We're very fortunate to have so many legends in the FRD Brotherhood, and today's guest, Dr. Kelly Flanagan, is definitely one of them. Kelly is a psychologist, consultant, speaker, and author of several books that profoundly transformed my views on marriage, family, relationships, and friendship. In our conversation, we talked about how easy it is for couples to get triggered by seemingly minor things. Even after decades of expertise in understanding the human psyche, he still deals with this in his relationship. You'll hear how he's become aware of when his heart is closing and how the key to managing marital conflict is to keep your heart open. You'll also hear what Dr. Kelly is doing with his Humaning Substack and how you can join 14,000 other subscribers. He's using his platform to share inspiring stories of how we can improve our reaction to stress and crisis by not fighting against the current but instead being present enough to find the updraft as an easier way to reach our destination. One last thing, if you appreciate this episode, I'm offering to send you a copy of any of Dr. Kelly's books. He has gained recognition in the jazz community, having won special prizes at several international jazz competitions. He has performed at prestigious jazz festivals and has toured internationally. Joray grew up in a musical family and began his formal training on the classical guitar, before discovering jazz and switching to the electric guitar. Starting out he focused on jazz standards and was influenced by guitarists such as Wes Montgomery. Later, his studies with renowned jazz guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel at Jazzcampus Basel broadened his musical horizons, inspiring him to compose his own music. Joray's latest album, „Updraft", embraces both the openness of European as well as the rootedness and swing of American jazz. His music is characterized by intricate harmonies, melodic sensitivity, and virtuosic improvisation. Joray is currently immersed in the New York City jazz scene and is continually developing his style by experimenting with extended techniques like quarter tones (also called microtones) and „tapping” (which was popularized by Eddie Van Halen) which are not traditionally associated with jazz guitar playing.

