How do you feel about your neck? Maybe you only think about it when you’re sore from sleeping wrong or from sitting at a desk all day. But for centuries, humans have worried about their necks, decorated them with jewelry and clothes and ties, and exploited their weaknesses with knives and garrotes and guillotines. This hour, a look at necks — human and animal. Plus, the history and symbolism of the classic turtleneck. GUESTS: Kent Dunlap: Professor of Biology at Trinity College, Hartford, and author of The Neck: A Natural and Cultural History Nancy MacDonell: Fashion journalist and fashion historian. Amy Chavez speaks with Lesley Downer, an expert on Japanese culture and history who writes both fiction and non-fiction. Her novels transport readers to the intriguing world of 19th-century Japan, while her non-fiction takes us along the Narrow Road to the Deep North with poet Matsuo Basho; behind the scenes of the Japanese geisha community; and into the intrigues of the richest family in Japan. In this episode, she discusses her just-released The Shortest History of Japan: From Mythical Origins to Pop Culture Powerhouse, which provides a concise yet detailed account of Japanese history.Lesley highlights the significance of historical figures like Himiko, the shaman queen who unified Yamatai, and Empresses Suiko and Koken, who ruled Japan in their own right. She also touches on the feminist movement in Japan, particularly the contributions of Hiratsuka Raicho and Akiko Yosano. Lastly, she shares insights into her writing career, including her transition from nonfiction to fiction and her research on geisha.Lesley mentions Yosano Akiko's poem "Until Death Do Us Part" ("Shini tanoma") which she wrote before her brother went off to war:Until Death Do Us Partby Yosano AkikoThough my body dies,My soul will remain with you.Until the end of time,Let us pledge to be together,Until death do us part.(translation: ChatGPT 4o)Lesley's three favorite books on Japan:1. Japan Journal, 1855-1861 (1964) by Henry Heusken, which covers the author's experiences during his time as the secretary and interpreter for Townsend Harris, the first U.S. Consul General to Japan.2. As We Saw Them: The First Japanese Embassy to the United States (1979) by Masao Miyoshi, about the first Japanese diplomats who visited the United States in 1860.3. Taiko: An Epic Novel of War and Glory in Feudal Japan (1992) by Yoshikawa Eiij, a historical novel that tells the story of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's greatest warlords and unifiers during the Sengoku period. Yseult Williams - editorial director, journalist, award-winning author, and an “Empress of Fashion.” In this episode of Turning Points, Patricia Killeen welcomed Yseult Williams. Yseult's father, Patrick, was English, and her mother, Darina, is Irish. She studied at the Sorbonne and Lille University and had an Erasmus year in Italy. At the end of her studies, she picked up her bags and headed for the City of Light. Being trilingual (English-French-Italian), she initially worked as a translator briefly. She subsequently approached magazines with ideas for articles and freelanced in the competitive arena of French feminine and news magazines, including Elle and VSD. In 2002, she was made deputy editor-in-chief at Femme Actual and was subsequently recruited by Tina Kieffer as editor-in-chief of Marie Claire. In 2005, the Marie Claire group entrusted her with managing Marie France, a responsibility she held until 2008, when she was recruited by Mondadori, the Italian publishing house, to launch the French version of the weekly magazine Grazia. In 2013, she relaunched the mythical Lui magazine as chief editor with Frédéric Beigbeder. During her career, she has also worked for the BBC and various French TV channels. In 2015, she was appointed chief editor of Le Grand Journal, the former renowned daily show on Canal+ TV. After years at the helm of the French press and TV, Yseult decided to use her pen to write books. She has published three books in French; in Impératrices de la mode (Empresses of Fashion) La Martinière, 2015, she painted the portrait of six great historical editors of women's magazines, women who had much in common with herself and were often faced with similar choices. Her second book, La Splendeur des Brunhoff (The Splendor of the Brunhoffs), Fayard 2018, won the Readers' Prize for Pocket Book in 2020. It is dedicated to the Brunhoff family, which launched Vogue France and Vu magazines. Jean de Brunhoff also created the character Babar. With her third book, On l'appelle Maïco (She was called Maïco), Grasset 2021, dedicated to Marie-Claude Vaillant-Couturier, she won the prestigious Simone-Veil 2022 literary prize. She is now writing a book devoted to Hélène Lazareff, who founded Elle magazine in 1945, which Grasset will publish. In 2021, she joined Alma Studio (founded by Martin Solveig) as Editorial Director, where she is currently working. Alma Studio produces original stories and music written and composed for audio for children aged 3 to 10. Yseult's English podcast for Alma Studio will be launched next year. Looking forward to Yseult's books being published in English and to seeing her fascinating characters on the big screen.
