"Jesus would be ashamed," wrote one critic of Lois Lowry's seminal work of children's literature, "The Giver." MSNBC host and Citizen board member Ali Velshi invites Lowry onto the show to discuss her opinions about the flood of negative (and positive) reactions to her 1993 YA novel.

Jonas is made a Receiver of Memory by an Elder and is training for the job when he learns that not perfect babies are “released” from the community and taken “Elsewhere.” Jonas learns his father does his job, which enrages him, making him want to leave. In the end, Jonas and “The Giver” decide to have him sneak away with baby Gabriel and try to find life on his own while saving the Community to learn to live with memories and emotions. Lois Lowry won the Newberry Award in 1994 and wrote several sequels to the story. (Jonas lives, by the way.) The Giver is an amazing classic that if you weren’t forced to read it in school, you probably should...like right now. This dystopian world Lois Lowry built is both haunting and intriguing at the same time. It will make you think….DEEP THOUGHTS! In all seriousness, this is a book you have to check out! It is a great reminder of what the world could be if we didn’t embrace our differences and express our emotions freely. Even if you did read this book when you were in school or as a kid, it’s one to check out again as an adult.
