This episode is a live public lecture to the New Zealand Fabian Society in Wellington. Our governments are clinging to outdated mental maps of the world—maps that obscure the pain and profit associated with their foreign-policy choices. In this public talk, Dr. Van Jackson diagnoses our moment of global “polycrisis” as a crisis of capitalism anchored to a single declining hegemon. The United States has repudiated its former global role; the world is becoming more multipolar; and prolonged economic stagnation is plaguing the global North and South to varying degrees. These forces are propelling modern national states toward “primitive accumulation”—using state power to hoard both wealth and security at the expense of the working classes. Linking America's permanent war economy to the rentier economies of wealthy nations like New Zealand, Jackson argues that imperialist statecraft is becoming a more common mode of geopolitics—a mode that benefits oligarchs and turns the institutions of “national security” against us all. Refusing this dystopian trajectory means struggling to retain our shared humanity and construct a global order without empire. There's a hidden social hierarchy on the internetSupport my independent journalism:
It's Fun Day Monday on The Majority Report On today's program: Foiled correspondence Assassination plot After the shooting outside the White House Correspondent Dinner, Donald Trump goes on 60 minutes for an interview about the incident. 60 Minutes' Norah O'Donnell reads to the President a brief excerpt from the shooters manifesto that mentions Trump being a rapist and pedophile, Trump responds in the way the guilty people do - by hurling insults. David Griscom, author of The Myth of Red Texas: Cowboys, Populism and Class War in the Radical South joins the program for a conversation about his book. Check out's David's podcast - both of which feature Majority Report's own Matt Lech, The Jacobin Show and Left Reckoning. In the Fun Half: Russell Brand is on a book tour, and it is not going well. Brand flounders on Piers Morgan, failing to find a Bible passage he intends to read on air at Piers' request. In another interview, Megyn Kelly expresses skepticism about the sexual assault allegations against him, saying she believes he is being railroaded by the media. In response to Kelly, Brand goes on to admit things that Kelly was attempting to dismiss. Footage from the White House correspondent dinner incident shows Donald Trump falling, Stephen Miller using his wife as a human shield and RFK, Jr. abandons his wife. Trump spins the shooting into a case for his ballroom and coincidentally a massive amount of right-wing X accounts also tweet demands for a White House ballroom. Ben Stiller's tweet about the Knicks winning gets misinterpreted by right-wingers as a boast about the attempt on Trump's life. At a Substack party over the weekend, Michael Tracey got into a spat with Julie K. Brown. Jim Acosta allegedly stepped in, prompting Tracey to challenge him to a fight outside a Hampton Inn. Filmmaker Robert Cibis of OVALmedia discusses his evolution from an established documentarian to a dissident media figure during the global health crisis. He details how his investigative work into the WHO and private healthcare systems led him to challenge the official narrative on COVID-19, eventually resulting in significant censorship and a shift toward activist filmmaking. Cibis argues that recent global events represent a coup d’etat by financial elites aimed at centralizing power through debt and digital control. He explores the concept of technocracy, suggesting that while technology can be used for surveillance, it also remains a vital tool for emancipatory communication among independent thinkers. He reveals his struggles with subversion in alternative media and highlights the growing divide between government-led propaganda and a rising movement of skeptics seeking to build independent systems outside of state and corporate monopolies. This week on Texas Matters — The story of Texas that we typically hear is one with a conservative bias. But there are parts of Texas history that reflect a more progressive vein of the state's identity. Stories of the fence cutters, the great cowboy strike and the struggle against the power of big business. The new book "The Myth of Red Texas: Cowboys, Populism, and Class War in the Radical South" challenges the common view of Texas history.

Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we're continuing our new “Fast February” series, where we cover the movies that made Vin Diesel a star and taught the world to live their lives one quarter mile at a time, The Fast & Furious franchise! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Bill Mueller discuss 2003's awkward attempt to recapture the magic of the surprisingly successful first movie, 2 Fast 2 Furious! An incredible title! Those silly visor hats! Pepsi and NOS product placement! Trying to pick up girls during a dangerous undercover mission! A Sound Designer-approved audio mix! Loud, somewhat gaudy visuals thanks to that clumsy early thousands aesthetic! A possible influence on the Wachowskis' Speed Racer movie! A larger budget but a less tangible story with somehow even cringier lines! A third act you'll barely remember! The introduction of characters who would go on to be staples of the series! John Singleton trying his hand at directing a silly blockbuster! Race obstacles that would lead to expensive automotive repairs! A great car jump stunt that's wasted due to poor editing and unnecessary visual effects! A cast that includes a returning Paul Walker, James Remar, Eva Mendes, a pre-Yellowstone Cole Hauser, Mark Boone Junior, Devon Aoki, Ludacris, and Tyrese Gibson starting out as somewhat of a Dom Toretto wannabe before finding his character as the movie goes on! The entry of the series with possibly the least sense of "family," you never realized you could miss Vin Diesel so much! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Crime 101, Psycho Killer, and the original Hunger Games quadrilogy! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! Nov 5, 2025 In this episode, public school history teacher Gianni Paul joins Breht to trace the historical roots of our current crisis — stagnant wages, mass homelessness, collapsing infrastructure, rising fascism, Gilded Age inequality, and a beaten down working class — back to Reagan's counter-revolution against the New Deal and the forty-year neoliberal project that followed. Together, they explore how neoliberalism emerged out of the crises of the 1970s, Carter's role in laying the groundwork before Reagan, the destruction of unions and working-class power, the ideological weaponization of anti-communism, the bipartisan consolidation of neoliberalism under Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden, the ways Reagan and Trump represent two phases of the same class project, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rise of capitalist triumphalism, the slow disintegration of America's middle class into debt and precarity, the explosion of homelessness and hopelessness, the erosion of U.S. imperial dominance alongside the emergence of a multipolar world, and why the U.S. repeatedly chooses reaction over social transformation — raising the question of whether genuine change can still emerge from within the imperial core or whether new possibilities are taking shape elsewhere. Understanding this history is key to understanding why everyday life in America feels increasingly unstable, and what futures remain possible beyond neoliberal decay. Episode Summary:In this episode of Explaining History, Nick explores the neglected connection between economic austerity and political repression in the early years of Fascist Italy.Drawing on the groundbreaking work of economist Clara Mattei, we delve into how Mussolini's regime used budget cuts, regressive taxation, and mass layoffs not just to balance the books, but to crush the Italian working class. We examine the "Two Red Years" (Biennio Rosso) that terrified the bourgeoisie and how Fascism was welcomed by liberal elites as a necessary tool to restore order and protect private capital. From the hiking of third-class rail fares to the slashing of veteran benefits, we unpack how economic policy was weaponized to reverse the democratic gains of the post-WWI era. Was austerity the true engine of the Fascist counter-revolution?Key Topics:Austerity as Repression: How economic policy was used to discipline the working class. The Liberal-Fascist Alliance: Why mainstream economists supported Mussolini. The Biennio Rosso: The socialist uprising that terrified Italy's elites. The Motto "Nothing for Nothing": De Stefani's ruthless approach to public spending.Resources:"Austerity and Repressive Politics: Italian Economists and the Early Years of the Fascist Government" by Clara Mattei (Institute of Economics, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna)Explaining History helps you understand the 20th Century through critical conversations and expert interviews. Ai Tsuno presents a guided tour to our album, Class War Zone, which drops on music streaming platforms on December 4th. Class War Zone consists of very recently-penned and tremendously catchy songs about things like the ongoing Starbucks workers strike, the Jeffrey Epstein files, the cost-of-living crisis, the campaign to bring the killers of Hind Rajab and her family to the ICC, and the nonexistent ceasefire in Gaza.
