Hi Everyone, just coming up for air. This is actually one of the several new episodes that have been available on Patreon and CHP Premium since July, three months ago. This is a brief overview of the life and times of Wang Jingwei, the 中国头号大汉奸. Strong words. Why is he so despised? What drove him to make the decisions he did that forever branded him as a traitor to the Chinese people? He's another figure from those early ROC years that everyone has heard of but perhaps not so sure of the role he played in the history of that era. Enjoy. In this episode, Jeff Bloomfield sits down with Dr. Chris Laszlo—professor, author, and co-founder of the Global Consciousness Institute—to explore a transformative new approach to business leadership. Drawing on decades of research and deep personal reflection, Dr. Laszlo challenges the narrow focus on profit and “sustainability” in favor of something richer: human and organizational flourishing. He introduces concepts from his book Quantum Leadership and shares why a leader's inner world—how they connect with self, others, nature, and transcendence—may hold the key to long-term impact, innovation, and success. If you're a business leader or executive struggling to align purpose with performance, this episode is a must. Laszlo unpacks how emotional connectedness and daily practices rooted in neuroscience, not spreadsheets, create the foundation for true, regenerative leadership. His insights are especially valuable for C-suite leaders, coaches, and culture builders who want to move beyond compliance checklists and unlock real transformation. Sustainability ≠ Flourishing: Laszlo distinguishes between surviving (sustainability) and thriving (flourishing), calling for a more ambitious goal for business. Origin in Philosophy: His father, renowned systems philosopher Ervin Laszlo, sparked early reflections on systems, ethics, and purpose. Early Wake-Up Call: As a teen at a wealthy boarding school, Laszlo realized the disconnect between privilege and global inequality—igniting a lifelong purpose. Economics with a Conscience: Frustrated by ethics being an afterthought in business, he asked: “Why can't doing good be profitable?” Flourishing Requires Inner Transformation: Real change in organizations must begin with how leaders are, not just what they do. Four Connections Matter: Lasting impact comes from daily practices that connect leaders to self, others, nature, and the transcendent. It's Not About Time—It's About Intent: You don't need more hours—just more awareness in how you run meetings, lead conversations, and engage others. Quantum Science Meets Leadership: Emerging science supports the interconnectedness of all things, providing a scientific foundation for humanistic leadership. Daily Practices Matter: Laszlo identified over 110 “connectedness practices”—from running to music to mindful meetings—that enhance leadership capacity. The Future Is Conscious: Through his nonprofit (GCI.Earth), Laszlo works to scale practices that elevate global consciousness in business and beyond. 00:00 – Jeff sets the stage: leadership, communication, and purpose 04:24 – Chris's intro and worldview on business as a force for good 06:17 – Chris's origin story: systems philosophy and a call to make a difference 12:00 – Economic education vs. ethical purpose: the inner conflict 18:28 – Redefining “sustainability” as “flourishing” 23:00 – Neuroscience of emotions: positive attractors, stress, and connectedness 26:00 – Leadership research: over 100 practices of connected CEOs 32:00 – 4 types of connectedness: self, others, nature, transcendence 39:00 – Quantum leadership and global consciousness 43:00 – AI, consciousness, and humanity's next frontier 46:00 – Resources, books, and ways to connect with Chris
Have you ever pondered the profound question—what are you truly doing with what you have? In his latest sermon, Pastor Phil Ayres invites us into the parable of the talents, emphasizing that each person is uniquely created with specific gifts for a divine purpose. Through the captivating story of Laszlo, who unwittingly spent 10,000 Bitcoins on two pizzas, we learn about the value of recognizing what we possess. Phil challenges us to take inventory of our talents—time, skills, and relationships—and use them not out of obligation but out of joyful opportunity. His message resonates deeply within our daily lives as he reminds us that “all I have is from God, and all I have is for God.” Reflecting on the urgency of our call to stewardship, Phil highlights the importance of being faithful rather than flashy, connecting our individual contributions to the collective mission of the church. This sermon is an invitation into greater awareness and intentionality in how we live our faith, encouraging us to step beyond fear and invest our gifts for God's glory. Don't miss out on this empowering message—watch or listen now to ignite your spiritual journey!
Is a Politics of Higher Consciousness, Wholeness, and Love Possible? At the moment, very few are anticipating the advent of a higher political consciousness. How can they be? The US has just joined Russia, North Korea, and Belarus in refusing to condemn aggression on Ukraine, or even to admit it occurred at all. Many Americans and former allies are increasingly fearful that the United States is itself becoming an authoritarian state, joining a wave of authoritarianism sweeping the globe. Such as fear is compellingly real. At the same time, America's sacred intent of unity in diversity, originally inspired by Native America and embodied in the motto E Pluribus Unum, is still attainable. Which way will the United States go? Will it completely devolve into a totalitarian regime, putting the entire world at risk, or will it return to its original sacred purpose of inclusivity and wholeness, even love? To better understand the future, we must examine our past assumptions. It is these unexamined, tacit assumptions that have created our present day reality, often preventing us from realizing our highest aspirations. In this podcast, we will unearth the limits of the mainstream scientific paradigm that sees humanity as separate from nature, and instead reimagine a world that is interconnected, whole, and complete. Life does not have to be seen as a win/lose competition where only the fittest survive, vying for control of limited resources. There is a better and more accurate way to practice politics: as consciousness, collaboration, unity in diversity, even love. Join us on the next episode of the Circle for Original Thinking podcast. We are now reflecting on one of our favorite offbeat mashups: that time we explored What We Do in the Shadows, the mockumentary about New Zealand or Staten Island's most lovable vampire roommates. The movie and later developed TV show actually sucked us into some pretty powerful reflections on teaching and learning. From Colin Robinson's energy vampire tendencies—to Laszlo's chaotic charm and Nandor's eternal quest for finding his why, we found ourselves asking: What does it really mean to lead, to learn, and to live… forever… in the classroom? So let's take time unearthing What We Do in the Shadows of the classroom and see what's changed since we last aired.

