Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, is often not given her due credit for how influential she was in the crushing of the Viking Age. Æthelflæd was raised by Alfred the Great, who would have been a fine model for her future leadership. When she married the Lord of Mercia, she showed she was her father's daughter by teaming up with her brother to drive Vikings from England, and securely handing her throne down to her daughter. Aethelflaed caught the eye last weekend in the Wakeful. Trainer Matthew Smith says he would love them to run along in the Oaks, to give her a chance to really finish off.

Aethelflaed and Bertha are two of the figures discussed in the new history of women in the Middle Ages written by Janina Ramirez. Choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh has taken the heroine who fights Tancredi the crusading knight and reframed the story set to the music composed by Monteverdi's Il Combattimento. Cat Jarman is a bioarchaeologist who has tracked the way a Viking ‘Carnelian' bead travelled to England from 8th-century Baghdad, with all that it tells us about women and power. They join Shahidha Bari to discuss ideas about women as warriors and power brokers. Welcome to episode 8 of Hattie Talks: Inspirational Women. Today I'm talking about Lady of the Mercians, Æðelflǽd (Aethelflaed) - in under 10 minutes. Enjoy!
To prove that my binge of Netflix's The Last Kingdom was solely academic, for today's episode of Works Not Cited, I'm discussing the lives of Alfred the Great's daughters; Aethelflaed, Aethelgifu, and Aelfthryth. Though hard to find in the historical record, each of them ascended to a position of authority- they were the sole Lady of the Mercians, Abbess of Shaftesbury, and Countess of Flanders, respectively- and took part in late 9th and early 10th century nation building. How reliable is BT internet? Did Stiapa appear in The Gladiator? And just how did Aethelflaed age 10 years in just 6 months? All questions raised as we delve back into the first two episodes of series 2! Technology worked against us this week, so apologies for that. What did you think of the start of series 2? If you’re an Anglophile (lover of the English) like me, you’ve probably heard of Boudica, the warrior queen who took on the Romans. But did you know that there’s *another* British warrior queen with an equally fascinating tale? Around the 8th century, Viking raiders were taking over regions of England left and right. Alfred the Great dreamed of not only fighting them off, but uniting England under one king. Sadly, he died before seeing his dream come true. Alfred’s daughter, Aethelflaed, leaped onto my radar in The Last Kingdom (available on Netflix, though very violent, so don’t watch unless you have a parent’s permission). I loved her storyline (from season 2) so much, I couldn’t help but Google what happened to her later! Obviously not everything from the show is true, but later in life, she went on to do extraordinary things. Aethelflaed took on the Vikings, negotiating with them when possible and fighting them when it wasn’t. She was a shrewd tactician, and knew exactly which roads and river passages to attack to make the battle as swift as possible. It got to the point where her enemies (the freaking Vikings) would surrender without a fight! Learn more about this amazing woman in episode 71 of the Vocabbett podcast! LIBRO CONSIGLIATO: B. CW: Descriptions of violent scenes. Hosts Alyssa Fikse (@lyssiefikse) and Jessica Toomer (@jessica_toomer) are crushed that season 4 has come to an end. As the Danes and Saxons work through their differences, there is new hope for peace between Edward, Aethelflaed, and Sygtrygger. Meanwhile, Uhtred and Brida have to face off one last time. What does The Last Kingdom even look like with peace? As we hope for a fifth season, let's remember what it's all about: destiny is all, bitches.
The Danes have an easy time of things while invading Winchester while Aethelflaed is crowned Lady of Mercia and Edward makes plans to secure their Northern borders. Just A Couple of Arselings hosts Jessica Toomer and Alyssa Fikse might be ready to bow to a new king after this episode, y'all.
Never skip #TheLastKingdom intro/recaps: we love them so much, we created our own to talk season 4 (Series 4 for our friends across the pond). Uthred heads back to Bebbanburg with Finan, Sihtric & Osferth, while King Edward has trouble with his mother Aelswith and his wife Aelflaed's father Aethelhelm. While his sister Aethelflaed is ready to dump her husband Aethelred is excited for Eardwulf's sister Eadith. We've got fightin' Fathers: Beocca & Pyrlig! Oh yeah, Danes like Brida, Cnut and Haesten are out there ready for trouble. Based on the book series from Bernard Cornwell. Hosts Alyssa Fikse (@lyssiefikse) and Jessica Toomer (@jessica_toomer) are a little heartbroken at some romantic developments in episode 8 of 'The Last Kingdom's fourth season, but we are so glad to see Aethelflaed get the credit that she deserves. Things in Mercia are looking pretty dicey with everyone attempting power grab, and some things won't be fixed with some religion and nudity. Can Edward put aside his pride and accept his sister as Mercia's ruler? Meanwhile, Sigtrygger continues to grow in power in the North, and we are just about ready to join his fan club. Things are getting *dramatic* to say the least.
