A riveting exposé of medical debt collection in America -- and the profound financial and physical costs eroding patient trust in medicine For the crime of falling sick without wealth, Americans today face lawsuits, wage garnishment, home foreclosure, and even jail time. Yet who really profits from aggressive medical debt collection? And how does this predatory system affect patients and doctors responsible for their care?  Your Money Or Your Life: Debt Collection in American Medicine (Oxford UP, 2023) reveals how medical debt collection became a multibillion-dollar industry and how everyday Americans are made to pay the price. Emergency physician and historian Luke Messac weaves patient stories into a history of law, finance, and medicine to show how debt and debt collection are destroying the foundational trust between doctors and patients at the heart of American healthcare. The fight to stop aggressive collection tactics has brought together people from all corners of the political spectrum. But if we want to better protect the sick from financial ruin, we have to understand how we got here. With wit and clarity, Your Money or Your Life asks us all to rethink the purpose of our modern healthcare system and consider whom it truly serves. Ben and Ernie tackle the topic of paying off debt, with a different bent than the typical personal finance podcast or blog. Where many sources focus on paying debt off at all costs, using extreme measures or simply throwing every dollar at debt, Ben and Ernie prefer a paydown approach which focuses on your priorities. What is most important in your life? Find a way to continue doing those things, while cutting back on non-essential aspects of your life to free up money for debt pay down.   Often this means deliberately paying off your debt slower than you could with a more extreme approach. And that's OK! Paying off large amounts of debt in a short time makes for great stories, but most of the time it leads to burnout and accumulating more debt. Throwing every dollar at debt can also leave you financially vulnerable, as you have no cash cushion available to handle unexpected expenses.   To that end, Ben and Ernie share their own stories about paying off debt, what they were willing to give up to pay it off faster, and what they were NOT willing to give up. Their stories demonstrate that life can still go on, even when you're paying off debt!   Share your YNAB wins with Ben and Ernie! budgetnerds@ynab.com   Follow Budget Nerds on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuIUGmbCDklkDCDm-cQqv2g

The Aftermath trilogy takes us from the fall of the Galactic Empire to the rise of the terrible New Republic. In book one (Aftermath) we meet a ton of new characters while revisiting a few old friends. And, of course, the controversial Mr. Bones. Make of him what you will. Regardless, most of the first book is set up for book two (Life Debt). Political intrigue and plotting isn't necessarily best presented in Chuck Wendig's very immediate first person style. At least there's some balance with the exciting liberation of Kashyyyk. Sadly, the New Republic doesn't approve, but since they're terrible it's to be expected. The Skywalker saga may be over, but there are enough books to keep Star Wars fans satisfied for years to come. Chad, Ryan, and Beth have started a series to keep you up to date on all the action. Upon relocating to the United States, Myles realized that the ability to migrate from one place to another was a life changing experience teaching him to embrace everything within his grasp. He became involved in the music industry and was able to leverage his computer programming experience to land work in some early startups – one of which became Amgen, the world’s largest biotechnology corporation. Myles is a self-made business owner, who thanks to his wife and her focus on investments in the 1990s, along with the teachings of people like Robert Kiyosaki taught them the power of real estate investing along with other passive income businesses. As such, this means the ability to freely travel and live an unconstrained life. It is a dark time for the Empire. The Emperor is dead, and the remnants of his former Empire are in retreat. As the New Republic fights to restore a lasting peace to the galaxy, some dare to imagine new beginnings and new destinies. For Han Solo, that means settling his last outstanding debt, by helping Chewbacca liberate the Wookiee’s homeworld of Kashyyyk. Meanwhile, Norra Wexley and her band of Imperial hunters pursue Grand Admiral Rae Sloane and the Empire’s remaining leadership across the galaxy. Even as more and more officers are brought to justice, Sloane continues to elude the New Republic, and Norra fears Sloane may be searching for a means to save the crumbling Empire from oblivion. But the hunt for Sloane is cut short when Norra receives an urgent request from Princess Leia Organa. The attempt to liberate Kashyyyk has carried Han