Alyson and Breht were invited to join Robbie on the Upstream podcast to talk about Lenin's "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism". Capitalism, imperialism, monopoly—far from being separate concepts that just happen to take shape parallel to one another or to overlap from time to time, these terms all really refer to the exact same overall process. We call it capitalism because it's not always practical to call it “monopoly capitalism in its imperialist stage” or something like that, but really, capitalism is, as we'll see, inevitably monopolistic and imperialist. The process of capitalism's historical evolution from its so-called, and somewhat fabricated stage of free-enterprise to monopoly capitalism, and then further into what we refer to as imperialism, was outlined both theoretically and empirically by Vladamir Lenin well over a century ago in his classic text, Imperialism, The Highest Stage of Capitalism. The connection between monopoly and imperialism might not seem quite straightforward to you at first, and an understanding of imperialism itself as a process grounded in political economy may seem somewhat counterintuitive—especially if you're used to thinking of imperialism and empire in the more popular sense of the words. But that's why we've brought on two guests to walk us through this crucial text and help us make sense of it all. Alyson Escalante and Breht O'Shea are the hosts of Red Menace, a podcast that explains and analyzes revolutionary theory and then applies its lessons to our contemporary conditions, and they're both return guests of the show. In fact, they've been on a number of times to talk about other texts by Lenin but also to explore a wide variety of topics from trans liberation to revolutionary Buddhism. Breht is also the host of the terrific podcasts Revolutionary Left Radio and Shoeless in South Dakota. In this episode, we unpack Lenin's Imperialism, The Highest Stage of Capitalism. This episode is an excellent introduction to the text but it also takes deep dives and gets granular at times, picking apart the nuances and various interpretations of the text. We explore the historical context in which Lenin wrote this book and then trace capitalism's history from its early stages into its monopoly form. We explore how finance capital emerged and became similarly concentrated, how this merging of concentrated finance and industrial capital began to spread out from capitalist countries into the periphery and began to carve up the world, and how this process led to what we now understand to be capitalism's final and highest stage: imperialism. And, of course, we apply the text to a variety of current events and explore how we can apply Lenin's ideas in ways that help us grow and strengthen our socialist movements globally. What Is To Be Done? This is the question so profoundly posed by the Russian Revolutionary and Bolshevik leader, Vladimir Lenin, in his landmark text of the same name. Although it was written well over a century ago, this text, the questions it asked, and the paths forward that it provided, are just as relevant today as they were a hundred years ago. And just as urgent. What roles do spontaneity and disciplined organization have in leftist movements? Can we focus simply on economic reform, or do our actions need a larger political framework to structure, guide, and propel them? Why does it feel like even though so many of us are motivated to work towards structural change, that things continue to get worse? Why does it seem like potential revolutionary struggles in the West always seem to stall and fail to move from a singular moment to a protracted movement? These are old and familiar questions — a lot of ink has been spilled and speeches made exploring them — and in this Conversation, we've brought on two guests who've not only thought about these questions in depth, but who have some pretty compelling answers that draw from revolutionary theory and practice in both their personal lives and from the deep well of wisdom bequeathed by theorists Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Mao. Breht O'Shea is the host of the podcast Revolutionary Left Radio and a co-host of Guerrilla History. He's been on the show multiple times so you may already be familiar with his voice. Alyson Escalate, who has also been on the show, is the co-host, along with Breht, of Red Menace, a podcast that explains and analyzes revolutionary theory and then applies its lessons to our contemporary conditions. Originally aired on Jun 3, 2021 In this classic mini-episode, Alyson Escalante summarizes and analyzes the history of Jewish Anti-Zionism.
In this episode we welcome J. Moufawad-Paul back to the podcast. Previously we had him along with Alyson Escalante and Devin Zane Shaw to talk about On Necrocapitalism a collectively authored book they all worked on together along with some other authors. For today's episode we are focused on J. Moufawad-Paul's latest book Politics In Command: A Taxonomy of Economism. This book seeks to understand what economism is, how it is deployed through socialist analyses, and the ways in which various categories (economy, politics, class, practice, revolution, etc) are mobilized and classified according to its imaginary. Today we talk about a range of topics related to this book, including what economism is, ways it manifests, and related issues like workerism, the concept of the labor aristocracy, and arguments around so-called identity politics. We also get into a little discussion around Marx's model of Capital, what Samir Amin called “actually existing capitalism” vs “imaginary capitalism,” and Cedric Robinson's idea of racial capitalism. And relatedly we talk about why class is not an identity, but rather as Moufawad-Paul puts it “class comes cloaked in the messiness of social relations.” Along the way JMP debunks some conspiratorial understandings of how capitalism works and how the ruling class reproduces itself. And we get into discussion of what Moufawad-Paul argues is the role of the vanguard party as an interventionist party that helps the working class understand itself as a combative class