Adversity is a gift to remind us that we are insufficient for this work. Adversity is a gift to manifest the life of Jesus through His servants. Adversity is a gift to bring life to your congregation. Adversity is a gift to prepare us for eternity. Determine whether you believe the Word builds the church. Listen to those who don't like your preaching and why. Remember the Word never returns void. Embrace a supportive, but unimpressed, evaluation of your preaching. Know there is nothing like a congregation who grows hungry for the Word. In this episode, Mark Clifton and Dan Hurst are joined by Mark Hallock to discuss some principles from pastor Frank Lewis concerning dealing with the storms of life. You will encounter storms even when you are obediently traveling with Jesus. No matter how skilled a sailor, you might encounter some storms are more powerful than you. The time to prepare for a storm is before the wind starts to blow. The wind and the waves know his voice even when he is asleep in the stern. Have a song or hymn. Have a scripture. Have a friend. Have you ever had someone in your church or circle of friends become sick, maybe even have to stay in the hospital? And maybe you wanted to visit them, or you felt God nudging you to visit them, but… you just weren't sure? Maybe you didn't know what to say. Or maybe you felt uncomfortable in a hospital setting. Or maybe you even thought the person was going to die and you didn't know how to approach them. I totally get this. I often feel like I'm interrupting others and I usually don't have a lot to say. So what possible good could I do to visit someone who might be sick or in the hospital? Yet God has convicted me of this and called me out of my comfort zone to go and do it anyway. I have walked into hospital rooms of near strangers to talk with them and pray with them. I have visited the home of someone who was ill, offering her an audio Bible since she was unable to see clearly. I have driven others to their cancer treatments. And I do so out of love and care. Because they matter. But it isn't always easy. And so I have a resource for you that can help. This month, for my book recommendation, I'd like to offer the book Visit the Sick, by Brian Croft. Here are three reasons why I like it—and I think you will, too. A Pastor's retreat ------------------ Acts 16:11-15 (ESV Strong's) The Conversion of Lydia 11 So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, 12 and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. 13 And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. 14 One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. 15 And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. ------------------ 5 Core Values of SWAT 1. Let's face it...ministry is hard. And at times it's hard in ways we never thought it would be, and for which we were never really prepared. So many of the day-in and day-out realities - the practical nuts-and-bolts of ministry - can leave us tired, frustrated or wondering if we're even fulfilling God's call. And sometimes it can make us feel very alone. Brian Croft joins us on Hope Renewed to talk about finding hope in the midst of the every-day-ness of ministry and where we can find strength for the practical aspects of our call to shepherd God's flock. Much is said about the work pastors can do to make their churches healthier. But, churches have far more lay members than pastors. Healthy churches are made up of ordinary, healthy church members. You don't need to be a pastor to make your church healthier. Your church needs everyone to do their part to be healthier. Brian Croft of Practical Shepherding joins me today to show you some steps to make your church healthier today. Subscribe to The Ordinary Christian Podcast.