"Forever Shining" In 1976 brothers Tony and Chip Kinman founded the legendary Carlsbad punk band The Dills, who in just four short years crammed their music CV with highlights. Before they disbanded in 1980, The Dils had recorded classics like "Class War" and Mr. Big" opened for the Clash and appeared in Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke. The Kinmans went on to form Rank and File, who are considered by many to be one of the first cowpunk bands around. Rank and FIle's rootsy stomp and melodic muscle powered them through three perfect albums--Sundown, Long Gone Dead and their self-titled 19897 swansong. The Kinmans had an uncanny ability to read the cultural room before anyone else--they were hardcore before it hit the suburbs and they were cowpunk before it was cool and with their next band Blackbird, they were techno metal before Korn and Linkin Park shirts at Hot Topic. The Kinmans went on to play in bands like Cowboy Nation and Ford Madox Ford and sadly, Tony Kinman died in 2018. Which brings us to KInman's self-titled Kinman's new album. A stirring song cycle filled with acoustic numbers, Tex-Mex techno, the undulating rhythms and "Me And Tony" a streetwise tribute to a life in music with his brother, Kinman's new record sounds like nobody else. It's filled with unexpected sonic flourishes, heartfelt emotional ruminations, great storytelling and devastating beauty. It's bold and brilliant work. https://intheredrecords.com/collections/chip-kinman/products/chip-kinman-s-t-lp www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast EMAIL: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)
In this episode, public school history teacher Gianni Paul joins Breht to trace the historical roots of our current crisis — stagnant wages, mass homelessness, collapsing infrastructure, rising fascism, Gilded Age inequality, and a beaten down working class — back to Reagan's counter-revolution against the New Deal and the forty-year neoliberal project that followed. [Bungacast is on holiday, so we're unlocking/re-releasing a July 2021 episode that was previously only available to higher-tier subscribers] We discuss Michael Lind's The New Class War. Lind identifies new lines in the class war, between working class and managerial overclass, between those in the "heartlands" and those in the "hubs". How convincing is this account? What is his critique of technocratic managerialism and its symptom, populism? How convincing - and realistic - is his solution of "democratic pluralism"? And is this only achievable as a result of a new cold war with China?

This week on Men of Steel, Case and Jmike are joined by writer and critic Jesse Fresco to dig into the early 2000s series Cla$$War. We unpack the political fury, superhero deconstruction, and lasting relevance of this overlooked gem from the Bush-era boom in gritty, socially charged comics. #MenOfSteelPod #Cla$$War #RobWilliams #SupermanAdjacent #JesseFresco #ComicsPodcast Support us on Patreon! patreon.com/CertainPOVMedia Men of Steel Full Episode Originally aired: August 15, 2025 Edited by Sophia Ricciardi Scored by Geoff Moonen Certain Point Of View is a podcast network brining you all sorts of nerdy goodness! Learn more on our website: https://www.certainpov.com Join us on Discord: https://discord.gg/wcHHer4 Overview Class War comic serves as a political commentary on post-9/11 America, initially conceived as a 12-issue series but only 6 issues were published between 2002 and 2004. Writer Rob Williams influenced by Bill Hicks and Marvel's Miracle Man, blending humor with serious themes of government superhero programs. Characters feature a Superman-like hero and an Enola Gay team reflecting various archetypes, but backstory is minimal focusing more on action. The commentary emphasizes American superheroes as 'deterrents' entangled in corruption and drug operations rather than showcasing true class conflict. Artwork utilized innovative computer coloring for the early 2000s, with notable scenes praised for their intensity and execution. The series is linked to broader cultural events, including the Patriot Act and militarized entertainment, creating a lasting impact on the genre. Story arcs reveal escalating tensions, ending ambiguously without showing direct conflict or resolution in the finale. Hosts reflect on the comic's themes feeling 'adolescent' today, yet resonate with current events like rising political tensions and violence. Class War recommended alongside classics like The Authority and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, highlighted for its unfinished nature and mystique. The discussion underscores a shift in superhero portrayals, questioning the effectiveness of traditional heroes in the current socio-political landscape. Notes ️ Introduction and Setup (00:00 - 09:36) Discussion of Class War comic as political commentary on post-9/11 America, described as 'what if Superman was pissed off about 9/11'. Jesse Fresco returns after Jaguar Sharks podcast ended in January, currently working on a novel after crossing 200 pages. Class War intended as 12-issue series but only 6 issues published - first 3 in 2002, final 3 in 2004 by Com X publisher. Notable art style change between Trevor Harrison (issues 1-3) and Travel Foreman (issues 4-6), both considered high quality for indie publication. Historical Context and Influences (09:36 - 18:49) Comic written before 9/11 but