A note from Berly and LA: The Tipsy Exchange is on hiatus while we focus on our new project, Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast (stupid day jobs, keeping us from podcasting full time). Some of our episodes, particularly the AMAs and happy hours, didn't survive our move to a new hosting platform, but we managed to save this one for you. Come hang out with us at Denim-wrapped Nightmares, and in the meantime, the rest of the Tipsy Exchange back catalog is here waiting for you. Cheers!Pour one more, because it's happy hour! To close out the year, Berly and LA look back at the episodes we recorded, share updates on what's happened since, and own up to a few tipsy mistakes along the way.First, the things that made us happy lately. There's a Christmas tree debate (one of us loves decorating, and one of us… really does not), a sexy Santa showdown, some strong opinions on Harry Styles vs. the older gentlemen of Hollywood, and a Chris Evans relationship update that had Twitter in a tizzy. We also have a satirical article about the Illuminati that made us chuckle. Then we run through the season's episodes. Berly gives her spoiler-free review of The Rings of Power season one, with one very specific complaint about elf hair. We check in on the Somerton Man (sadly, no update), and share a big development in the UFO world since our revisited episode. LA also finally started the new Interview with the Vampire series. (She was supposed to finish it. She did not.) We react to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Did Namor's ankle wings live up to the hype? Did we cry? You'll have to listen. Plus, we share news about The Sandman and some heartbreaking news about Lovecraft Country, including what the showrunner had planned for season two.And of course, there are corrections. It turns out one of the shows we talked about wasn't called what we said it was. And we owe a certain Supernatural actor an apology about his shirt-to-shirtless ratio. This week's toast: Cheers to everything that made us happy this season, including Namor, the Winchester boys, and all of you for listening!Tell us what you think! On this episode, Berly and LA went into the archives and pulled out another previously unpublished episode. For this throwback, they discuss the 2020 HBO drama series, Lovecraft Country. Editor's note: This episode was recorded before Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault and harassment against a former partner in December 2023. Our comments about him in this episode don't reflect how we feel today. This one's for you, Twitter! Lovecraft Country is the first episode topic ever recommended by a listener, and Berly has been trying to get everyone to watch this show. LA finally did. Only one other person she asked actually followed through. We see you.Fair warning: that first episode will have you wondering if you started the wrong show. Stick with it. We talk about why Lovecraft Country could have gone completely off the rails and didn't. We cover the historical events it weaves in (some of which we're embarrassed to admit we never learned in school), the production design, the monsters (the creature with all the eyes has a surprising real-life reference), and the most terrifying pair of little girls on television. We also talk about the episode that took a beloved character on a wild journey through time with a nod to a certain '80s adventure franchise. And the wigs. So many fabulous wigs. Then Berly gives LA a crash course on H.P. Lovecraft himself: who he was, what his work meant to horror, and why his legacy is… complicated. She also explains how the author of Lovecraft Country turned that legacy on its head. We compare the show to the book, too, from the characters the series reimagined to one who doesn't exist in the book at all. Plus, the music! Somehow the modern needle drops work here in a way they absolutely did not in Baz Luhrmann's Gatsby.Along the way, you'll hear a confession about looking up spoilers, a plea to showrunner Misha Green for more redheads, and our hopes for another season.Spoiler warning: We spoil the whole series in this one, so watch it first if you care! This week's toast: From episode seven of Lovecraft Country: "Here's to girls like us who know when to create and when to destroy." Salute! Cheers!Tell us what you think! Did you watch Lovecraft Country? What was your favorite episode, and which monster freaked you out the most? What should we cover next? Vampire month rolls on! Last episode, we covered the movies that got us hooked (and possibly warped us a little). This week, it's time for our favorite vampires in media. Berly tried to pick some LA hadn't heard of. LA did not try to do that. At all. Each host brings three favorites. LA starts with the vampire who inspired her childhood obsession: a little girl who will never grow up but is definitely a grown woman on the inside. We discuss how the new series may change her, and LA admits she's a harsh critic. Then there's the scene-stealing Greek vampire from a certain mockumentary series who LA would watch even if they killed off everyone else. She's also the reason LA got over the show adding a woman to the original trio. Finally, LA picks a campy, dramatic Netflix heir whose "best friendship" with a werewolf was, uh, very close. (Berly would like everyone to know LA missed the subtext. Again.)Berly opens with a deep cut: a movie about the making of one of the oldest vampire films ever, with a twist that's so good she paid $50 for the DVD. Next is the leather-clad, gun-toting heroine who, when everyone else wanted to be a Trinity, Berly wanted to be. And finally, as LA knew she would, Berly brings the hard-partying Irish vampire from a certain comic book adaptation. She has a picture of him. Of course she does. Then we fire off our honorable mentions, including several True Blood favorites, a certain bleached-blond Buffy vampire (until season six), a daywalker, and an energy vampire who sucks the life out of every room.Along the way, we try to figure out whether Matt Smith is hot (it depends on the scene), there's a naked Jensen Ackles sighting, and we finally settle the Arwen and Aragorn family tree debate from our Morgoth episode. Plus, a reminder that Idiocracy is slowly becoming a documentary. This week's toast: From Deacon in the What We Do in the Shadows movie: "When you turn into a vampire, you become very sexy." Cheers! And we close with a quote from Eric Northman: "When you dream of me, dream of nice things."Tell us what you think! Who's your favorite vampire of all time? Did we miss yours? (Be honest.) Team Eric or Team Bill? Tell us in the comments! Please drink (or bite) responsibly.Miss Berly and LA? October is here (the best month, besides our birthday month), and AMC's Interview with the Vampire series is about to premiere. So naturally, we're declaring October vampire month! This is part one of our Vampires in Media series, and we're starting with the stories that got us hooked.First, some real-life vampire news. Archaeologists in Poland uncovered a 17th-century grave where the villagers clearly did not want the woman buried there getting back up. The details are wild, and Sam and Dean would have handled it way differently. Then we each confess our first vampire obsession. LA's is Interview with the Vampire, the 1994 movie she made all her friends watch (repeatedly), and the reason why involves some serious feelings she's not quite ready to unpack on air. She also has thoughts on the new series cast and how they aged up a certain character. Berly's is Bram Stoker's Dracula, which fueled a childhood vampire-hunting phase that her dad supported way more than you'd expect. She also shares a story that'll make you look at Dracula differently: Bram Stoker claimed his novel wasn't fiction, and his research trail is as spooky as the book itself. Plus, we rank the cast of both movies (Gary Oldman! Brad Pitt! Antonio Banderas deserved more screen time!) and gently acknowledge that Keanu has had better roles. We also ask the big question: were the movies we watched as '80s and '90s kids way too adult for us? (Our moms rented us some interesting choices.) And we'd like to thank all of these films for being very, very horny. This week's toast: From Lestat himself: "Don't be a fool for the devil, darling." Cheers! And we close with some wisdom from Bram Stoker: "We learn from failure, not from success."Tell us what you think! What was your first vampire obsession? Are you watching the new Interview with the Vampire series? And be honest: what totally inappropriate movie did your parents let you watch as a kid? Tell us in the comments, and come back for part two, where we reveal our favorite vampires! Please drink (or bite) responsibly. They're baaack! Paul Rudd may have won People's Sexiest Man Alive, but let's be honest, our honor is way better. People just says "you're sexy." We have criteria. Welcome to the 2022 Andy Nominations! If you're new here: it all started with Spartacus star Andy Whitfield. Back before the internet told us everything about everyone, we decided he rescued puppies, read to children, and would never do anything shady. Andy would never. From that beautiful delusion came the Andy factor: a man who's attractive, nice, delightful, and yes, yummy. Before we get to this year's nominees, we honor the man who started it all with a sweet story from someone who knew him. This year, each host nominates three men. LA brings an Oscar winner with a very calm, very soothing energy (and a surprising college athlete past), an Aussie god who is basically the perfect specimen of a man, and a sitcom sweetheart who turned out to be a sneaky, sexy action star. Berly brings the one she's been obsessed with forever (his haters are wrong and she hates them), a former Spider-Man who is finally getting the love he deserves, and a Star Wars pilot whose hair deserves its own award.Along the way, you'll hear about SNL sketches, a very delightful Alan Rickman impression, a red carpet moment that broke the internet, and a pandemic web series that gave us all some much-needed good news. You'll also get what may be the most unhinged pickup line we've ever uttered on this podcast. We regret nothing. This week's toast: Cheers to Andy Whitfield, the man who started it all. Andy forever.Vote for your favorite! Head to our website and cast your vote for the 2022 Andy. Then tell us in the comments who we missed. Who has the Andy factor on your list? And if one of our nominees doesn't deserve it, how dare you. You don't even know Andy. Please drink responsibly.Support the showThe Tipsy Exchange is a comedy podcast where besties Berly and LA pour a drink, raise a toast, and dive into true crime, mysteries, the paranormal, and pop culture, with plenty of tangents along the way.
