In this episode, we look at one of the lynchpins of modern pop culture--the interconnected horny goth supernatural universe of Anne Rice, the world that launched a thousand ships and may be the origin point for a huge chunk of internet culture! And yes, Philip's going to read every single book and report back to us in another of our patented ongoing multi-part serieses! In this one, we look at the foundational books, Interview With The Vampire and its direct sequels, in the shadow of the current, acclaimed TV adaptation. Do they suck? “I tell kids that books are not there to torment you. The author has to get you in the first ten pages. If they do not, they fail, because a book is like a lawnmower—you pull it, and either it starts or it doesn't start.” –Soman ChainaiSoman Chainani wants reading to feel irresistible. The bestselling author of "The School for Good and Evil," series and the recently released graphic novel, "Coven," shares how his own reading life began—powered by Anne Rice, Michael Crichton, and a complete lack of adult supervision—and how those early obsessions shaped his belief that stories should be bold, boundary-pushing, and personal. In this episode, Soman explains why middle grade books can (and should) feel dangerous, how his grandmother's glamorous storytelling shaped his imagination, and what a book needs to do in its first ten pages to hook a reader. He also unpacks the “moral grayness” that defines his favorite novels and his own writing, and makes a compelling case for why kids need more honesty, not less, in the stories we give them.Tune in for a fast-paced episode that includes Madonna, hot takes, and tips for breaking (all) the rules. ***Soman's reading challenge, Immersive, is all about getting lost in a story. The books he curated blur the line between fiction and reality, pulling the reader in so completely you forget the world around you. Learn more and download Soman's recommended reading list at threadingculturepod.com/soman-chainani***This week's featured librarian is Jasmine Haverly from Aldine Independent School District in Texas. HOUR ONE: Ever heard of Shadrack Ireland? No, it's not a place – it's a person, actually. A preacher – and one of the most bizarre religious leaders ever to walk the soil of New England. And as strange as his religious practices and teachings were – his death was just as crazy. (The Perfect Man) *** Lisa woke up to find her boyfriend staring at her. When she asked him what was wrong, he replied, “I'm going to kill you and drink your blood.” Is it possible that the film, “Interview With The Vampire” made Daniel Sterlin turn into a real-life bloodthirsty monster? (Interview With The Wannabee Vampire) *** Gerald Foos built a secret passageway in his motel – not to smuggle drugs or store weapons, but so he could spy on his motel guests having sex. And it gets even creepier than that. (Peeping Tom Motel) *** A family loses two children by apparent poisoning… and then the mother's death two months later under the same mysterious circumstances. Obviously there was a murderer living amongst the family, or somewhere in the town. Wasn't there? (The Mystery of the Garrett Family's Tragic Deaths)==========HOUR TWO: Is it possible that in 1927 we picked up signals from an artificial satellite sent to our planet by an extraterrestrial intelligence? Some believe the evidence is overwhelming. (Mystery of the Alien Satellite) *** When a great famine struck Europe in 1314, mothers abandoned their children and in some cases, even ate them. Could this be the gruesome beginnings of the story we know as Hansel and Gretel? (The Grimm Reality Behind Hansel and Gretel) *** But first… I doubt there's a single person over the age of twelve living in the modernized world that hasn't at least heard of Bigfoot. A large portion of them have probably heard it's other name – Sasquatch – as well. But far fewer are familiar with his even more reclusive Siberian cousin: the Russian Bigfoot that's we've come to know as the Yeti, or more fondly… the Abominable Snowman. We'll begin with that story! (Why They Call This Snowman Abominable)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: In 1938, stories of a "killer ghost" began to be told in eastern Kentucky. Even though no one ever saw this malevolent apparition, it was said to have caused five very similar and unexplained deaths. We have vampires AND zombies this week in an undead double bill (Kay was thrilled) as well as people hurling themselves to a watery doom. More specifically, we tackle the second season of Interview With The Vampire on BBC2, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon on Sky Max, and Totally Completely Fine on ITVX. But that's not all, because we pull out some Paramount+ recommendations for those looking to drop into that streaming service (assuming you've forgiven them for cancelling Halo!), reel off some comfort watches for maternity leave and crunch some stats over recent streaming figures. All that while Boyd beams in from his holiday in NYC. Now that's dedication.