published after, coincidentally capturing post-9/11 American sentiment perfectly. Received major attention from Wizard magazine and early comic websites despite being small indie publication. Writer Rob Williams heavily influenced by comedian Bill Hicks, directly copying Kennedy assassination joke in comic. Williams cited Marvel Man/Miracle Man as major influence, both featuring government superhero programs with Nazi scientist connections. ️ Character Analysis and Comic Structure (18:49 - 27:56) Superman-type character design with mostly white bodysuit, blue stripe, and star pattern - described as 'patriotic Apollo'. Minimal backstory provided beyond brief flashback showing protagonist's brother died of heroin overdose. Enola Gay superhero team includes The American, Heavyweight (Luke Cage-type), Icon (Wonder Woman analog), and Confusion (psychic character). ️ Political Commentary and Themes (27:56 - 38:02) Reveals American superheroes used as 'deterrents' rather than weapons, involved in drug trafficking operations. Despite title 'Class War,' actual class conflict rarely shown - more focused on government corruption than economic inequality. Problematic portrayal of Black character written by British creators, described as 'Mike Tyson as super soldier'. Art and Production Quality (38:02 - 48:12) Utilized cutting-edge computer coloring and gradients that were revolutionary for early 2000s comics. Heavyweight vs American battle particularly praised, featuring brutal jaw-punching scene later parodied by Garth Ennis. Com X publisher folded after initial run, Image Comics later acquired reprint rights. Cultural Impact and Comparisons (48:12 - 58:18) Frequently compared to Warren Ellis's Authority series despite Williams claiming unfamiliarity. Influenced Garth Ennis's The Boys, Warren Ellis's Black Summer, and Mark Millar's War Heroes. Part of broader cultural shift including 'freedom fries,' Patriot Act, and militarized entertainment. Story Structure Analysis (58:19 - 01:08:43) Issue 1 - Superman burns 'LIAR' into President's forehead; Issue 2 - Heavyweight fight; Issue 3 - Bridge episode; Issues 4-6 - Government conspiracy revelation. Series ends with American and Isaac preparing for civil war, never showing actual conflict or resolution. Heavyweight confirmed killed by shield weapon, Jefferson transforms into monster. ️ Modern Relevance Discussion (01:08:44 - 01:18:51) Comic feels 'adolescent' and 'naive' when read today, but captured appropriate anger for its time. Hosts discuss how recent events (CEO shooting, political tensions) make comic's themes more relevant. Question whether Superman-type heroes work in current political climate versus Punisher-style vigilantes. Conclusion and Recommendations (01:18:52 - 01:25:43) Recommended alongside The Authority, Garth Ennis's 303, and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. Better remembered as unfinished work with mystique than potentially disappointing completion. Plugs for CPOV Media Patreon, Movie Struck podcast, and Discord community.

This week we've got followups with striking grocery workers, beverage distribution workers, tabletop game store employees, teachers, and farmworkers. Our first story returns to one of the more horrific forms of labor in this country, prison slavery, as incarcerated workers in Alabama fight to just have the state follow its own laws. Next, gig workers in India are facing dystopian new conditions of ten minute worker deliveries. Research assistants at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are on the verge of forming one of the largest single campus grad unions in the country. In the response to the LA anti-ICE protests, a large number of Democrats have called for peaceful non-violence in the spirit of MLK Jr. We review the history of the Civil Rights movement and how change actually took place. And we come to the conclusion that today's Democrats are the white moderate that MLK Jr warned us about. This includes progressive darlings Bernie Sanders and AOC, who recently headlined a Fight the Oligarchy tour. What is the Fight the Oligarchy tour actually doing? Why is this event relevant today? Why do we need to break with the Democrats and have class independent leadership? We can't build a serious resistance movement to endless war, climate collapse and capitalist catastrophe within the Democratic Party. Bernie's Fight the Oligarchy tour, which is starting up again, is actually enabling and collaborating with the oligarchy. Bernie used to be much more radical before he allied with the Democratic Party. But today, Bernie Sanders has become the white moderate that MLK Jr. warned us about. Episode 20 of Fragile Juggernaut takes us from 1950 to 1955—the end of the line for the CIO. At the beginning of the story, the expulsion of the left-led unions was a recent wound, and the Cold War liberalism of figures like Walter Reuther seemed like a viable and vital project for the CIO's future, with the landmark 1950 GM contract, the “Treaty of Detroit,” marking a new phase in how industrial unions related to management. The Korean War seemed like a proving ground for this hypothesis, and proved a brutal disappointment. By 1955, the CIO threw in the towel, merging back in to the AFL on the older federation's terms. To tell this story, we talk with guest Toni Gilpin, author of The Long Deep Grudge: A Story of Big Capital, Radical Labor, and Class War in the American