struggling for the overthrow of capitalism, rather than just fighting for immediate material gains in order to defend against the ravages of austerity. As we mention in the show, this book is available through Foreign Languages Press, we will include a link to that in the show notes, as well as to several of Moufawad-Paul's other books, writings and interventions. Happy New Year to those of you who live under a Gregorian calendar. We have a goal for January of adding 31 patrons to keep up with attrition and hopefully continue to build a little bit as well. Currently we are 23 patrons away from that goal. So it's a great time to sign up and support the show if you don't already. [Orignally released Oct 2018] Alyson Escalante joins Breht to discuss Lenin's major work of political theory, State and Revolution. Here is a previous show we here at Rev Left did specifically on the Paris Commune entitled "The Paris Commune: A Brief Blossoming of Proletarian Power", for anyone interested in taking a deeper dive: https://revolutionaryleftradio.libsyn.com/the-paris-commune-a-brief-blossoming-of-proletarian-power Outro: "Police State" by Dead Prez Support Rev Left Radio: https://www.patreon.com/RevLeftRadio
This is part two of our two part episode with three of the contributors to On Necrocapitalism: A Plague Journal, which is available from Kersplebedeb and you can find that at leftwingbooks.net. On Necrocapitalism was collectively authored by a writing group known as M.I. Asma which included J. Moufawad-Paul, Devin Zane Shaw, Mateo Andante, Johannah May Black, Alyson Escalante, and D.W. Fairlane. In this conversation we speak with Alyson Escalante, J. Moufawad Paul and Devin Zane Shaw. In part two we continue our discussion of pacification and capture in response the historic rebellions of 2020 and the related crisis in the ruling class. We also get into some discussion of unequal exchange, the ongoing climate crisis, and settler colonialism as a material relation of capitalism in the US & Canada, rather than just as a moral wrong. Along the way we get into some of the nuanced differences in the racial regimes in the US and Canada. We talk about some events since the Biden election, from liberal pacification, to the declining ranks in movement work, and the ongoing danger posed state support for settler vigilantism among the far right. And we ask the authors if they predicted the weird re-emergence of so-called proletarian patriotism in the imperial core. As we wrap up the end of the year at Millennials Are Killing Capitalism, we just wanted to note that we've put out 48 episodes this year. That's 4 episodes each month. We read all the books, do the research, develop the questions, record, edit and release these ourselves with no ad revenue, no pay per click revenue and no sponsorships, just the support of the many great folks who donate to our patreon. And we're approaching 300,000 downloads for this year alone. So please if you're able to contribute even a small amount to our patreon, it helps us make this show possible and ensures that all our content stays free, even for the folks who can't afford to give anything. In this episode we speak to three of the contributors to On Necrocapitalism: A Plague Journal, which is available from Kersplebedeb and you can find that at leftwingbooks.net. The authors introduce themselves in a little more detail in the episode, but Alyson Escalante you probably know as the co-host of Red Menace Podcast and J. Moufawad Paul and Devin Zane Shaw have both written multiple books. First written in blog form, On Necrocapitalism was written through weekly entries throughout the first year of the pandemic. The authors approached the pandemic as an occasion to think capitalism according to what it always has been, what the pandemic reveals about its current ideological deployment, and how we can think about a communist alternative in the face of exterminism. As we deal with the omicron surge and in the US as we deal with dimensions of capitalism that have only continued to become more necrotic after the pacification of the electoral process. This two part conversation and the book On Necrocapitalism are as timely as ever. Reminding us of the death worlds of the pandemic we're still in, the possibilities of rebellion and the ways in which our uprisings can ultimately be pacified. By the end of the year, we will have put out 49 episodes of Millennials Are Killing Capitalism this year. With all of the planning, outreach, reading, editing, and recording time we put into this it has become a full-time endeavor for us. A reminder that if you enjoy these conversations, and can afford to give even $1 a month towards our patreon, it all adds up and goes a long way towards sustaining the level of output we've been able to maintain this year. In this part we talk about the origin of the On Necrocapitalism project. Discussing the necrosis that is always within capitalism. The bad bourgeois and “left pundit” frames that were trotted out in the beginning of the pandemic. The way the pandemic most impacted groups of people on specific margins of bourgeois society. We touch on the authors' use of proletarian feminism and social reproduction theory. We talk about how the pandemic shifted amid rebellion, talk about the entry of abolitionist demands into the mainstream and begin to discuss the onset of pacification - an issue we will delve into more deeply in part 2. With family abolition a controversial topic in the current-day leftist discourse, Alyson Escalante argues for a more nuanced and sensitive approach to the topic by looking at the works of Karl Marx and Alexandra Kollontai while exploring the relation of colonialism to the family. In this article from Regeneration Magazine, the official outlet for the Marxist Center, Alyson Escalante responds to an article defending the solidarity economy over Marxist revolutionary strategy. In it she clarifies the Marxist conception of revolution, defends Leninism against those who wish to reject it, and shows the inherent weaknesses of utopian schemes dreamed up in armchairs compared to Marxist theory which has been tested in the process of