This week Nancy MacDonell makes her debut on HATM Podcast to talk about Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Anna Wintour, and her book, Empresses of Seventh Avenue, which tells the history of the women who built New York into a fashion powerhouse in the years after World War II. This is a blast, and for me, and eye opening conversation. Hope you enjoy.About our guest:Nancy MacDonell is a fashion journalist and fashion historian. She writes the Wall Street Journal column "Fashion with a Past," in which she explores the historic roots of current fashion trends. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Elle, Vogue, and many other publications. She is the author of five books, including The Classic Ten: The True Story of the Little Black Dress and Nine Other Fashion Favorites. Nancy is an adjunct lecturer in fashion history at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She was born in Montréal and lives in Brooklyn with her family.
Today on the show we are talking about American fashion, specifically Empresses of Seventh Avenue: World War II, New York City, and the Birth of American Fashion, the brand-new book from Nancy MacDonell, out August 27. Prior to World War II, American designers were nothing short of second-class citizens to the French. But, after the Nazis invaded Paris during the war, everything changed for French fashion, and by the time the war ended in 1945, the American look was in fashion. What is the American look, you ask? Nancy answers that for us today, as well as introduces us to a fascinating cast of characters who helped birth American fashion: Elizabeth Hawes, Eleanor Lambert, and Claire McCardell, for starters. Soon, American fashion began to beat the French at their own game, and this is all a leadup to the Battle of Versailles, which we interviewed Robin Givhan about on the show last year. American fashion is thriving now—at $500 billion, it's the largest fashion industry in the world—but there would likely be no Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Tory Burch, Halston, or Michael Kors without the Empresses of Seventh Avenue. These women have largely been forgotten to history—that is, until Nancy MacDonnell came along. Nancy is a fashion journalist and fashion historian that writes The Wall Street Journal column “Fashion with a Past,” which explores the historic roots of current fashion trends. Nancy has written everywhere from The New York Times to Elle, Vogue, and many other publications, and she's written five books, including The Classic Ten: The True Story of the Little Black Dress and Nine Other Fashion Favorites. In addition to her work as a writer, Nancy is also an adjunct lecturer in fashion history at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Let's take a listen to what she has to say. Empresses of Seventh Avenue: World War II, New York City, and the Birth of American Fashion by Nancy MacDonell
Lauren takes a minute to catch up with Nancy MacDonell, author of "Empresses of Seventh Avenue: World War II, New York City, and the Birth of American Fashion," to discuss designers Claire McCardell and Elizabeth Hawes, and why Yves Saint Laurent is still bigger than Halston and Bill Blass. China has had many influential and ambitious Empresses in its history, such as Empress Wu, but Zhao Feiyan certainly gives them all a run for their money. Zhao Feiyan was born into a relatively poor family, but due to her talent as a dancer, she was able to get the attention of the emperor, and from there, hijinx ensued. If you think the kids in your family are a lot to handle, imagine having over a dozen of them! That was the reality for the royal women in today's video. The primary expectation of Queens and other well born women of the past was to have as many children as possible to secure their husband's dynasty and bare a few spares to be used in advantageous political marriages. Their fertility was their life. They were married early and caught on a treadmill of pregnancy, birth, handing their babies over to be raised by wet-nurses and tutors, and hoping back into bed to conceive again as soon as possible. Surely they looked forward to the relief of menopause. Here are 9 Queens and Empresses who bore an extraordinary number of children: Mumtaz Mahal, Mughal Empress Consort - 14 Children Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen Consort of Great Britain & Ireland - 15 Children Anna Jagellonica, Queen Consort of Germany, Bohemia & Hungary - 15 Children Eleanor of Castile, Queen Consort of England - 16 Children Keran, Queen Consort of Armenia - 16 Children Maria Theresa, Holy Roman Empress - 16 Children Maria Carolina of Austria, Queen Consort of Naples and Sicily - 17 Children Anne, Queen of Great Britain - 18 Children Darejan Dadiani, Queen Consort of Georgia - 23 Children Maria Theresa's Daughters: https://youtu.be/vlLI1bp6BeA https://youtu.be/mtvFd_ciI5Y Maria Theresa's Sons: https://youtu.be/S1lp9qMACfo Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Send us a Text Message.Alchemy is a term all the way from Medieval Times, today we dumb it down by calling it “magic.” Either way, cards play a big part in understanding alchemy( magic) in life, and actually using it can help us get to feeling our most highest energies. For example, a winning hand in poker means you're at the top of your game, right? Best of the best…at least for that round. A little richer now too, hmm? Nice! And, Energy wise you're feeling like a boss. Because you are! Thing is, we can embody this feeling in life too, but how can we feel like those bosses, those Emperors or Empresses, as we like to say in Tarot, more often as we navigate thru these lives of ours? Wanna know? Then, play on, my friend! because in this episode I'll explain how transformation works in our lives, how we can alchemize ourselves here in good old 2022 and beyond, that alchemy is not something that died off in the Middle Ages, and that it is very much alive in all of us today.

