I've gone down a huge rabbit hole with this lately for a few reasons (and I'll go into a little more detail with each): First, I needed to do it with a few things in my personal life because they were sending me sideways Second, this is probably one of the things I've been most focused on with my coach as I get ready to launch my community Lastly, my mentor has been helping me with this a LOT lately… we did some amazing work last year which has all led to this You hear over and over again in the entrepreneurial space that your mindset is everything. And it is… you just need to know how to get there. I first got into self-help and listening to things when I was the ripe old age of 22. I purchased Tony Robbins Personal Power and progressed through pretty much anything I could get my hands on at the time (keep in mind these were cassette tapes, all pre-podcast and digital downloads of anything). I was working in a bookstore at the time and we sold audiobooks, so I'd splurge every now and then on a new book on tape. Because I purchased Personal Power I also would get the “Guthy Renker” and “Nightingale-Conant” catalogs (yes, a paper catalog in the mail). At that time I'd say 99% of what I listened to were male authors (something I never really thought about at the time). Most of what I was listening to was about goal setting, motivation, sales, and productivity. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 5 We'll have another episode out on October 16th and will be off the 23rd. Thank you to all our new and old subscribers! I watched Squid Game and loved it. Chandra has been watching Billions, which just ended season five. Royals: Minutes 5:00 to 20:30 It felt kind of flat in royals news this week since Harry and Meghan's tour, but we got a lot of stories nitpicking them as usual. The Daily Mail speculated that Meghan must be doing a beauty line since Harry and Meghan took a private plane to New York owned by the infomercial company Guthy-Renker. Chandra assumed that they just rented the plane but it turns out that Harry and Meghan know the head of the company, Bill Guthy, and that they possibly did the Oprah interview on his estate. If Meghan started a beauty line we would definitely buy her stuff. There's also speculation that they could move to New York. I play a segment from Zoom where Karen, Courtney and Lisa talk about this, including Dan Wootton's column claiming Harry needs to resign from Netflix due to the Diana musical. The Cambridges likely asked The Sun to delete the photo of them out at lunch that came out on the Sunday after the Sussexes NY Tour. The Sun seemed to have their permission to post it along with a sugary writeup but the photos were deleted with no fanfare a couple of days later. The story remained available at The Sun. Chandra thinks the Cambridges hated being called out for it and that's why they wanted the photos taken down. There have been all these weird embiggening pieces about the Cambridges claiming that they're down to earth and that they still hang out with their school friends. Battle of Brothers author, Robert Lacey, claimed that William had “broken the cycle” of marital problems in the royal family by sticking with Kate essentially. This reminds me of Dan Wootton's quote that Kate and William would stay together as long “as they're both alive.” Lacey made it sound like the Cambridges are just staying together for the kids. Kate went to University College London's Centre for Longitudinal Studies, which has done research on child development for decades. Kate has the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood which she announced in mid June, but we didn't hear much about it afterwards. After her visit to University College London, there was a piece in People Magazine that made it sound like Kate was responsible for the research from the university. Everything is centered around Kate instead of the research and children. Katie Couric: Minutes 20:30 to 27:15 We've heard excerpts from Katie Couric's upcoming memoir, Going There, and she sounds like a terrible person. In the first excerpt we heard that Katie refused to mentor other women because she saw them as competition. She also said that Ashleigh Banfield was the next big thing and that she didn't mentor her on purpose. Ashleigh, who works at News Nation now, responded to that and said she was hurt by it. She later realized that Katie likely sabotaged her career. In other excerpts Katie is sympathetic to Matt Lauer. She also made her nanny out to be awful and claimed the nanny was trying to ruin her marriage to Jay Monahan, who passed away in 1998. In response the nanny talked to The Daily Mail and detailed what a piece of work Katie was. Comments: Minutes 27:15 to end Chandra's comment of the week is by Amy Bee on the post about how Kate was “supporting research.” My comment of the week is from Bookie on the post where Meghan Trainor said she had toilets installed side by side so she could pee next to her husband. There is now a shift into the business realm as companies are beginning to see how they can benefit from an online marketplace for their customers: distributors, wholesalers, and suppliers and how companies can find new outlets for their products or services in untapped markets around the world. They may or may not have a massive budget, but it doesn't really matter to us, it's more on the growth mindset. We love working with companies who are breaking out from that corporate mentality; like people getting caught up with PowerPoint presentations or stuff like that. We really want to move really fast; we want to help companies scale very quickly. 