Brady Corbet (Vox Lux) has directed a three and a half hour sprawling tale of a Jewish architect named Laszlo (Adrian Brody) who has escaped religious persecution in World War II Europe to come to America. This epic drama kicks off with him arriving at Ellis Island in epic fashion, then restarting his career in Pennsylvania where he encounters a local industrialist named Van Buren (Guy Pearce) who hires him to take on increasingly larger projects. Complications ensue as Laszlo achieves success but also struggles to adapt to an environment which can often be hostile to him, even more-so after his wife Erzsebet (Felicity Jones) is finally able to emigrate from Europe to join him. Since being screened throughout the festival circuit last year (initially without a distributor), this film has received wide acclaim. It has also recently received ten Oscar nominations including for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. But is it WORTHY of such acclaim? Academy Award®-nominated composer Daniel Blumberg joins guest host Jon Burlingame to discuss his evocative and unconventional music for "The Brutalist," directed by Brady Corbet, which earned the film an Oscar® nomination for Best Original Score. Blumberg shares how his long-time friendship with Corbet influenced the creative process, how he crafted the film's musical language using improvisational techniques, and how he recorded some of the score's most striking pieces — including a live jazz sequence and a prepared piano overture, which was played on set to help choreograph the movement of one of the film's opening sequences."[Brady Corbet] wanted to shoot the overture [of] Laszlo leaving the Holocaust behind, arriving in New York, and the optimism of seeing the Statue of Liberty to music. So that was one of my first priorities: To create a demo that would work on set… I had this sample of a piano that I'd prepared in London. This sort of percussive piano where you interfere with the strings… John Cage put screws in between strings, and that was a sound that felt right… A few weeks later, we were playing it really loud on the set. And it was great because the cinematographer could move to the music and Adrian could move to the music and the music could cue the extras… I think it was successful in terms of having an impact for the opening of the film.”—Daniel Blumberg, Composer, "The Brutalist"Be sure to check out “The Brutalist,” now playing in theaters. Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com. I welcomed Wuhan-based Andrew Shaw onto the CHP to talk about his book. It's all about the plundering of China's cultural treasures and imperial artifacts by not just the British, French, and Americans. It seems everyone got in on the act. Even the local people. It's a miracle there was anything left for Chian's museums. Many of you are familiar with the stories about looting that took place in China between the 1840s and the turn of the century. In Andrew Shaw's book, "Spoil" we'll look at the extent of what happened. And on the next episode, we'll feature Andrew again, this time talking about his new book on the history of jade. That's coming February 16th. Of course, Patreon and CHP Premium subscribers will get to hear it a couple weeks earlier. Kenny and Mike review and discuss faith reflected in the Academy Award nominated film starring Adrien Brody. Written, produced and directed by Brady Corbet, the film shows the story of a Hungarian-Jewish holocaust survior, Laszlo Toth (Brody) who imigrates to the United States following World War 2. A renowned architect in Europe, Toth comes to Philadelphia with only a suitcase and an invitation to stay with a cousin who imigrated earlier. After a fallout with his cousin, Toth, living in a shelter, is sought out by industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce) for whom he and his cousin had done work, and was the catalyst for their fallout. Van Buren offers Toth a commission to design a very large civic center and chapel for his hometown outside of Philadelphia. Following an intermission, the second part of the 3 hour 20 minute film begins with the arrival of Laszlo's wife Erzsebeth (Felicity Jones) and Laszlo's niece Zsofia (Raffey Cassidy) who does not speak and cares for Erzsebeth who is confined to a wheelchair as a result of her time in a concentration camp. The film depicts the struggles the Toth's face rebuilding their lives and relationship after a long separation and in the midst of Van Buren's and societal disdain for them. Faith Spotted: Gifts for service to the Church as well as talents in life are given by God. People should be humble in their use and any recognition that comes with the talents and gifts. Gifts to God and communities should be to glorify God and serve the community rather than glorify the individual or family giving it. We are called to be stewards of the gifts and talents God has given us. We are to be truly welcoming and accepting persons of other faiths and cultures including imigrants and refugees who are fleeing danger and or seeking to start a new life. Welcoming includes offering hospitiality and love to others as we do our neighbors.

First off, let me apologize for the less-than-optimal audio quality. This is a very informative interview. And for those of you who missed my very old episode from 2013 or thereabouts covering this topic, this discussion will be a real eye-opener. The history of the Chinese immigrant experience in Mexico (and Latin America) is not that well known. Hugo's ancestors emigrated to Mexico from Guangdong back in the 19th century. One of them, Wong Fook Chun was a major figure in the history of those times and he had an interesting interaction with the Qing-era reformer Kang Youwei. I hope you'll suffer through the lousy audio and that you'll get a lot out of this episode. Chinese-Mexican history was once filled with tragedy and violence. Again, sorry about the audio quality.