It originally airedin China as The Legend of Zhen Huan. The Legend of Zhen Huan(《甄嬛传》)。 Selah看完一部分后,感受是:• I have an ‘old time' feel to it. • very Chinese, traditional feeling 很有中国传统的感觉*air v. Selah评价这部剧的翻译是:● It is pretty good. ● It is translated very beautifully. ● You can still get the feel of the show. Empresses in the Palace*empress /ˈemprəs/ n. 皇后*emperor /ˈempərər/ n. 皇帝*palace n. 皇宫(故宫博物院the Palace Museum)There are 6 episodes and each episode is about 90 minutes long. 第一集叫做:The Pilot 为什么很多美剧的第一集(the first episode)都叫The Pilot ?The Pilot要给观众展示的是the themes and tones of the show(剧集的主题和基调),它会告诉你,what you'll get if you keep watching the show。“pilot”这个词有“飞行员”的意思,电视剧集的“pilot”的作用,就像飞行员steers a plane and controls where it goes(操纵飞机并控制它的去向)一样。 *episode/ˈepɪsoʊd/ n. Why didn't you call me “my dear”?(“四郎”翻译成了“my dear”)● 是,娘娘! Don't worry, my lady.● 一丈红 : TheScarlet Redscarlet /ˈskɑːrlət/猩红的,a brilliant, very bright red colorIt is worn by bishops in the catholic church. It's not striking enough. Then I will award Attendant XiaThe Scarlet Red.*striking /ˈstraɪkɪŋ/ adj. 显著的* award /əˈwɔːrd/ v. 奖励美国有本小说叫The ScarletLetter(《红字》),主要讲的是一个女人因为affair(婚外情),然后发生的一系列bad things。“scarlet”和sin(原罪)以及something evil(邪恶的事)有关,表示“罪孽深重”。不得不说,“一丈红”翻译为“TheScarlet Red”,绝了!● 别人行礼后,皇上或皇后常说:起来吧。You may rise. Your Majesty,please select a concubine.*Your Majesty:陛下*concubine /ˈkɑ:ŋkjubaɪn/ n. His majestyfavors her.*favor /ˈfeɪvər/ v. 比较喜欢;宠爱● 失宠: lost the favorShe has lost the Emperor's favor.*favor n. I truly cannot bear it!*bear v. The Office of Punishment(2) Ranks & Titles 后宫嫔妃等级● 小主: Young mistress ● 答应:2nd Attendantattendant /əˈtendənt/ n. 服务员*light attendant空乘人员*room attendant客房服务员*train attendant列车服务员● 常在: 1st Attendant● 贵人: NobleLady● 嫔:Concubine /ˈkɑ:ŋkjubaɪn/菀嫔:Concubine Wan 晋菀嫔为妃:Let's promote Concubine Wan to Consort.*promote /prəˈmoʊt/ v. I grant you the title of Noble Consort.*grant /ɡrænt/授予,给予的都是big deal(很重要的东西或事情)。 Do what I'm allowed. The rest I leave tofate.*fate /feɪt/ n. I will never forget your kindness as long as I live.● 不入虎穴,焉得虎子: A tigercubcannot be caught without entering the tiger's lair.*cub (熊、狮、狐狸等的)幼兽,崽*lair /ler/ n.(野兽的)巢穴● 太阳从西边出来了: Pigs may well fly!(猪也会飞?)● 兵行险招: It's worth the risk.● 她非池中之物,迟早的事: She's an extraordinarygirl. Itisjust a matter of time.*extraordinary /ɪkˈstrɔːrdəneri/ adj.

