has to have the words to polish that shine. So often we read a book and can say it was good, but in retrospect it could have been so much better. That better comes in the arrangement and use of words on the page to not just tell a story but to sing it to us. Such books may have horrendous content, Cormac McCarthy's brilliant but horrifying novel Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West is one such example, but the writing transcends the subject matter and sings to us. Every word transports us. We feel the highs and lows, the agony and the passion, the goodness and badness of every instant. The author, through their writing, does not just carry us along, they embrace us. The unwritten pact between author and reader [wherein the reader agrees to come along for the ride and the author promises that ride will be not only worth the reader's time and effort, it will be satisfying as well] is fully realized in such books.  I thought The Wages of Grace was quite well written and fully satisfying. There was nothing that rang as false. Thierry's world was fully realized. It's a lovely book, and ultimately a love story between a man and...well, I'll let the reader/listener decide. The full unabridged production of THE WAGES OF GRACE is available on Audible today. https://www.audible.com/pd/B0BFBZZJP1?qid=1663200125&sr=1-16&ref=a_search_c3_lProduct_1_16&pf_rd_p=83218cca-c308-412f-bfcf-90198b687a2f&pf_rd_r=PT0FBSQRNKNBDRHMVJSX To hear more from Edison, listen to all episodes of THE SURGICAL FICTION PODCAST, right now right here! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-surgical-fiction-podcast/id1547756675 #podcast #audio #audiobook #Audible #fiction #nonfiction ★★★★★

Chapter 1 of Blood Work by Jeff Johnston

Blood Work by Jeff Johnston Narrated by Edison McDaniels Reverend Blake Hardesty has lived the life of Job. His parents were killed in a fire when he was seven. The aunt who raised him died just before he graduated from the seminary. His wife was killed during a bank robbery only a year ago. And a diagnosis of brain cancer is only the latest in a long line of hardships he's had to endure. Yet he continues to preach faith in God to a dwindling congregation, sharing his life with his teenage daughter, Bethany, who seems to blame him for her mother's death. If it weren't for the angel who protects him from the beast who fills his dreams, he would be completely alone. But when trying to help a disturbed congregant makes him the victim of a vicious attack, he realizes that the angel may not be able to protect him any longer from the beast - the wolf - that is now growing inside him. Scott Draven has been looking for a higher power all his life. He thought he'd found a path to the Almighty via Bluejay and his followers, and his message of power through cannibalism. With each meal, Draven's powers grow, changing him into a new being and, he's convinced, bringing him even closer to God. One more home invasion, one more family on whom to feed, and then it will be time for him to move on from Bluejay. But when Scott learns about the man who can change into a beast, he knows he must find him. He is convinced that communion with him will be the final step he needs to find God and gain ultimate power.  When the two finally meet, tragedy pushes Blake over the edge and into the arms of the beast. The werewolf - the lycanthrope - has been in existence for thousands of years, as much a child of God as any human, or any of his creatures. And now, while Blake, in his new form, is intent on using the time he has left to be God's ultimate warrior against those who prey on the weak and innocent, Scott Draven is more determined than ever to track Blake down, this time to devour him, and make the creature's power his own. No matter what it takes. Excerpt narrated by Edison McDaniels Butter Bar By William Peter Grasso Vietnam 1967: Jif Miles may be a military legacy, descended from proven warriors—his father is a retired general, his mother a former guerilla fighter—but in country, he's just another second lieutenant, a green rookie wearing that gold insignia of rank dismissively known as the butter bar. Combat leaders aren't born, though; they're made. As the strategic misconceptions of the American high command trigger major battles in the Central Highlands, the deadly trials that will mold Jif Miles into a soldier and leader of men come at a blistering pace. But when those battles end, his tour of duty—and the war—will be far from over. There'll be more trials lurking for him at every turn of the calendar. A lifelong student of history, William Peter Grasso served in the US Army and is retired after a career in the aircraft maintenance industry. His devotion to all things historical, military, and aviation remains unabated and continues to inspire his fiction.