2:45Problem Shawn helps solve: It's really scale; it's scale to paid acquisition. And then put some growth stuff on the side but it's how we get a really scaleable, predictable channel of marketing for us. Either it's Facebook ads, google ads, Pinterest, Tiktok, emails.. like how we can have a solid strategy that's scaleable, predictable, and repeatable. Because I think a lot of people goes "hey, let's send a lot of emails out.. hey, let's post on social media" these are not scalable, not predictable. We want channels that are very straightforward and can live on with the business. 3:41Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Shawn: Number one, if you are already trying these things or you are already in some of these platforms and you feel like you are unsuccessful or you are not growing enough or you are not moving fast enough. I think speed matters a lot in anything when it comes to marketing. Number two, if you are in some other channels and you feel like "hey, we're not growing fast enough" or "hey, is my business from a marketing perspective isn't predictable?" I think those are some really good things as well. We also have some companies who wants to hit a certain milestone or they are trying to raise funding or whatever the case is, and they need to have the marketing going to show investors that "we are hitting what we need to hit" and that's really predictable. Basically, there's a fire that we can throw gasoline on to continue it to grow and grow. 4:44What are some of the common mistakes that folks make before finding Shawn and his solution: First thing is just working with the wrong people, just not having the right partner. Gina Leibrecht has been working in film since she received her B.A. in Telecommunications and Film from the University of Oregon in 1990. She currently works and resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, working on documentary, commercial, and corporate projects for domestic and international audiences. Gina's most recent films are Art of Courage, Wilder Than Wild: Fire, Forests, and the Future, and Ai Weiwei: Yours Truly. In 1998 she began collaborating with Les Blank on All In This Tea, which she co-produced, co-directed, and edited, and which had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2007, screened in over 40 festivals world wide, and was broadcast on the Sundance Channel. She most recently completed a collaboration with Les Blank called How to Smell a Rose: A Visit with Ricky Leacock in Normandy, which had its North American debut at the 2014 Telluride Film Festival and has gone on to screen in film festivals around the world. Gina is currently collaborating with Harrod Blank on a documentary film about his father, the late Les Blank. Most recently, Gina finished editing on the feature documentary Serenade for Haiti with director Owsley Brown, which had its World Premiere at DOC NYC in 2016. Past documentary highlights include On Wayang: My Life with Shadows, which she Co-produced, Co-directed and edited with ShadowLight Productions; and Homegrown Bounty, which she produced and directed for the KQED series SPARK. Those words, from my guest Clardy Malugen, former CEO of a multimillion dollar company, define why she has switched paths from working with companies like Walt Disney Imagineering and NBC Television and now focuses on helping others heal their lives and bodies. I had the pleasure of being introduced to Clardy by my friend and previous guest on the show, Jackie Lapin. We met over dinner and her insights into some ongoing health issues were nothing sort of miraculous and some issues I had prior to a healing session with her are just gone. During this episode that was done live on the show on June 5, 2018, sorry for the posting delay, Clardy shares tips on how you can begin to release blocks that are preventing you from healing and how you can stay in the light even when everything around you seems to be in the negative. Surprise is the “magic excitement dust” of entertainment - Music “High Time,” Grateful Dead. Circa 1970. Very touching country-rock kind of song about a misunderstanding that ended a relationship, and all the self-doubt that followed. Melancholy. Goes where you wouldn’t expect: surprise. Vs. my rewrite (Corny AF) “You said goodbye and held me tight You know I found it heartwarming Yeah, sure, I’ll miss you tonight But I’ll see you in the morning.” : not that surprising Beatles – used a lot of harmonic surprises, putting in a different chord/progression than would be expected. Lennon/McCartney have more #1 hits in history 100 than anyone else. Period. - Same thing in movies, TV and fiction Car chase – A screenwriter has to review all car chases ever done before to do something different, and unexpected: surprise Ending of a thriller or a mystery – for most people, not what they expected (although very clever people can sometimes figure it out): surprise What about copywriting? We’re not looking to create entertainment the same way a songwriter or a screenwriter is. But on the other hand, we don’t want our copy to be boring. Why surprise works to be entertaining: People have, generally, humdrum lives. Here’s how surprise breaks the “humdrum” cycle: - When surprise is exciting, inspiring, leading to hope: Influx of brain chemicals like dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin – feels good - When surprise is scary, sad, angering: Influx of brain chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol Effective in either case because, people like to be nudged out of their humdrum lives. And as copywriters, we need to stimulate emotion in our prospects in order to make them receptive to taking action – i.e., buying. So how do we use surprise in copywriting? 