More unhealthy air in southern, central Minnesota as wildfire smoke continues

Updated: 2 p.m.Canadian wildfire smoke has blown into central and southern Minnesota, which is under an air quality alert through Wednesday night. The state has now surpassed its average air quality alert count ten times over. The average number of air quality alerts in a year is two or three. This week marks 23. The previous record was 21 alerts issued in 2021.Where is the worst air?Wednesday's air quality alert comes from smoke from wildfires in Ontario and Quebec, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says. The alert includes the Twin Cities metro, Albert Lea, Marshall, Worthington, Rochester, Hinckley, Winona, Mankato and the tribal nations of Upper Sioux, Prairie Island and Mille Lacs. The alert area no longer includes northeast Minnesota.Fine particle levels are expected to reach unhealthy levels in the metro, Albert Lea, Rochester, Winona, Mankato, Marshall, Worthington and the tribal nations of Upper Sioux and Prairie Island. The MPCA says everyone in those areas should “limit prolonged or heavy exertion and time spent outdoors.” Areas with air quality levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups include Brainerd, Hinckley, Alexandria and the tribal nation of Mille Lacs. Sensitive groups should limit outdoors and exercise time, the MPCA says.View an interactive map of air quality on the MPCA's website.A cold front is expected to move across the state Wednesday afternoon and bring cleaner air from the west by midnight. Is this our new normal?Fire seasons are becoming more severe, longer and more frequent because of climate change, which is also causing more extreme weather.Minnesota is getting wetter with time, but the state has seen record wet years in 2016 and 2019 followed by a few years of drought.Canada is facing the same; droughts, extreme cold and wet periods have frequented the country. The state will likely see more frequent periods of worsened air quality in the coming years, depending on weather patterns like flooding and wet periods.Air quality index in Minnesotahttps://www.mprnews.org/wildfiresBehind the Canadian wildfiresFires in western Canada started this spring. Since then, hot and dry conditions started fires in eastern Canada that are still going strong — that's where smoke has been coming from these past few weeks. Those eastern fires are currently affecting areas beyond Minnesota: Haze has settled over most of the Great Lakes region, while unhealthy air has moved as far south as Kentucky and Missouri.Rain plays a role in air quality, both for better and worse.Precipitation earlier in June pushed wildfire smoke down to the surface and worsened the air quality. But a significant amount of heavy rain — like showers and thunderstorms expected Wednesday across parts of Minnesota — can clear up fine particulates and alleviate air quality concerns.People can make their own indoor air filters by attaching furnace filters to the backs of box fans. Wildfire smoke in Minnesota: How to best protect your health and your home Minnesota sets record for most air quality alerts in a season The latest on wildfires in Minnesota Quiet on the severe weather frontApart from Saturday's storms, which accounted for 39 percent of Minnesota's severe weather warnings this season so far, it's been a quiet summer for intense storms. The state is in its least-active severe weather season since 1995. Here we have updraft plus, so you can find a free version of this, and what updraft plus is is basically a plugin that will back up your website now with the free version you can back your website up onto your hosting provider or for with the premium Version you will be able to also send a copy of your backup to any type of online storage that you have. They also have some online storage that you can use for an additional cost. So if you've ever built a website and basically messed something up, and then you went, you know, oh, what am i going to do now? I have no backup of my site and i have just lost. You know one years of work. If that's ever happened to you, you probably have some type of backup set in place that could be your hosting provider. Sometimes they have a backup package that you can purchase or is already free within your service, but with this plugin, it's very very simple. To use you can set it up, so you can have a new copy every single day. You can basically set it up, so you can just copy your database if you want or all your plugins your themes, you know make a complete backup every single day once a week once a month, whatever you want and then like i said you can even pay For that updated or pro version and get that sent to you know your computer um, not necessarily your computer, but any type of online storage which could be Dropbox. I think you can do your google folders um. Was it, though, your one drive, there's multiple different options that you can go ahead and choose from, and it's really easy to set up so from the free version like i said, you only get to copy your website to your own hosting provider. Now, if you want to go ahead and pay for that premium version, which i recommend you do, if you build multiple websites now, what is nice with this premium version? Is you can essentially copy your website and copy it over to a different domain? Name? Very quick and easily all you have to do is upload. This plugin to both sites get the key code from your main site copy it on over. You can go ahead and it will copy all the files and folders and everything over then there's also a button that you can check and it will then transfer over all the files that you have over to your new domain name and there you go. You have a whole website copied over to a different domain name in case you want to use. You know, part of that website again or whatever. The case may be very, very simple to use. Now you have that free version. You have a personal option which is up to two websites and that right now is running at seventy dollars. For the year, you have business up to ten sites for roughly ninety five dollars, all the way up to enterprise, which is 195 right now, and that is for unlimited websites. I think i covered all the features but I'll go through the list here, just to see if i can find anything else, so we have scheduling and then, like i said, we have the updraft fault storage which you can use. So you do get one gigabyte of free storage included and then you can go ahead and purchase more. You have your remote or your remote storage options. You have google drive Dropbox, oh amazon service, rackspace they used to have one or your. Was it your one drive? I'M not sure if they still have that but either way, and then you do have a WordPress network and multi-site options available and you have support so for a very, very cheap price. You can back up all your website or all your websites make sure. If you do make a mistake, you can go ahead and copy that back over. Let's just say you deleted a plugin or the rom plugin. You can go ahead and back that up or restore that if you messed up something on the database and you can't figure it out, all you have to do is hit restore and obviously it will restore from the last place that you saved. It's also really nice. If you need to update a plug-in, if you set it up um in this fashion, when you go ahead and hit update for a plugin, it will ask: do you want to make a copy of the website before you update this plugin, because this plugin, for example, Woocommerce could have a lot of impact on your website if something is incorrect or does not copy over correctly. So that is my plugin for this episode that you guys really need to have. There are many others out there, but this one's really easy to use and very affordable, and i haven't had any problems with it. I've been using it for about five years now, so go ahead and check out updraft plus I'll go ahead and leave a link below. If you guys have any questions, please let me know:

