In this conversation we talk with Garrett Felber about their latest book A Continuous Struggle: The Revolutionary Life of Martin Sostre. In discussing this new political biography, we cover Sostre's ideological and political journey, history as a jailhouse lawyer, his forms of organizing practice, and the ways that people supported his campaign for freedom from political imprisonment. We talk about the influence of Great Depression era Harlem, Black and Puerto Rican Nationalism, Marxism-Leninism, national liberation movements, armed struggle, Women's Liberation, and Anarchism on Sostre's political thought and practice. Although much of what we know about Martin Sostre has to do with political letters and writings during the time of his incarceration, Felber also shares insights that few know about Sostre's life, community organizing, and institution building on the outside. Garrett Felber is an educator, writer, and organizer. They are the author of Those Who Know Don't Say: The Nation of Islam, the Black Freedom Movement, and the Carceral State, and coauthor of The Portable Malcolm X Reader, with Manning Marable. Felber is a cofounder of the abolitionist collective Study and Struggle and is currently building a radical mobile library, the Free Society People's Library, in Portland, Oregon. Yesterday we hosted Garrett Felber along with Russell Shoatz III on a livestream where we talked about some of the resonances between Martin Sostre's life, political thought, and approaches to political prisoner defense work and that of Russell “Maroon” Shoatz and we also discussed CURBfest which is expanding to the West Coast for the first time this year. Tomorrow Thursday the 29th we will host a livestream on Sundiata Jawanza's Freedom Campaign including a quickly approaching parole hearing. We encourage all of you to go to the website and send letters of support for his release. The website says that letters were due on May 19th, but there is still just a little time if you can get a letter in the mail today or at least submit one electronically or contribute to the legal support fund that would be great. There are a number of other initiatives we want to share related to this episode, the campaign to free the Mississippi 5 which Garrett Felber mentions in this episode and the exoneration effort for Martin Sostre and his codefendant who is still with Geraldine (Robinson) Pointer. Links for that are in the show description. If you like the work that we do, please contribute to our patreon or BuyMeACoffee accounts. These episodes each take hours of preparation, recording time, and production time and listeners like you are the only means of support for that work. Over the last month we've seen a 10% decline in recurring support. We know people are under financial strain right now, but if more of you who listen are able to contribute even a dollar a month it helps make this show possible and sustainable. Thank you for your support! Links: Martin Sostre and Geraldine (Robinson) Pointer's names should have been cleared after they were framed. Communist China today has dropped its propaganda stance of being a force for peace and stability. The regime in Beijing has torn off the mask that hid its communist ideology for decades. This episode reveals how the CCP is now turning its power and money into advancing an atheist, millenarian and aggressive radical transformation of the entire world under its official ideology, Marxism-Leninism with Chinese characteristics. The counterproposal section contrasts the dark vision of atheistic communism with a new God-centered view that truthfully explains the world situation and the ultimate course of history as a providence of restoration. The news portion highlights my recent Washington Times Inside the Ring column examining threats of lost American technology research through the use of Chinese supercomputers, confirmation by China's military of Pentagon concerns about PLA hypersonic missiles targeting U.S. aircraft carriers, and China's use of political warfare. The final portion of the podcast includes excerpts of an excellent speech by Sen. Tom Cotton on his recent book “Seven Things You Can't Say About China.”This episode is must listening!

This episode explores how China's supreme leader Xi Jinping revitalized communist ideology. He remains a true believer in its false tenets. The program reveals that a new school of thought among China experts in the West incorrectly argues that Xi is not seeking global domination. These China hands seek to minimize the ideological danger posed by Xi's China. They say his goal in building massive military forces is solely to keep the despised Chinese Communist Party -- and himself -- in power. The latest program explains why this is wrong and further delves into the goals of Xi's Marxism-Leninism with Chinese characteristics for a New Era -- the new era being X's rule over China's 1.4 billion people and the adoption of aggressive Leninist actions to expand the CCP's power in seeking world domination under Chinese communism as a Marxist historical goal. The counterproposal section explains how Marx's atheistic theory of conflict and struggle is wrong. Instead, cooperation is the true path toward solving social problems. The news portion discusses the controversy over a key Pentagon policy position in the new Trump administration, and the interview portion hears congressional testimony from one of the world's top China experts, John Garnaut. Must listening!

