One of Matts favorite cryptids!!! Mokele Mbembe is a dinosaur around the Congo. Here is what Wiki said about it..... In several Bantu mythologies, mokele-mbembe (also written as "mokèlé-mbèmbé") is a mythical water-dwelling entity that is believed to exist in the Congo River Basin. Variously described as a living creature or a spirit, mokele-mbembe's descriptions vary widely based on conflicting purported eyewitness reports, but it is often described as a large quadrupedal herbivore with smooth skin, a long neck, and a single tooth or horn, much like the extinct species sauropods. In the early to mid 20th century, the entity would become a point of focus among adherents of cryptozoology and young Earth creationism, resulting in numerous expeditions led by cryptozoologists and/or funded by young Earth creationists and other groups with the objective to find evidence that invalidates or contradicts the scientific consensus regarding evolution. Paleontologist Donald Prothero remarks that "the quest for Mokele-Mbembe ... is part of the effort by creationists to overthrow the theory of evolution and teaching of science by any means possible". Additionally, Prothero noted that "the only people looking for mokele-mbembe are creationist ministers, not wildlife biologists." Most mainstream experts believe that mokele-mbembe, as reported by Congolese natives, was probably inspired by the black rhinoceros, which once thrived in the region. Historian Edward Guimont has argued that the mokele-mbembe myth grows out of earlier pseudohistorical claims about Great Zimbabwe, and in turn influenced the later reptilian conspiracy theory.

History of South Africa podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2024 19:43

This is episode 158 and we're taking an epic regional tour into the along the Limpopo River to meet with the Venda and other groups of folks who hail from the province we now call Limpopo. Thanks to listener Mushe for the suggestion. By the mid-fifteenth century Shona-speaking immigrants from Zimbabwe settled across the Limpopo River and interacted with the local Sotho inhabitants. As a result of this interaction, Shona and Sotho led to what is now regarded as a common Venda identity by the mid-sixteenth century. Venda-speaking people live mainly in the Soutpansberg area and southern Zimbabwe, but they also once lived in south-western Mozambique and north-eastern Botswana. Venda grammar and phonology is similar to Shona, particularly western Shona and Venda vocabulary has its greatest equivalent in Sotho. Phonology is the branch of linguistics that deals with systems of sounds within a language or between different languages. According to most ethnographers it is not only the Venda language, but also certain customs, such as the domba pre-marital school, that distinguish them from surrounding Shona, Sotho-Tswana and Tsonga communities. First a quick refresh. We heard in one of earlier podcasts about the Mapungubwe kingdom which lasted until the 13th Century - following which Shona speaking people's moved southwards into the Soutpansberg region over the centuries. Archaeologists have established that by the fourteenth century, or the late Mapungubwe period and what is known as and the Moloko, the early post Mapungubwe kingdoms emerged in northern Transvaal. This is where the forebears of the Venda come in. Zimbabwean ceramics help a lot here, they were produced by Shona speakers and their fourteenth century distribution demarcated the Shona trading empire centred around Great Zimbabwe. The rulers at Great Zimbabwe controlled most of the country between the Limpopo and Zambezi rivers until smaller trading states broke away in the fifteenth century. I've covered this in great detail in Episodes 5, 6 and 7 if you want to refresh memories. We also know that trade between these early kingdoms and the east coast was established, goods like gold, ivory, and copper were traded with Arabic and Portuguese merchants. The Venda were directly impacted by this trade, along with another unique group called the Lemba who are directly related to ancestors who actually traded all the way from Yemen in the Middle East. More about them in a few minutes. Ceramics help us piece together the past more effectively, the period of Shona and Sotho interaction eventually involved into more than a mere overlap of these ceramic styles, because for the first time different stylistic elements appeared on the same vessels. These Letaba pots have also been unearthed in the eastern Transvaal or Limpopo Province as its now known. It is interesting that these ceramics are still produced today, these Letaba pots and ceramics are made by the Venda, the Tsonga, the Ndebele, but anthropologists and historians believe the style itself is distinctly Venda in character. The Venda kingdom pretty much stretched from the Limpopo River in the north to the Olifants and Ngwenya River, or Crocodile River, in the south, but by the time Louis Trichardt rode through their land in 1836, the great Venda empire had almost vanished, torn up by external threats — damaged by the amaNdebele and even amaZulu raiders. The second group who could be found in this territory are the Lemba. They remain one of the self-defining groups of the region who have a stunning origin story. I am going to tread quite carefully here because there's science and then there's oral tradition. As you'll hear, the Lemba believe they are related to the lost Tribes of Israel, and have recently demanded that they be recognized as such. Their narrative and origin story links them to the Middle East and the Judaism and there is DNA evidence to back them up.