An excerpt from Plague Years: A Doctor's Journey Through the AIDS Crisis By Ross A. Slotten, MD Narrated by Edison McDaniels In 1992, Dr. Ross A. Slotten signed more death certificates in Chicago—and, by inference, the state of Illinois—than anyone else. As a family physician, he was trained to care for patients from birth to death, but when he completed his residency in 1984, he had no idea that many of his future patients would be cut down in the prime of their lives. Among those patients were friends, colleagues, and lovers, shunned by most of the medical community because they were gay and HIV positive. Slotten wasn't an infectious disease specialist, but because of his unique position as both a gay man and a young physician, he became an unlikely pioneer, swept up in one of the worst epidemics in modern history. Plague Years is an unprecedented first-person account of that epidemic, spanning not just the city of Chicago but four continents as well. Slotten provides an intimate yet comprehensive view of the disease's spread alongside heartfelt portraits of his patients and his own conflicted feelings as a medical professional, drawn from more than thirty years of personal notebooks. In telling the story of someone who was as much a potential patient as a doctor, Plague Years sheds light on the darkest hours in the history of the LGBT community in ways that no previous medical memoir has. “Plague Years is a remarkable book. At once the story of a disease and a very personal and reflective memoir, 200-some pages written in a powerful narrative style at once artful and enlightening. . . .There are many truths in this stunning and important book. And there's also hope.” -- Rick Kogan ― Chicago Tribune “[A] powerful, humane and stylish memoir.” ― Nature "This medical memoir will be welcomed as a timely and thought-provoking read." ― Choice “Slotten's memoir of caring for AIDS patients in Chicago in the 1980s and 1990s, Plague Years, could not be more timely. . . . San Francisco and New York City have long been cast as the epicenters of the AIDS epidemic, but Slotten provides a history of another major urban center coming to grips with an illness that was unexpected and misunderstood. . . .He is unflinching in examining his own psychology, the mechanisms he erected to protect himself, articulating his sense of deficiency in a bracing confessional tone. . . What loudly echoes from Slotten's account is the commitment of caregivers to confront the uncertainty of a contagious disease.” -- Jerome Groopman ― The New York Review of Books

Part of this is to unify Taiwan by force. They believe the best model for accomplishing their wider goals is to copy the comprehensive moves by Imperial Japan in 1941-1942. The CCP/PLA thinks they can replicate the successes of the Japanese, while, at the same time, eliminate the failures. By means of subterfuge, they strike their East Asian neighbors, Western Pacific sea lanes, and the key American naval bases in Hawaii, Japan, Australia, and the United States. They rely on advanced missile and drone technology and are initially successful. This novel is a cautionary tale that warns us of the current, comprehensive threat, that is Communist China today. Mike is descended from two maternal great-great grandfathers who came to California seeking different kinds of treasure: One came looking for gold during the 1850 gold rush--and found enough to return east, marry his sweetheart, and then return to establish a livery stable in Gilroy. The second came west with a government survey party in 1856, and found land for a homestead in northern California. Mike's paternal grandfather visited Oakland in 1900, and in the absence of lake-effect snow, decided the Bay Area was pretty close to paradise. His parents met during WWII in Monterey, and Mike was born there in 1952. After two stints in seminary, Mike joined the U.S. Army as a chaplain in 1980, and served three voluntary overseas tours in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt, in South Korea near the DMZ, and in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. A long-term interest in Vietnam caused Mike to leave the army in 1994 when the American embargo lifted, and he spent parts of the next 25 years first creating jobs in the urban areas, and later doing humanitarian work among the rural and remote poor--especially in the tribal areas along the Lao and China borders. Covid shutdowns in Vietnam forced Mike to stay home in California for a season, and he is now writing books full time. John Chase, newly married and just back from his honeymoon, doesn't have a moment to settle into life with his new bride before being called back to duty. Warlords are seizing control of a Central African nation and what had begun as a limited conflict is quickly ramping up to full-scale genocide. On orders of the president, he leads a Delta Force team to join up with a squad from the Australian Special Air Service Regiment, who are already on the ground. Together, they have one mission: Stop the wholesale slaughter of innocents by any means necessary. But things are not as they seem.  For those listeners who are familiar with the V Plague series, this is the story of John and Lucas Martin that was referenced in the novel Recovery: V Plague, Book 8. This story is set before the time of the V Plague and can be enjoyed before, during, or after without spoiling any events in the series. HUNTER'S RAIN Written by Dirk Patton Narrated by Edison McDaniels 5.0 out of 5 stars  Read the Prequel to Plague Anytime, But Read It You Must! Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2018 Verified Purchase I finally read the "Hunter's Rain" prequel waiting for Dirk Patton's book 16 of the Plague series. I am glad I finally did read it. In it the author shines a light on what, I hope, has been U.S. military policy to lessen the horrors of genocide in Africa, as this was the mission given John's 4 man team. Hunter's Rain introduces many of the realistic members of John Chase's teams in the Plague series, Nitro, Lucas, Two-step, wife Katie... and others, but not Rachael and Dog. The book ends with Nitro, I think it was, telling John after the mission, "You look like hell. You need a dog". This prompted me to re-read Book 1 of the Plague series. Book 1 introduces John's life after the military when the virus hit; and book 1 introduces unforgettable Rachael and Dog. I got much more out of the re-read of book 1 because of the things Dirk mentioned in "Rain". It seems that Dirk has a sharp skill I don't see in but a handful of authors I read. All authors develop skills, but most others I have read don't quite seem to have the same clue Dirk does. Dirk's books are powerful and emotionally moving; the people in the books become "family"... including Dog. And I do admit, it hurt when Katie, Rachael, Dog, and John died. Patton's books are always great reads that immerse, entertain, and teach. Hard to put down. 5.0 out of 5 stars  Vivid descriptions and a flowing storyline make this an easy one-night read Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2016 Verified Purchase What made John Chase the man we know and cheer for in Dirk Patton's 'V Plague' series? This short novella provides a glimpse at the newly married Army soldier. After hearing rumors in the 'V Plague' series of John's time in Africa, I was whole-heartedly ready to find out. This story is dark, a tragic and sobering look into the horrors that he and his team faced there. The characters' humor thankfully shines through in the lighter moments, but the action and events that the men must witness is saddening. This is also the story that might give a clue to the beginnings of the entire V Plague that threatens to wipe out humanity in the series. Vivid descriptions and a flowing storyline make this an easy one-night read. I'm looking forward to the thirteenth book in the 'V Plague' series, titled 'Exodus'. Now I just have to wait until January, 2017. Internet searches and medical hip shots are as close as he can get to an actual diagnosis. Things get worse when a mysterious blood deposit with no apparent source is found in the middle of his bed. Then there is the intense hunger to contend with, the repeating erotic nightmares and the panic attacks. When the cause of the illness finally manifests, it is wilder than Jack could ever have imagined. The illness has a name. Its name is Jerry. In this short story, meet John Chase before the V Plague apocalypse. He is part of the US Army's Delta Force. In Crucifixion: V Plague, Book 2, he mentions a flashback to running through a Central American jungle with Spetsnaz in pursuit. This is that story.  Note that this is a short story and does not need to be listened to in any particular sequence with the V Plague series. All events are prior to the attacks and events that occur in the series, and this will not spoil that timeline. RULES OF ENGAGEMENT Written by Dirk Patton Narrated by Edison McDaniels 5.0 out of 5 stars Very good intro if you haven't started the series yet... Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2015 Only four stars, because of the length. It is essentially a prequel to the Voodoo Plague series. I had read all the series books but couldn't get enough so I purchased and read this one. The series books are around 350 pages on average so I expected this to be a bit longer, my bad. I can't tell you how great this series is but this stand alone short story will prime you for them or give you an enjoyable read even if you don't continue. (Please read the series, you won't regret it!) Dirk Patton is excellent at giving you all the tools you need for a fantastic mental picture during the read. He makes it so interesting that I have purchased and read all 8 John Chase stories within a month's time. Ill let you in on a secret that is probably most people's circumstance. I read the free editions to a series then base my buying on how good it was. If it was meh then I move on. I almost never wait for a book to be released before moving to a different author, I will be waiting on this next book. That's how good it is! https://www.audible.com/pd/Rules-of-Engagement-A-John-Chase-Short-Story-Audiobook/B093HD95WF?qid=1640323129&sr=1-27&ref=a_search_c3_lProduct_2_7&pf_rd_p=83218cca-c308-412f-bfcf-90198b687a2f&pf_rd_r=6EE06HSAWTDG7837SPRN