Hosts Alyssa Fikse (@lyssiefikse) and Jessica Toomer (@jessica_toomer) were not quite emotionally prepared to handle a plague episode, but here we are. As Uhtred and the Cookham Crew are on the run with a gaggle of children, Aethelflaed works to be reunited with her daughter, Aelfwynn. Edward struggles to keep things under control in Mercia as he deals with the infighting amongst the Aelderman. With all of this drama happening, "the sickness" also finds its way to Mercia and people have more crazy ideas about how it's spread than your grandma's Facebook page.
SYFY Wire Fangrrls writers Alyssa Fikse (@lyssiefikse) and Jessica Toomer (@jessica_toomer) are stressed to the max in this episode because all of our faves are in grave danger. The tension building between the Danes and Saxons (and the many factions within) comes to a head at the Battle of Tettenhall. As Uhtred and Aethelflaed lead the Mercians into battle, the question remains: will Edward show up? How pissed will he be when he gets there? Who will we lose on the battlefield? Tune in for episode 4 and obsess with us over every use of terrain and swing of the sword.
“It is shortsighted to say that feminism is a Biblical problem or that it is predominantly a Western problem.” ~Audrey Rindlisbacher Although most women in medieval times did not have the opportunity to utilize all of their gifts and talents , some amazing women were able to rise above their status and have a positive impact on society. Here is your introduction to seven of them! Through learning their stories we are introduced to a different view of women in this time period. We see women leading in political positions, as artisans, through running organizations, as writers, and other capacities. We also come to see the reality that even in medieval times, there were men who respected women, believed in them and even followed them. SYFY Wire Fangrrls writers Alyssa Fikse (@lyssiefikse) and Jessica Toomer (@jessica_toomer) recap the fifth episode of season three, the one that welcomes a new member to the Uhtred Ragnarson fan club. With Alfred wasting away, Edward steps up to the plate, aligning himself with Uhtred who swallows his pride and rides with Aethelflaed to seek help in defeating Haesten from his former bro. While he's getting judged by a fake wittan, Brida's mourning the loss of Ragnar and the Danes are scrambling to find a new leader. Will Uhtred get Skade back? Will Brida align with Cnut? Will Aethelflaed just kill her turd of a husband already?
SYFY Wire Fangrrls writers Alyssa Fikse (@lyssiefikse) and Jessica Toomer (@jessica_toomer) are worried about Uhtred in the third episode of this season. He may claim to be “a Dane for life,” but his men didn’t sign up for this and Leofric continues to haunt him. After working so hard to build Wessex, can Uhtred justify being instrumental in tearing it down? Elsewhere in Mercia, Aethelflaed is alerted to the fact that Aethelred wants her dead. Husband of the year over here! She flees with her closest people and sends word to Uhtred begging for help. Beocca brings Uhtred the letter and reminds him of the good times in Wessex. If he goes to help Aethelflaed, Ragnar tells him that it’s over and to never come back. Will Uhtred FINALLY make a choice over which side he’s on? It’s only been two and a half seasons of angst.
SYFY Wire Fangrrls writers Alyssa Fikse (@lyssiefikse) and Jessica Toomer (@jessica_toomer_) return for season three of The Last Kingdom, ready for a more mature Uhtred. Of course, the world won’t let our favorite Danish Saxon live a life in peace for too long, and a new villain is here to bring hell to Wessex: Skade. She’s got various magic tricks and curses at her disposal, and she’s got her sights set on Uhtred. It’s a mess. Elsewhere in the realm, Alfred’s health is deteriorating at a rapid rate, Aethelflaed is miserable in her marriage to the wretched Aethelred, Edward is decidedly not ready to be king, and there is possibly the most tragic death yet. It’s A LOT. Welcome back to The Last Kingdom, where everything can and will end in chaos.
SYFY Wire Fangrrls writers Alyssa Fikse (@lyssiefikse) and Jessica Toomer (@jessica_toomer_) have survived the second season of The Last Kingdom, but some of our favorites have not. Erik and Aethelflaed’s plan to escape is a desperate one, and perhaps not even Uhtred can help them be together forever. Odda and Alfred are at odds over when and how to unite the armies of Wessex, leading to some betrayal, murder, and hurt feelings. Think a playground fight between besties with much higher stakes. Will Wessex succeed in driving the Danish threat from England, or will Alfred’s hubris finally be his downfall?
SYFY Wire Fangrrls writers Alyssa Fikse (@lyssiefikse) and Jessica Toomer (@jessica_toomer_) fangirl their way through the penultimate episode of season two of The Last Kingdom. Aethelflaed gets taken by the Danes, and if you thought that was bad news, you would be incorrect. Our favorite lady of Mercia finds true love with the lover of shoulder pads, Erik himself, and these two offer viewers a tragic romance for the ages. Back in Wessex, things are less lovey dovey. No one can agree on how to handle this hostage situation, and the kingdom is getting hammered on all sides. Will Alfred listen to Uhtred’s counsel or will he continue to put too much faith in the loathsome Aethelred? Unfortunately, you probably already know the answer to that one.
