One thing a lot of young ministry leaders feel unprepared for is the supervision and evaluation of other staff members. Many of us are serving in our first senior leadership role and need help knowing how to evaluate and grow the team around us. Philip Nation is the pastor at FBC Bradenton and he has a lot of insight into helping develop a healthy system of evaluation, which begins at the hiring stage. You can connect with Philip on Twitter @PhilipNationScott's book Dream Teams has a lot on developing a team climate, and is available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Dream-Teams-Winning-Church-Ministry/dp/0692368884.

Many younger ministry leaders will find themselves serving in established churches. Sam Rainer, the pastor at West Bradenton Baptist Church, is one of the leading voices about the established church, which he defines as "churches who've been around a long time, have a presence in the community, and have standing programs or ministries." We talk about two of the obstacles from his book Obstacles in the Established Church, and how younger ministry leaders can serve faithfully. You can follow Sam on Twitter at @SamRainer where you can learn more about the Revitalize Network. You can also grab a copy of his book from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Obstacles-Established-Church-Leaders-Overcome/dp/0692289852

It's nice to be back! This week's episode is with Stephen Keene, pastor of Southside Baptist in Shelbyville TN. We're talking about how churches and ministry leaders can navigate the social media world. One of the biggest takeaways from Stephen: sometimes pastors need to live like it's 1992, and not live through social media. We also talk about how churches can use social media as an effective outreach and connection to their communities.

One thing that a lot of ministry leaders, especially younger ones, take for granted is their physical health. We're young, we're still active, we play pickup ball or run 5Ks, and we still have our original knees and shoulders. We're not facing pacemakers and dentures, so we often overlook and ignore taking care of ourselves physically. But as pastors, we have a responsibility for our physical health because when we're not in good health, we're not able to be as effective as God would have us be in our churches. If we're constantly sick or dealing with major issues, we can't spend time investing in people or preparing to preach.

This week's episode is a reflection on something that a lot of young ministry leaders struggle with: watching others have success. It might be a VBS that saw an entire elementary school get saved, or a community outreach event that doubled attendance, or a church that gives its pastor a car for his anniversary. The biggest takeaways I wanted to share in this episode are: Cultivate a heart of gratefulness, and to be Faithful to your calling. There's an article on my blog about this as well, you can find it here: http://www.scottmdouglas.com/blog/pastors-dont-resent-others-success

A lot of us in ministry want to get more training and education. With online and distance education options available, receiving a high-quality theological education is more accessible than ever before. But a lot of factors must be considered. That's why this week's conversation with Dr. John David Trentham from Southern Seminary is so crucial. We talk about the differences in programs with Masters and Doctoral education, and really key in on the idea of fit and calling as the primary determiners, with family and life situations to consider as well.If you want to connect with Dr. Trentham or learn more about Southern Seminary's degree programs, especially the 36 month Ed.D. program, you can email Dr. Trentham at jtrentham@sbts.edu or go to http://www.sbts.edu/doctoral/doctor-of-education/.

Without question one of the most difficult topics to discuss in Evangelicalism today is the issue of race. We're confronted regularly with discussions of the Kaepernick protest, the rise of Alt-Right Groups, and an uneasy history even within our own background. This week's episode is with Dominique Price, an attorney and licensed NFL agent with Priority Sports, as well as a former 4-year starter for Northwestern University and undrafted free agent with the Cowboys. You can learn more about Dominique at http://www.prioritysports.biz/staff/dominique-price.

Easter is an inescapable date on the calendar. Rather than see it as a burden of busy, let's embrace the season as a chance to impact our communities and churches for Christ. And I also share my disdain for Peeps.

In ministry we operate with a "Piggy Bank" which is the currency of trust we lead with. Just like our kids' piggy banks, we make deposits very slowly, pennies at a time. And we make the deposits when we invest in others, spend time with them, and build trust. Whenever we need people to trust us, we have to spend from the piggy bank.