Solo, Chewbacca, and a band of smugglers into an ambush—resulting in Chewie’s capture and Han’s disappearance. Breaking away from their official mission and racing toward the Millennium Falcon’s last known location, Norra and her crew prepare for any challenge that stands between them and their missing comrades. But they can’t anticipate the true depth of the danger that awaits them—or the ruthlessness of the enemy drawing them into his crosshairs. The Star Wars fandom received a gift this month in the form of the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer, and we're here with the second episode of Blaster Canon to talk Rogue One and some of the other Star Wars news that came out in the last two weeks.Paul Hermann leads an episode that asks the big questions about Rogue One: Does Gareth Edwards' film "look like Star Wars"? Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso brings a smuggler attitude to the Rebellion - is she more Luke Skywalker or Jack Sparrow? She's one of the few Star Wars heroes of the new era who has a last name - where does she fit in the saga of the Skywalkers? Who are the mysterious Imperial characters? We break down each character in the surprisingly revealing teaser trailer. This week, we also cover the first issue of the Poe Dameron comic book and its place in the new canon: Phil Noto and Charles Soule both bring a lot of experience to the story of Poe's quest to find Lor San Tekka, but did the story start off with a bang or more of a "huh?" Where do the Egg Worshippers fit into the Star Wars canon? We also take a look at the latest excerpt from next book in the Aftermath series, Life Debt, which sends Norra and Snap Wexley on a collision course with Han Solo and promises an adventure on Kashyyyk.Lastly, we take a deep dive into the Star Wars Rebels finale, "Twilight of the Apprentice." Darth Maul and Darth Vader take on the Rebels in an episode set at a Sith temple on Korriban. The episode also develops the relationship between Ezra and Kanan, but perhaps the most talked-about event was conflict between Vader and his former apprentice Ahsoka Tano. We also discussed the tone of the episode and the audience Rebels was intended for - is the show too childish, or does it match the "family-friendly" tone that Star Wars material often aims for? When I say Life Debt, you instantly think of Wookiees, right? Well there's another Life Debt in the Star Wars universe that we all seem to have forgotten... JAR JAR!In this episode we discuss all kinds of Life Debts in Star Wars and even throughout general television and film. We discuss why Chewie and Han should have just been friends, and who we would want to owe us a Life Debt. Fun stuff!Download Episode 27 - Life DebtThe life debt was a social institution found in many honor-bound cultures throughout the galaxy, including the Wookiees, Trandoshans, Gungans, Noghri, Talz, and Srrors'tok. To summarize, if a person's life was saved by another, the saved person was obligated to pledge their life to protecting and looking after their savior, even to the point of sacrificing their own life, if necessary.

Saddi Khali is one of the most cutting edge photographers in the black community. His talents take him traveling all over the USA and across the globe to places like South Africa. His art breaks boundaries while at the same time redefining what we see as self love. His photography makes looking in the mirror a far more pleasurable experience, forcing many of us to love the skin we’re in. Saddi believes: Black people need to see images of themselves with humanity. Women beautiful regardless of size, shape or complexion. Men strong, sensitive and loving. Parents and children caring plus happy. Couples in love in warm intimate moments; as lovers, sensual & sexy but not nasty even when we’re nasty. I DO know how my folks are being fooled and misrepresented in arts/media. I DO know how its affecting us. So, all the work I do is in the intention of combating that. Moikgantsi Kgama is the founder of ImageNation. A former audience development specialist for independent films targeting communities of color, Moikgantsi built a reputation for excellence in her field. She has been credited with the successful launch of Raoul Peck’s independent epic “LUMUMBA” that appeared on HBO and was accepted for Academy Award nomination. Moikgantsi served as publicist for the groundbreaking documentary “LIFE & DEBT,” which appeared on PBS in August 2001, and was the New York City promotions coordinator for the independent film “FOLLOW ME HOME” starring Alfre Woodard and Benjamin Bratt. Moikgantsi also served as a filmmaker coordinator for 1998 The Sundance Film Festival. Her work has enabled her to develop invaluable contacts with numerous independent film establishments such as The Sundance Film Festival, HBO, 40 Acres and A Mule Filmworks, and Urbanworld Film Festival. Moikgantsi was named as one of 25 women who are shaping the world in Essence Magazine.