Photo: Peng Shuai's statement that has caused her to be disappeared by the Chinese Communist Party. Screenshot/capture of Peng Shuai's Weibo post on 2 Nov 2021 regarding Zhang Gaoli. Peng Shuai Nov 2 22:07 from Huawei . "I know it's impossible to explain clearly, and even if I were to talk about it it's useless. But still I want to talk about it. I feel so unbearably phony, I admit that I am not a good girl, a terrible terrible girl. Approximately three years ago vice premier Zhang Gaoli you retired, looked for Dr. Liu of the Tianjin Tennis Center and got in touch with me again, asked me for a time to play, at the Kang Ming Hotel in Beijing. After our AM session, your wife Kang Jie and you brought me to your home. Then brought me to a room at your residence, like that time over 10 years ago or prior* in Tianjin, wanted to have sexual relationship* with me. On the afternoon that day I was very scared, had not at all anticipated that things would end up like that, one person helping stand guard outside, because no one would have believed that the wife would be willing. Seven years ago or prior* we had sexual relationship* once, afterwards you were promoted to the Politburo Standing Committee, left for Beijing, and didn't contact me again. Originally I buried everything inside my heart, if you fundamentally don't plan on being responsible, why did you still bother to come around and look for me, bring me to your home and compel* me to have relationship* with you? Yes it's I who do not have evidence, while it's fundamentally impossible to leave any evidence. Afterwards you kept denying it, but truly it was you who favored me first, otherwise I would not have been able to come into contact with you. On the afternoon that day I originally did not agree and kept crying, had supper with you and aunt Kang Jie together, you said the universe is very very big, the Earth is a grain of sand within the universe, we humans are not even a grain of sand, and spoke about much much more, so that I could let go of thoughts and burdens. Nonetheless after supper I was also unwilling, you said you hated me! And said in those seven years you had never forgotten about me, will treat me well etc. . . . scared and nervous and carrying my feelings for you from seven years ago or prior* I agreed . . . so yes we had sexual relationship*. Feelings are a very complicated thing, impossible to explain clearly, from that day on I re-opened my love for you, then during the days that I spent with you, just from interacting with you you are a very very nice person, treated me quite well too, we chatted about modern history all the way back to ancient eras, you told me knowledge of many things and economics and philosophy, endless topics. Together we played board games*, sang, played ping-pong, billiards, and tennis we could always play until we couldn't be merrier, our personalities were so compatible as if everything matched. Since I was little having left home very young, I've been extremely deprived of affection, so facing all that's happened, I've never considered myself to be a good girl, I hate myself, hate why I had to come to this world, to experience this calamity. You told me that you love me, very very much, and hoped that in the next life we could meet when you're 20 and I 18. You said you are very lonely, very pitiable by yourself, we could chat forever, talk on and on without end, you said that with your position there's no way to get a divorse, and had we met when you were still in Shandong, you might still be able to get a divorce, but now there's no way. I've thought about accompanying you just like this unknown by the outside world, in the beginning things were okay, but as time passed they changed, too many instances of injustice and insult. Every time you let me visit, behind your back your wife said so many nasty and insulting things to me, all kinds of caustic mockery and ridicules. I said I like eating duck tongues, aunt Kang Jie would say right in front of me ~eww so disgusting. When there was smog in Beijing in the winter I said the air quality was not very good sometimes, aunt Kang Jie would tell me, that's in your rural areas, we do not feel it over here. And so forth many many similar things were said, when you were present she would not speak in such fashion, almost like us, there was one set of behaviors when the two of us were spending time together, but when other people were present you would treat me differently**. [Remainder of the statement is below, at the end.] #PRC: Deriding Gu and Disappearing Peng at the Olympics. @GordonGChang, Gatestone, Newsweek, The Hill https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-02-14/china-mustn-t-embrace-eileen-gu-as-patriot-veteran-editor-warns .. .. .. ** Peng Shuai's statement that has caused her to be