building and defending socialism in the real world. Transcription of the Announcement: As many of you know, The Guillotine is done, canceled. There will never be another Guillotine episode again. We cannot, and will not, keep the show around and merely plug in another co-host, that would be absurd. We had a great run, and we deeply appreciate all the love and support The Guillotine has garnered over its one-year existence. We tried to do something totally new and unapologetically militant, and because of that we gained dedicated listeners as well as a long list of enemies; many of whom we were happy to earn. The point of this announcement, however, is not to reflect on the show nor to reflect on the events that have brought the show to its end. If you are interested in that side of things, I have made public statements on my personal twitter page that you can check out. I've also had long private discussions with family members and close comrades about this issue, as I prefer to deal with these sorts of things privately rather than publicly. Either way, the point of this announcement is to convey as much practical information as I can in as effective and succinct a manner as possible, so here we go: Starting in February 2019, we are launching a brand-new multimedia project under the name “Red Spectre”. It will be hosted by me and Alyson Escalante, a comrade of mine who has appeared on two Rev Left episodes, our Gender Abolition & Michel Foucault episode as well as what I regard to be one of the best episodes of Rev Left to date, our State and Revolution episode. Along with a new name, a new aesthetic, and a new set of hosts, comes a brand new show structure as well. We will release one episode a month, both in audio podcast form as well as in a produced video form on Youtube. Each show will be in two parts: the first part will be Alyson and I working through a theoretical text (much like our State and Rev episode), and the second part will be us applying the lessons from that text to modern political events, global news headlines, popular culture, and contemporary leftist organizing in order to bring the theory to life and use real world examples to explicate the major themes and arguments of whichever work of theory we are tackling that month. Our goal here is twofold: to bring theory and practice together in an illuminating, engaging, and educational way, as well as to break onto the YouTube platform, a platform too often dominated by the right, and make radical leftist politics more accessible to even more people. We will also be offering bonus content on our patreon, but we will get to that in a minute. Now, before I move on, I want to address something that a fraction of you may be bummed about. The Guillotine was a show hosted by two people on the left with radically different tendencies; me on the Marxist, Leninist, and Maoist side, and my co-host on the Insurrectionary, Anarchist, and Egoist side. Many people loved that dynamic, as it de-emphasized sectarianism, promoted dialogue across tendencies, and was welcoming to comrades all across the radical left wing of the political spectrum. However, my comrade and new co-host Alyson is a principled Marxist-Leninist, and our new show will focus on the Marxist tradition heavily as we are both of that tradition and operate within it. I personally feel that this is the right move for me and for what I want to do intellectually and creatively at this juncture in my political development. Now, to be clear, we will also de-emphasize hyper-sectarianism and offer a show that is, in some ways, even more welcoming to new listeners and comrades who are still learning and finding their place on the Left. But we will not have a consistent anarchist voice on this new show. In light of that, I want to offer some recommendations of anarchist podcasts and media outlets from comrades who prefer that tendency to go check out and support. We will list as many of these as possible in the show notes of this episode, and when we post this online, people should feel free to add more anarchist shows in the comment section for those interested. Given this relative absence of Anarchist voices on our new show “Red Spectre”, I will strive to ensure they continue to have a place on Rev Left Radio, where we've already done dozens of shows with anarchists. Moreover, Rev Left has, and will continue to, launch spin off shows on a wide range of topics which are hosted by a wide range of people on the Left. Our weird left spin off show, Black Banner Magic, for example, is hosted by one of the most principled and hardest working anarchists I've ever met and focuses on anarchist politics alongside the occult. Additionally, 2/3rds of all the patreon money for Black Banner Magic goes to fund the Omaha Freedom Fund, which is an anarchist organization that assists prisoners of the state in paying their bail. We are also working on bringing an anarchist journalist comrade of mine onto Rev Left to do correspondent segments covering the elections in 2019, which should be incredibly fun and interesting. Lastly, we encourage people to check out anarchist-led podcasts and outlets like Coffee with Comrades, Its Going Down, Solecast, and The Stimulator. You can also check out the Channel Zero Network for an entire podcast network of anarchist shows if you are interested. This brings us to our next point, which is perhaps the single most important thing to take away from this announcement, so listen up comrades: Instead of simply throwing away The Guillotine's Patreon page, The Guillotine's LibSyn hosting site, and The Guillotine's social media platforms and starting with nothing, we will be taking over that infrastructure, scrubbing it clean, and launching our new show on those platforms. We are giving folks the entire month of January to hear about this plan, and to act according to their own wishes. If you do not want to support our new project on Patreon, we totally understand, we thank you so goddamn much for your support up to this point, and we are giving you a month to retract your patreon subscription and put it elsewhere. HOWEVER, if you are interested in our new project, if