SYFY Wire Fangrrls writers Alyssa Fikse (@lyssiefikse) and Jessica Toomer (@jessica_toomer) are always Team Uhtred, but episode three of the second season is Peak “Give Uhtred A Hug” time. Everyone’s favorite alderman is lost at sea in nightmare conditions. Alfred’s indifference doesn’t seem so bad now that Uhtred has been sold into slavery by Guthred and is worried about his feet rotting off in standing water. Back in Wessex, marrying off Aethelflaed becomes Alfred and Aelswith’s main focus, and boy, do they pick a prize winner. Jk, Aelthelred is terrible! The future queen deserves better!
There are more weird trolls to kill this week: Big trolls, little trolls, trolls under bridges, trolls with silly hair, and trolls that hurt your feelings. Next week we're back to the main story!
What have Aethelflaed and Eppalima been up to? They've been helping the garden gnomes with their troll problem. This probably isn't our most interesting adventure, but it gets the job done.
She's the most influential woman that English history forgot, says Tom Holland - Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians, daughter of Alfred the Great. Living and ruling at a time when the Anglo-Saxons were fighting back against the Vikings, Aethelflaed became a key figure in the construction of what we know today as England. But how much do we actually know? Joining Tom and Matthew Parris in the studio is Sarah Foot, the Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical history. Together they pick though the life of an astonishing character recently recreated in Bernard Cornwell's series The Last Kingdom and played by Millie Brady; and who also might have inspired Eowyn in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The producer in Bristol is Miles Warde
Here's the second of this week's character themes. This one is used to introduce "The Adventures of Aethelflaed" side episodes. It's supposed to sound bright and cheerful, and maybe even innocent. That's definitely part of Aethelflaed's character. On the other hand, she is not reluctant to gut a person. I don't know if that makes her complex or just scary.
MERRY CHRISTMAS! And what could be more festive than talk of pious Christians finally overcoming their pagan occupiers by clever use of marrying enemy Earls, raising a kick-arse nephew and stealing a corpse in the name of patriotism. After studying the large stone by the Eastern Bubble, Paxton, Tara, Aethelflaed, Aster, Eppalima, and Lumpen make camp, but are attacked by undead. The fight takes a while to resolve. Please be patient.
Aethelflaed and her new friend, Aster Fortuna, have broken into a museum to steal a powerful magic item. They've just encountered the security system, however! Will they evade the dangerous automaton? Will they they use the environment against it? No, not really. But I think the music turned out well!
With all of our heroes in jail, surely nothing interesting is going to happen until the trial and their eventual execution, right? Wrong! It's time for Aethelflaed to have another exciting side adventure, this time with our new player character, Aster Fortuna (played by our new player, Chris)!
The idea of a powerful woman in the Middle Ages seems like an oxymoron. Females in this time are imagined to be damsels in distress, trapped in a high tower, and waiting for knights to rescue them, all while wearing traffic-cones for a hat. After rescue, their lives improved little. Their career choices were to be either a docile queen, housewife, or be burned at the stake for witchcraft. But what if this image of medieval women is a complete fiction? It turns out that it is. Powerful female rulers fill the Middle Ages. Anglo-Saxon queen Aethelflaed personally led armies into direct combat with Vikings in the 900s and saved England from foreign invasion. Byzantine Empress Theodora kept the empire from falling apart during the Nika Revolts and stopped her husband Justinian from fleeing Constantinople. Catherine of Siena almost single-handedly restored the papacy to Rome in the 1300s and navigated the brutal and male-dominated world of Italian politics. In this episode, part 1 of a 3-part series, I look at the lives of three extraordinarily powerful women in the Middle Ages. In particular I look at the lives of Empress Theodora of Byzantium, Aethelflaed of the Mercians (a proto-English kingdom), and Eleanor of Aquitaine, the most powerful landholder in Europe in the 12th century. We will explore how they managed to ascend the throne, what made their accomplishments so notable, and the impact they had on their respective societies after their deaths.
Our heroes have surrendered to the guards of the City of Two, and are now in jail, awaiting trial. Aethelflaed is the first to be interviewed by a member of the Green Cloaks, a secretive organization of rangers and druids who work for the Great Forest. The question is, does Aethelflaed actually know anything?
Find out what happens to Bandybrad Gurrow and Linley Bever, as they rise through the floors of Mun's tower, and encounter some unexpected problems. Will they make it out with valuable treasure? More importantly, will they make it out alive? This is the second part of our test recording, from way back before we started the main podcast story. We'll go back to Tara, Finn, Paxton, and Aethelflaed next time.

Eowyn, the Shieldmaiden of Rohan, is one of the best characters from the “Lord of the Rings.” But J.R.R. Tolkien didn't invent her out of thin air.