The Chinese Communist Party has persisted since seizing power in 1949 because of a fundamental failure on the part of American and international leaders to understand the nature of the communist system it imposed. These include the failure to properly identify its nefarious activities, its strategic goals, and most importantly seeing through its grand deceptions all of which are driven by its ideology – dubbed Marxism-Leninism with Chinese characteristics. This episode explores the heart of the problem -- the failure of national leaders to tell the truth about Chinese communist acts of aggression. There is willful blindness. There is wishful thinking. There is mirror imaging. There is corruption. There are all sorts of business interests that would prefer to try to do harmonious business with the Chinese Communist regime, just the way businesses sought to make money doing business with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and with Nazi Germany before that. The counterproposal section offers a powerful solution to defeating communism ideologically through understanding the nature of God. The news section presents new information about Beijing's strategic deception operations, and the interview portion hears from Miles Yu, a former State Department policymaker and China specialist. This episode is must listening!
The EVILution of Communism Workshop, Session 2 Communism is a religious view that has evolved and adapted over the last two centuries, including right up to the present day. Understanding the developments and threats in our present world requires understanding what Communism really is, especially in its Marxist variants, and how it has developed and changed over the years. In response to this need, James Lindsay of New Discourses held a four-lecture workshop series on the EVILution of Communism in Dallas, Texas, at the start of August 2024. The second and third lectures in this series focus on what might be considered two tracks of twentieth-century Communism, both arising in different contexts, East and West, after the failure of Karl Marx's nineteenth century agitational evangelism. In this second lecture, the Eastern track is the focus, tracing the development of the Soviet Union through Vladimir Lenin's Bolshevik Party as a vanguard. Here, James Lindsay characterizes Eastern Marxism as a broadly state-industrial project, referring to Leninism, Stalinism, and Maoism variously as "Industrial Communism" and "State Communisms" for reasons he lays bare. The general theme is turning the state into an industrial apparatus for the socialist transformation of man himself, in addition to society and nature. In the end, the Eastern model of Marxism (Leninism, Stalinism, general Sovietism, and Maoism) failed everywhere it was attempted, leading to one of the greatest tragedies of human history. The other three lectures in this series can be found here: Session 1: Communism 1.0: Theoretical Communism: https://newdiscourses.com/2024/10/communism-1-0-theoretical-communism/ Session 3: Communism 2.5: Social Communism (Coming soon!) This episode explores in detail one of the most important features of Marxist and communist ideology -- redefining terms. This practice has been a key element in deceiving tens of millions of people into accepting communism's false and quasi-religious beliefs. The counterproposal section presents a key element needed for countering Marxism-Leninism -- understanding the nature of the First Cause of the universe. The news section details how the Chinese Communist Party is using its United Front Work Department to infiltrate and influence state governments. The last portion of the podcast replays an important speech given in 2020 by then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on CCP targeting state governments for influence activities. A must-listening program!
EPISODE 122 | How to Be a Communist One of the many words tossed about these days as a snarl term is “communist”, but do the people using this sobriquet know what that really means? It certainly doesn't mean every leftwing philosophy or ideology. In fact, Communism is a very specific set of applications of very certain ideas, and, like it or not, helped define the 20th century. So let's look at what Communism is and what it isn't, and what other systems and suites of thought have crossover with it. Like all the different flavors of Socialism. Like what we do? In July of 2023, we published a conversation on the Iskra Books translation of Domenico Losurdo's Stalin: History and Critique of a Black Legend with Henry Hakamäki and Salvatore Engel-Di Mauro (book/listen to part 1 here). We found the book really fascinating and had lots of questions, so we were only able to cover about half of our questions in our first conversation. This conversation is essentially the part 2 of that conversation, in which Henry and Salvatore are joined by Iskra editors David Peat and Ben Stankhe. Of course by the time we got around to recording this episode in late October, we were three weeks into Israel's genocidal counterinsurgency campaign against Palestinians, after the heroic uprising known as Al-Aqsa Flood. Obviously, I didn't intend to delay the release of this episode for almost a year, but at the time I kept telling myself there would eventually be a ceasefire and a new normal would be established. One year later that hasn't happened yet, and doesn't necessarily seem and closer than it was a year ago. All that is really by way of an apology to Ben, David, Henry, and Salvatore for not getting this episode out sooner. It absolutely warrants your attention and it actually relates in many ways to not only the struggle of Palestinians today, but to all struggles for national liberation, socialism, and communism. We also just hosted another conversation on Domenico Losurdo's work last week on our YouTube channel. In that one, Gabriel Rockhill discusses the English translation of Losurdo's ‘Western Marxism: How it was Born, How it Died, How it can be Reborn,' which he edited and was just released on Monthly Review Press (book/episode). There are a number of references in the episode which I have tried to link in the show notes. First and foremost head over to Iskra books and check out their catalogue of books. As Henry mentions all of their books are available as free pdfs, but I definitely also encourage you to support their work. They're doing really important stuff, and we plan to highlight more of their work going forward. I've also linked a conversation we had a couple months ago on another Iskra Books release Ruehl Muller's Building a People's Art which is about the role of art and artists in the Vietnamese liberation struggle (book/episode) As Henry and Salvatore mention at the end of the episode, Communism: The Highest Stage of Ecology, which is an agroecological history of the Soviet Union and Cuba, which will be out via Iskra later this year. You can follow all of Iskra's releases on Iskrabooks.org and just a reminder that free PDFs are available for this book and all of their others on their website. We plan to highlight more Iskra Books publications going forward. Including a soon to be scheduled episode on a book they published on Yugoslavian film, and on October 28th at 10 AM EDT we'll host Conor McCabe to discuss The Lost & Early Writings of James Connolly, the Irish revolutionary (book/livestream) And lastly, this is our third audio episode of October, and we are trying to get back to releasing audio content with more regularity. To that end it would be really helpful if some of our listeners who do not yet support the show on patreon, became patrons for as little as $1 a month. The main purpose of becoming a patron is of course to support our work, but we do have a recent patreon-exclusive episode with several folks from Black Liberation Media including Jared Ball from IMIXWHATILIKE, Renee Johnston from Saturday's with Renee, and Geechee Yaw from Earn Your Liberation. And of course among many other things, he is also the co-translator and editor of the book we will be discussing today. You can follow him on Twitter at @huck1995. Salvatore Engel-Di Mauro is Professor at the Geography Department of SUNY New Paltz and is chief editor for the journal Capitalism Nature Socialism. His book Socialist States and the Environment is available from Pluto Press. Ben Stahnke is an educator, organizer, and artist working on the intersection of political ecology, education, and print. Ben holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in environmental studies, a M.A. in political philosophy, and is currently pursuing a second doctorate in education. David Peat serves as an editor and copy-editor for both Iskra Books and Peace, Land, and Bread, is a student of Marxism-Leninism from Lancashire, England, who organises with Red Fightback. He has a B.A. in philosophy and is interested in political economy, ecology, and revolutionary education.

Let's define democratic socialism and contrast it with Marxism-Leninism, state socialism, and social democracy. Let's further discusses the various economic models proposed by democratic socialists, including market socialism, democratic planning, and decentralized planning. We'll also explore the history of democratic socialism, its philosophical underpinnings, and the debate on the compatibility of democracy and socialism.

