Retreats are an ancient practice for Catholics to get away from the day-to-day life and allow God to work in their hearts in a deeply intimate way. Brian Rhude, Project Coordinator at the Catholic Apostolate Center and Campus Minister for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, joins this episode of On Mission with Chris Pierno, Sarah Scalfaro, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C.Whether one goes on a day retreat or a weeklong silent retreat, retreats are a means to grow closer to Christ and to reinvigorate one's spiritual and prayer life. Engaged couples go on retreats to prepare for marriage. And other lay men and women take annual weekend retreats to enter deeper prayer. Many priests and religious, too, go on retreat to recharge their relationship with God in a profound way. Some religious orders' charism provides retreat experiences for people. Brian Rhude explains the many different kinds of retreats and how one can take their experiences home with them and allow the Lord to continually speak to them. The simplest retreat one can do every day is spending time with Jesus in daily prayer. Related On Mission episodes:Year of PrayerThe Eucharist and the Eucharistic RevivalShrines and PilgrimagesMarriage Preparation From the Ad Infinitum blog:Making the Most of Summer with Your ChurchRetreats Read Art of Accompaniment and Living as Missionary Disciples ResourcesCheck out the main Saints and Feast Days websiteDownload the App on the App Store or Google Play Follow us:The Catholic Apostolate CenterThe Center's podcast websiteInstagramFacebookApple PodcastsSpotify On Mission is produced by the Catholic Apostolate Center. Preaching for the Feast of the Presentation, Anna Robertson offers a reflection on how the Prophet Anna's role in the readings informs our faith lives today: "[Anna] went forth preaching, carrying the Good News of the Light of the World beyond the walls of the temple to those who yearned for salvation. When we leave Mass on Candlemas, it is not enough to return to our homes with our candles, cozy in our assurance of our private salvation. Rather, Anna reminds us that we must bring the Good News out into the world, particularly to those who are suffering and longing for consolation." Anna Robertson is Director of Distributed Organizer at Discerning Deacons. In the past, she has served as Director of Youth and Young Adult Mobilization at Catholic Climate Covenant and Campus Minister for Retreats at Seattle University. We cannot always anticipate the impact that each new relationship will have on our lives and vice versa. God is calling us to be open to the love that is waiting for us and to share that love with others. Our small acts of love may make an impact that we only hear about from heaven." Meghan Larsen-Reidy lives in Pittsburgh with her husband and four children. She currently works as a Campus Minister at three colleges in the Pittsburgh area. Meghan received a Masters of Arts in Teaching at the University of Portland and simultaneously did a service-teaching program. She currently attends the Franciscan School of Theology at the University of San Diego where she is getting her Masters of Theological Studies in Franciscan Theology. A Scary Church: The Danger Of A Life-Changing Faith

FBC Independence Podcast

For the last few weeks, I've spoken about ‘Scary Church;' these churches failed their members by not teaching them proper biblical teachings and practices and not leading them in the past of discipleship. These were ‘scary churches' because the Christians were either uninterested or incapable of sharing their faith and representing their faith in the presence of others!                  Today, though, I will talk to you about a different type of ‘scary' church – a church that takes its responsibilities of training Christians seriously and leading them on a path of discipleship, and service. Let me begin with a true story, as told by a popular campus minister several years ago:               In the past, William Willimon, the Campus Minister at Duke Ministry, told of an intense phone call with a student's father. The father had complained that his daughter, a bright student with a bright future in the business world, had decided to change her life's plan and become a missionary to Haiti, an impoverished nation between Cuba and the Dominican Republic. He screamed in anger, “I hold you responsible for this!”  What follows is a brief recounting of the conversation:                 Willimon asked him, “Why me?” The father stated clearly, “Because you ingratiated yourself and filled her mind with all this religious stuff.” The minister asked the father, “Sir, weren't you the one who had her baptized?” He replied, “Well, well, well, yes.” “And didn't you take her to Sunday School when she was a little girl?” “Well, well, yes.” “And didn't you allow your daughter to go on those youth group ski trips to Colorado in high school?” “Yes. . . what does that have to do with anything?” “Sir, you're the reason she's throwing it all away. You introduced her to Jesus. Not Me!” The exasperated father exclaimed at this, “But all we wanted was a Presbyterian.”    The minister closed the conversation by saying, “Well, sorry, sir, you messed up. You've gone and made a disciple!”   That is the result of a ‘scary' church! An individual who takes their faith seriously seeks God's call on their life and then, if necessary, sacrifices their former plans to follow God's leading – no matter what!  That is the result of a scary church, and that is the result of a scary faith – a faith that disrupts one's life plans and leads them to a life of sacrifice, and service. . . and blessing! Jesus said this in one of his sermons, in Matthew 10:37 ff: “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me, and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.    And he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.  He who has found his life shall lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake shall find it.”       Jesus fully intended for us to be a part of a scary church that taught us to follow Him and to become a scary Christian who would stop at nothing to follow Him. History has shown that scary Christians are an often unstoppable force behind some of God's greatest movements in history! Let us all be diligent in the practice of our faith and choose to be obedient to God's call every day.     You can best support our Ministry by sharing these videos with your friends and family.   We also need your financial contributions to make our ministries possible. You can contribute online at https://firstbaptistofindependence.aware3.net/give/   Thank you for listening. We will see you next week!

