Do you ever find yourself thinking “river thoughts” like Edward Abbey? A new mural along the River Trail encourages just that. Located just south of Santa Rita Park, local artist Mariah Kaminsky painted a tribute to the late author, incorporating the Desert Solitaire quote, “I chose to listen to the river for a while, thinking river thoughts, before joining the night and stars.” The mural serves as a reminder to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the Southwest. Nearly a decade after the Gold King Mine spill turned the Animas River orange, cleanup efforts continue in Silverton's Superfund sites. The Bonita Peak Mining District, a Superfund site encompassing multiple mines, remains a focus of extensive remediation. Trout Unlimited, in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, supports this effort through a Community Advisory Group (CAG) made up of local experts. The CAG is crucial in guiding the cleanup process and shaping long-term restoration goals, aiming to improve water quality and support a thriving fish population in the Animas River. By Sadie Smith. In 2015, 3 million gallons of polluted mine water burst from the abandoned Gold King Mine near Silverton, Colorado, and turned streams and rivers bright orange as the flow traveled all the way to Lake Powell nearly 400 miles away. That catastrophic event made the news and the mine was designated a Superfund site by the EPA. But in fact, hundreds of legacy mines in the Rocky Mountain west have potential to leak toxic water into the watershed. Rory Cowie is an expert on high-alpine mine water monitoring, and his stories about his work at these hazardous sites are fascinating. In 2015, the Gold King mine spill near Silverton, Colorado sent toxic waste water into the Animas River watershed. Heavy metals flowed from waterways in Colorado through New Mexico, Utah, and the Navajo Nation. The event drew attention to toxic drainage from similar abandoned mines throughout the country. Now folks are hoping 'Good Samaritan' legislation could help more communities clean up mine drainage. Our partners at Rocky Mountain Community Radio have the story. IN THIS EPISODE OF NATIVE OPINION: Hour 1: We discuss North Carolina's "Bathroom Law" introduced in North Carolina, endorsed by that state's Governor, Pat McCrory, as well as the state of Mississippi. The law directs trans gendered people to use bathrooms that match the gender listed on their birth certificates. Later in the hour we look at the complete irresponsibility of the EPA to Native American farmers in not even sending a representative to hearings that discuss the Colorado mine disaster late last year. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy will not attend. This is considered a complete insult to native American Farmers and the respective tribes that they represent who are adversely affected by the toxic sludge that spilled in the Animas River affecting the waterways that those tribes and farmers rely on. Hour 2: We provide a deconstruction of the Democratic debate leading into the April 19th Primary in the State of New York. Native Opinion officially backs Senator Bernie Sanders. Discussion includes why we feel News media outlets should not run these debates, the lies Hillary Clinton consistently commits, and we play several clips from the debate with commentary.