In this episode we welcome Dani Manibat to the podcast. Dani Manibat is an organizer in the National Democratic Movement in the Philippines and this article was written for the journal Material. Recently we hosted another conversation with J. Moufawad-Paul on Settler Ideology on our YouTube channel. A little bit about Material from their website: “Material's editorial framework is guided by a Maoist perspective, and so, this journal is a platform for contending schools of thought with non-antagonistic contradictions—for revolutionary communist thought: the kind of thinking that agrees capitalism cannot be reformed, that actual revolutionary work is required, and that collaboration with any kind of liberal or conservative thinking is exactly that, collaboration.” Dani's essay, “The Marxist Framework and Attitude on Social Investigation and Class Analysis” is available for free online and I've linked it in the show notes. I have also included a link to Foreign Languages Press, which is a great press for Marxist work, particularly from the Maoist perspective, but also including many classics of Marxism and Marxism-Leninism in their webshop. From the article description: “This essay is an ongoing product of discussions and conferences among Filipino Marxist and national democratic youth organizers as we attempt to deepen our understanding of Social Investigation and Class Analysis (SICA) work. It is in this light that not only is there a necessity to underline the importance of SICA work for the Filipino youth, but also to give some pointers on what to look for, what to watch out for, as well as have theoretical discussions on social classes.” I'll add that this conversation and the essay work well together, you can get more of the theory behind SICA and how one might think about the process perhaps from the essay itself, where as here we have a wider ranging conversation on practice and some examples of how these things might look in the day to day. There is a portion of the conversation where Dani references a graphic, I will note that section when we get there. I have uploaded the video from that section of the interview so people can see the graphic that Dani is describing as he is talking about that. And I will link that in the show notes. During the Cold War it was taken for granted that Soviet foreign policy was driven by the tenets of Marxism-Leninism toward imperial expansion and subversion. Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev, and even Gorbachev were viewed as ideologues bent on leading their Third World clients to resist U.S. hegemony. In this episode, historians Sergey Radchenko and Vladislav Zubok weigh the role of ideology versus other, more "realist" factors, such as the quest for security and the recognition of the legitimacy of the Kremlin's interests. The focus of the discussion is Radchenko's latest book "To Run the World: The Kremlin's Cold War Bid For Global Power." Additional reading: Collapse: The Fall of the Soviet Union by Vladislav Zubok
We welcome Marxist philosopher John McClendon to the show for an in-depth conversation on his philosophical outlook, his work on African American philosophy, and the role of philosophy in Marxist thought and practice. We then discuss McClendon's important book on C.L.R. James's Notes on Dialectics and its implications for Marxist philosophy in our time. If you found this conversation valuable please consider supporting us on a monthly basis at our Patreon.
Chinese supreme leader Xi Jinping, a neo-Maoist orthodox communist, is reviving the false ideological precept that Marxism-Leninism is scientific. Boasting a doctorate in "scientific socialism," Xi is forcing this dogma on the 98 million members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) who are then spreading it worldwide as part of plans for overthrowing the U.S.-led system of democracy and free markets. For the counterproposal section, this episode further expands on what I'm calling the VOC world view that provides a powerful Judeo-Christian system of values and practice in seeking solutions to problems communism will never solve. The news portion is based on a report that explains the Marxist-Leninist underpinnings of CCP expansionism today and its goal of world domination. My interview is with Brad Thayer, co-author of the new book Embracing Communist China: America's Greatest Strategic Failure. Must listening!

The Chinese Communist Party is now publishing its Marxist-Leninist ideological journal online. The latest issue is the focus of this first episode of Season 3 of the Victory Over Communism podcast. The Central Party School journal known as Qiushi -- deceptively translated as "Seeking Truth" in Chinese -- published an article on Chinese diplomacy that reveals Xi Jinping's ambition for a world dominated by Marxism-Leninism with Chinese characteristics. Despite its packaging as somehow Chinese, this is the same old European communist ideology known for producing death and disaster wherever it is imposed. The counterproposal section explains that the ultimate solution to defeating communist ideology is through understanding God and his relationship to people. The news portion hears from a former CCP insider, Cai Xia, who broke with the Chinese communists based on Xi Jinping's attempt to impose communist orthodoxy throughout the nation. My interview for this episode is with Thomas Cromwell, author of the fascinating book The Triumph of Good: Divine Providence, The Cain-Abel Paradigm and the End of Marxism. Must listening!
In this conversation we talk to Zeyad el Nabolsy about two of his recent pieces on Marxism-Leninism in the East African context. One piece is entitled, “Lenin in East Africa: Abdul Rahman Mohamed Babu and Dani Wadada Nabudere” from The Future of Lenin: Power, Politics, and Revolution in the Twenty-First Century and the other is “Questions from the Dar es Salaam Debates” which is in the book Revolutionary Movements in Africa: An Untold Story which was recently released from Pluto Press. Zeyad El Nabolsy is an Assistant Professor at York University, he has written extensively on African philosophy, and we hope to have many more conversations with him in the future. I will note as a caveat again that this is one of the conversations that we recorded prior to October 7th so if it feels like Palestine, or the Congo or Haiti or Sudan or even more discussion on Fanon might be meaningful for us to engage with in this discussion given recent events, there is a reason that we do not and that the context that we do discuss in passing are the anticolonial coup d'etats in West Africa. Zeyad has done some interesting work on Edward Said and some work on western philosophy and Islam so hopefully we can have another conversation with him soon that is able to weave together some more current events with his historical and philosophical research interests. Nonetheless, this is a very interesting discussion and highlights some East African Marxists that we should be more familiar with given the importance of their thought and their political formulations, but who are often not well known outside of circles who are more knowledgeable about African Marxism or African Marxism-Leninism. In this discussion we do talk about East African-Marxism Leninism, Pan Africanism, African Socialism, and the famous Dar Es Salaam Debates. We also talk about Dani Nabudere's work on imperialism, taking Lenin's theory of imperialism and updating and applying it to the African context. There's much more to say, but we'll leave for the conversation itself. As always to support our work become a patron of the show. In fact, characteristics from both the thesis and antithesis are carried forward into the synthesis.Figure 6 - 25:17In materialist dialectics, it is understood that negation is a process of retention: characteristics from both the thesis (initial subject) and antithesis (impacting subject) are retained in the resulting synthesis.Figure 7 - 30:52The metaphysical “line development” model sees an initial form as being “replaced” or entirely negated into a completely distinct entity.Figure 8 - 33:05The “Spiral Development” model of materialist dialectics sees every stage of development as a higher form of the previous stage which carries forward characteristics from previous stages.Figure 9 - 37:30The cyclical pattern of development is an abstract pattern of dialectical change over time.Figure 10 - 38:56In this example, a new car goes through a cyclical pattern of development in which the third form (new steel) possesses characteristics of the first form (a new car).Figure 11 - 39:40The development of class structure is a dialectical process in which different classes synthesize to form the next era of class society. One of the most important VOC podcasts, this episode examines in detail the ideological and strategic characteristics of Chinese communism and how Beijing is seeking nothing less than world domination under Marxism-Leninism with Chinese characteristics. The counterproposal debunks the Marxist myth of humanity as mere animals and highlights the truth of the spiritual nature of men and women. The news section provides an excellent analysis of how China's ruler Xi Jinping is seeking to infuse Confucianism into his brand of communism, a doomed attempt considering Marxism's atheism and hatred of religion. My interview is with Miles Yu, director of the Hudson Institute China Center and the most knowledgable American on the subject of Chinese communist ideology
(Bonus) The Eastern Bloc, also known as the Communist Bloc, the Socialist Bloc, and the Soviet Bloc, was the coalition of communist states of Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America that were aligned with the Soviet Union and existed during the Cold War (1947–1991). These states followed the ideology of Marxism–Leninism, in opposition to the capitalist Western Bloc. The Eastern Bloc was often called the "Second World", whereas the term "First World" referred to the Western Bloc and "Third World" referred to the non-aligned countries that were mainly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America but notably also included former pre-1948 Soviet ally Yugoslavia, which was located in Europe. In Western Europe, the term Eastern Bloc generally referred to the USSR and Central and Eastern European countries in the Comecon (East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania[a]). In Asia, the Eastern Bloc comprised Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Kampuchea, North Korea, South Yemen, Syria and China.[b][c] In the Americas, the countries aligned with the Soviet Union included Cuba from 1961 and for limited periods Nicaragua and Grenada.

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 saw the demise of Soviet communism. Now in 2024, Marxism-Leninism is again on the march as the Chinese Communist Party declares that will impose its brand of communism on the world. This episode looks at the "Sinicization" of communism under Chinese supreme leader Xi Jinping. The counterproposal section debunks historical materialism and offers a God-centered alternative regarding the true march of history. The news section examines the moral destruction caused by Vladimir Lenin who died 100 years ago this month and the lasting impact of his ideology. The last section hears from excerpts of a 2020 speech by then-Attorney General Bill Barr on America's new twilight struggle against Chinese communism. An important episode!