1) Surprising new offer / headline / product From last episode: Joe Sugarman – laser beam digital watch “Never press another button, day or night, with America’s first digital watch that glows in the dark.” In 1976, this is quite a surprise. Today, it’s no big deal. But we have to look at copy in the perspective on when it was used. 2) Unique verbs – from John Carlton John likes to use colorful verbs. Cram. Stun. Maim. Crush. Coax. He has a rule that is hard to follow but well worth it if you can do it skillfully: Never use the same verb more than once in a piece of copy. One exception: Don’t put in a lot of synonyms for “said.” It doesn’t sound natural or conversational when you say things like, “He elocuted,” or “She intoned.” It sounds contrived. “Said” and “Asked” are usually all you want to use. 3) Imaginative but easy-to-grasp metaphors and comparisons in stories and bullets. Stuff people don’t expect. Exciting, unexpected images – but nothing too hard to grasp. Smooth as a northern lake on a windless day As excited as a chipmunk who’s just broken into the almond processing plant Making more money than the pharmacist who’s running a meth lab on the side. 4) Surprising pricing / terms. Gary Halbert story – Guthy-Renker – don’t pay for 30 days – tripled response. 5) Surprising bonus! My friend Doberman Dan is really good at this. When you join his membership group, he sends a special gold-colored coin with a custom insignia on it. Recently he sent out a USB thumb drive in the shape of a knight, complete with sword! In 1989, I found myself sitting devastated on a park bench in MacArthur Park, Los Angeles. 18 months before, I had started a brand new frozen yogurt shop and bakery. That day, I had watched an auctioneer sell my equipment for cents on the dollar. On my way home, I stopped in MacArthur Park and sat on that fateful bench where, to my surprise, I learned everything I needed to know about selling, persuasion, marketing, and influencing others. While sitting on that bench, I saw an old woman buy birdseed and walk toward the pigeons holding it in the palm of her hand. What do you think the pigeons did? They walked away! They didn't walk toward her until she started walking away from them. She repeated this dance, and I noticed the pigeons got closer and closer every time. Finally, she knelt, and a pigeon plucked birdseed from the palm of her hand. Soon, there were pigeons everywhere, eating what she was offering. Next, a young boy wanted to achieve the same results as the woman had. He bought birdseed, held it in his hand, and ran at the pigeons. Of course, they flew away. He threw the birdseed at them in frustration, and left. This is exactly how sales works. For the old woman, making the first “sale” was the hardest. After that, the second, third, fifth, and twentieth pigeons were easy! The dance, too, is important; you need to establish trust first. This is where the young boy failed. A few years later, I was I was working for Guthy-Renker in the infomercial and direct sales spot TV business. I had a theory that if something worked on television, it might sell even better on one of the home shopping networks like QVC, so I flew to QVC and made a presentation for a VHS video by Ray Stevens. QVC accepted the offer of putting him on the station. During that QVC presentation, the product sold out. More importantly, I was able to use the experience to glean valuable information on why we weren't having any luck making sales in big cities on the coasts. You can do the same thing online, and increase sales while saving yourself embarrassment. If you find that saying a certain thing leads to sales, keep saying that thing. The second sale is faster and easier, because you have a relationship. And, for you, he reveals the biggest subscription mistakes to avoid, how to deliver value subscribers will eagerly pay to receive, and the single most effective strategy in jump-starting membership growth after it has plateaued. How would you like to sit down with a subscription marketing master to learn how to grow your recurring revenue? Well, today is your lucky day. Are You Making Any of These Common Subscription Mistakes?1. Choosing the wrong product Too many subscription businesses are starting up with great enthusiasm and fading away faster than they started. To secure a good start, one of the first things to do is study the market. Find an area in the market, a niche, that has isn’t currently being served. 2. Failing to secure enough funds on the front-end Even though the wonderful byproduct of the subscription model is recurring revenue, you need to have a source of funds to get things started. You will have testing and development costs, shipping costs, marketing costs, etc. that will start before your first month of recurring revenue comes in. “The most important thing to understand is, it needs money, it needs upfront investment, it needs careful planning,” advises Georg. 