Joe Alto reveals how various religious beliefs manifest in the world of mental health care. 00:07:57 — Dr. Vervaeke introduces philosophical counseling. He frames it as a solution to existential confusion rather than treating pathology, lending a fresh perspective to the mental health discourse. 00:11:00 — Joe Alto maps out his plans for catering to high-insight individuals. 00:15:00 — Joe Alto dives deep into the relationship between virtue and beauty, painting a vivid tapestry that includes insights from a college-read book, "Alone With Others" by Steven Batchelor. 00:17:00 — Dr. Vervaeke poses an intriguing question: How do beauty and virtue play out in psychotherapeutic practice? Especially pertinent for those grappling with existential confusion or a crisis of meaning. 00:19:20 — With a personal touch, Joe Alto discusses the complex interplay of guilt in the lives of highly insightful individuals. It's a delicate dance between self-awareness and the burden of consciousness. 00:23:20 — John Vervaeke unveils the universal triad of truth, good, and beauty. These "transcendentals," as he calls them, open up avenues for a deeper understanding across domains. 00:27:40 — Dr. Vervaeke advises on the intricate balance between truth, goodness, and beauty. Each, he suggests, has its unique form of "ultimacy." 00:38:33 — Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) comes under scrutiny. Dr. Vervaeke critiques its current use, specifically, its detachment from the original Stoic context. 00:41:20 — An amalgamation of cognitive and existentialist techniques in therapy is put on the table. Vervaeke brings in Stoicism and Buddhism, proposing a rich blend of therapeutic methods. 00:46:20 — Academic rigor meets practice as Joe Alto discusses Nancy Snow's empirical work on virtue cultivation. The focus sharpens on the value of scientific backing in psychological research. 00:51:28 — The theme of authentic living emerges. Dr. Vervaeke elucidates his aspiration to be truly Socratic, refusing to compromise this ethos for fame or influence. 00:54:02 — Mindfulness and dialogical practices are spotlighted as pivotal elements in Dr. Vervaeke's work. An "ecology" to nurture these practices is passionately advocated for. 01:00:25 — Fatherhood becomes a poignant lens through which Joe Alto examines reality. Personal life and intellectual pursuits collide, resulting in an enriched understanding of existence. 01:03:31 — Dr. Vervaeke delicately balances aspiration and humility, sharing his hope to influence a sizable audience without crossing into the realm of idolization. 01:07:58 — The digital and the physical intersect as virtue, virtuosity, and the virtual world are dissected. Dr. Vervaeke emphasizes the urgency of translating online actions into real-world impact. 01:10:20 — Beauty gets another layer of complexity as Joe poses a philosophical question about physical attractiveness. Is beauty in the eye of the beholder, or is it an intrinsic quality? 01:13:05 — The episode culminates in a profound note on the essence of inner beauty. Both speakers agree that true beauty is far more than skin deep, anchoring the conversation in an emotional and spiritual richness.

“To be a disciple of Jesus is to love what Jesus loves, and Jesus loves creation.” Why is a large portion of one of the most spiritually rich generation of emerging adults leaving their faith? Falon Barton suggests that it is because their churches (and religion in general) are not addressing their strong value in justice. As one very connected to the season of emerging adults herself, one of Falon's big questions has been about environmental justice. In this episode we talk with Falon about creation care, discipleship, and engaging today's emerging adults in our church communities by valuing what they are concerned and listening to what they have to say.   Falon is the Campus Minister at the University Church of Christ Malibu at Pepperdine University, where she offers pastoral care to college students, and preaches and teaches regularly for the congregation. Falon has a Doctor of Ministry from Lipscomb University, as well as a Master's degree in Theology and Bachelor's degrees in Journalism and Hispanic Studies from Pepperdine University. One of her primary interests in her academic research and her work with emerging adults is environmental justice, especially Christians' responsibility to participate in God's mission to all creation. She and her spouse, Nate, recently welcomed their first child, Soren. You can connect with Falon via email: falon.barton@pepperdine.edu. Preaching for the Fifth Sunday of Lent, JoAnn Melina Lopez offers a reflection on our call to journey to the tomb and co-create, with God, new life: "God is bringing life to birth, restoring and renewing our world. Do we see it? God is calling us to partner in rolling away the stones and untying the bonds of injustice. Do we hear it? This resurrection hope in the life-giving power of God is not just something for us to say we believe, but it must be encountered and experienced – and it only comes to us who are at the tomb. We must be willing to acknowledge our suffering, and the suffering of the world, and open ourselves up to God's Spirit at work." JoAnn Melina Lopez, M.Div. has been immersed in Catholic formation, education, and action for fifteen years. After completing her undergraduate degree at Saint Joseph's University, she served as a Jesuit Volunteer in Houston, working with asylum seekers and refugees. She received her Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry and spent seven years as Campus Minister for Liturgy at Seattle University. Preaching for the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Crystal Caruana Sullivan offers a reflection on our relationship to God's law and our journey of discipleship: "A 'rule book' may work as a moral guide for a three-year-old. But we need something more than the prescriptive starting point or set of rules or list of laws. We need Jesus. We need Jesus, who takes us deeper into the mystery of God's wisdom – who invites us to go deeper into the heart of God as we live into God's kingdom. And this is the harder route – because it requires that we choose – each and every day – to surrender our complicated opinions and relationship with the law – and to trust in God, to show us how to follow. " Crystal Sullivan lives in Dayton, OH and has served as the Executive Director of Campus Ministry at the University of Dayton, A Catholic Marianist university, since 2011. She holds a Master of Theological Studies from Weston Jesuit School of Theology, bachelors in Religious Studies and Biology from Kalamazoo College, and is a certified Campus Minister and Marianist Educational Associate.