Vampires have always been a fascination of mine, but more so with their thoughts and feeling rather than the transformation or the blood lust. Only Lovers Left Alive invokes the feeling of Interview With The Vampire, with much less about the sparkling and questionable love triangle (like Twilight), and more about the quintessential emphasis on how they simply live. The characters, Adam and Eve, show us through intellectual thoughts and feelings how less is more, how loss can still hold true for someone who has experienced all of their lives and how morality can sometimes have to be placed on pause for the sake of survival. Send us a Text Message.Happy Wine Wednesday! Terence is back with me to wrap up our coverage of the SPECTACULAR second season of AMC's Interview with the Vampire.  This was truly a bittersweet occasion because I have had such a blast talking to Terence about this amazing show and I'm sad to say farewell (for now) to the show and to my weekly chats with Terence about it.We had a lot of fun talking about these messy vampires in this finale episode.  We start the episode by delighting in Louis getting his lick back and serving up some fiery revenge to those coven bastards for what they did to Claudia and Madeline.  And of course we talk about the brilliance of Jacob Anderson as he captures Louis's madness. That final showdown with Santiago was EVERYTHING. Ben Daniels will truly be missed, but what a sendoff that was for his character who got the whackings he deserved from Louis.Next we talk about the SHOCKING revelations about the trial, which came as no surprise because Armand has repeatedly been revealed to be a lying liar who lies. We can't say enough good things about this cast, including the delight that Eric Bogosian brings to Daniel Molloy as he calmly and methodically ramps up to reveal to Louis that it was Lestat who saved him.We can't wait to see that home wrecking Daniel Molloy adjust to life as a vampire in Season 3.  Speaking of Season 3, we are SO ready for rock star Lestat and to see where things stand with Louis.  The Loustat reunion scene was so beautifully acted, so y'all know we had lots to say about it. Thanks so much for listening to our coverage! The season has ended, but if you're like me you're probably in a full blown rewatch.  My discussion with Terence about episode 7 - "I Could Not Prevent It" is the perfect rewatch companion.  And if you're just getting around to the second season, welcome!Terence and I do a deep dive into the trial of Claudia, Louis, and Madeline.  We question whether Lestat was there voluntarily and speculate about the meaning behind Lestat's apparent shakiness at times during the trial. And of course we get into the shocking revelations in the episode that go back to Season 1, like the intense fight between Louis and Lestat and the night that Lestat gave Claudia the gift.We also continue to question what - if anything - we can believe about Armand in these memories.  We simply don't trust him! We close out our conversation giving a heartfelt farewell to Claudia and talking about the many ways in which she was failed as a human and then again as a vampire.  Salute to Delainey Haynes for a superb performance this season. Happy Pride Month, Spookies!!!! It's officially time for us to be our best, most canonically queer selves, and we're kicking off this year's line-up with a supernatural classic: Interview with the Vampire (1994). If you're not watching the TV show, you totally should be, but first we have to pay our dues to the OG Lestat de Lioncourt. Tom Cruise is absolutely That Bitch in this role, and he and Brad Pitt and Christian Slater competed in a literal handsome-off for their parts in this movie (a competition that should've also included Antonio Banderas, BTW). While this flick explicitly features two gay dads raising their iconic vampire daughter, it still very much could be gayer — but don't worry, baby, because we're just getting started. Terence is back with me this week to discuss Interview with the Vampire Season 2, Episode 3 - "No Pain" - an episode that in fact did feature a lot of pain.  Poor Claudia!  Terence and I talk about the introduction of Raglan James. We're so excited about Justin Kirk's addition to this talented cast, but we absolutely do not trust RJ whatsoever.  We also unpack the different iterations of Lestat featured in this episode via Louis and Armand.  Y'all know we don't trust Armand and his recollection of Lestat in his flashbacks made us even more suspicious of him.Of course we talk about Claudia and the Coven.  We've been on edge about Claudia's safety and well being in this new group but perhaps it is Claudia's age at the time she became a vampire that we should be worried about.  We also talk about Claudia and Louis just outright hustling backwards during this episode.  Coming up with lies for their "Bruce the Vampire Maker" backstory with doors and windows open is a terrible idea.  And Louis needs to tell Claudia that Armand knows about Lestat ASAP!Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time!  Be sure to follow and support Terence here: his website, his Twitter account, and his IG. Weird Darkness: Stories of the Paranormal, Supernatural, Legends, Lore, Mysterious, Macabre, Unsolved

HOUR ONE: Is it possible that in 1927 we picked up signals from an artificial satellite sent to our planet by an extraterrestrial intelligence? (Why They Call This Snowman Abominable)==========HOUR TWO: Ever heard of Shadrack Ireland? (The Mystery of the Garrett Family's Tragic Deaths)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: In 1938, stories of a "killer ghost" began to be told in eastern Kentucky. Even though no one ever saw this malevolent apparition, it was said to have caused five very similar and unexplained deaths.