Outstanding Portrayal of Emotional Evolution Rebecca Martin is a single mother with an apartment to rent and a sense that she has used up her illusions. I had the romantic thing with my first husband, thank you very much, she tells a hapless suitor. I'm thirty-eight years old, and I've got a daughter learning to read and a job I don't quite like. I don't need the violin music. But when the new tenant in her in-law apartment turns out to be Michael Christopher, on the lam after twenty years in a monastery and smack dab in the middle of a dark night of the soul, Rebecca begins to suspect that she is not as thoroughly disillusioned as she had thought. Her daughter, Mary Martha, is delighted with the new arrival, as is Rebecca's mother, Phoebe, a rollicking widow making a new life for herself among the spiritual eccentrics of the coastal town of Bolinas. Even Rebecca's best friend, Bonnie, once a confirmed cynic in matters of the heart, urges Rebecca on. But none of them, Rebecca feels, understands how complicated and dangerous love actually is. As her unlikely friendship with the ex-monk grows toward something deeper, and Michael wrestles with his despair while adjusting to a second career flipping hamburgers at McDonald's, Rebecca struggles with her own temptation to hope. But it is not until she is brought up short by the realities of life and death that she begins to glimpse the real mystery of love, and the unfathomable depths of faith. Beautifully written and playfully engaging, this novel is about one man wrestling with his yearning for a life of contemplation and the need for a life of action in the world. But it's Rebecca's spirit, as well as her relationships with Mary Martha, Phoebe, her irresponsible surfer ex-husband Rory -- and, of course, the monk downstairs -- that makes this story shine. Reviews: "A charmingly written, gratifyingly hopeful tale." —Publishers Weekly “Farrington writes startlingly well; there are sentences to marvel at on every page.” —Book Street USA The use of letters written by a disillusioned monk to begin sections of the book reveals his initial bitter attitudes toward both himself and the recipient of his letters and gradual mellowing brought about by his relationship with the single mother from whom he rents a small apartment. The premise of the book is one I've not seen before, and it speaks to the universal doubts experienced by many who seek deeper meaning in life. Although there are frequent references to the Catholic Church, this is not an overtly religious book. It does deal with issues common in parenting children of divorced parents, but with wry humor. I particularly appreciated the well constructed story line and evidence of proper editing. I admit to being a member of the grammar police. If you're looking for a story that embraces love in its many forms, I recommend this one. —Amazon reviewer A wonderfully written and narrated story. I read the Monk Downstairs a few years ago and loved it. Mr Farrington's vivid descriptions and skilled narrative really puts you inside the character. Mr. McDaniel's narration really breathes new life into an already fantastic novel. DROP OFF - 5 min audiobook sample

Death waits at the edge of the abyss… Nature morphs and twists, and beasts that shouldn't exist stalk the sea. At the edge of the abyss, where the Blake Plateau abruptly gives way to the deepest parts of the Atlantic Ocean, biologists investigate the largest marine die-off in history. An Everest-style base camp supporting scientists, staff, and eco tourists sits at the edge of the drop off, but the scientific mission turns to one of survival when mutant sea creatures threaten the base. Steven Hunte is a sea dog for hire, an ex-Navy biologist turned environmental activist whose been hired to support scientists studying the die-off. When the base is attacked and overrun Hunte must fight for the sea he loves, or watch it be destroyed along with everyone he cares about. At the drop off the fate of the world's oceans will be decided. DROP OFF Written by Edward J. McFadden III Narrated by Edison McDaniels 5.0 out of 5 stars An action-packed, sea-monster horror story Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2020 Drop Off reads like a horror/action movie. It reminded me of Deep Rising, Deep Blue Sea and Aliens. Though the details about submarines, weapons and ships are rich and complex, lending an air of authenticity, the plot is straightforward and visceral. While investigating a mysterious die-off of marine life in the Atlantic, ex-soldier Steven Hunte and an odd assortment of sailors, eco tourists and marine biologists stumble across a new, mutated species of sea spider. At first, they try to bring one of the creatures aboard their floating base to study, but then everything quickly goes to hell. With a massive storm rolling in, swarms of the creatures begin to attack. From that point forward, it's a non-stop fight for survival. I found Drop Off entertaining and engaging, with plenty of mayhem and monsters to go around. There are a few places where the characters info-dump facts about the ocean that the other characters would probably already know, and a moment or two in which the motives and the sheer quantities of the attacking sea spiders strained my credulity--but no more than is typically the case in a fun, action-oriented, horror/thriller film. Overall, lots of fun for what it is--a blood-soaked battle at sea with lots of gore and a high body-count. And, I liked that the mystery of the origin of the monsters is addressed rather than left an open question. I always find that more satisfying than when stuff goes unexplained. https://www.audible.com/pd/Drop-Off-Audiobook/B09MZPFB71?qid=1640321393&sr=1-14&ref=a_search_c3_lProduct_1_14&pf_rd_p=83218cca-c308-412f-bfcf-90198b687a2f&pf_rd_r=A5ADJ831MG601XQSXJGY