3. Investing funds in incorrect proportion for growth You need to be liberal with your media promotions and conservative with inventory orders. With all of the digital marketing opportunities available today, you should be experimenting with as many as possible to see what works best for your target audience – interactive websites, social media, blogging, videos, and influencer marketing are just a few of the many resources available. Georg shares, “One of the mistakes I see is that people don't plan for any media spending. They have a lot of passion around the product, they just want to start it, but then they have not enough money to promote it. That's a mistake.” And for inventory, Georg advises against getting carried away. “People say, ‘No, I'll have 100,000 members immediately,’ and then they buy inventory like crazy, and they sit with a pile of stuff they can never sell, which is a sad story. I would always encourage people to be conservative in the beginning, rather work with scarcity and build up slowly. Conserve your capital. Be very cognizant of capital and spend it in media, and try all kind of channels you can try.” 4. Letting your emotions override your planning Too many subscriptions are starting with high enthusiasm and no plans for maintaining that enthusiasm long term. Georg suggests, “If you start a subscription you've got to think ahead down the line, what are you going to do in three, four, five, six months? Because there will people, if you do that well, stay with you for a long time. You have to always give them something interesting, original, value, but the main thing is it has to be interesting. What if you have some copy and you'd like it to convert better? In this episode, David shares some closely-guarded secrets on how the pro's do that. Let's say I could show you a very special slot machine. This one only takes quarters. Every time you put four quarters in, you get five quarters back. Pretty soon, those extra quarters start to add up. Wouldn't you want to play a machine like that all day? Or play two at a time? Or play 10 at a time? Or 100? That's what a good piece of copy does. After the copy is written, you spend, let's say, $1.00 in marketing, and you get $1.25 back in profits. For every letter you mail out. Or every ad dollar you spend. Twenty-five percent ROI. Nice return on your investment. But suppose the slot machine changed. Suppose it started only giving back three quarters for every four quarters you put in. What would you do? Or, suppose instead of getting five quarters back, you wanted to get six back? Or seven? What would you do then? In both cases – turning three quarter back into five quarters, or turning five quarters to six or seven – the solution is the same: Improving the performance of a piece of copy. In this episode, I'll share some little-known secrets for getting more money in for the same money you put out. But first, listen to this: Copy is powerful. You're responsible for how you use what you hear on this podcast. Most of the time, common sense is all you need. But if you make extreme claims… and/or if you're writing copy for offers in highly regulated industries like health, finance, and business opportunity… you may want to get a legal review after you write and before you start using your copy. My larger clients do this all the time. Now … how do you fix a piece of copy that's not performing well enough, and how do you improve copy that's profitable, to make it more profitable? There are three time-tested, proven ways to do that. Adjust… Headline, Offer, Pricing. We'll go over several ways to fix each one. When you get them right, they work like gangbusters. 1. Headline You have your greatest leverage with a headline. Ted Nicholas – reported 17x improvement in response by changing a headline. Don't know which one. Radio show "The only way left for the little guy to get rich." Board lit up. He knew he had a winner. Key is to pay attention and constantly be on the lookout for words, phrases and ideas that get people interested and motivated. I critique 2-4 pieces of copy every week, and the biggest problems I see over and over have to do with weak headlines. The way weak headlines can be fixed will also work to improve performance of copy that's already working, but could work better. FIRST PROBLEM: Giant claims which are not believable and not even relevant to what the marketer is offering prospects Fix: make it believable and relevant to your solution The problem comes when the copywriter does not take the time or do the work to discover what the prospect believes to begin with, and then to figure out what the prospect wants or would like, but is possible… that the prospect believes could be possible. Do that and it becomes a lot easier, and your chance of improving your copy goes way, way up. And if you've got a piece that's working, look at how you can tidy up anything that might make it more believable and more relevant. SECOND PROBLEM: Headline does not even remotely have anything to do with "the conversation going on in the prospect's mind" Fix: tune into the conversation already going on in the prospect's mind, and join it Way too often, people depend on their own imagination by itself, or their own life experience, and make this huge leap to the idea that they have discovered or come up with something other people want to buy. People buy based on what they want and they need, not what you pretend that you know they want or need, or, even worse, what you think they should want or need, but in reality, they don't. Again, this gets back to that one piece of research that too many people haven't done: Who's their prospect, and what's on this person's mind? Now, if you've got a piece that's working, your situation might be a little different. Your headline might miss the conversation going on in your prospect's mind by an inch rather than by a mile, that's a great opportunity to fine-tune and zero-in. Get it exactly right and your response will soar up into the stratosphere. THIRD PROBLEM: Headline is more of a description than a meaningful promise to the prospect. Fix: turn headline