disappeared by the Chinese Communist Party, second part. . . . I've told you before, hearing those words so often made me feel especially wronged and hurt, from the day I met you until now I've never used any of your money, let alone using you to obtain any benefit or perk, but this thing called title and status is so important. I had it coming for all of this, bringing disgrace upon myself. From start to finish you've always told me to keep our relationship a secret, especially never to tell my mom about our relationship as a man and a woman, because it was she who saw me off near the Church of the Saviour, Beijing everytime, afterwards I had to change into your household's vehicle before it was okay to enter your courtyard. She always thought I was going to play Mahjong and cards, to hang out at your place. In our respective life each of us is a real-life invisible person, your wife is like the queen from Empresses in the Palace, while words cannot describe how unbearable I feel, many times I thought am I still a person? I feel I am a walking corpse, pretending, pretending everyday, which me is the real me? I shouldn't have come to this world, but neither do I have the courage to die. I very much wish to live more simply, but things didn't go my way. There was a very big dispute on the night of the 30th, you said to go to your house again on the afternoon of the 2nd for us to talk things out, today at noon you called and said something came up and for us to re-connect later, shirking everything, using the excuse of re-connecting later ......, just like this "disappearing" like seven years ago or prior*, after playing around you change your mind the moment you no longer want me. You said what's between us isn't transactional, true, the feeling between us is unrelated to money, power, but I have no way to put my feelings from these three years to rest, have difficulties facing them. You're always afraid I might carry some recording device, leave evidence and so forth. True, beside myself I haven't left any evidence or proof, no audio recordings, no videos, only the true experience of how I've been twisted. I know that to you the powerful and high-ranking vice premier Zhang Gaoli, you've said that you're not afraid. But even if it's hitting rock with eggs, as a moth flying towards flames sacrificing myself I would still reveal what has transpired with you. With your intelligence and strategems you would certainly deny this or you could even serve everything back at me, you can take things not seriously at all to such an extent. You are always saying that you hope your mom is watching over you from the heavens, I'm a bad girl and do not deserve to be a mother, while you are a father with son and daughter, I've asked you even if it were your adopted daughter would you have compelled* her to do so? With all of this that you've done in this life would you be able to face your mom with a clear conscience afterwards? All or both of us* appear very proper and sanctimonious ...... Translator's notes: (年前) years ago or prior: This could mean either a number of years ago/before the present, or a number of years prior to some other reference point established in the context. One interpretation or the other may or may not match the chronology of Zhang Gaoli's career. In certain places in her post, neither interpretation seems to match known facts, so Peng might have made some typos or small errors. On the other hand, it's clearer that whenever she refers to "three years", it means counting back from the present. (性关系/关系) sexual relationship/relationship: While this could refer to Peng's relationship overall, it can also be a euphemism for sexual encounter or intercourse. Her text does not provide additional details. Depending on the context, sexual relationship can also be shortened to relationship, but the latter does not usually refer to a relationship specifically of a sexual nature. (逼) compel: While it's possible for this to mean some involvement of threats or physical force, it could also mean to pressure by persuasion or to push very hard for one's demands, especially in non-formal conversations. Peng's text does not provide additional information. (下棋) played board games: Specifically board games with deployable pieces such as Go, chess, elephant chess, checkers. (我们都) all or both of us: Because this is the last sentence and appears to be incomplete, it's uncertain how many people are being referred to, although in my opinion it probably refers to all of us i.e. more than 2 persons here. For ~90% of the content of her post, I've retained her exact wording, order, repetition, and punctuation (except for asterisks in the translation to indicate my notes). The result should be free of any additions, omissions, interpretations, or changes in meaning. .. .. ..
