Freda Cooper talks to actors Stephen Fry and Lena Dunham about their new film, Treasure, which is in cinemas right now. TREASURE is an impactful and moving film from writer/director Julia Von Heinz based on the book Too Many Men by Lily Brett. The film is the third in von Heinz's ‘Aftermath Trilogy' exploring the legacy of Germany's Nazi past following 2013's Hanna's Journey and And Tomorrow the Entire World, Germany's 2020 Oscar submission. It stars Lena Dunham (“Girls,” Sharp Stick) and Stephen Fry (V For Vendetta, Wilde). A father-daughter road trip set in 1990s Poland, TREASURE follows Ruth (Dunham), an American music journalist, and her father, Edek (Fry), a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor, on a journey to his homeland. While Ruth is eager to make sense of her family's past, Edek embarks on the trip with his own agenda. This emotional, funny culture clash of two New Yorkers exploring post-socialist Poland is a powerful example of how reconnecting with family and the past can be an unexpected treasure. Brian's guest this week is author, comic writer, screenwriter, and blogger Chuck Wendig. Chuck's early career began as a freelance RPG writer for over a decade before he broke into the novel scene with Blackbirds, Blue Blazes, Shotgun Gravy, and the Heartland Trilogy. He was tapped to write the Aftermath Trilogy to kick off the new canon in Disney's Star Wars, bridging the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Chuck is also known for his ranting blog, Terribleminds.Chuck and Brian chat extensively about the internet: the early days, the strange sort of celebrity it spawns, and the way it changes constantly under your feet. They also discuss writing long books and the secrecy behind writing Star Wars. The Aftermath books tell the 'official' story of what happened after Return of the Jedi. And for Book Month 2021, we've invited Mark Mulcaster and Brian Cameron from Fantha Tracks to join Stuart and Craig to take a closer look at the trilogy. From the general story arc and key characters, to the cover designs and the initial reaction of fans and detractors – it's a series of books that divided opinion at the time, but how do they stand up six years and three sequel films later?
This week, Mike tackles the four one-shot Age Of Resistance Villain comics, all set before The Force Awakens, 3 of which feature Kylo Ren! Phasma leads an army in “Fallen Guns”, General Hux & Kylo Ren are stranded together in “Marooned”, Snoke takes Ren to the Dagobah cave in “Fail. Or Kill It” and in “Out Of The Shadow” Kylo Ren faces against a Zillo beast which Vader couldn't defeat. Plus Mike gives additional information about each of the four villains! These stories are all set between 28-34 ABY (before the sequel trilogy). All issues were written by Tom Taylor, with Leonard Kirk as penciller, Cory Hamscher as inker and Guru eFX as colour artist. Phasma was the first villains comic released, in July 2019, with Kylo Ren's being released September 2019, the trade paperback was released December 2019 and the hardcover featuring both heroes & villains was released September 2020. Check out episode 1 of SWCIC for the Rise Of Kylo Ren mini-series and episode 5 for the Captain Phasma mini-series, plus if you want more detailed backstories on Hux & Phasma, check out the book Phasma, or for Hux & his dad Brendol, check the Aftermath Trilogy! If you want to hear about the other Age Of stories (Republic & Rebellion), then check out episodes 2, 26, 31, 35, 39, 43 & 47 of SWCIC! The last week on SWCIC, episode 51, Mike tackled the next volume of Doctor Aphra comics; The Catastrophe Con! This volume of space-craziness includes force-sensitive fungus, creatures who can read & erase minds, shapeshifters, a jail held together by ropes & an internal tractor beam, lovers lost, revenge, betrayal & more of what you'd expect from an Aphra comic! Mike also briefly talks about the “cantina band” Figrin D'an & The Modal Nodes! Our last summary of the major takeaways from Star Wars: Last Shot concludes with the high points from the "Now" timeframe of the novel, more than two years after the events of the Aftermath Trilogy. This includes Ben Solo nearly getting killed by a culinary droid (really), and Han and Lando making some very adult strides in their most intimate relationships. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Well, join Becca and Devon on this next episode and find out. So grab your favorite beverage and get ready to fulfill your destiny! Snoke, the man behind the curtain. The Hologram. Who is he? He's a mystery, an enigma. And he prides himself on being Kylo Ren's sculptor. Snoke is indeed powerful. So powerful in the dark side of the Force that he managed to seduce the heir to the Jedi, Ben Solo, now known as Kylo Ren into leaving his Jedi path behind and becoming his apprentice. But why Ben, Leia's son? What is it that Snoke knows? And, how well does he know the Skywalker legacy? The Force is strong in their family, each of them has equal potential for good or evil. But how did he know this? Who was he before he took on the alias of Snoke? Is it even an alias? Leia knew that Snoke could have a strong influence on her son, and so, it was her responsibility to keep Ben away from the darkness. Unfortunately, the shadow doused the light and Ben became Kylo Ren. Kanata's Castle #18: Snoke: "Fulfill Your Destiny!" Would you recast her? Give Leia an off-screen death? Maybe just somehow write her out of the script? Maybe even use CGI? I personally think they should put a death scene near the start of the movie, maybe with her ship being destroyed, with most shots of her being from behind, as well as using old footage, CGI, etc to create somewhat of a story arc with the First Order killing the leader of the Resistance.