you want to be on the ground floor of our Patreon and help give us ideas on what sort of bonus content you would like to see from Alyson and I, if you believe in Dave and I's ability to create exciting new projects from scratch as we've done so many times before, and if you basically just want to support a brand new radical leftist multimedia and multi-platform project while forming personal relationships with Dave, Alyson, and Me, then we encourage you to stick around and launch the Red Spectre WITH US! Additionally, and this is super important as well, since our new show will launch in February and we will not be putting out content for the month of January, we pledge to you, right here and now, that if you stick around through January, NONE of the patreon income for this month will go to Dave and I. Not a goddamn penny. Instead, every cent of our Patreon money for the month of January will be donated to the Nebraska Left Coalition, a political organization that I helped found, a member of the Marxist center, and an organization that, we are proud to say, is majority dominated and led by women and LGBTQ comrades. We at NLC are launching a big anti-gentrification campaign in 2019, as well as smaller projects like building hydroponic gardening systems so people can be food self sufficient through the harsh Nebraskan winter, loaning out money with no interest to low income members of our community, putting together and distributing necessity bags for people without homes in our community, organizing our third annual May Day event, and much more! So, if you stick around through January, 100% of your Patreon donation for that month will go to this organization and will help fund programs which materially help poor and working people. And in February, as I said, Red Spectre will publish our first episode, and all of you who stick around will be there to help steer this new project, give us feedback on what you want to see, and help create the patreon bonus content for the show going forward. To ensure as many patrons as possible hear about this, I will be messaging this announcement to every single member of our Patreon individually, publishing it on The Guillotines RSS feed, and posting it on social media. We are dedicated to being as transparent and open about all of this with our supporters as we possibly can. Before we end, I want to take a brief moment to thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for every single listener and supporter of The Guillotine over the past year. We strove to give as many of you as possible a platform and a voice on the show, and in return you gave us one of the most loyal and loving listenerships of any podcast. We built a diverse and international audience by being unabashedly and unapologetically anti-fascist, anti-imperialist, and anti-capitalist. We had listeners who ranged from teenagers to middle aged, who called in from places like Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, and beyond, and who consistently took up our call to organize in their communities and to rebel against reactionaries on every front. We will never forget that love and solidarity, and we will carry that very same spirit into our next project and into every project we do; and we sincerely hope that many of you will stick around and stand side by side with us as we once again try to elevate class consciousness, offer sharp and principled leftist analysis of current events, bolster and expand the leftist media landscape, and build a community of comrades rooted in compassion, struggle, solidarity, and a militant rejection of every form of domination and oppression that exists on this smoldering planet. With endless appreciation, bottomless love, and infinite solidarity, Goodnight. ----------------- Anarchist shows from Channel Zero Network: IGDCast The IGDCAST is a weekly podcast of It's Going Down which features interviews with participants in social movements, struggles, rebellions, projects, and organizations. The Final Straw Radio The Final Straw Radio is an hour-long radio show that strives to provide information and contribute to awareness of and participation in self-liberatory activities around the world by providing a platform to English-language listeners to learn about current struggles and ideas. Simply stated, we promote non-sectarian Anarchism(s) to enrich the struggle and widen participation in the battles against Capital, State & Coercion. We believe that the liberation of each is tied to the liberation of all, and so we work to cover struggles against Prisons, Police, Sexism, Racism, Hetero-patriarchy and against Civilization. We support autogestion and autonomy. Rustbelt Abolition Radio Rustbelt Abolition Radio is an abolitionist media and movement-building project based in Detroit, MI. Each episode amplifies the voices of those impacted by mass incarceration and explores ongoing work in the movement to abolish the carceral state (that is prisons, police, borders, and surveillance). Let's expand our ability to struggle against the ways in which these forces impact our daily lives and create spaces where we can both imagine and remake our world anew. Resonance: An Anarchist Audio Distro We are recording anarchist and related texts and distributing them in audio form as audiobooks and audiozines. In this way we hope to Make anarchist ideas more accessible, and anarchist practice more informed. We may not agree with every word of every text we record, but we hope that the distribution of these texts in audio form continues lively anarchist discussions — and ultimately we hope that those discussions lead us into the streets. Kite Line A weekly 30-minute radio program and podcast, our goal at Kite Line is to amplify the voices of those inside the prisons while encouraging connection with those on the outside. Part news, part storytelling, and entirely against prisons. Behind the prison walls, a message is called a kite: whispered words, a note passed hand to hand, or a request submitted to the guards for medical care. Illicit or not, sending a kite means trusting that other people will bear it farther along till it reaches its destination.