Abraham Lincoln, Stag-do-esque antics, and forbidden overnight stays within the Vatican - the tale of the Last Emperor of Mexico sounds more like a period drama and not the sadly true and tragic end of Maximilian I. This week James is joined by Edward Shawcross to talk about the titular character of his new book 'The Last Emperor of Mexico: Disaster in the New World'. Together they discuss inadequate leadership, paranoid Empresses, and the role the American Civil war played beyond it's borders. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hithttps://access.historyhit.com/?utm_source=audio&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=Podcast+Campaign&utm_id=PodcastTo download, go to Android or Apple store:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.historyhit&hl=en_GB&gl=UShttps://apps.apple.com/gb/app/history-hit/id1303668247If you're enjoying this podcast and looking for more fascinating Warfare content then subscribe to our Warfare newsletter. "Hey men, what are you planning to do better? Because you need to do better. Here are ideas on how you should treat women better. Talk to your friend who is “kind of a creep” at work. Don't talk over women. If you are asked to be on a panel/team and see that it's all men, say something. Maybe even refuse the spot! When you see another guy talk over a woman, say: “Hey, she was saying something.” Learn to read a fucking room. Don't call women “crazy” in a professional setting. Don't use your “feminism” as a way to get women to trust you. Show us in your day-to-day life, not in your self-congratulatory social media. Don't touch women you don't know, and honestly, ask yourself why you feel the need to touch women in general. Do you feel that any woman on earth owes you something? She doesn't. Even if you're like, “Hm, but what about basic respect?” ask yourself if you've shown her the same. Don't send pictures of your penis unless she just asked for them. If a woman says no to a date, don't ask her again. If a woman has not given an enthusiastic “yes” to sex, back the hell off. If a woman is really drunk, she cannot consent to you and she also cannot consent to your buddy who seems to be trying something. Your buddy is your responsibility, so say something and intervene. If you do the right thing, don't expect praise or payment or a pat on the back or even a “thank you from that woman”. Congratulations, you were baseline decent. Involve women in your creative projects, then let them have equal part in them. Don't make misogynistic jokes. Don't expect women to be “nice” or “cute” and don't get upset when they aren't those things. Don't make assumptions about a woman's intelligence, capabilities or desires based on how she dresses. Pay women as much as you pay men. If a woman tells you that you fucked up, and you feel like shit, don't put it on that woman to make you feel better. Apologize without qualification and then go away. Don't punish women for witnessing your vulnerability. Don't get defensive when you get called out. Don't need to literally witness a man being horrible in order to believe that he's horrible. Trust and believe women. Don't use your power to get women's attention/company/sex/etc. Be aware of your inherent power in situations and use it to protect women, especially via talking to other men. Stop thinking that because you're also marginalized or a survivor that you cannot inflict pain or oppress women. If women's pain makes you feel pain, don't prize your pain above hers, or make that pain her problem. Don't read a list like this and think that most of these don't apply to you." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

The idea was born on a road trip from Waco, Texas to Ferndale, California. Merritt Brodt and her daughter, Callie Alexandre, had gone to the Lone Star State to source antiques for their artisan shop, The Farmer's Daughter, in downtown Ferndale. Callie, whose husband's married family owns and operates Alexandre Farms (one of the few organic dairies to produce A2/A2 milk AND secure coveted shelf space at Whole Foods' across the country) had the idea. “What if we renovated the barn and turned it into an Airbnb?” Merritt, mother of 3, grandmother of 4, owner of 500 cows, and founder of The Farmer's Daughter, was skeptical at first. She had a pretty full plate already! Upon arriving back home in their lush, almost Ireland-like town just a few hours north of San Francisco, Callie was able to convince Merrit and her husband Brian to give it a shot...and the whole family got to work. Their mission? To create a piece of heaven on Earth. Tune in to hear Merritt and her daughter-in-law Amanda share the inspiring story of how the family came together to bring The Farm Stay at the Bluff to life. Oh, and the next time you're at the grocery store and pick up a delicious block of Rumiano's Cheese or a pint of Humboldt Creamery's ice cream, say a little "thank you" to Merritt and the Brodt family...chances are, the milk came from one of their cows! Hua Fei tries desperately to cling onto power and is tricked into believing that her family is in the clear. Zhen Huan makes a scene at a banquet and is banished by the Emperor. Sensing that all is not right, the Empress orders An Ling Rong to join Zhen Huan as a sort of double agent to spy on Zhen Huan. However, the chess pieces are in place for the final checkmate to the Nian family. Huai Fei regains power and continues her lavish ways. Her brother, Nian Geng Yao, even openly mocks the Emperor. The Emperor deals a final blow to the Nian family by capturing the rest of the Nian faction including the 10th, 8th, and 9th Princes. By the end of the episode, the once powerful Hua Fei is now demoted to a lowly 1st class attendant and her brother has been sentenced to death