Mat Braddy was the CMO and brand founder of Just Eat during their meteoric rise from a small tech startup to their IPO at ~$2 billion. As their CMO Mat was in charge of creating the brand that changed the face of takeaways as we know it. His background in creative marketing provides fascinating insights into how to build a creative vision that consumers buy into and notice. We talk about his work since with Rock, Pamper, Scissors and his new project to help reduce finance problems from Overdrafts with the company Updraft. With his success from the Just Eat IPO we also dive into topics such as what does a human do when they don't need to work for money at all and existential questions about how to find meaning in your life when it doesn't have meaning. MATS CURRENT PROJECTS His main goal is developing his screen writing and film career. When he isn’t doing that he is mentoring startups that are striving to make a difference in the world. His two biggest projects at the moment: UPDRAFT An innovative solution to help reduce the negative impact of Overdrafts. You can use Updraft to replace your expensive overdraft and chip away at your debt. Updraft predicts your spending and alerts you before you overspend. If your in an overdraft they can replace it with a low cost loan so it’s easier to get out of your overdraft. PATCH PROPERTY Renting has become increasingly difficult. At Patch, their vision is to make life easier for those involved in renting in as many ways as we can. If you're looking to rent they can help you improve your credit score and provide a low cost loan to cover your deposit. The aim is to help you get on the ladder with a flat you want and to make it more affordable. If you're a landlord or agent - changing legislation is making it increasingly difficult and costly to rent out. They work to streamline the tenancy process and cut out unnecessary costs. ABOUT THE HOST My name is Sam Harris. I am a British entrepreneur, investor and explorer. It is really hard to build a brand. To make a campaign that people actually engage with you have to push the boat out and really make people think about what you are telling them and make it something memorable. HAVE A PURPOSE Things get pretty depressing pretty quickly when you don’t have a purpose. It’s really interesting to see what happens in life when you have basically arrived at all the metrics of success one needs to achieve in one life. What the hell do you then go and do? BE NICE Looking after those around you and giving back to people that helped you or people that can learn from you is really important and a crucial way to not get too caught up in all your own problems and be grateful for what you do have. BONUS - BRAND TRUMPS DATA Many marketers obsessively focus on all important metrics to drive success. Of course, success is defined by the metrics you track. However, this can lead to marketing teams ignoring their brand, as it is a hard intangible metric to measure. Mat makes the point that when you make brand your top metric to work towards then all your other metrics will go up anyway. So you should never ignore your brand! BOOKS Get any of the books free on audible (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Free-Trial-Digital-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?tag=samharris48%E2%80%9321) EATING THE BIG FISH BY ADAM MORGAN (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Eating-Big-Fish-Challenger-Compete/dp/B008TT17OM/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=eat+big+fish&qid=1580912250&s=books&sr=1-1) This is all about taking a smaller brand and challenging the big brands in the market and beating them, which is exactly what Just Eat did and thus a perfect book for further reading. SAPIENS BY YUVAL NOAH HARARI (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapiens/dp/B00VXKB596/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=sapiens&qid=1580912228&s=books&sr=1-1) A masterpiece on the evolution and history of the entire human species up to today and why the world is how it is and a beautiful insight into human minds. EP8: Ask Zane - Updating Those Pesky WordPress Plugins