Imagine a vast, colorful tapestry, delicately woven with the intricate threads of human history. Each strand represents the stories of civilizations, the rise and fall of empires, and the lives of individuals. But as your eyes scan the rich fabric of humanity's past, you realize there is a gaping void, an absence of stories that are vital to our collective understanding. This absence, this profound missing part of our human history, is African history. African history is a treasure trove of knowledge, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and an ode to the profound diversity of cultures, languages, and traditions. Yet, for far too long, this vital piece of the puzzle has been shrouded in mystery, obscured by the mists of ignorance and the shadows of prejudice. The neglect of African history is not only an injustice to the continent itself but also a disservice to the entire world. For it is within the cradle of Africa that the story of humanity began. The continent's vast landscapes, ranging from the sweeping savannas to the dense rainforests, have nurtured the origins of our species. It was here that Homo sapiens first set foot on Earth, marking the beginning of an incredible journey that would span millennia and continents. The legacy of African history is written in the sands of Egypt, where the ancient pyramids stand tall as silent witnesses to the ingenuity and ambition of a great civilization. It is engraved in the stones of Great Zimbabwe, a testament to a powerful kingdom that once thrived in the heart of Southern Africa. It echoes in the oral traditions of the Griots, the esteemed storytellers of West Africa, who have preserved the continent's history through generations of song and verse. The story does not end with the marvels of ancient civilizations. Africa's history is a living, breathing entity that continues to evolve and shape our world today. The continent has been the wellspring of countless innovations and ideas that have revolutionized our understanding of art, science, and philosophy. From the mathematical genius of the ancient Egyptians to the striking artistry of the Nok culture in Nigeria, Africa's contributions to human knowledge are as diverse as they are groundbreaking. The tapestry of human history cannot be complete without the vibrant and complex threads of African history. To ignore this crucial component is to disregard our shared human experience and to limit our understanding of the past, present, and future. We must seek to unravel the enigma of Africa's past, to explore its untold stories and hidden truths, for it is only then that we can truly appreciate the richness of our global heritage. Join me and Queen Diambi where we discuss the importance of this profound wisdom and the responsibility we hold by educating ourselves and the next generation about the importance of where we all come from.  Queen Diambi Kabatusuila was crowned as the ruler of the Bena Tshiyamba People of Bakwa Indu of Central Kasaï Region part of the ancient Luba Empire in the Democratic Republic of Congo on August 31st, 2016. She has been enthroned by all the Bakwa Luntu Chiefs on July 15 2017 and now holds the Title of Diambi Mukalenga Mukaji Wa Nkashama Wa Bakwa Luntu (Queen of the Order of the Leopard of the Bakwa Luntu People).  You won't want to miss this episode. Is bigotry behind the bizarre theories about Africa's ancient architecture?

Creative Habits Podcast

Some of the most impressive buildings and cities ever made by humans can be found in Africa: the ruined city of Great Zimbabwe, Mapungubwe in South Africa, Kenya's Gedi Ruins, and Meroe in Sudan. Perhaps the most awe-inspiring of these is the last remaining of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Great Pyramid of Giza, in Egypt. It should come as no surprise. As far back as 3.3 million years ago, the first stone tool was made in what is now Kenya, a region in Africa with a rich archaeological heritage. Its cultural diversity and complexity are well known; it contains some of the world's oldest art pieces. It is also the birthplace of modern humans' ancient ancestors, Homo sapiens. In spite of all this evidence, some claim that no one from Africa (or anywhere in the developing world today) could have created and constructed the Giza pyramids. However, they think ancient astronauts, extraterrestrials, or time travelers were the real builders. What's the big deal?, you may ask. Who cares if relatively few people don't believe the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids? What's the harm? First, these people travel the world to prove their theories and desecrate ancient artifacts. Additionally, they perpetuate the racist notion that only white people - Europeans - are capable of such feats. In 2014, two German pseudo-scientists set out to "prove" that academics hid the "real" origin of the Giza pyramids. To do so, they cut off a chunk of one of the pyramids without authorization, in order to conduct an analysis. In early 2017, scientists from the South American World Congress on Mummy Studies posted a message to their Facebook page to draw attention to the raiding of Nazca graves for the Alien project, a supposed pseudo-scientific research program. The book insists aliens, not ancient Peruvians, are behind the Nazca Lines, despite all the evidence to the contrary. These incidents illustrate threats to developing nations' cultural heritage. Conservation authorities worldwide must spend a great deal of money protecting and restoring unique heritage pieces and guard them against vandalism. For instance, the most recent overhaul planned for the Giza site – back in 2008 – was estimated at a cost of USD$45 million. These are not wealthy nations, as a rule, and it costs money they often don't have to repair the damage done by, among others, pseudo-scientists.
