On this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast we have an incredible in-depth conversation with the legendary Mike May, a former New Jersey surfing champion and surf historian. The episode explores May's efforts in uncovering lesser-known historical narratives about early surfing in the U.S. East Coast, discussing figures such as Sam Reid, who was a protégé of Duke Kahanamoku. The discussion highlights the cultural ties between Hawaii and Atlantic City, Sam Reid's complicated friendship with Tom Blake and their being the first to surf Malibu. We also touch on the underinvestment issues facing Atlantic City, and celebrate the resilience of local surfing icon, Dean Randazzo and his current fight with Cancer. May has also contributed to surf literature recently with his new Children's Book, ‘Duke and Sammy and is definitely worth checking out. May addresses the importance of preserving surfing history and fostering cultural connections while continuing to share fascinating surfing stories. This is one for the Surf Nerds out there. Often overlooked for the warmer waters of its Hawaiian and Californian counterparts, the Atlantic coast of New Jersey has been home to surfing for 135 years, and in turn has held unsung influence over the history of the sport in America.” That is the Opening Quote for the newly released book “I Heard There Were No Waves in New Jersey: Surfing on the Jersey Shore 1888-1984” by Rizzoli Publishing and edited by Danny DiMauro and Johan Kugelberg. Our Guests for this episode of Hardcore Surf History are the contributors to this beautiful book and tribute to New Jersey Surfing. Book Editor a Danny DiMauro, New Jersey Legend, Mark Neustadter and Former Atlantic City Heavy, Mike May. May is a founding Member of the NJ surfing Hall of Fame and write the definitive story on Duke Kahanamoku protege, Sam Reid. All of them have contributed to this beautiful book. Drawing on archives of photographs and ephemera from private collections, and from those held in the New Jersey Surf Museum and New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame, this book is a celebration of East Coast surfing, from its pioneering beginnings at the end of the nineteenth century to its heyday in the 1980s as the scene converged with skateboarding and a shared influence on street style. It featured insightful texts that illuminate previously unheralded moments in the evolution of the sport, the book not only introduces some of the greatest unseen surf photography of the last century but also lets the Jersey Shore take its rightful place in the history of American surfing. Send us a Text Message.Happy Wine Wednesday! Terence is back with me to wrap up our coverage of the SPECTACULAR second season of AMC's Interview with the Vampire. This was truly a bittersweet occasion because I have had such a blast talking to Terence about this amazing show and I'm sad to say farewell (for now) to the show and to my weekly chats with Terence about it.We had a lot of fun talking about these messy vampires in this finale episode. We start the episode by delighting in Louis getting his lick back and serving up some fiery revenge to those coven bastards for what they did to Claudia and Madeline. And of course we talk about the brilliance of Jacob Anderson as he captures Louis's madness. That final showdown with Santiago was EVERYTHING. Ben Daniels will truly be missed, but what a sendoff that was for his character who got the whackings he deserved from Louis.Next we talk about the SHOCKING revelations about the trial, which came as no surprise because Armand has repeatedly been revealed to be a lying liar who lies. We can't say enough good things about this cast, including the delight that Eric Bogosian brings to Daniel Molloy as he calmly and methodically ramps up to reveal to Louis that it was Lestat who saved him.We can't wait to see that home wrecking Daniel Molloy adjust to life as a vampire in Season 3. Speaking of Season 3, we are SO ready for rock star Lestat and to see where things stand with Louis. The Loustat reunion scene was so beautifully acted, so y'all know we had lots to say about it. Thanks so much for listening to our coverage! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time!Be sure to follow and support Terence here: his website, his Twitter account, and his IG. Send us a Text Message.Hey there fellow Interview with the Vampire fans! The season has ended, but if you're like me you're probably in a full blown rewatch. My discussion with Terence about episode 7 - "I Could Not Prevent It" is the perfect rewatch companion. And if you're just getting around to the second season, welcome!Terence and I do a deep dive into the trial of Claudia, Louis, and Madeline. We question whether Lestat was there voluntarily and speculate about the meaning behind Lestat's apparent shakiness at times during the trial. And of course we get into the shocking revelations in the episode that go back to Season 1, like the intense fight between Louis and Lestat and the night that Lestat gave Claudia the gift.We also continue to question what - if anything - we can believe about Armand in these memories. We simply don't trust him! We close out our conversation giving a heartfelt farewell to Claudia and talking about the many ways in which she was failed as a human and then again as a vampire. Salute to Delainey Haynes for a superb performance this season. Keep an eye on your feeds - my conversation with Terence about the AMAZING Season 2 finale will be out this Wine Wednesday!Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time!Don't miss recent episodes on House of the Dragon Season 2 and Bridgerton Season 3. Joanna Robinson and Van Lathan travel to Europe to recap the first six episodes of ‘Interview With the Vampire' Season 2. They start by discussing whether or not it's the best show on television right now, how it effectively depicts the cultural complexities of its settings, and why Jacob Anderson's nuanced performance as Louis de Pointe du Lac anchors the show (1:43). Along the way, they talk about how the AMC drama embraces the queer nature of the story and how Sam Reid's take on Lestat de Lioncourt is in stark contrast to Tom Cruise's in the 1994 film adaptation (13:04). Later, they consider the future of the series and what they want out of it moving forward (40:30). One of the best shows on TV finally makes its return. This week, we review the first four episodes of Interview with the Vampire's second season. The second season finds Louis and Claudia on the run after supposedly killing Lestat, and the pair travel the world in search of more of their own kind. Terence is back with me this week to discuss Interview with the Vampire Season 2, Episode 3 - "No Pain" - an episode that in fact did feature a lot of pain. Poor Claudia! Terence and I talk about the introduction of Raglan James. We're so excited about Justin Kirk's addition to this talented cast, but we absolutely do not trust RJ whatsoever. We also unpack the different iterations of Lestat featured in this episode via Louis and Armand. Y'all know we don't trust Armand and his recollection of Lestat in his flashbacks made us even more suspicious of him.Of course we talk about Claudia and the Coven. We've been on edge about Claudia's safety and well being in this new group but perhaps it is Claudia's age at the time she became a vampire that we should be worried about. We also talk about Claudia and Louis just outright hustling backwards during this episode. Coming up with lies for their "Bruce the Vampire Maker" backstory with doors and windows open is a terrible idea. And Louis needs to tell Claudia that Armand knows about Lestat ASAP!Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time! Q&A on the AMC series Interview with the Vampire with actors Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. Based on Anne Rice's iconic novel, follow Louis de Pointe's epic story of love, blood and the perils of immortality, as told to the journalist Daniel Molloy.
After plenty of requests for coverage, we're finally caught up on AMC's Interview with the Vampire S01. Spoiler alert: we both strongly recommend this. Qualms about Sam Reid's accent aside, this show has everything: hot sex, unabashed queerness, race and class critiques, and Bailey Bass is as Claudia. Drawing upon archives of photographs and ephemera from private collections, and from those held in the New Jersey Surf Museum and New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame, this book is a celebration of East Coast surfing, from its pioneering beginnings at the end of the nineteenth century to its heyday in the 1980s as the scene converged with skateboarding and a shared influence on street style. It featured insightful texts that illuminate previously unheralded moments in the evolution of the sport, the book not only introduces some of the greatest unseen surf photography of the last century but also lets the Jersey Shore take its rightful place in the history of American surfing. We hope you enjoy this episode... This week's episode features Sam Reid, host of a YouTube channel, The Studio Revue. I met Sam a few years ago because we both live in the same area. When we met, he had about 10,000 or so YouTube channel subscribers. At the time of recording this intro, he has over 125,000 subscribers. Of course, I had to chat with him about how he was able to grow his channel to over 100k subs in just a few years. As always, links and resources can be found in the show notes. Check 'em out at https://daveyandkrista.com/how-to-grow-youtube-channel-over-100k-subscribers-btb214/. And if you enjoyed this episode, please consider leaving a review over at Apple Podcasts.

Did Paramount+'s Tulsa King SLY-ly (sorry) work its way into our hearts? The Filmcast's Devindra Hardawar is back to talk about the Sylvester Stallone vehicle, good pacing, bad wigs, and making room for weirdly charming B-minus viewing in your viewing diet. Later, we had Tyson drive us Around The Dial, with stops for The Big Brunch, the ends of The Crown and Atlanta AND The Good Fight, and true-crime royal-watching. Mike hoped we would NOT eliminate The Middleman with his Canon presentation of the show's eighth episode. Judy Blume won, Candace Cameron Buré lost, and we all went on a Mapquest with a road-trip Game Time. Might want to pull over at a dispensary before you listen to an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS
