"The paradox of the frustrated majority is that the 70% think they're in the minority because the minorities are much louder." - Seth Radwell ------------------------------------------------------------------- In a recent episode of "Joseph Jaffe is Not Famous," I had the pleasure of welcoming back Seth David Radwell, the author of the critically acclaimed book, "American Schism." Seth's return to the show couldn't have been timelier. Our conversation delved deep into the divisions plaguing our nation and explored potential pathways to healing these rifts. Some of the key highlights from this episode include: The importance of using empirical data and facts, rather than emotions, in political decision-making and debates. The need for the "frustrated majority" of citizens to become more engaged and take action, as extremes currently dominate media and politics. The concept of "deep listening" - actively seeking to understand different perspectives through research rather than just paying lip service. The role of compromise in politics and history, as shown by examples like the Constitution and immigration reform efforts. The challenges caused by political polarization and postmodern rejection of objective truth, and the need for unity through open discussion of issues. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are the show notes: Political polarization and the importance of focusing on truth. (0:08) The frustrated majority and the need for action in a polarized world. (9:40) Political polarization and the need for the "frustrated majority" to take action. (14:26) The importance of using empirical data in political decision-making. (21:48) The importance of truth and facts in a postmodern society, with a focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. (29:06) Political polarization and the need for unity. (38:12) Importance of truth and education in democracy. (42:34) Free speech, social media regulation, and the importance of deep listening. (48:12) Political compromise and the importance of listening. (54:53) Compromise and finding common ground in politics. (59:38) ------------------------------------------------------------------- "It's nice to say let's be bipartisan. But we're a partisan nation. Seth David Radwell, author of American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing Our Nation, which won the International Book Award for Best General Nonfiction in 2023, characterizes the forces driving the schisms in our society. With a view of the past and an analysis of what supports a healthy democracy, part of the solution, he contends, is the election system needs structural reform. There is a need for more competitive races and open primaries, focusing on issues, not just the candidates trying to be the most extreme in the primaries. We talk about: Role social media is playing to fuel these divisions Current student protests and protest movements throughout history Disinformation, censorship, revisionism, hate speech Responsibility of the business sector to help heal the divide Building resilience and conducting open, civil conversations Overcoming voter apathy and addressing the frustrated majority How moving forward and holding on to a path creates tension in societies Why he is optimistic for the future of our democracy #FightUnreasonWithReason #AmericanSchismBook #Democracy #Partisanship #Voters #VoterApathy AmericanSchismBook.com
In part 2 of his talk at Living Stones Church in Indiana, Mark Meckler journeys with the audience through American history and examines the reality of ever-present fissures which have become deteriorating cracks in the wake of massive government centralization. But he doesn't stop before he gets to a solution as big as the problem. Equip your fellow citizens in the fight for freedom. More BattleCry

Author Seth David Radwell has a theory about where the great divide in America comes from. It was here at the start. His book American Schism traces those roots to two different views of the Enlightenment, and then follows the course of how we've compromised around -- and fought over -- those differences ever since. He argues that understanding this history, and returning to finding strength in the differences, is the key to finding a path forward as a country.

In our first interview episode, we get the extraordinary opportunity to speak with author Seth Radwell and discuss his Amazon bestselling book American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing Our Nation. We discuss with Seth why he felt compelled to take a hiatus from a very successful career in business and the lessons we can draw from his reading of philosophy and history. We then dive into how those ideas can be applied today to understand our current situation and to correct the current ailments of our broken political system. Seth has recently started a campaign on college campuses to "fight unreason with reason" which you can support or join at https://fuwr.org Buy the book American Schism https://www.amazon.com/American-Schism-Enlightenments-Secret-Healing/dp/1626348618 Follow Seth: Twitter: @SRadwell https://www.linkedin.com/in/sradwell https://www.facebook.com/sethdradwell/ Music: Beauty Flow by Kevin Macleod
Seth David Radwell is the author of the Amazon bestselling book, American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing Our Nation. He discusses his experience as a marketing executive and student of public policy and what concerns him about the strength of our democracy. He shares insights from his research around fighting unreason with reason with a historical view back to the Enlightenment and how those earlier divisions in our history are still part of the US political landscape. We talk about: The conflicting views of the Moderates and the Radicals during Enlightenment that are still influencing the discussions and laws regarding the role of government and the rights of citizens What role do private-sector business leaders have in helping heal the American Schism and how should they decide which public policy issues to confront? How risky is it for them to stay silent? The counter-Enlightenment and the age of Trumpism How technology and digital media has changed the power of the government Whether highly partisan elected officials accurately represent the values of their constituents The impact of the pandemic and war in Ukraine on partisanship in the US What can be done to bring the reasonable exchange of ideas back to political discourse and how we talk to each other #SethDavidRadwell #AmericanSchism #FUWR #FightingUnreasonWithReason FUWR.org AmericanSchismBook.com
You can't talk politics at work. Maybe that is the problem. Seth Radwell the author of American Schism talks about how it might be our job as business owners to have factual political dialogue at work. There are always at least two sides to every story and hearing the facts from the other side can make a big difference. Seth gives us the tools to have a fact-based non-aggressive discourse about topics that affect us as citizens. Check out the findings and more here at https://sethdavidradwell.com/
Are we more divided today than we have ever been and what is the implication for our democratic republic going forward? Well the first part of that question seems rhetorical and to the second part of the question, I would ask, “is there any way possible we can heal the nation and bridge the chasm or should I say schism?” Fortunately for me (and you), I don't have to answer that and I certainly don't have the answers, but perhaps Seth Radwell, author of American Schism does. Two disparate Americas have always coexisted. In this thoroughly researched, engaging and ultimately hopeful story of our nation's divergent roots, Seth David Radwell clearly links the fascinating history of the two American Enlightenments to our raging political division. He also demonstrates that reasoned analysis and historical perspective are the only antidote to irrational political discourse.“Did my vision of America ever exist at all, or was it but a myth?” Searching for a fresh and distinctive perspective on the recent corrosion of our civic life, Radwell's very personal and yet broadly shared question propelled his search back to our nation's founding for a fresh and distinctive perspective on the recent corrosion of our civic life - and led to a surprising discovery. Today's battles reflect the fundamentally divergent visions of our country that emerged at our nation's founding and have been vying for prominence ever since. The founding principles that shaped the United States may be rooted in the Enlightenment era. But the origin of our dual Americas is a product of two distinct Enlightenments - Radical and Moderate.American Schism begins with a quick reintroduction to the pre-Enlightenment Middle Ages and then takes readers on an in-depth journey through the revolutionary Enlightenment period including the eventual schism that began in Europe but then found its way to American shores. Radwell shows the impact of this schism on American history from the early expansion of the U.S. through Jim Crow and The Age of Trumpism. In an optimistic and rigorous final section, Radwell lays out an analysis of our current governmental structure and a plan to move forward, demonstrating that it is only by embracing Enlightenment principles that we can build a civilized, progressive, and tolerant society - where Americans can firmly ground their different views in rationality.HOST: Rob MellonFEATURED BREW: Outta Line West Coast IPA, Rogue Ales, Portland, OregonBOOK: American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing our Nation https://www.amazon.com/American-Schism-Enlightenments-Secret-Healing/dp/1626348618/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1643778919&sr=8-1MUSIC: Bones Forkhttps://bonesfork.com/
THE JIM STROUD SHOW - The American people have become so hyper-polarized that some find it impossible to be friends, date or work with someone of a different political perspective. Is that a good thing? Whatever happened to debating ideas and parting as friends, despite neither party changing their minds? In this episode Jim shares data on why people rarely change their minds, even when presented with new data. Plus, Jim interviews Seth Radwell, author of "American Schism" and discovers that the political divide in America has been round since its founding. Afterwards, Jim chats with "The Bass Sisters" about how politics seems to be replacing religion in our modern day culture. Distraught by his colleagues' reluctance to engage in political discussions and civil debate, Seth set out to examine how we got to where we are today and how the nation's founding principles can be used to save it. He holds a Master's degree in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, which informed his research while writing American Schism. Before writing American Schism, Seth had established himself as an internationally known business executive and thought leader in consumer marketing. He previously served as President of e-Scholastic, the digital arm of the global children's publishing and education company, and as President of Bookspan/Bertelsmann, where he developed book clubs for diverse readership. He also served as CEO of The Proactiv Company, the leading skincare brand for acne; as President & Chief Revenue Officer of Guthy-Renker, the worldwide direct-to-consumer beauty company; and as Senior Vice President, Content for Prodigy Services Company. What I love about Seth is his boldness in taking on this difficult topic. He's really trying to have a conversation about the most divisive political issues of our time and approach it with thought and reason. His goal of getting business leaders to open up about their perspectives and share with their constituents is an admirable attempt to destigmatize this type of conversation. He makes people imagine their family members and kids as part of the conversation to remove the stigma/opposition and have a real conversation about how these topics affect their family. His book is thoroughly researched and draws from many different sources. While it's very academic in scope, American Schism is a great narrative of where we've been and how we can fix our nation.
What are the historical roots of political polarization in America? Why do Americans hold such dissonant perspectives on the meaning of our core ideals? How might we understand our history to create a more perfect future union? Ciaran O'Connor hosts Seth David Radwell, author of American Schism, for a wide-ranging conversation on the political, cultural, and epistemological dimensions of our political divide from the Enlightenment to the present moment. (10/28/21)Two distinct Americas have always coexisted throughout the history of our nation. In his book American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing Our Nation, Seth David Radwell looks at what led us to the raging partisan division we are currently experiencing. From the nation's original sin of slavery through Jim Crow segregation and The Age of Trumpism, join us for a look at the cultural divide that has defined this country and what can be done to stop this vicious cycle of hatred and discord in this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI.
Seth David Radwell, author of American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing Our Nation, is an internationally-known business executive and thought leader in consumer marketing. Earning a Master's degree in Public Policy, from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, Mr. Radwell believes our democracy is in crisis today—and will remain so as long as we allow the extreme ends of the partisan spectrum to dominate our political debate. Instead, Radwell proposes a dialogue between those Americans who make up the exhausted majority, dedicated to a new threefold mission: to educate the public about our country's political history in the hopes of recommitting to our shared democratic values; to re-establish a civil and rational discussion to replace our divisive contemporary political discourse; and, to commence the long process of healing our nation for future generations. In the book, Radwell offers caring Americans from every red and blue state—and those who question the system in which our country is built on—the opportunity to connect our history with the current events that have tested our freedom.Prior to devoting his full-time to writing American Schism, Mr. Radwell served as President of e-Scholastic, the digital arm of the global children's publishing and education conglomerate. In earlier roles he was President, Bookspan/Bertelsmann, where he was responsible for all editorial, marketing, media and digital functions for such iconic brands as Book of the Month Club, Doubleday Book Club, and Literary Guild—transforming the paper-based direct marketing business to multi-channel platforms. Under this sector, Radwell also conceived and developed the Black Expressions, and Mosaico Clubs, dedicated to expanding this retail channel to a diverse readership.Seth David Radwell received a Master's degree in Public Policy, from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. We're talking about Books That Make You Realize There Are Two Americas – And What We Can Do To (Possibly) Bring Them Together We skirt around politics, since it informs so much of the literature we read. The goal of our show is to bring people together, not to divide them. There is enough of that happening now. But then along comes a book, and an author, who aligns with our vision of doing what we can to heal our nation, rather than further separate and fragment it. Seth David Radwell is the author of American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing Our Nation. Our democracy is in crisis, he says, and analyzes our history and present ongoing tensions through the lens of the Radical Enlightenment versus the Moderate Enlightenment, and the way they interact with Counter-Enlightenment attitudes that have festered over the last few hundred years. Despite the dire pronouncements from various pundits, Seth knows from his research that our political divisions are hardly unprecedented…nor are they irreconcilable. Seth David Radwell was puzzled when he noticed his colleagues were increasingly less inclined to discuss topics of national interest. “How are we,” he says, “as a democratic republic, going to forge solutions if we can't even discuss the problem?” Radwell says the way to reignite robust public discussion is to embrace enlightenment values--objectivity, science, and tolerance. Radwell's deeply researched book, “American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing Our Nation,” explores the roots of discord through an analysis of how the moderate and radical strands of enlightenment thought clashed throughout history and into modern times. We hope you enjoy this lively conversation between Radwell and Watching America host, Dr. Alan Campbell. sethdavidradswell.com SETH DAVID RADWELL is an internationally known business executive with a Master's degree in Public Policy from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude from Columbia University. Seth David Radwell, author of "American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing our Nation." Radwell contends that the United States has been a sharply divided nation for most of its history, and the source of that division can be traced back to the Enlightenment.

Today on KPFT 90.1 FM: Rep. Senfronia Thompson, Dean of the Texas House joins us from DC. Seth David Radwell discusses the American Schism and the fraud of Billionaires in space. Representative Senfronia Thompson is the Dean of the Texas House. She is an institution in her own right. And she fled Texas with her cohort to protect every Texan's vote. Representative Senfronia Thompson took some time out of her busy schedule in Washington DC to give us an interview immediately after completing her interview with Rachel Maddow. Rep. Ro Khanna was on point about these billionaire astronauts being parasites to us all. And it is much deeper and exploitative. MSNBC Hallie Jackson spoke to the dissenter from the gullible and programmed euphoria surrounding newly minted billionaire astronaut Jeff Bezos and his Blue Origin team's successful 10-minute roundtrip to space. Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna hit the nail on the head. Seth David Radwell discusses that which ails America as he explains several topics in his book American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing our Nation. The conversation was very enlightening. --- If you like what we do please do the following! Ali Velshi interviews a mayor who knows how to reach people with the Democratic message. Psaki embarrasses Fox News Doocy again. Go hard on the 6th. Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley is a perfect example of one who can spell out the Democratic & Progressive message for all to understand as he hits Republicans as well. I did a double-take as I listened to Ali Velshi interview Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley. You see, he was speaking in such a simple manner that grabbed one into a message that clearly touched every middle-class person interested in politics or agnostic to politics. It seems Peter Doocy never gets enough. Once again, he proved his lack of critical thinking with his vaccine & mask question. Jen Psaki made him pay. Fox News' Peter Doocy once again thought he had a gotcha. Once again, he failed to do his homework. He failed to stay up to speed on the administration's policies on COVID, vaccination and masking. And that made his question that more ignorant. Too often media pundits have undue influence on politicians. They are often wrong. Ali Velshi pointed out that they were wrong on impeachment and with their Jan 6th caution. Today on KPFT 90.1 FM: Rep. Senfronia Thompson, Dean of the Texas House joins us from DC. At this week's Round Table, Inica, Jack, Kenisha, and Madeline spoke with Seth Radwell, author of the recently released American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing our Nation. Seth is an internationally known business executive and leader in consumer marketing--who left it all to start a bottom up movement to, in his own words, “fight unreason with reason”. Seth helped us understand what the American Schism is and where it comes from through his investigative retracing of the roots of division, which is vital to understanding where we are today, how we got here, and what we have to do to heal our seemingly unbridgeable divisions. Indeed, rifts aren't uncommon in our history--our founders themselves had very different views of what the world should be; what's different today is the level of rancor and the dismissal of objective truth. Seth traces two long standing orientations, moderate and radical--and the tensions between them--through six different periods up through today in order to distill core questions necessary to save democracy. Seth reminds us that democracy is a hard system of government. It requires an educated populace and educated points of views. If we reject objective truth, it can't be sustained. We so appreciate listeners like you who are committed to truth, justice, and democracy. Thank you for listening! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nextgenpolitics/message