Americans recently got a chance to hear firsthand China's supreme leader Xi Jinping in California who is driving China and its 1.4 people into further despair and tyranny through policies emphasizing a renewal and reimposition of hardline communism. Let's be clear China's economic problems are not derived from Xi the person, or Xi the dictator. The problems in China today are the direct result of Marxism-Leninism with Chinese characteristics for a new era.The counterproposal examines closely the fallacies of Marxism's historical materialism and offers a true version of history as the Providence of Restoration. The news portion explores further the failure of the Biden-Xi summit and the last portion hears from Rep. Mike Gallagher, chairman of the House Select Committee on the CCP. Must listening!

This episode includes new information from the Pentagon's latest annual report on China's military power on Chinese communist ideology and strategy. Based on Marxism-Leninism with Chinese characteristics, the current Chinese Communist Party strategy calls for a deliberate and determined effort to amass, improve, and harness the internal and external elements of national power with the goal of placing Communist China in the “leading position” what Beijing regards as the death struggle between communism and capitalism, led by the U.S. The counterproposal section further explores history not as a march toward the communist workers' paradise but as God's providential history of the restoration. The news portion examines how China may be preparing to exploit the West's attention on wars in Ukraine and Israel for a move against Taiwan. The interview section hears from China expert Bradley Thayer who discusses China's adoption of a non-Chinese ideology -- Marxism-Leninism.

American Marxists abandoned confrontation and violent revolution in the 1970s and shifted their strategy for subversion and revolution to long-term infiltration -- the Long March through the institutions. This episode reveals how today, Marxists are closer to seizing power through deception and cultural control than at any time in U.S. history, a danger that needs to be recognized and countered. The counterproposal section explores how a Judeo-Christian ideology is the key to countering Marxism-Leninism and working toward real-world solutions to society's problems. The news section examines a landmark report on Chinese disinformation and propaganda operations. The interview portion hears from Katherine Gorka, a specialist on American Marxism. This is an episode you will not want to miss!

With Liberty & Justice For All, Session 1 of 3 The Left moves operationally and according to a battle logic known as “dialectical political warfare.” The dialectic is the operating system of the Left, and it works by marrying a truth to a lie. Political warfare is a method of conducting warfare in which political means are used with hostile intent to get an enemy to behave in a desired fashion—propaganda is a great example. Perhaps the greatest dialectical political warfare tactician in human history is the monstrous figure of Mao Zedong, Communist dictator of China until his death in 1976. His tactics and cultural revolution are a testament to the fearsome and destructive power of dialectical political warfare, and they're happening here in America and throughout the West today. Where Mao claimed to be employing “Marxism-Leninism with Chinese characteristics” in China, the “Woke” and environmental “Sustainability” movements we face in the present should be described as “Maoist Marxism with American Characteristics.” In this lecture from Dr. James Lindsay of New Discourses, the parallels between our experience today and the tools utilized in China under Mao will be made so clear that the unavoidable conclusion will be that we are living through nothing less than American Maoism. With Liberty & Justice For All, Session 6 It's crucial to understand that the Left operates strategically, guided by a framework known as "dialectical political warfare." This dialectical approach involves merging truths with falsehoods to advance their agenda. Political warfare, in essence, employs political means with hostile intent to influence an adversary's behavior – propaganda being a prime example. One cannot discuss this without acknowledging the mastermind of dialectical political warfare, Mao Zedong, the Communist leader of China until his passing in 1976. His tactics and the cultural revolution he orchestrated demonstrate the formidable and devastating power of dialectical political warfare, and the concerning reality is that we're witnessing its echoes right here in America and across the Western world today. While Mao claimed to be applying "Marxism-Leninism with Chinese characteristics" in China, the current "Woke" and environmental "Sustainability" movements should be understood as "Maoist Marxism with American Characteristics." In this