Imagine churches becoming vibrant hubs of faith, where every member actively contributes to the community using their God-given talents. Discover how embracing accountability and fully participating can transform not only your individual faith journey but the entire body of Christ. Our conversation culminates in a stirring call to live sacrificially for God's eternal kingdom. Mark Clifton and Mark Hallock discuss some tips from Thom Rainer on church revitalization. Substantive changes in a church typically don't hold until has been at a church at least 4-5 years. The most common way to face reality in a church is to look at a 10-year attendance pattern. Revitalization is not something that happens with the snap of a finger. You don't revitalize a church in your power. You do it through God's power. There are a lot of pastors and church leaders who just don't want to ask for help. If there were no risk in church revitalization, every church would be revitalized. Don't get into revitalization if you're afraid to lead by faith. Jeff Martin grew up in northern New Jersey and attended Miami University (OH) where God changed his life's ambitions through the ministry of Cru. He joined Cru staff where he met Mary, and they served for 23 years together. Seven of those years were spent in Bulgaria helping to launch collegiate ministries. Back in the States, Jeff served as the Regional Director for Cru in the Mid-Atlantic. In addition to his RD role, Jeff had the privilege of training hundreds of Cru staff members in Christ-centered preaching, through the Institute for Biblical Studies. Jeff has an MDIV from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.  Since 2013, Jeff has served as the Lead Pastor of Rock Creek Church in Rockville, Maryland. His love for ministry leaders has recently led him to pursue certification with the Society of Church Consultants. In July of 2024, he launched JTM Ministry Coaching with the vision of helping leaders build healthy, gospel-centered ministries. What if the true essence of discipleship isn't in grand gestures but in the small, everyday interactions? This episode of "The Heart of Discipleship" promises to reshape your understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. We're uncovering the often-overlooked, non-glamorous nature of genuine discipleship that takes place in day-to-day encounters. Drawing inspiration from Thom Rainer's analogy of the church as a hospital, we'll discuss how each of us plays a critical role in offering hope, love, and acceptance to everyone who walks through our doors.Join us as we reflect on the transformative story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well from John 4. This encounter highlights how personal testimonies and relational discipleship can break cultural barriers and offer salvation to all. Jesus' compassionate interaction with an ostracized woman reveals the messy yet powerful nature of true discipleship, reminding us that God's grace is available to everyone, regardless of their past. Finally, we discuss "The Call to Disciple-Making" and the personal responsibility each of us holds in spreading Jesus' teachings. Through specific prayer and personal growth within the church community, we emphasize that genuine discipleship happens in everyday life, beyond Sunday services. Our mission is to build the kingdom of God, one person and one conversation at a time, firmly believing that our actions can lead others to Christ. Nobody's even talking about the possibility of mission drift – almost as if “it surely won't happen here.” IF the church has a mission statement, it's only a sentence on the website. The church ministries have been, and continue to be, siloed from each other. Pastoral leaders have lost any sense of vision for the church. Members have expected their pastoral leaders to take care of them primarily rather than reach outsiders. Recent – and sometimes, not so recent, conflict has left scars in the congregation. Leaders hesitate to make hard calls to keep the mission primary. The church has been large enough that the drift is so slow it's almost imperceptible. The church's leadership recruitment process is weak. Resources related to this podcast: “9 Reasons Churches Drift from Their Mission” by Chuck Lawless Anatomy of a Revived Church by Thom Rainer

We must be careful with our attempts to explain the growth of the non-denominational movement. Our information is anecdotal, rather than data-based Non-denominational churches are far from monolithic 5 reasons non-denominational churches are growing. Non-denominational churches tend to be more evangelistic. Non-denominational churches typically invest more financially in reaching their communities. Non-denominational churches usually do not engage in issues of conflict to the level that denominational churches do. Non-denominational churches do not carry the “name” baggage that a denominational church might carry. Non-denominational churches tend to be newer churches that grow faster than older churches.  Resources mentioned: Thom Rainer: 5 Reasons Non-Denominational Churches are Growing

In this episode, we welcome Thom Rainer back to the show. He is a bestselling author, church consultant, former pastor, and CEO of Church Answer, an online community and resource for church leaders. Prior to founding Church Answers, Rainer served as president and CEO of LifeWay Christian Resources. Before coming to LifeWay, he served at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for twelve years where he was the founding dean of the Billy Graham School of Missions and Evangelism. In this interview, we discuss how he finds the time to write so many books, his newest book When the People Pray: An Invitation to Intercede for Your Pastor and Revive Your Church, how many pastors struggling to remain pastors were likely not called to be a pastor to begin with, how a pastor should deal with a funeral where the deceased was not a Christian, why many modern pastors have trouble being courageous in the face of a militantly atheistic culture, how the Devil uses temptation to target pastors, how good pastors balance their study of the Bible with their other duties, and much more.