The Tech Savvy Nonprofit

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2019 20:13

In this episode, we're talking with Zane DeVault, lead developer at co-founder of Tiny Blue Sky about updating WordPress plugins. Zane explains why plugins need to be updated regularly on WordPress websites, what to do if something goes wrong during the update, the importance of backing up your website and some overall website maintenance best practices. What is a WordPress plugin? If you currently have a WordPress site, you might know that some of its functionality is made possible by plugins. A plugin is a bit of software that can be added to your site to do a thing that your site couldn't do before. For instance, let's say you want to have an online store but your current site doesn't include ecommerce. A plugin can be added to your site, and voila, you're in business. How to choose a plugin? There are currently 54,737 plugins available to extend your website experience. And that number is growing all the time. So how do you know which one to chose? Zane recommends starting within your current site. On your WordPress Dashboard, hover over Plugins and select Add New. The plugins here have been vetted by WordPress. From there, look for Plugins that have been installed on lots of other sites and check for high ratings. Updating plugins: when, why and how Like most software, plugins require updates from time-to-time to keep them secure and working as they were intended. You should update your plugins—it's a good thing. Before you update, back up your site and your database. Not sure how? Check with your host (Zane recommends WPEngine and Flywheel. At Tiny Blue Sky, we use WPEngine and love that it automatically backs up our site daily). If your host doesn't make backing up easy for you, there are plugins that can help. Zane references Backup Buddy, Updraft, VaultPress and Duplicator. Once your site is backed up, update the plugins and then give your site a quick once over to ensure everything is in working order. If for some reason something isn't working properly, pat yourself on the back for having a back up. Contact your host or developer and ask them to help you restore your site. Zane recommends updating your plugins every week. This ensures you won't miss a security update, unintentionally making your site vulnerable to an attack.  What happens if you don’t update your plugins? There's a chance that nothing will happen. That said, you're also leaving your site open to the possibility of an attack. If you're hacked you're site could go down or become associated spam activity, which will negatively impact your Google search results. Have something to ask Zane? If you have a question for Zane. let us know. We may use it in a future episode of the Tech Savvy Nonprofit Podcast. Send your question to zane@tinybluesky.com.

Ok I know last week we promised a new episode but you're going to have to wait one more week... this week we're playing a rerun of one of our favorite interviews with Mat Braddy, former CMO of Just Eat and current mentor extraordinaire. On this episode we discuss: - Why Mat Braddy ran for office - Eating the Big Fish by Adam Morgan - The importance of bold marketing as a brand competitor - Some marketing tips and tricks (read: how to not waste your whole marketing budget on an ineffective ad) Mat is a pretty funny guy which is why 30% of this episode is Phil laughing, and it's also why Just Eat got to be one of the biggest takeaway brands ever! From ads such as "give hunger the finger" and bold marketing stunts such as kidnapping celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson, Mat Braddy could be described as a marketing genius. My favourite bit of advice in this episode is to consciously try and take in every ad you see on your walk home, and in the morning, ask yourself which ones you remember because those are the ads that made you think.

Fran Wild - author of Updraft, The Jewel and Her Lapidary and more - returns to the Big Chair at the Roundtable to apply her fabulous storytelling mojo towards brainstorming a tale of our our world where ghosts are real and everyone knows it. The tale is offered up by Guest Writer Jen Dawson, a poignant story a "ghost seer" contending with the challenges of her gift, her sexuality, and the perceptions of a culture that continues to struggle with (or against) both. Marie Bilodeau returns as Co-Host and together we work our way through the rich tapestry of characters and story woven by Jen's story, tucking in some threads of Literary Gold along the way.

In a very short amount of time, Fran Wilde has done many marvelous things - including crafting marvelous stories like Updraft and The Jewel and her Lapidary. But she has also explored the realms of technology, explored art and a broad spectrum of diverse disciplines, crafts, and exotic pursuits. These explorations give her a unique perspective, both on the world and the writerly arts. Joined by the fabulous Marie Bilodeau as co-host, we wax rhapsodic with Fran, exploring the value of critiquing both in a writing group and as writer, the way stories start, the merits of curiosity and more. It's a conversation fraught with writerly goodness... click the "PLAY" button and let the fabulousity commence! (and join us on July 19 for Fran's equally awesome Workshop Episode!)

You may have heard the phrase that “X marks the spot”…but that isn’t really true…it’s not an X it’s a Dot. Atoms, pixels, or points…they are the stuff we are made of…dots. After all, a line is just a series of connected dots and if that line is a timeline of history then those dots mark significant points in history that cannot or should not be ignored. We are each given a moment…a dot…The question is…will our moment vanish as time passes? Or would it possible to make that dot of time, multiply again and again and again… in such a way that it is felt all throughout history.