insightful lecture by Dr. James Lindsay of New Discourses, you'll see the striking parallels between our contemporary experiences and the strategies employed in Mao's China, leaving us with the inescapable conclusion that we are currently navigating nothing less than American Maoism. https://sovereignnations.com Support Sovereign Nations: https://paypal.me/sovnations https://patreon.com/sovnations Follow Sovereign Nations: https://sovereignnations.com/subscribe/ © 2023 Sovereign Nations. On our last show, a couple of weeks ago, we talked about Land Back with David Cobb — specifically, we discussed moving the idea of land back from a metaphor to a reality, by focusing on a specific case in northern California where the city of Eureka actually gave 200 acres of land back to its original stewards, the Wiyot tribe. On today's episode, we're going to continue the conversation, and, in a way, pull back from the specific policy examples of land back and look at it as an idea again, specifically, as a revolutionary ideological framework that exists as a part of Marxist thought, a continuation of Marxism-Leninism — what has been called decolonial Marxism. To do this, we've brought on Lakota activist and political educator Sungmanitu Bluebird. Sungmanitu grew up in both Detroit and on Pine Ridge reservation and is currently based in Michigan's upper peninsula. Sungmanitu's work synthesizes Marxism with Indigenous knowledge and decolonial Marxist theory and practice. They are a former member of the Red Nation, a mutual aid movement builder, and an organizer with the Chunka Luta Network, a project meant to push decolonial Marxism-Leninism as described by the Guyanese Marxist academic, writer, and educator, Walter Rodney. In this episode Pamela and Laurie discuss the Trump indictment, DeSantis, and the conservative “resolution” to the crisis of neoliberalism through the Culture Wars. In our main segment, Platypus members from Vienna, Berlin, Melbourne and Chicago reflect on the Platypus panel, "A Century of Critical Theory: The Legacy of György Lukács,” (April 1st, 2023), the closing plenary of the 15th Platypus International Convention. The centenary marking the publication of his magnum opus, History and Class Consciousness: Studies in Marxist Dialectics (1923), offers the occasion to ask: What is the meaning of Lukács and HCC today? Over the last 100 years, various claims have been made of HCC. On the one hand, it is said to have inaugurated “Western Marxism” and set the foundation for the Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School. On the other, people have accused it of giving philosophical justifications for terroristic or opportunistic tendencies within Marxism–Leninism. We asked our panelists to consider the following: What is the relationship between political practice and theory that Lukács articulated in the revolutionary period of 1919–1925, based on his close reading of Lenin and Luxemburg? What in his critique of reification and defense of Marxist orthodoxy did the later Lukács disavow? What can we make of Lukács's legacy today? How have we received his investigation and elaboration of the problematic of Marxism? What are the essential issues raised for our time? Author of The Final Struggle, Ian Easton, sits down for a long chat with Eryk about the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It's remarkable how close to extinction the CPP came, not once, but thrice. This is a story of spies and counterspies, moles and defectors, violence, treachery and death. Listen to Ian Easton's case on how much we've underestimated the CCP, and how democratic governments, international institutions... and people of all freedom-loving societies, need to "wake up" to the reality of what the CCP is: an authoritarian near-superpower wedded to a fanatic Marxism/Leninism ideology that seeks a new world order, controlled, of course, by a modern emperor in Beijing.

Our discussion on China is far-ranging yet in-depth — we manage to pack in: The two dominant subjects taught at the CCP's Central Party School; Kotkin's assessment of the main threat to Communism — what “Communism with a human face” means, and why Gorbachev's reforms ultimately destroyed Communism in the USSR; Why the CCP fears color revolutions more than, say, NATO expansion — and why Xi snapped on Hong Kong in 2020; The twin components of Marxism-Leninism: anti-capitalism + anti-imperialism; And an understanding of Lenin's “commanding heights,” and what China's commanding heights are today; The case for optimism about US-China relations, despite — or because of — the recent ratcheting up of tensions; Why Kotkin believes a US-China Cold War is both good and necessary; How the US can get on the diplomatic “front foot”; Making sense of Reagan's foreign policy — how he was both a “movement conservative” and a “dealmaking conservative.” Outro music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4GLAKEjU4w.