Heartland. Toni helps us see this story from the perspective of the UAW's left-wing rival, the Farm Equipment Workers (FE), who resisted the direction charted by Reuther in 1950—as long as they could. And with Toni, we talk about some of the long-term legacies of CIO radicalism for the civil rights movement. This is our last narrative episode. Why Marx was rightHaving fallen out of favour around the turn of the century, Marxism is now back in fashion, often playing the role of an alternative to the increasingly right-wing politics of the modern world. Once the guiding ideology of Korean guerillas and Hampstead screenwriters alike, Marxism is back and taking universities and intellectual circles by storm, capturing the minds of students and teachers alike. Donald Trump's tariff war is usually framed in terms of how it would impact consumers and America's relationship with other countries, but it is also part of a larger project to remake taxation policy. Trump is very explicit that he wants tariffs to replace personal and corporate taxes with tariffs as the main source of revenue. As such, tariffs are a sales tax, of a particularly regressive sort. I talk to Marshall Steinbaum, an economist at the University of Utah, about how tariff's fit in with Trump's larger social vision of a plutocratic society, something that can also be seen in how the White House is cracking down on student debt holders. We take up this and other economic matters, bringing a class analysis to the business news. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The Trump administration is imposing tariffs on a growing list of countries in a desperate effort to find leverage for protecting US interests abroad and to ostensibly re-industrialize the United States. Clearing the FOG speaks with Jon Jeter, author of "Class War in America: How the elites divide the nation by asking are you a worker or are you white?", about the motives behind the trade war and how this may impact both the global and domestic economies. Jeter explains that the United States is entering uncharted territory as it increasingly isolates itself from the rest of the world and hurtles toward another Great Depression. For the first time, the US may experience a situation in which the shelves are empty and families are unable to afford what is left. For more information, visit PopularResistance.org.

At last, Washington is going to eliminate government waste!Trump & Company's budget-whacking crew even brandished a big ol' chainsaw to show us hoi polloi that they're serious. So goodbye to those ridiculous, multibillion-dollar giveaways to politically connected corporate elites, right?Uh… don't get silly. The chainsawers-in-chief are Elon Musk, Trump and a mess of ultra-rich GOP cabinet appointees, and their fortunes are built on fat checks from the government, so they will NOT be targeting any of their boondoggles. Instead, they're aiming at programs offering modest help to middle-class and poor families. For example, the Agriculture Department regularly mails out billions of dollars in “farm subsidies,” but most real farmers don't get a penny, while about 80 percent of the taxpayers' money goes to the richest 10 percent of agribusiness owners, including city-dwelling billionaires and corporate giants. But rather than touching their giveaways, the Ag Department has just made a political show of zeroing-out a very successful farm-to-market program that enables small producers to sell their fresh goods to local school districts and food banks. This is government at its best—serving as a catalyst to “free up the enterprise” of small businesses by allowing them to bypass monopolistic middlemen and provide top-quality fresh foods to their communities.Big Food, however, hates competition. Thus, Brooke Rollins (a corporate-hugging, far-right-wing lawyer who is Trump's new Ag Secretary) summarily cancelled this enterprising local food initiative, announcing on Fox News that it was “nonessential” waste. This is Jim Hightower saying… So there you have their guiding ethic of these “waste warriors.” Programs helping regular Americans are just waste to be eliminated—but giveaways to the rich are “essential” waste to be protected.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. At last, Washington is going to eliminate government waste!
Donald Trump is portrayed as a "populist" committed to average working-class people, but his policies benefit wealthy elites at the expense of everyone else. His administration includes 13 billionaires -- including Elon Musk, the world's richest oligarch -- and he is cutting taxes on the rich and corporations while imposing a consumption tax on the poor through tariffs. Ben Norton explains how Trump is waging a class war. The real “Trump program” is coming into focus as the administration dramatically changes U.S. domestic and foreign policy. It's “Robin Hood in reverse,” take from the poor to give to the rich. Protests have started around the country as the mass firing of public sector workers hits social programs, communities, and families.Brian is joined by Eugene Puryear, an author and political organizer, and co-host of The Freedom Side LIVE, a live video show every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern on BreakThrough News. Please make an urgently-needed contribution to The Socialist Program by joining our Patreon community at patreon.com/thesocialistprogram.