into an intriguing promise, that relates to a big problem your prospect has and is aware of, and that you can solve Gene Schwartz in Breakthrough Advertising says it in Chapter 1 of Breakthrough Advertising. You can't put your product in the headline. You have to put something captivating about your product's performance in the headline. Example: Fan – blade / cool breeze Performance is a benefit. A good benefit can also make a good promise, and really pump up your response. The better the benefit, the better the response. FOURTH: Headline is long and rambling when it could be a lot tighter, punchier, and more effective; fix: tighten it up and make it punchier A lot of people look at long headlines and figure you can throw anything up there as long as you fill it with hype and emotion. Actually, that's not true at all. In a headline, every word has to earn its place. You know who I heard that first from? The guy who writes long headlines everyone tries to imitate. John Carlton. Who we had on the show a few episodes ago. But it's almost impossible for most people to imitate Carlton. For one thing, every headline he writes is very customized to a specific situation. For another, if you look at his headlines, you can't take out a word to make it better. Even though it's hard to tell until you really examine his headlines, every word is honed and every headline is as tight, muscular and efficient as can be. Example from a Carlton letter: Why Does This Man Have One Of The Most Dazzling Records On Wall Street? Mysterious Arizona "Human Computer" Humiliates Wall Street "Experts" For 21st Consecutive Year! You can't make it any shorter and I defy you to make it any better! Other ways to boost response Offer: FIRST PROBLEM: No imagination in presenting the offer. No excitement, no romance, no sense of possibilities. Fix: Put more emotion, creativity, context into your offer. Talk about how the prospect's life will be different and better once they have and are using your product. SECOND PROBLEM: The offer's not clear. You don't know what you get. Fix: Rewrite your offer until it's crystal clear THIRD PROBLEM: The offer doesn't highlight attractive differences well enough. Fix: Do more competitive research. Put together a chart if necessary. Point out clearly and vividly why your offer is better. Price: FIRST PROBLEM: Price is too high or too low. Do price testing. A/B splits till you find the most profitable price point. Title searches. *What is the impact of sales on your life?* Taught him the importance of service. It's more than customer service. The attitude of giving. It's hard to train people on that. He's a firstborn and wasn't a caring person as a child or teenager. When he got into sales he had to pay attention to what the customer wanted. In 2002 he was selling ACT prep and was learning NLP and self-hypnosis to help himself with memory. This gave him an exposure to a sales process. *What do you like most about sales?* A lot of the sales things. Having meaningful work means something. Impacting the lives of his clients means a lot. He likes having options, which being a sales professional gives him. *What sales method do you follow?* Sandler (follows about 70%). Likes the way they teach how to close first. "This is what I do!" Jordan Belfort "The Wolf of Wall Street." Straightline Sales. It's not a client-focused approach. He's one of the best at tonality. They can frame an issue. He's good with objection handling. He teaches a looping technique similar to Tom Hopkins so it doesn't feel like an ambush. *What is the name of your best sales manager ever?* Matt McClellan at Radio Shack. *What made this manager so good?* He was full of praise and kept the sales environment so healthy. *What made your worst manager so bad?* Lack of fun. Totally focused on the numbers and lead with threats. Jeremy loves Barbara Corcoran. Jeremy loves quality time. She sells to her sales people. *How do you prepare for a big meeting?* Don't let that dynamic enter your space. He was in the off-liner space helping old school brick and mortar companies get online. He had seven contacts at one company and it was taxxing. Make a few notes and get clear on the outcomes and goals and what the prospect wants, their communication style, etc. and get on with it. He prays that he is in a giving attitude. Don't sell what they can shop for. The top three things that matter are... ---------------------- *Selling Track Record* ---------------------- *What is the most you ever sold in a year?* $3 million. He was not in high ticket sales for a long time. He did sales training for Guthy-Renker. He often jumped into sales training too soon because of his ego. *What is the biggest order you ever booked?* In South Georgia homes were only about $320,000. *How long did it take to book your biggest order?* Bigger deals usually go easier. They ask hard questions but close quickly. *Why did the customer buy from you?* He does not know. He was not a great mortgage broker due to being burned in college with debt but he believed in it enough to hustle and he knew he offered the best choice in the industry. *What did you learn from the process?* Sell what you believe in. Don't sell to do damage control. He likes helping high performance people achieve more. The key is finding the right problem to solve. But finding the right problem to solve is key. It's more than shining the light on the pain. Help them learn. That can be taught but great attitudes cannot be taught. *What is the biggest order you ever lost?* Lost a big mortgage. *Why was the order lost?* Don't take peopel at their word.
